0:05:13 > 0:05:15Hiya. My name's Ore.

0:05:15 > 0:05:19I love to have a bit of milk before bedtime. Do you?

0:05:19 > 0:05:23Tonight's bedtime story is about someone who lives in a country

0:05:23 > 0:05:27called Nigeria in Africa. They enjoy a drink of milk, too.

0:05:27 > 0:05:29Would you like to hear it? Great.

0:05:29 > 0:05:32Well, get yourself comfy.

0:05:32 > 0:05:35This story is called Don't Spill The Milk,

0:05:35 > 0:05:39and it's by Stephen Davies and Christopher Corr.

0:05:39 > 0:05:44Penda lived in a tiny village in Africa with her mum and her aunties.

0:05:44 > 0:05:46It was rainy season,

0:05:46 > 0:05:50so Penda's dad was up in the grasslands looking after the sheep.

0:05:50 > 0:05:53"Penda," said her mum one day,

0:05:53 > 0:05:56"I'm going to take a bowl of milk to Daddy.

0:05:56 > 0:05:59"I'll be back this afternoon."

0:05:59 > 0:06:02"I know where the grasslands are." said Penda.

0:06:02 > 0:06:06"Let me take Daddy his milk. Please? Please? Please?"

0:06:06 > 0:06:13"All right," said her mum, "but try not to spill any milk on the way.

0:06:13 > 0:06:15Penda ran to milk the cow.

0:06:15 > 0:06:19She filled the bowl, put it on her head,

0:06:19 > 0:06:22stood up and began to walk.

0:06:22 > 0:06:27"Steady," Penda whispered to herself. "Gently does it, girl.

0:06:27 > 0:06:32"Don't wiggle, don't wobble, don't try to rush it, girl."

0:06:32 > 0:06:35Penda picked a path across the uppy-downy dunes,

0:06:35 > 0:06:39past a caravan of camels and a flock of desert djinns.

0:06:39 > 0:06:43"Don't slip, don't slide, girl. Don't fall over.

0:06:43 > 0:06:47"Don't let a single droplet drop on the sand."

0:06:47 > 0:06:51It was the day of the rainy season mask dance.

0:06:51 > 0:06:55Penda wove her way amid a million dancing beasties.

0:06:55 > 0:06:59"Walk tall, walk steady, eyes on the horizon, girl.

0:06:59 > 0:07:04"Don't even think about spilling any milk."

0:07:04 > 0:07:08The great River Niger was dark and wide.

0:07:08 > 0:07:13Penda took a ride in a stinky fishing boat.

0:07:13 > 0:07:18"Don't shiver, don't quiver, don't fall in the river, girl.

0:07:18 > 0:07:21"Keep it on your head, girl. Milk don't float."

0:07:21 > 0:07:2515 pale giraffes were stalking across the plains,

0:07:25 > 0:07:29like 15 aliens on a dusty moon.

0:07:29 > 0:07:34"Don't look, don't turn your head, just walk on through.

0:07:34 > 0:07:38"You're not at the zoo, girl. You've got work to do."

0:07:38 > 0:07:44Oh, no! One final mountain looming high.

0:07:44 > 0:07:47Penda breathed in deep.

0:07:47 > 0:07:49And up she climbed.

0:07:49 > 0:07:52"Left foot, right foot. Never give up, girl.

0:07:52 > 0:07:57"Left hand, right hand, all the way up, now."

0:07:57 > 0:08:01At last, Penda arrived at the grasslands.

0:08:01 > 0:08:04A flock of woolly sheep were munching grass

0:08:04 > 0:08:08and there, in the middle, chilling in the shade of a mango tree,

0:08:08 > 0:08:10sat Penda's dad.

0:08:10 > 0:08:15"Hi, Daddy." "Hi, Penda. Nice to see you."

0:08:15 > 0:08:19"I've brought you some milk," said Penda.

0:08:19 > 0:08:22She took the bowl off her head

0:08:22 > 0:08:26but just as she was passing it to Daddy...

0:08:26 > 0:08:28Splosh!

0:08:28 > 0:08:33A big, fat mango landed right in the bowl.

0:08:33 > 0:08:36Daddy's milk spilt everywhere.

0:08:36 > 0:08:40"I don't believe it!" wailed Penda.

0:08:40 > 0:08:43"I carried that milk for miles and miles.

0:08:43 > 0:08:46"Over the dunes and across the river, and up the mountain

0:08:46 > 0:08:49"and I didn't stop to watch the masked dance

0:08:49 > 0:08:51"or the white giraffes

0:08:51 > 0:08:56"because I didn't want to spill a single drop, and now look!

0:08:56 > 0:08:58"It's all gone!"

0:08:58 > 0:09:02Daddy gave Penda a big hug.

0:09:02 > 0:09:05"It's not all gone," he whispered.

0:09:05 > 0:09:09"There was more than milk in that bowl."

0:09:09 > 0:09:12"Huh?" said Penda.

0:09:12 > 0:09:17"It's true." said Daddy. "Your love for me was in that bowl as well.

0:09:17 > 0:09:20"You carried it over the dunes and across the river

0:09:20 > 0:09:22"and up the mountain.

0:09:22 > 0:09:27"You carried it past the masked dance and the white giraffes.

0:09:27 > 0:09:30"You brought it all the way up to the grasslands

0:09:30 > 0:09:33"and you gave it to me, just fine.

0:09:33 > 0:09:38"That bowl was full of love, girl, and it still is.

0:09:38 > 0:09:42"You didn't spill a drop."

0:09:42 > 0:09:44Penda wiped away her tears.

0:09:44 > 0:09:47She pointed at the big, fat mango.

0:09:47 > 0:09:50"I think it must be lunchtime," she said.

0:09:50 > 0:09:53"I agree," said Daddy.

0:09:53 > 0:09:58"As it happens, I prefer mango to milk any day."

0:09:58 > 0:10:03Daddy took a knife and cut the mango into three big, juicy pieces.

0:10:03 > 0:10:08Penda ate that first piece. "Yummy!" she said.

0:10:08 > 0:10:12Daddy ate the second piece. "Scrummy!" he said.

0:10:12 > 0:10:16The third piece was still in the bowl.

0:10:16 > 0:10:18"For Mummy?" asked Penda.

0:10:18 > 0:10:21"That's right," said Daddy.

0:10:21 > 0:10:25"Tell her it comes with all my love."

0:10:29 > 0:10:33That story was called Don't Spill The Milk.

0:10:33 > 0:10:34Poor Penda.

0:10:34 > 0:10:37She carried that milk so carefully, didn't she?

0:10:37 > 0:10:41Her daddy didn't mind it was spilled at the last moment, did he?

0:10:41 > 0:10:43He was just pleased to see her.

0:10:43 > 0:10:47I do hope that last slice of mango got back to Penda's mum, though.

0:10:47 > 0:10:50Now, it's time for you to go to bed.

0:10:50 > 0:10:54Perhaps someone who loves you very much will tuck you in.

0:10:54 > 0:10:58I'll say night-night and see you again for another bedtime story.

0:10:58 > 0:11:01I'm going to have another sip of milk.
