0:21:50 > 0:21:57.
0:22:04 > 0:22:08So what do you think? Is pink my colour
0:22:08 > 0:22:12or do you think I should go for something less dazzling?
0:22:12 > 0:22:18Oh, hello. I didn't see you there. Erm, yes.
0:22:18 > 0:22:22I didn't mean for anyone to see me wearing these things because, em,
0:22:22 > 0:22:27they're pink. I don't think it's my colour. Do you?
0:22:27 > 0:22:31It's a bit bright and I might stand out a little bit when I go out.
0:22:33 > 0:22:37Patrick the penguin has that problem in tonight's bedtime story.
0:22:37 > 0:22:40It's by Lynne Rickards and Margaret Chamberlain
0:22:40 > 0:22:42and it's called Pink.
0:22:42 > 0:22:49One sunny morning, Patrick woke up to find he had turned bright pink.
0:22:49 > 0:22:52His beak was pink, his flippers were pink.
0:22:52 > 0:22:55He was pink from head to foot.
0:22:55 > 0:22:57"This is terrible," cried Patrick.
0:22:57 > 0:23:00"What will all of my friends say?
0:23:00 > 0:23:02"Whoever heard of a pink penguin?"
0:23:02 > 0:23:08"Don't worry, dear," soothed his mum. "Dr Black will soon sort you out."
0:23:08 > 0:23:13Dr Black was puzzled. She looked in her big medical book.
0:23:13 > 0:23:18"A very cold penguin can turn blue," she said.
0:23:18 > 0:23:22"If you're feeling queasy, you can go a bit green
0:23:22 > 0:23:24"but pink is very unusual."
0:23:24 > 0:23:27And Dr Black closed her big book.
0:23:27 > 0:23:31"Perhaps you'll get used to being pink," she said to Patrick.
0:23:31 > 0:23:34"But I'm a boy!" he shouted,
0:23:34 > 0:23:37"And boys can't be pink."
0:23:37 > 0:23:41When they got home, Patrick's dad opened another big book.
0:23:41 > 0:23:45It was called Birds Of The World.
0:23:45 > 0:23:48"Look," he said to Patrick. "Flamingos are pink,"
0:23:48 > 0:23:50"just like you!"
0:23:50 > 0:23:54Patrick looked. He saw hundreds of beautiful birds.
0:23:54 > 0:23:59"Are some of them boys?" asked Patrick, as he gazed at the picture.
0:23:59 > 0:24:02"At least half of them," laughed his dad.
0:24:02 > 0:24:06"You see, boys can be pink."
0:24:06 > 0:24:10Patrick got teased at school for being pink.
0:24:10 > 0:24:14"Don't worry - they'll get used to it soon," said his mum.
0:24:14 > 0:24:19Patrick wasn't sure. He didn't like being different from everyone else.
0:24:19 > 0:24:24One Saturday morning, Patrick pulled out his rucksack.
0:24:24 > 0:24:28He put in his pyjamas and his favourite soft toy.
0:24:28 > 0:24:33"I don't fit in here anymore," he told his mum and dad.
0:24:33 > 0:24:36"I'm going to Africa to see those flamingos."
0:24:36 > 0:24:40Patrick went to the water's edge.
0:24:40 > 0:24:44Africa was a long way north but he was a strong swimmer.
0:24:44 > 0:24:49He swam for seven days and seven nights.
0:24:49 > 0:24:54When the water began to feel warmer, he knew he was nearly there.
0:24:54 > 0:24:58On the eighth day, Patrick arrived in a wide bay.
0:24:58 > 0:25:03On the shore, he saw hundreds of flamingos just like in the picture.
0:25:03 > 0:25:07He waddled up to them and held out a pink flipper.
0:25:07 > 0:25:10"How do you do," he said, politely.
0:25:10 > 0:25:13The flamingos looked down at him, curiously.
0:25:13 > 0:25:19They had long necks and spindly legs and were very, very tall.
0:25:19 > 0:25:24"Will you join us for lunch?", one of them asked Patrick.
