0:15:25 > 0:15:29This story is called Captain Wag And The Polar Bears

0:15:29 > 0:15:31and it's by Michael Terry.

0:15:33 > 0:15:37Captain Wag and his crew, One-Eyed Jack and Old Scratch,

0:15:37 > 0:15:40were working on their new ship, The Saucy Paw,

0:15:40 > 0:15:44when Old Scratch saw something floating in the water.

0:15:44 > 0:15:47"Look, Captain, there be a bottle

0:15:47 > 0:15:51"and it looks like it's got a note inside," shouted Old Scratch.

0:15:51 > 0:15:56"Fish it out, shipmate, let's see what it says," ordered Captain Wag.

0:15:56 > 0:16:00Old Scratch pulled the bottle out of the water, took out the note

0:16:00 > 0:16:04and handed it to Captain Wag. "Shiver me timbers, lads!

0:16:04 > 0:16:07"It's from that dastardly cove pirate, Ginger Tom,"

0:16:07 > 0:16:08cried Captain Wag.

0:16:08 > 0:16:11He read it out loud to his shipmates.

0:16:11 > 0:16:14"To whom may be reading this letter....

0:16:21 > 0:16:25"And, oh, help! We're surrounded by hungry-looking polar bears.

0:16:25 > 0:16:28"Yours terrified, Pirate Ginger Tom.

0:16:28 > 0:16:30"PS, help!"

0:16:30 > 0:16:34"Stow everything we need on board and make sure there's plenty of food

0:16:34 > 0:16:37"and warm clothes," said Captain Wag.

0:16:37 > 0:16:41"That varmint Pirate Ginger Tom and his motley crew are in trouble

0:16:41 > 0:16:44"and we're the only ones who can rescue them."

0:16:44 > 0:16:48As they sailed north, the weather got colder and colder

0:16:48 > 0:16:51and then it started to snow so hard it became a blizzard.

0:16:53 > 0:16:56The snow started to settle and cover the ship

0:16:56 > 0:16:59but as they desperately scraped the snow,

0:16:59 > 0:17:02throwing it overboard, the blizzard died away

0:17:02 > 0:17:03and the sky cleared.

0:17:03 > 0:17:07Now they could see that they were surrounded by a sea of ice.

0:17:07 > 0:17:10Not a sound was to be heard in the freezing air,

0:17:10 > 0:17:15but straight ahead was a boat-shaped channel in the ice.

0:17:15 > 0:17:19"That must be where Pirate Ginger Tom went," declared Captain Wag.

0:17:19 > 0:17:21They sailed between great sheets of ice,

0:17:21 > 0:17:25just avoiding being crushed by towering icebergs.

0:17:25 > 0:17:28Sometimes they would see a walrus or a seal sitting on the ice,

0:17:28 > 0:17:30or swimming by their side.

0:17:30 > 0:17:34And then they saw Pirate Ginger Tom's ship in the distance.

0:17:34 > 0:17:36As they got nearer,

0:17:36 > 0:17:39they could see a crowd of polar bears trying to climb on board.

0:17:39 > 0:17:44"Come on, lads! It looks like we're just in time," cried Captain Wag.

0:17:44 > 0:17:47Ginger Tom's crew were running around the deck

0:17:47 > 0:17:50and up and down the rigging in fright,

0:17:50 > 0:17:53as the polar bears crowded round the ship, growling.

0:17:53 > 0:17:58Then Ginger Tom spotted The Saucy Paw. "It's a ship, lads!

0:17:58 > 0:18:02"We're saved." Captain Wag and his crew came alongside.

0:18:02 > 0:18:05"Get away from that ship, you varmints!"

0:18:05 > 0:18:07shouted Captain Wag to the polar bears.

0:18:07 > 0:18:10The polar bears stopped what they were doing

0:18:10 > 0:18:13and moved towards The Saucy Paw.

0:18:13 > 0:18:17Captain Wag, One-Eyed Jack and Old Scratch shook with fear

0:18:17 > 0:18:20as the polar bears came closer and closer.

0:18:20 > 0:18:22One enormous polar bear growled.

0:18:23 > 0:18:26"Who are you calling varmints?"

0:18:26 > 0:18:30Captain Wag spoke up, bravely,

0:18:30 > 0:18:34"I am Captain Wag and we are here to save Pirate Ginger Tom

0:18:34 > 0:18:38"and his crew from being eaten by you polar bears."

0:18:38 > 0:18:41"Eaten?" roared the bear,

0:18:41 > 0:18:44"Eaten? We don't want to eat those daft cats,

0:18:44 > 0:18:48"we just want to get this wreck off the ice, it's making such a mess.

0:18:48 > 0:18:52"Bits of wood, here, bits of rope, there, you can't move without

0:18:52 > 0:18:56"tripping over something and all those cats do is mew at us."

0:18:56 > 0:19:00Captain Wag was relieved and called up to Ginger Tom,

0:19:00 > 0:19:03"Ahoy, there, Ginger Tom, you old fool.

0:19:03 > 0:19:08"These bears are trying to help you, not eat you," he said, laughing.

0:19:08 > 0:19:10"If you come down, lend a hand,

0:19:10 > 0:19:13"we should be able to get your ship off this ice."

0:19:13 > 0:19:17So Ginger Tom and his crew sheepishly climbed down and,

0:19:17 > 0:19:21together with polar bears, Captain Wag, One-Eyed Jack

0:19:21 > 0:19:26and Old Scratch, they managed to push the ship off the ice.

0:19:26 > 0:19:29Ginger Tom turned to Captain Wag, "Thank you for coming

0:19:29 > 0:19:33"to our rescue, Wag. I will not forget such a brave deed."

0:19:33 > 0:19:35"You're a rogue,

0:19:35 > 0:19:38"but I couldn't leave you out here to freeze,"

0:19:38 > 0:19:42said Captain Wag, putting his arm around Ginger Tom's shoulder.

0:19:42 > 0:19:48And Captain Wag and Pirate Ginger Tom laughed heartily and long,

0:19:48 > 0:19:49together.
