0:00:06 > 0:00:08Hello.

0:00:08 > 0:00:12My name is Edith and I'm here to tell you a bedtime story

0:00:12 > 0:00:15all about an unexpected mix-up.

0:00:15 > 0:00:17Would you like to hear it?

0:00:17 > 0:00:21You would? Great. Well, get yourself nice and comfortable.

0:00:21 > 0:00:25The story's called The Princess And The Pig

0:00:25 > 0:00:29and it's by Jonathan Emmett and Poly Bernatene.

0:00:30 > 0:00:35Not that long ago, in a kingdom not far from here,

0:00:35 > 0:00:40a farmer was travelling home from market with a cart-load of straw.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43The farmer was so poor, he didn't have a horse

0:00:43 > 0:00:46and had to pull his own cart.

0:00:47 > 0:00:51In the back of the cart lay a tiny, pink piglet.

0:00:51 > 0:00:54Nobody wanted to buy the piglet at market,

0:00:54 > 0:00:57but the farmer had taken pity on it.

0:00:57 > 0:01:00"I'll call you Pigmella," he decided,

0:01:00 > 0:01:03as this seemed like a good name for a pig.

0:01:03 > 0:01:04It was a hot day

0:01:04 > 0:01:09and the farmer stopped to rest in the shade of a great castle.

0:01:09 > 0:01:12Far, far above him, on a high balcony,

0:01:12 > 0:01:16a queen was inspecting her new baby daughter.

0:01:16 > 0:01:20The Queen was so rich that she has seven nannies

0:01:20 > 0:01:22and didn't have to look after her own child.

0:01:24 > 0:01:29The Queen picked the baby out of her cot and held her at arm's length.

0:01:31 > 0:01:34"I'll call it Priscilla," she decided,

0:01:34 > 0:01:38as this seemed like a good name for a princess.

0:01:38 > 0:01:43A moment later, a wet squelching noise came from the baby's nappy,

0:01:43 > 0:01:47closely followed by an awful smell.

0:01:47 > 0:01:50"Yuck!" shrieked the Queen,

0:01:50 > 0:01:53dropping the baby and running off to find the royal nannies.

0:01:54 > 0:01:57She left so quickly, she didn't notice

0:01:57 > 0:02:02that she had dropped the baby over the edge of the balcony.

0:02:02 > 0:02:07Down, down, down went the baby, into the farmer's cart.

0:02:08 > 0:02:14Up, up, up flew the piglet, into the princess' cot.

0:02:16 > 0:02:17When the Queen returned

0:02:17 > 0:02:21and found the piglet lying where the baby should have been,

0:02:21 > 0:02:28she let out an even louder shriek and fainted into the nannies' arms.

0:02:28 > 0:02:31The King thought he knew what had happened.

0:02:31 > 0:02:35"A bad fairy has done this," he explained.

0:02:35 > 0:02:39"The fairy wasn't invited to the princess' christening,

0:02:39 > 0:02:43"so she's turned the baby into a piglet to get her revenge.

0:02:43 > 0:02:47"It's the sort of thing that happens all the while in books."

0:02:47 > 0:02:51Meanwhile, the farmer had returned home

0:02:51 > 0:02:54and was startled to discover a baby girl

0:02:54 > 0:02:58lying where the piglet should have been.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01The farmer's wife thought she knew what had happened.

0:03:01 > 0:03:04"A good fairy has done this," she explained.

0:03:04 > 0:03:07"The fairy knew how poor and honest we are,

0:03:07 > 0:03:10"and how badly we want a child

0:03:10 > 0:03:13"so she's turned the piglet into a baby.

0:03:13 > 0:03:17"It's the sort of thing that happens all the while in books."

0:03:17 > 0:03:22And so, without a second thought, the baby became Pigmella,

0:03:22 > 0:03:23the farmer's daughter.

0:03:23 > 0:03:27And the piglet became Priscilla, the princess.

