1:10:07 > 1:10:08Hello. I'm Sally.

1:10:08 > 1:10:13Have you got a favourite toy you take everywhere?

1:10:13 > 1:10:15You have?

1:10:15 > 1:10:18There's a little boy in tonight's bedtime story

1:10:18 > 1:10:21who loves his toy more than you can imagine.

1:10:21 > 1:10:24Let me tell you about him in tonight's story,

1:10:24 > 1:10:28which is called Dogger and is written by Shirley Hughes.

1:10:29 > 1:10:33Once there was a soft, brown toy called Dogger.

1:10:33 > 1:10:38One of his ears pointed upwards and the other flopped over.

1:10:38 > 1:10:42His fur was worn in places because he was quite old.

1:10:42 > 1:10:44He belonged to Dave.

1:10:45 > 1:10:49Dave was very fond of Dogger. He took him everywhere.

1:10:49 > 1:10:53Sometimes he gave him rides in a trolley.

1:10:53 > 1:10:57Sometimes he pulled him along on a string lead, like a real dog.

1:10:57 > 1:11:02When it was cold, he wrapped him up in a bit of blanket.

1:11:02 > 1:11:06Now and again, Dave's mum said Dogger was getting much too dirty.

1:11:06 > 1:11:10She showed Dave how to wash him in a bowl of soapy water.

1:11:10 > 1:11:14Then they hung him up by his tail on the washing line to dry.

1:11:14 > 1:11:16Dave's baby brother, Joe, liked hard toys.

1:11:16 > 1:11:20He liked putting them in his mouth and biting on them

1:11:20 > 1:11:22because he was getting teeth.

1:11:22 > 1:11:26Dave's big sister, Bella, took seven teddies to bed every night.

1:11:26 > 1:11:31She had to sleep up against the wall to stop herself from falling out.

1:11:31 > 1:11:34But Dave liked only Dogger.

1:11:34 > 1:11:40One afternoon, Dave and Mum set out to collect Bella from school.

1:11:40 > 1:11:43Mum took Joe in the pushchair and Dave took Dogger.

1:11:43 > 1:11:46Next to the school gate was a playing field.

1:11:46 > 1:11:49Men with ladders were putting up coloured flags.

1:11:49 > 1:11:54There was going to be a summer fair to get money for the school.

1:11:54 > 1:11:58Dave pushed Dogger up against the railings to show him.

1:11:58 > 1:12:02Just then, the children started to come out of school.

1:12:02 > 1:12:06An ice cream van came around the corner playing a tune.

1:12:06 > 1:12:09Bella ran up with her satchel flying.

1:12:09 > 1:12:11"Mum? Can we have an ice cream?"

1:12:11 > 1:12:15Mum gave her the money for two cones.

1:12:15 > 1:12:18Joe didn't have a whole ice cream. He was too dribbly.

1:12:18 > 1:12:22On the way home, Dave walked beside the pushchair,

1:12:22 > 1:12:24giving Joe licks of his ice cream.

1:12:24 > 1:12:29Joe kicked his feet about and shouted for, "More!"

1:12:29 > 1:12:32At tea-time, Dave was rather quiet.

1:12:34 > 1:12:38In the bath, he was even quieter.

1:12:38 > 1:12:43At bedtime, he said, "I want Dogger."

1:12:43 > 1:12:48But Dogger was nowhere to be found.

1:12:48 > 1:12:51Mum looked under the bed. She looked behind the cupboard.

1:12:51 > 1:12:55She searched in the kitchen and underneath the stairs.

1:12:55 > 1:12:57Dave watched through the banisters.

1:12:57 > 1:13:00Joe watched through the bars of his cot.

1:13:00 > 1:13:02Bella joined in to look for Dogger.

1:13:02 > 1:13:05She turned out her toy box, but he wasn't in there.

1:13:05 > 1:13:08When dad came home, he looked for Dogger.

1:13:08 > 1:13:11He searched in the shed and down the garden path.

1:13:11 > 1:13:14But Dogger was quite lost.

1:13:15 > 1:13:18Dave was very sad when he went to bed.

1:13:18 > 1:13:22Bella lent him one of her teddies to go to sleep with,

1:13:22 > 1:13:24but it was not the same thing as Dogger.

1:13:24 > 1:13:28Dave kept waking in the night, missing him.

1:13:29 > 1:13:34The next day was Saturday and they all went to the school summer fair.

1:13:34 > 1:13:38The playing field was full of stalls and sideshows.

1:13:39 > 1:13:42There was a fancy-dress parade.

