0:00:16 > 0:00:19who dreams of faraway adventures.

0:00:19 > 0:00:21Let me tell you all about him.

0:00:21 > 0:00:23This story is called The Snail and the Whale

0:00:23 > 0:00:27and it's by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler.

0:00:27 > 0:00:29This is the tale of a tiny snail

0:00:29 > 0:00:32and a great big grey-blue humpback whale.

0:00:32 > 0:00:34This is a rock as black as soot

0:00:34 > 0:00:37and this is a snail with an itchy foot.

0:00:37 > 0:00:40The sea snail slithered all over the rock

0:00:40 > 0:00:42and gazed at the sea and the ships in the dock.

0:00:42 > 0:00:46And as she gazed, she sniffed and sighed.

0:00:46 > 0:00:48"The sea is deep and the world is wide.

0:00:48 > 0:00:51"How I long to sail," said the tiny snail.

0:00:51 > 0:00:53These are the other snails in the flock

0:00:53 > 0:00:56who all stuck tight to the smooth black rock

0:00:56 > 0:00:58and said to the snail with the itchy foot,

0:00:58 > 0:01:01"Be quiet! Don't wriggle! Sit still! Stay put!"

0:01:01 > 0:01:05But the tiny sea snail sighed and sniffed, then cried,

0:01:05 > 0:01:09"I've got it! I'll hitch a lift."

0:01:09 > 0:01:11This is the trail of the tiny snail.

0:01:11 > 0:01:14A silvery trail that looped and curled and said,

0:01:14 > 0:01:17"Lift wanted around the world."

0:01:18 > 0:01:21This is the whale who came one night

0:01:21 > 0:01:24when the tide was high and the stars were bright.

0:01:24 > 0:01:26A humpback whale, immensely long,

0:01:26 > 0:01:29who sang to the snail a wonderful song

0:01:29 > 0:01:31of shimmering ice and coral caves

0:01:31 > 0:01:34and shooting stars and enormous waves.

0:01:34 > 0:01:37And this is the tail of the humpback whale.

0:01:37 > 0:01:40He held it out of the starlit sea and said to the snail,

0:01:40 > 0:01:42"Come sail with me."

0:01:42 > 0:01:45This is the sea, so wild and free

0:01:45 > 0:01:48that carried the whale and the snail on his tail

0:01:48 > 0:01:50to towering icebergs and far-off lands

0:01:50 > 0:01:53with fiery mountains and golden sands.

0:01:53 > 0:01:56These are the waves that arched and crashed,

0:01:56 > 0:01:59that foamed and frolicked and sprayed and splashed

0:01:59 > 0:02:02the tiny snail on the tail of the whale.

0:02:02 > 0:02:04These are the caves beneath the waves

0:02:04 > 0:02:06where stripy fish with feathery fins

0:02:06 > 0:02:09and sharks with hideous toothy grins

0:02:09 > 0:02:12swam around the whale and the snail on his tail.

0:02:12 > 0:02:15This is the sky, so vast and high.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18Sometimes sunny and blue and warm.

0:02:18 > 0:02:21Sometimes filled with a thunderstorm.

0:02:21 > 0:02:24With zigzag lightening, flashing and frightening

0:02:24 > 0:02:26the tiny snail on the tail of the whale.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29And she gazed at the sky, the sea, the land,

0:02:29 > 0:02:32the waves and the caves and the golden sand.

0:02:32 > 0:02:35She gazed and gazed, amazed by it all.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38And she said to the whale, "I feel so small."

0:02:39 > 0:02:42But then came the day the whale lost his way.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44These are the speedboats running a race,

0:02:44 > 0:02:47zigging and zooming all over the place.

0:02:47 > 0:02:50Upsetting the whale with their ear-splitting roar,

0:02:50 > 0:02:52making him swim too close to the shore.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55This is the tide slipping away

0:02:55 > 0:02:58and this is the whale lying beached in the bay.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01"Quick, off the sand, back to sea," cried the snail.

0:03:01 > 0:03:05"I can't move on land. I'm too big," moaned the whale.

0:03:05 > 0:03:08The snail felt helpless and terribly small.

0:03:08 > 0:03:12Then, "I've got it!" she cried. And started to crawl.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15"I must not fail," said the tiny snail.

0:03:15 > 0:03:18This is the bell on the school in the bay

0:03:18 > 0:03:20ringing the children in from their play.

0:03:20 > 0:03:23This is the teacher holding her chalk, telling the class,

0:03:23 > 0:03:25"Sit straight, don't talk."

0:03:25 > 0:03:27This is the board, as black as soot.

0:03:27 > 0:03:30And this is the snail with the itchy foot.

0:03:30 > 0:03:33"A snail! A snail!" the teacher turns pale.

0:03:33 > 0:03:36"Look!" say the children, "It's leaving a trail."

0:03:36 > 0:03:38This is the trail of the tiny snail.

0:03:38 > 0:03:41A silvery trail saying, "Save the whale,"

0:03:41 > 0:03:44These are the children running from school,

0:03:44 > 0:03:46fetching the firemen, digging a pool,

0:03:46 > 0:03:50squirting and spraying to keep the whale cool.

0:03:50 > 0:03:52This is the tide coming into the bay

0:03:52 > 0:03:55and these are the villagers shouting, "Hooray!"

0:03:55 > 0:03:59As the whale and the snail travel safely away.

0:03:59 > 0:04:02Back to the dock and the flock on the rock, who said,

0:04:02 > 0:04:05"How time's flown," and, "Haven't you grown!"

0:04:05 > 0:04:08And the whale and the snail told their wonderful tale

0:04:08 > 0:04:10of shimmering ice and coral caves

0:04:10 > 0:04:13and shooting stars and enormous waves.

0:04:13 > 0:04:15And of how the snail, so small and frail,

0:04:15 > 0:04:19with her looping, curling, silvery trail,

0:04:19 > 0:04:21saved the life of that humpback whale.

0:04:22 > 0:04:25And the humpback whale held out his tail

0:04:25 > 0:04:28and on crawled snail after snail after snail

0:04:28 > 0:04:31and they sang to the sea as they all set sail

0:04:31 > 0:04:34on the tail of the grey-blue humpback whale.

0:04:36 > 0:04:39That story was called The Snail and the Whale.