0:03:29 > 0:03:34It wasn't long before Pigmella was able to eat,

0:03:34 > 0:03:35walk,

0:03:35 > 0:03:38and dress all by herself.

0:03:38 > 0:03:43And the farmer and his wife soon forgot that she'd ever been a pig.

0:03:44 > 0:03:47Things were not so easy for Priscilla.

0:03:53 > 0:03:56But the King and Queen never let anyone forget

0:03:56 > 0:04:00that she was really a princess.

0:04:00 > 0:04:06As Pigmella grew older, she grew clever and beautiful

0:04:06 > 0:04:09and was admired by everyone she met.

0:04:09 > 0:04:16As Priscilla grew older, she grew not so clever and not so beautiful

0:04:16 > 0:04:19and was avoided by everyone she met.

0:04:21 > 0:04:24Then one day, the farmer's wife overheard

0:04:24 > 0:04:26some of the castle servants

0:04:26 > 0:04:31talking about the princess who had turned into a pig.

0:04:31 > 0:04:37"It's just like what happened to Pigmella," she told her husband.

0:04:37 > 0:04:39"Only the other way around."

0:04:39 > 0:04:42The farmer soon guessed what had happened.

0:04:42 > 0:04:46"The princess and the pig must have swapped places somehow,"

0:04:46 > 0:04:47he explained.

0:04:47 > 0:04:51"It's the sort of thing that happens all the while in books."

0:04:51 > 0:04:55The poor farmer and his wife were very unhappy.

0:04:55 > 0:04:56They loved Pigmella,

0:04:56 > 0:05:00but they knew they must return her to her rightful home.

0:05:02 > 0:05:05Pigmella was also unhappy. She loved the farmer and his wife

0:05:05 > 0:05:08and did not want to live with anyone else.

0:05:08 > 0:05:11But they were an honest family, so the next day,

0:05:11 > 0:05:15they all went to the castle to see the King and Queen.

0:05:15 > 0:05:18The King and Queen listened to the farmer's story,

0:05:18 > 0:05:19but they didn't believe it.

0:05:19 > 0:05:22"What nonsense," cried the Queen.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25"Ridiculous," laughed the King.

0:05:25 > 0:05:27"This girl may be clever and beautiful,

0:05:27 > 0:05:31"but she does not look or speak like a proper princess."

0:05:31 > 0:05:34The Queen thought she knew what was happening.

0:05:34 > 0:05:38"It's a trick," she declared. "This girl is just a farmer's daughter,

0:05:38 > 0:05:43"pretending to be a princess in the hope she might marry a prince.

0:05:43 > 0:05:47"It's the sort of thing that happens all the while in books."

0:05:47 > 0:05:52And so Pigmella returned home with the farmer and his wife,

0:05:52 > 0:05:56where she married a young shepherd and lived happily ever after,

0:05:56 > 0:05:59and never once wished that she'd been a princess.

0:06:00 > 0:06:05And Priscilla also got married to a handsome prince,

0:06:05 > 0:06:08although he had to be talked into it.

0:06:08 > 0:06:13"Priscilla was changed into a pig by a bad fairy," the King explained.

0:06:13 > 0:06:17"But once you kiss her, the spell will be broken and she'll turn back

0:06:17 > 0:06:20"into a beautiful princess," added the Queen.

0:06:20 > 0:06:24"It's the sort of thing that happens all the while in books,"

0:06:24 > 0:06:26they assured him.

0:06:26 > 0:06:28But unfortunately for the prince,

0:06:28 > 0:06:32it's not the sort of thing that happens in this particular book.

0:06:35 > 0:06:37That was a funny story, wasn't it?

0:06:37 > 0:06:40It was called The Princess And The Pig

0:06:40 > 0:06:42and I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

0:06:42 > 0:06:46It's bedtime now, so you better get ready for a good, long sleep.

0:06:46 > 0:06:50I'll be back again soon with another story. Sleep tight.
