0:00:07 > 0:00:09Hello, I'm Charlie.

0:00:09 > 0:00:13It's almost time for you to get tucked up in bed.

0:00:13 > 0:00:17It's time for the girl in tonight's story to go to bed as well.

0:00:17 > 0:00:20But something keeps on bothering her.

0:00:20 > 0:00:22Shall we find out what it is?

0:00:22 > 0:00:25The story is called Emily Brown And The Thing,

0:00:25 > 0:00:29and it's by Cressida Cowell and Neal Layton.

0:00:30 > 0:00:34Once upon a time, there was a little girl called Emily Brown

0:00:34 > 0:00:37and an old, grey rabbit called Stanley.

0:00:37 > 0:00:42Emily Brown and Stanley were trying to get to sleep after a busy day.

0:00:42 > 0:00:45But a noise was keeping them awake.

0:00:45 > 0:00:48Splish!, went the noise.

0:00:48 > 0:00:50Splosh!, went the noise.

0:00:50 > 0:00:54It seemed to be coming from the window.

0:00:54 > 0:00:57There was a Thing sitting on the windowsill.

0:00:57 > 0:01:01Large tears were dripping onto his pyjamas.

0:01:01 > 0:01:04"Oh, Emily Brown. Emily Brown!" wept the Thing.

0:01:04 > 0:01:08"I can't find my cuddly however hard I look.

0:01:08 > 0:01:12"It's not in the dark and scary wood and it's not under my pillow.

0:01:12 > 0:01:15"You and Stanley must come and find it for me

0:01:15 > 0:01:18"because I just can't sleep without my cuddly."

0:01:18 > 0:01:23So Emily Brown and Stanley put on their wet weather wind coats,

0:01:23 > 0:01:27their see-in-the-dark glasses and their special boots for climbing.

0:01:27 > 0:01:30They searched down low in the tangles

0:01:30 > 0:01:33and they searched up high in the tree tops.

0:01:33 > 0:01:35They ran away from wolves. Grr!

0:01:35 > 0:01:37And they lifted up trolls

0:01:37 > 0:01:41And, eventually, they found the Thing's cuddly right at the top

0:01:41 > 0:01:45of the twistiest, thorniest tree in the dark and scary wood.

0:01:45 > 0:01:47"Thank you," said the Thing.

0:01:47 > 0:01:50"Don't mention it," said Emily Brown.

0:01:50 > 0:01:56"And now you must be quiet. Stanley and I are trying to sleep."

0:01:56 > 0:02:00"I promise," said the Thing, cuddling his cuddly.

0:02:00 > 0:02:03Emily Brown shut the window.

0:02:04 > 0:02:05A short while later,

0:02:05 > 0:02:10Emily Brown and Stanley were trying to get to sleep again.

0:02:10 > 0:02:13But a noise was keeping them awake.

0:02:13 > 0:02:16Rumble. Rumble. Rumble, went the noise.

0:02:16 > 0:02:19Rumble. Rumble. Rumble.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22It seemed to be coming from the kitchen.

0:02:22 > 0:02:24It was the Thing again!

0:02:24 > 0:02:28"Oh, Emily Brown. Emily Brown!" grumbled the thing.

0:02:28 > 0:02:30"All I had for tea was 100 hamburgers

0:02:30 > 0:02:33"and one small apple for the vitamins

0:02:33 > 0:02:36"and now I'm ever so hungry and thirsty.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39"You and Stanley must fetch me my bedtime milk

0:02:39 > 0:02:44"because I just can't sleep when my tummy is rumbling."

0:02:44 > 0:02:47So Emily Brown and Stanley sighed heavily

0:02:47 > 0:02:50and put snow snugglers on their heads and ski plankers

0:02:50 > 0:02:55on their feet and their fluffiest winter warmers over everything.

0:02:55 > 0:02:58They skied off through the wild and whirling wastes,

0:02:58 > 0:03:01through blizzards and hurricanes

0:03:01 > 0:03:04till their hands were frozen and their legs were sore

0:03:04 > 0:03:08searching for a mug of milk for the Thing's bedtime snack.

0:03:08 > 0:03:10Stanley had to distract a polar bear

0:03:10 > 0:03:14who thought the milk belonged to him! Grr!

0:03:14 > 0:03:16"Thank you," said the Thing.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19"Don't mention it," said Emily Brown.

0:03:19 > 0:03:24"And now you must be quiet. Stanley and I are trying to sleep."

0:03:24 > 0:03:27"I promise," said the Thing, dropping most of his milk

0:03:27 > 0:03:30over his pyjama top.

0:03:30 > 0:03:33Emily Brown shut the refrigerator door.

0:03:33 > 0:03:37Five minutes later, Emily Brown and Stanley were still trying

0:03:37 > 0:03:41to get to sleep, but a noise was keeping them awake.

0:03:41 > 0:03:45Cough, cough, cough, cough, cough, went the noise.

0:03:45 > 0:03:47Cough, cough, cough, cough, cough!

