0:26:07 > 0:26:11Hello. I'm Peter. Have you had a good day today?
0:26:11 > 0:26:14Fantastic. I hope that you're smiling.
0:26:14 > 0:26:18I'm smiling because I'm wearing my fruit hat.
0:26:18 > 0:26:22Am I allowed to wear the fruit hat whilst I tell the bedtime story?
0:26:23 > 0:26:24Ohhh.
0:26:26 > 0:26:28I love my fruit hat.
0:26:28 > 0:26:32Tonight's bedtime story is about one very, very happy person
0:26:32 > 0:26:36and her three neighbours who want to be happy too.
0:26:36 > 0:26:39It's called Happiness is a Watermelon on Your Head
0:26:39 > 0:26:44and it's by Stella Dries and Daniel Hahn.
0:26:44 > 0:26:46I hope you're sitting comfortably.
0:26:46 > 0:26:50At the end of the village, behind a green door
0:26:50 > 0:26:54lived happy Miss Jolly with Melvin, her boar.
0:26:54 > 0:26:58Each morning, she'd sit in her tree, playing a song on her cello,
0:26:58 > 0:27:02whilst Melvin sang sweetly along.
0:27:02 > 0:27:04"What makes her so happy?
0:27:04 > 0:27:08"We really must learn," cried her neighbours,
0:27:08 > 0:27:10Miss Whimper, Miss Grouch and Miss Stern.
0:27:10 > 0:27:13"It's awful being miserable, day after day.
0:27:13 > 0:27:18"Let's find out her secret. There must be a way."
0:27:18 > 0:27:21The very next day, what a sight met their eye.
0:27:21 > 0:27:24It's happy Miss Jolly, just frolicking by,
0:27:24 > 0:27:28with a smile on her face and, "Good morning," she said,
0:27:28 > 0:27:33with a skip in her step and a fruit on her head.
0:27:33 > 0:27:36"That's it," cried Miss Stern,
0:27:36 > 0:27:39"That's the trick. It's so clever.
0:27:39 > 0:27:43"We need hats made of food. We'll be happy forever."
0:27:43 > 0:27:47So they ran to her kitchen and rummaged about
0:27:47 > 0:27:50for a nice bunch of radishes, cauliflower, trout.
0:27:50 > 0:27:53Then they strapped them all on,
0:27:53 > 0:27:55tied them fast, pinned them down
0:27:55 > 0:27:59and stepped out delighted to dazzle the town.
0:27:59 > 0:28:03Such beautiful hats, what a sight, what a show.
0:28:03 > 0:28:05Did those hats make them happy now?
0:28:05 > 0:28:07No.
0:28:07 > 0:28:11So, they tried clocks, they tried pots,
0:28:11 > 0:28:13they tried forks, they tried twigs,
0:28:13 > 0:28:16fantastical whatsits and thingamajigs.
0:28:16 > 0:28:20Their hats were ingenious, remarkable, mad.
0:28:20 > 0:28:22But how were the women?
0:28:22 > 0:28:24Still dreadfully sad.
0:28:24 > 0:28:29Nothing worked. "Try the cello," said one. "Climb the tree.
0:28:29 > 0:28:33"Maybe that's why Miss Jolly's more happy than me."
0:28:33 > 0:28:35"That's it," cried her friends
0:28:35 > 0:28:39and began their assent, higher and higher and higher they went.
0:28:39 > 0:28:43But like four large, ripe fruits, so heavy and round,
0:28:43 > 0:28:47they all, with the cello, thumped back to the ground.
0:28:49 > 0:28:53"But wait!" cried Miss Grouch, "I've the best idea yet.
0:28:53 > 0:28:57"Maybe being happy is having a pet."
0:28:57 > 0:29:01Miss Jolly has Melvin, you know, what a bore.
0:29:01 > 0:29:06"We will have birds," said Miss Whimper, "and monkeys galore."
0:29:06 > 0:29:11"Something green," said Miss Stern. "Something long, something small."
0:29:11 > 0:29:12And they did.
0:29:12 > 0:29:14And what happened then?
0:29:14 > 0:29:17Nothing at all.
0:29:17 > 0:29:20So, that's it. They gave up. What else could they do?
0:29:20 > 0:29:24They were sadder than ever. Their pets were sad too.
0:29:24 > 0:29:28As they dragged themselves homeward in gloom and despair,
0:29:28 > 0:29:32a giant green something came flying through the air.
0:29:32 > 0:29:35It brushed past the tip of a rocking-horse hat,
0:29:35 > 0:29:40as it whizzed through the air and came down with a splat.
0:29:40 > 0:29:42A watermelon.
0:29:42 > 0:29:47"Attack!" cried Miss J and she showered them with fruit
0:29:47 > 0:29:51as she raced through the town with her boar in pursuit.
0:29:51 > 0:29:55Soon the battle had spread to stupendous excess
0:29:55 > 0:29:58and the whole of the town was a pink, sticky mess.
0:30:00 > 0:30:03When the chaos was done, as they lay on the ground,
0:30:03 > 0:30:07Miss Whimper, Miss Stern the Miss Grouch looked around.
0:30:07 > 0:30:11They were covered with pips and with pulp and with goo.
0:30:11 > 0:30:15One had juice in her hat. One had seeds in her shoe.
0:30:15 > 0:30:19They lay there defeated, exhausted and sore,
0:30:19 > 0:30:23those three sorry women and Melvin, the boar.
0:30:23 > 0:30:27Then one of the women... But wait, what's this?
0:30:27 > 0:30:30Could that be the trace of the smirk or a grin
0:30:30 > 0:30:32or a smile on her face?
0:30:32 > 0:30:35Yes!
0:30:35 > 0:30:39All sticky and slimy and pink, what a sight.
0:30:39 > 0:30:42They giggled and hooted and danced with delight.
0:30:42 > 0:30:46"We did it! We did it!" Their sadness had passed.
0:30:46 > 0:30:51They laughed and they laughed and were happy at last.
0:30:53 > 0:30:57And that story was called Happiness is a Watermelon on Your Head.
0:30:57 > 0:31:01Now it's time for you to give your favourite teddy a big cuddle
0:31:01 > 0:31:04and get snuggled up in bed for a good sleep.
0:31:04 > 0:31:07Can I put my fruit hat on again?
0:31:07 > 0:31:09Oh, thank you.
0:31:12 > 0:31:17See you soon for another bedtime story. Good night.
0:31:17 > 0:31:21Um, can I wear this hat to bed, please?
0:31:21 > 0:31:22Ohhh.