0:25:24 > 0:25:27"Oh, yes. Thank you," he cried.
0:25:27 > 0:25:31All the flamingos dipped their long curvy beaks into the water
0:25:31 > 0:25:34and began skimming them back and forth.
0:25:34 > 0:25:37Patrick's beak was quite the wrong shape
0:25:37 > 0:25:40so he came up coughing and spluttering.
0:25:40 > 0:25:43Poor Patrick would have to go hungry.
0:25:43 > 0:25:45After lunch, the flamingos had a nap.
0:25:45 > 0:25:50They all stood on one leg and tucked their heads down.
0:25:50 > 0:25:53Patrick tried to stand on one leg too.
0:25:53 > 0:25:54He was hopeless.
0:25:54 > 0:25:59When sunset came, it was time to fly to the nesting ground.
0:25:59 > 0:26:02The flamingos flapped their wings
0:26:02 > 0:26:05and rose into the air like a big pink cloud.
0:26:05 > 0:26:11One small pink penguin was left behind.
0:26:11 > 0:26:13"This is no good," said Patrick.
0:26:13 > 0:26:17He didn't belong here, even though he was pink.
0:26:17 > 0:26:20It was time to go home.
0:26:20 > 0:26:22The next morning, Patrick set off.
0:26:22 > 0:26:25He swam for seven days and seven nights
0:26:25 > 0:26:28until the water felt lovely and cold again.
0:26:28 > 0:26:32Patrick's mum and dad were very pleased to see him.
0:26:32 > 0:26:36"You must have missed your favourite breakfast," said Dad.
0:26:36 > 0:26:40"I sure did," said Patrick, with his mouth full.
0:26:40 > 0:26:45When Patrick went back to school, his whole class crowded around him.
0:26:45 > 0:26:50"Where've you been, Patrick?" they asked, "We missed you."
0:26:50 > 0:26:54Patrick's teacher asked him to give a little talk about his travels.
0:26:54 > 0:26:58He stood in front of the class with a big map and a pointer.
0:26:58 > 0:27:03"I went to Africa," Patrick told his friends.
0:27:03 > 0:27:07"Wow, you swam all that way?", asked Billy.
0:27:07 > 0:27:09Patrick nodded proudly.
0:27:09 > 0:27:13"In Africa, the water is warm," he continued.
0:27:13 > 0:27:19"There are colourful fish and tall pink birds called flamingos,
0:27:19 > 0:27:22"that stand on one leg."
0:27:22 > 0:27:25"Did you see one of those?", asked Lulu.
0:27:25 > 0:27:28"I saw hundreds," answered Patrick.
0:27:28 > 0:27:32"They were beautiful. But they can't swim underwater
0:27:32 > 0:27:35"or slide on their tummies like we can."
0:27:35 > 0:27:38"Really?", said his classmates.
0:27:38 > 0:27:39"What a shame!"
0:27:39 > 0:27:44After school, Patrick waddled home with his best friend, Arthur.
0:27:44 > 0:27:50"You know, Arthur," said Patrick, "I'm really glad I went to Africa."
0:27:50 > 0:27:53"I'm really glad you came back," said Arthur.
0:27:53 > 0:27:56"Me too!", laughed Patrick.
0:27:56 > 0:28:00"Penguins belong at the South Pole. Even pink penguins."
0:28:00 > 0:28:05"Especially pink penguins!", said Arthur, happily.
0:28:05 > 0:28:09That night, at bedtime, Patrick said,
0:28:09 > 0:28:13"You were right, Mum. Nobody teases me anymore."
0:28:13 > 0:28:16He snuggled down and smiled.
0:28:16 > 0:28:20Being different wasn't so bad after all.
0:28:20 > 0:28:23And that story was called Pink.
0:28:23 > 0:28:27Maybe I should give these pink bits and pieces another go.
0:28:27 > 0:28:31Oh, and while I do, it's time for you to go to bed.
0:28:31 > 0:28:34I'll see you soon for another story.
0:28:34 > 0:28:38So how does it look. Come on, be honest with me.
