0:11:03 > 0:11:05CBeebies Bedtime Story.
0:11:07 > 0:11:10Hello. My name is Derek.
0:11:10 > 0:11:13I'm warming myself in front of the fire.
0:11:13 > 0:11:16Are you all snuggled up, nice and warm?
0:11:16 > 0:11:18Good.
0:11:18 > 0:11:23I know a story about a frog who doesn't like the winter cold.
0:11:23 > 0:11:25Would you like to hear it?
0:11:25 > 0:11:30It's called Frog In Winter, and it's by Max Velthuis.
0:11:32 > 0:11:34When Frog got up one morning,
0:11:34 > 0:11:39he realised at once that something was wrong with the world.
0:11:39 > 0:11:41Something had changed.
0:11:41 > 0:11:43He went to the window
0:11:43 > 0:11:49and was astonished to see that everything was completely white.
0:11:49 > 0:11:51He rushed outside in confusion.
0:11:51 > 0:11:54There was snow everywhere.
0:11:54 > 0:11:56It was slippery under his feet.
0:11:56 > 0:12:00Suddenly he felt himself falling over, backwards,
0:12:00 > 0:12:02down the bank into the river.
0:12:02 > 0:12:07But the river was frozen, and Frog lay on his back on the cold,
0:12:07 > 0:12:09hard ice.
0:12:09 > 0:12:14"If there's no water, I won't be able to wash," he thought.
0:12:14 > 0:12:19Shocked, shivering with cold, he sat on the bank.
0:12:19 > 0:12:23Then Duck came hurrying towards him on her skates.
0:12:23 > 0:12:25"Hello, Frog," she said.
0:12:25 > 0:12:30"Nice weather today. Are you coming skating?"
0:12:30 > 0:12:34"N-no, I'm freezing," replied Frog.
0:12:34 > 0:12:37"But skating is good for you," said Duck.
0:12:37 > 0:12:39"I'll teach you."
0:12:39 > 0:12:44So, Duck gave Frog her skates and her scarf.
0:12:44 > 0:12:48She pushed him, and he slid quickly across the ice.
0:12:48 > 0:12:51But not for long. Soon he fell.
0:12:52 > 0:12:56"Aren't you enjoying yourself?" said Duck.
0:12:56 > 0:13:00But Frog was nearly frozen solid,
0:13:00 > 0:13:03and his teeth were chattering with cold.
0:13:03 > 0:13:08"Y-y-you've got a warm, feathery coat,
0:13:08 > 0:13:13"but I'm just a bare frog," he said.
0:13:13 > 0:13:16"You're right," said Duck.
0:13:16 > 0:13:20"You better keep my scarf, as I must be on my way."
0:13:21 > 0:13:25Then Pig appeared with a basket of firewood on her back.
0:13:25 > 0:13:31A-a-aren't you freezing, Pig?" asked Frog.
0:13:31 > 0:13:33"Freezing?!" said Pig.
0:13:33 > 0:13:38"No, I'm enjoying the fresh, healthy air.
0:13:38 > 0:13:42"Winter is the most beautiful season."
0:13:42 > 0:13:48"Y-y-you have a nice layer of fat to keep you warm,
0:13:48 > 0:13:53"but what do I have?" said Frog.
0:13:53 > 0:13:56"Poor Frog," thought Pig.
0:13:56 > 0:13:59"I wish I could help him."
0:13:59 > 0:14:02"One, two, one, two!" Hare ran up.
0:14:02 > 0:14:05He was jogging in the snow.
0:14:05 > 0:14:08"Hurrah!" he called, joyously.
0:14:08 > 0:14:11"Sport makes you healthy. Hurrah for sport!
0:14:11 > 0:14:13"Three cheers for sport.
0:14:13 > 0:14:18"Why don't you join in, Frog? It's great fun, keeping fit."
0:14:18 > 0:14:21"I-I'm freezing," said Frog.
0:14:21 > 0:14:26"You've got warm fur, but I have nothing."
