0:00:22 > 0:00:24Sam is training hard.

0:00:24 > 0:00:30He's eaten all his breakfast and now he's doing his exercises.

0:00:30 > 0:00:32Tracey...

0:00:32 > 0:00:33YAWNING

0:00:33 > 0:00:35..is still in bed.

0:00:35 > 0:00:39She says she's saving her energy for later.

0:00:39 > 0:00:43"Good luck", says Dad as he goes off to work.

0:00:43 > 0:00:46Mum is listening for the weather forecast.

0:00:46 > 0:00:48TUNING RADIO

0:00:48 > 0:00:52'And later on, showers spreading to all parts.'

0:00:52 > 0:00:54It's a lovely afternoon.

0:00:54 > 0:00:57Looks like the weatherman was wrong.

0:00:57 > 0:01:01Lots of mum and dads have come to watch.

0:01:01 > 0:01:06"Welcome to our sports day, everybody", says Mrs Jefferson.

0:01:06 > 0:01:10But the loud-hailer isn't working properly and nobody can hear.

0:01:10 > 0:01:13She gives it a shake and tries again.

0:01:13 > 0:01:14Still it won't work.

0:01:14 > 0:01:17Mr Bryant, the caretaker, comes to help.

0:01:17 > 0:01:20He switches it on.

0:01:20 > 0:01:22The first race is for the infants.

0:01:22 > 0:01:25It's a beanbag race.

0:01:25 > 0:01:29"Stand back behind the line", says Miss Foster.

0:01:29 > 0:01:32Ready, steady...go!

0:01:32 > 0:01:36They're off! Jeffery's beanbag has fallen off his head.

0:01:36 > 0:01:39Jenny's is slipping off too.

0:01:39 > 0:01:44Mathew's won't come off, he's holding it on.

0:01:44 > 0:01:48The next race is the wheelbarrow race.

0:01:48 > 0:01:52"Now, pushers, don't push too hard", says Miss Foster.

0:01:52 > 0:01:55"We don't want any broken wheels".

0:01:55 > 0:01:58David and Jamie are making a lot of noise.

0:01:58 > 0:02:02"We're being a space buggy, Miss", says Jamie.

0:02:02 > 0:02:05"Spacemen need to be extra careful", says Miss Foster.

0:02:05 > 0:02:07WHISTLE BLOWS

0:02:07 > 0:02:11Away they go, everybody shouts and cheers. It's going to be close.

0:02:11 > 0:02:16At the finish, the space buggy is just beaten by a wheelbarrow.

0:02:16 > 0:02:20Karen has to use special walking sticks to help her get about.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23She's going to run in the 50 metres dash.

0:02:23 > 0:02:26Miss Foster says that Karen can start

0:02:26 > 0:02:28a little in front, if she likes.

0:02:28 > 0:02:31But Karen doesn't want to. They're off and running.

0:02:31 > 0:02:34Look at Karen go! She's going to come third.

0:02:34 > 0:02:35Go on, Karen!

0:02:35 > 0:02:39There's a great big cheer as she crosses the line.

0:02:39 > 0:02:44After the race, everyone wants a go with Karen's walking sticks.

0:02:44 > 0:02:48Sam and his friend Richard are revving up at the start line

0:02:48 > 0:02:51like two racing cars. Broom! Broom!

0:02:51 > 0:02:54They're in the egg-and-spoon race.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56Miss Foster says... "Go!"

0:02:56 > 0:02:59And they're off.

0:02:59 > 0:03:03The girls are going very carefully, especially Tanya.

0:03:03 > 0:03:08She isn't going to be first but she isn't going to drop her egg.

0:03:08 > 0:03:11Sam is doing well, very well.

0:03:11 > 0:03:14- He's going to win! - SPLAT

0:03:14 > 0:03:16Oh, no!

0:03:16 > 0:03:19Richard has dropped his egg and it's broken.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22It's run all over his shoe.

0:03:22 > 0:03:25One of the teachers wipes it off.

0:03:25 > 0:03:30"Your mum was supposed to give you a hard-boiled egg", she says.

0:03:30 > 0:03:34Oh, dear. Where have those clouds come from?

0:03:34 > 0:03:37Looks like the weatherman was right, after all.

0:03:37 > 0:03:40Let's hope it's just a passing shower.

0:03:40 > 0:03:44On go the coats, up go the umbrellas.

0:03:44 > 0:03:49Tracey's mum didn't bring an umbrella but she did bring a flask.

0:03:49 > 0:03:52"Would you like some, Miss Foster?"

0:03:52 > 0:03:54"Thank you".

0:03:54 > 0:03:56It's brightening up a bit now.

0:03:57 > 0:04:00Good, the rain has stopped.

0:04:00 > 0:04:05The sun comes out and the umbrellas start to steam.

0:04:05 > 0:04:08Tracey is in the next race.

0:04:08 > 0:04:10It's the obstacle race.

0:04:10 > 0:04:14"Run backwards to the hoops", says Miss Foster.

0:04:14 > 0:04:18"Then through the hoops, under the sheet, into the sacks

0:04:18 > 0:04:20"and hop to the finish."

0:04:20 > 0:04:22"Are you ready? Go!"

0:04:22 > 0:04:25Tracey's off to a good start.

0:04:25 > 0:04:27Oh, dear!

0:04:27 > 0:04:29Joanne's got the hoops stuck.

0:04:29 > 0:04:32Tracey's the first one under the sheet.

0:04:32 > 0:04:35Mathew's found a hole in it.

0:04:35 > 0:04:37Now what's happening?

0:04:37 > 0:04:41There's a lot of wriggling and giggling under the sheet

0:04:41 > 0:04:43but no-one's coming out.

0:04:43 > 0:04:46"I think we'd better help them out", says Miss Foster.

0:04:46 > 0:04:50No-one wins but it was good fun.

0:04:50 > 0:04:55The last race of the afternoon is the dads' race.

0:04:55 > 0:04:58"My dad's a brilliant runner", says Henry.

0:04:58 > 0:05:00"So is mine", says Paul.

0:05:00 > 0:05:04The dad's are all laughing as they wait for the start.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07Go! They're off.

0:05:07 > 0:05:11Oops, Henry's dad has lost a sandal.

0:05:11 > 0:05:12Nicola's dad wins,

0:05:12 > 0:05:15Henry's dad is last.

0:05:15 > 0:05:18"Don't cry, Henry", says Miss Foster.

0:05:18 > 0:05:23But Henry says he's just got something in his eye.

0:05:23 > 0:05:26And now it's time to go home.

0:05:26 > 0:05:29"Well done, everybody", says Mrs Jefferson,

0:05:29 > 0:05:31as she thanks every-one for coming.

0:05:31 > 0:05:33But no-one can hear.

0:05:33 > 0:05:36Mr Bryant has put the loud-hailer away.

0:05:36 > 0:05:39"Did you see me win, Mum?", says Sam.

0:05:39 > 0:05:42"I certainly did", says Mum.

0:05:42 > 0:05:45"Look, there's Dad", shouts Tracey.

0:05:45 > 0:05:49"Come on, Sam, I'll race you to the gate."

0:05:50 > 0:05:53That story was called The Sports Day.

0:05:53 > 0:05:55What a lot of races!

0:05:55 > 0:05:59I think the obstacle race was my favourite.