1:13:44 > 1:13:47Then there were sports, with an egg and spoon race,

1:13:47 > 1:13:53a wheelbarrow race and a fathers' race.

1:13:56 > 1:13:59Bella was very good at races.

1:13:59 > 1:14:02She won the three-legged race with her friend Barbara.

1:14:02 > 1:14:06"Wouldn't you like to go in for a race?" they asked Dave.

1:14:08 > 1:14:13But Dave didn't feel like racing. He was missing Dogger too much.

1:14:13 > 1:14:16Then another very exciting thing happened to Bella.

1:14:16 > 1:14:19She won first prize in a raffle!

1:14:19 > 1:14:23It was a huge, yellow teddy bear wearing a beautiful blue silk bow.

1:14:23 > 1:14:26He was almost as big as Dave.

1:14:26 > 1:14:29Dave didn't like that teddy at all.

1:14:29 > 1:14:33He didn't like Bella much either because she kept winning things.

1:14:33 > 1:14:37He went off on his own to look at the stalls.

1:14:37 > 1:14:42One lady had a toy stall full of knitted ducks and cars

1:14:42 > 1:14:45and baby dolls in bonnets.

1:14:45 > 1:14:48And there, at the very back of the stall,

1:14:48 > 1:14:51behind a lot of other toys, was Dogger!

1:14:51 > 1:14:54He was wearing a ticket saying, "5p."

1:14:54 > 1:14:57There were a lot of people at the stall.

1:14:57 > 1:15:00Dave told the lady it was his Dogger who got lost

1:15:00 > 1:15:04and was on the stall by mistake! But she wasn't listening.

1:15:04 > 1:15:09He looked in his pocket. He had 3p, but that wasn't enough.

1:15:09 > 1:15:14He ran to find Mum and Dad to ask them to buy Dogger back at once!

1:15:14 > 1:15:18Dave went everywhere in the crowd, but he couldn't see Mum and Dad.

1:15:18 > 1:15:20He thought he was going to cry!

1:15:20 > 1:15:22At last, he found Bella by the cakes.

1:15:22 > 1:15:27She and Dave ran back to the toy stall as fast as they could,

1:15:27 > 1:15:30but something terrible had happened.

1:15:30 > 1:15:35Dogger had just been bought by a little girl.

1:15:35 > 1:15:38She was already walking off with him.

1:15:38 > 1:15:40Dave began to cry.

1:15:40 > 1:15:44Bella tried to explain that Dogger really belonged to Dave

1:15:44 > 1:15:46and could they buy him back?

1:15:46 > 1:15:48But the little girl said, "No."

1:15:48 > 1:15:54She said she bought Dogger with her own money and she wanted him.

1:15:54 > 1:15:56She held on to him very tightly.

1:15:56 > 1:16:01Dave cried and cried and the little girl started to cry, too.

1:16:02 > 1:16:04But out of the corner of her eye,

1:16:04 > 1:16:07she caught sight of Bella's big yellow teddy.

1:16:07 > 1:16:09She stopped crying

1:16:09 > 1:16:14and put out her hand to stroke his beautiful blue silk bow.

1:16:14 > 1:16:18Then Bella did something very kind.

1:16:20 > 1:16:24"Would you swap this teddy for my brother's dog?" she asked.

1:16:25 > 1:16:30Right away, the little girl stopped crying and began to smile.

1:16:30 > 1:16:35She held out Dogger to Dave and took the big teddy instead

1:16:35 > 1:16:37and went off with him in her arms.

1:16:37 > 1:16:40Then Dave smiled, too.

1:16:40 > 1:16:42He hugged Dogger.

1:16:42 > 1:16:45And he hugged Bella around the waist.

1:16:45 > 1:16:47"Thank you, Bella," he said.

1:16:49 > 1:16:53That night, Dave had Dogger in bed beside him.

1:16:53 > 1:16:56Bella was practising somersaults.

1:16:56 > 1:16:59"Shall you miss that big teddy?" Dave asked her.

1:16:59 > 1:17:01"No," said Bella.

1:17:01 > 1:17:05"I didn't like him. He was too big and his eyes were too staring.

1:17:05 > 1:17:10"And if I had another teddy in my bed, there wouldn't be room for me."

1:17:12 > 1:17:15And that story was called Dogger.

1:17:15 > 1:17:18I hope you're hugging your favourite toy.

1:17:18 > 1:17:20Make sure you don't lose it.

1:17:20 > 1:17:24Snuggle down now and have sweet dreams

1:17:24 > 1:17:27and I'll see you soon for another bedtime story.