0:14:27 > 0:14:29Sadly, he went home.
0:14:31 > 0:14:37The next day, his friends invited him to have a snowball fight.
0:14:37 > 0:14:41But Frog...couldn't share in the fun.
0:14:41 > 0:14:42THUD
0:14:42 > 0:14:47"I-I'm free-zing!" he murmured.
0:14:47 > 0:14:51"I'm only a bare frog."
0:14:53 > 0:14:56And, miserably, he stumbled home.
0:14:57 > 0:15:01He sat next to the fire for the rest of the day,
0:15:01 > 0:15:06dreaming of spring and summer.
0:15:06 > 0:15:09He burnt every last piece of wood.
0:15:09 > 0:15:12When the fire went out, he went outside to gather more logs,
0:15:12 > 0:15:15but he couldn't find any wood in the snow.
0:15:15 > 0:15:18BREEZE BLOWS
0:15:18 > 0:15:21He walked and walked until he lost his way.
0:15:21 > 0:15:23Everything was white.
0:15:24 > 0:15:29Exhausted, he lay down in the snow.
0:15:29 > 0:15:31A bare frog.
0:15:33 > 0:15:36And there his friends found him.
0:15:36 > 0:15:41"I-I-I'm f-f-freezing,"
0:15:41 > 0:15:43whispered Frog.
0:15:43 > 0:15:46"Come on," said Hare.
0:15:46 > 0:15:50And carefully they carried him home and put him to bed.
0:15:51 > 0:15:54Hare collected wood and lit a fire.
0:15:54 > 0:15:59Pig cooked a hot, nourishing soup. And Duck cheered Frog up.
0:16:00 > 0:16:04In the evenings that followed, everyone listened
0:16:04 > 0:16:09while Hare read wonderful stories about spring and summer.
0:16:09 > 0:16:14Pig knitted Frog a warm pullover in two colours.
0:16:14 > 0:16:17Frog enjoyed the attention from his friends.
0:16:17 > 0:16:21Winter is wonderful when you can spend it in bed.
0:16:22 > 0:16:27Then the day came when Frog was well enough to get up.
0:16:27 > 0:16:30Without fur, fat or feathers,
0:16:30 > 0:16:33but dressed in his new pullover,
0:16:33 > 0:16:36he took his first steps in the snow.
0:16:37 > 0:16:42"Well?" asked Hare, curiously.
0:16:42 > 0:16:45"It's gooood!"
0:16:45 > 0:16:47answered Frog, bravely.
0:16:48 > 0:16:51So, the long winter passed.
0:16:51 > 0:16:54But one morning, when Frog
0:16:54 > 0:16:58opened his eyes, he noticed at once something was different.
0:16:59 > 0:17:04Bright light streamed in the window.
0:17:04 > 0:17:07Quickly, he jumped out of bed and ran outside.
0:17:07 > 0:17:10The world was bright green,
0:17:10 > 0:17:14and the sun shone in the sky.
0:17:14 > 0:17:18"Hurray!" he cried.
0:17:18 > 0:17:23"It's good to be a frog! How wonderful.
0:17:24 > 0:17:29"I can feel the sun's rays on my bare back."
0:17:29 > 0:17:34His friends were happy to see Frog so cheerful.
0:17:34 > 0:17:39"What would we do without Frog?" laughed Hare.
0:17:39 > 0:17:43"I can't think," said Pig.
0:17:43 > 0:17:45"No," agreed Duck.
0:17:45 > 0:17:50"Life just wouldn't be the same without him."
0:17:52 > 0:17:56That story was called Frog In Winter.
0:17:56 > 0:18:01Isn't Frog lucky to have such caring friends,
0:18:01 > 0:18:05who looked after him through the long, cold winter?
0:18:05 > 0:18:07Now it's time for you to get snuggled up,
0:18:07 > 0:18:10cosy and warm in your bed.
0:18:10 > 0:18:12I'll see you again...soon,
0:18:12 > 0:18:16for another bedtime story. Sleep tight.