0:03:47 > 0:03:51It seemed to be coming from the cellar door under the stairs.

0:03:51 > 0:03:54I hope it's not that Thing again.

0:03:54 > 0:03:57Cough, cough, cough, cough, cough!

0:03:57 > 0:03:58It was the Thing.

0:03:58 > 0:04:01Cough, cough, cough, cough, cough!

0:04:01 > 0:04:05"Oh, Emily Brown. Emily Brown!" coughed the thing.

0:04:05 > 0:04:10"I'm feeling very poorly. I need my special green medicine.

0:04:10 > 0:04:14"You and Stanley must fetch it for me from the whiny witches' cavern

0:04:14 > 0:04:17"under these stairs because I just can't sleep

0:04:17 > 0:04:20when my throat is tickling.

0:04:20 > 0:04:23So Emily Brown and Stanley gritted their teeth

0:04:23 > 0:04:27and pulled out their see-in-the-dark glasses again,

0:04:27 > 0:04:31their special tangly ropes and bottles for carrying medicine in.

0:04:31 > 0:04:36They crept through the twisty, turny witches' caverns under the stairs

0:04:36 > 0:04:40and they put their hands on cobwebs and they bumped into bats.

0:04:40 > 0:04:44They had to tell the whiny witches lots and lots of stories

0:04:44 > 0:04:47- in return for the medicine. - WITCHES CACKLE

0:04:47 > 0:04:48SLURPING

0:04:48 > 0:04:51"Thank you," said the Thing.

0:04:51 > 0:04:54"Don't mention it," said Emily Brown.

0:04:54 > 0:04:58"And now you really, really do have to be quiet.

0:04:58 > 0:05:01"Stanley and I are trying to sleep."

0:05:03 > 0:05:08Emily Brown had hardly even shut her eyes before the noise started again.

0:05:10 > 0:05:13Scratch, scratch, scratch, went the noise.

0:05:13 > 0:05:17It seemed to be coming from under the bed.

0:05:17 > 0:05:19It was that Thing again.

0:05:19 > 0:05:23"I've got this very itchy leg," began the Thing.

0:05:23 > 0:05:26But, this time, Emily Brown had had enough.

0:05:26 > 0:05:29Scratch, scratch, scratch.

0:05:29 > 0:05:31"Stop!" shouted Emily Brown.

0:05:31 > 0:05:34"I've had enough!"

0:05:34 > 0:05:37"We rescued your cuddly from the dark and scary word.

0:05:37 > 0:05:41"We fetched you milk from the wild, whirling wastes.

0:05:41 > 0:05:44"We borrowed medicine from the weird and whiny witches.

0:05:44 > 0:05:47"Stanley and I are exhausted!

0:05:47 > 0:05:51"There's nothing wrong with your leg. What's really the matter?"

0:05:53 > 0:05:56Two large tears crept down the Thing's cheeks

0:05:56 > 0:05:59and onto his furry chest.

0:05:59 > 0:06:04"I'm scared," whispered the Thing.

0:06:04 > 0:06:08"Oh, so that's been the problem," said Emily Brown,

0:06:08 > 0:06:11drying his tears and handing him his cuddly again.

0:06:11 > 0:06:13"What are you scared of?"

0:06:13 > 0:06:16"Oh, I don't know..."

0:06:17 > 0:06:19"..Things," said the thing.

0:06:21 > 0:06:24"But you are a Thing," said Emily Brown.

0:06:25 > 0:06:28"Am I?" said the thing in surprise.

0:06:28 > 0:06:30"I wondered what I was."

0:06:30 > 0:06:33"You're definitely a thing," said Emily Brown,

0:06:33 > 0:06:35tucking him in tightly

0:06:35 > 0:06:39and putting his hot water bottle underneath his hairy legs.

0:06:39 > 0:06:41"Am I scary?" asked the Thing.

0:06:41 > 0:06:44"You're not at all scary," said Emily Brown.

0:06:44 > 0:06:48"You're a very nice Thing and when Stanley and I are trying to

0:06:48 > 0:06:53"get to sleep, we always find it helps to think of nice things.

0:06:53 > 0:06:55"Maybe you should try doing that yourself."

0:06:55 > 0:07:00"Maybe I will," said the nice Thing, yawning very wide.

0:07:01 > 0:07:07"Night, night, Emily Brown. Sleep tight. Sweet dreams."

0:07:10 > 0:07:13That story was called Emily Brown And The Thing.

0:07:13 > 0:07:18Emily and Stanley were bothered again and again by that poor Thing.

0:07:18 > 0:07:20I'm glad they could help him feel better

0:07:20 > 0:07:23and they all got to bed in the end.

0:07:23 > 0:07:28Now it's time for you to get into your bed and think of lovely things.

0:07:28 > 0:07:30I hope you have happy dreams.

0:07:30 > 0:07:33I'll see you again soon for another bedtime story.

0:07:33 > 0:07:35Sleep tight.
