0:00:20 > 0:00:24They'll need plenty of water and lots of sunlight

0:00:24 > 0:00:26so they can grow really big.

0:00:26 > 0:00:30I've got a story to tell you about a very big vegetable.

0:00:54 > 0:00:59The old man and the old woman kept six yellow canaries,

0:00:59 > 0:01:04five white geese, four speckled hens,

0:01:05 > 0:01:10two pot-bellied pigs and one big, brown cow.

0:01:12 > 0:01:17On a fine, March morning, the old woman sat up in bed,

0:01:17 > 0:01:19sniffed the sweet spring air

0:01:19 > 0:01:24and said, "It's time for us to sow the vegetables."

0:01:24 > 0:01:29So, the old man and the old woman went out into the garden.

0:01:29 > 0:01:33They sowed peas and carrots and potatoes and beans.

0:01:33 > 0:01:36Last of all, they sowed turnips.

0:01:36 > 0:01:39That night, rain fell.

0:01:39 > 0:01:44Pitter-patter on the garden of the crooked old cottage.

0:01:44 > 0:01:48The old man and the old woman smiled as they slept.

0:01:49 > 0:01:54The rain would help the seeds swell and produce fine, juicy vegetables.

0:01:56 > 0:02:01Spring passed and the summer sun ripened the vegetables.

0:02:01 > 0:02:05The old man and the old woman harvested their carrots

0:02:05 > 0:02:10and potatoes and peas and beans and turnips.

0:02:10 > 0:02:13At the end of the row, there was just one turnip left.

0:02:14 > 0:02:20It looked very big. In fact, it looked gigantic.

0:02:22 > 0:02:27On a fine September morning, the old man sat up in bed,

0:02:27 > 0:02:29sniffed the cool late-summer air

0:02:29 > 0:02:36and said, "It's time for us to pull up that turnip." And out he went.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39The old man pulled and heaved and tugged and yanked,

0:02:39 > 0:02:42but the turnip would not move.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44The old man went to find the old woman.

0:02:44 > 0:02:48The old woman wrapped her arms around the old man's waist,

0:02:48 > 0:02:52both of them pulled and heaved and tugged and yanked.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55But still the turnip would not move.

0:02:55 > 0:03:02So, the old woman went to fetch the big, brown cow. Moo!

0:03:43 > 0:03:47and the three black cats pulled and heaved and tugged and yanked.

0:03:50 > 0:03:53So, one of the cats twitched her tail

0:03:53 > 0:03:56and went to fetch the four speckled hens.

0:04:40 > 0:04:43So one of the geese craned her neck

0:04:43 > 0:04:47and went to fetch the six yellow canaries.

0:04:47 > 0:04:51CHEEP CHEEP! CHEEP CHEEP CHEEP!

0:04:51 > 0:04:55The old man, the old woman, the big brown cow, the two pot-bellied pigs,

0:05:10 > 0:05:13The animals and birds lay on the ground gasping.

0:05:16 > 0:05:19The old woman had an idea.

0:05:19 > 0:05:21The old woman went into the kitchen,

0:05:21 > 0:05:24and put a piece of cheese by the mouse hole.

0:05:26 > 0:05:31Soon, a hungry little mouse popped its head out of the hole.

0:05:31 > 0:05:33SQUEAK SQUEAK, SQUEAK SQUEAK!

0:05:33 > 0:05:36The old woman caught the mouse and carried it outside.

0:05:38 > 0:05:43The old man, the old woman, the big brown cow, the two pot-bellied pigs,

0:05:43 > 0:05:46the three black cats, the four speckled hens,

0:05:46 > 0:05:49the five white geese, the six yellow canaries

0:05:49 > 0:05:55and the hungry little mouse pulled and heaved and tugged and yanked...

0:05:55 > 0:05:56Pop!

0:05:56 > 0:05:59The gigantic turnip came flying out of the ground,

0:05:59 > 0:06:01and everyone fell over!

0:06:01 > 0:06:05The canaries fell on the mouse, the geese fell on the canaries,

0:06:05 > 0:06:07the hens fell on the geese, the cats fell on the hens,

0:06:07 > 0:06:10the pigs fell on the cats, the cow fell on the pigs,

0:06:10 > 0:06:14the old woman fell on the cow and the old man fell on the old woman!

0:06:14 > 0:06:16All of them lay on the ground and laughed.

0:06:16 > 0:06:19HE LAUGHS

0:06:19 > 0:06:20That night, the old man

0:06:20 > 0:06:24and the old woman made a huge bowl of turnip stew.

0:06:25 > 0:06:29Everyone ate as much as they could, and do you know what?

0:06:29 > 0:06:33The hungry little mouse ate the most of all.
