0:00:06 > 0:00:09Hello. My name's Ellie.

0:00:09 > 0:00:12What can you see out of your window?

0:00:12 > 0:00:16Maybe a street or some shops. Can you see your garden?

0:00:16 > 0:00:17Or maybe a field?

0:00:17 > 0:00:21Tonight's bedtime story is about a couple who have a lovely view

0:00:21 > 0:00:23out of their window.

0:00:23 > 0:00:26Well, half of a lovely view anyway.

0:00:26 > 0:00:28Do you want to hear all about them?

0:00:28 > 0:00:32The story is called The Hill And The Rock, and it's by David McKee.

0:00:33 > 0:00:38Mrs and Mrs Quest lived in a little house on the very top of a hill,

0:00:38 > 0:00:41the only hill in that part of the country.

0:00:41 > 0:00:45Because it was the only hill, there were lots of visitors.

0:00:45 > 0:00:47The views were wonderful.

0:00:47 > 0:00:51Getting to the top of the hill was a bit hard for the visitors,

0:00:51 > 0:00:54but going home was easy.

0:00:54 > 0:00:58Everyone said it was a perfect place to live.

0:00:58 > 0:01:01"It would be perfect," said Mrs Quest to her husband,

0:01:01 > 0:01:03"if it wasn't for the rock."

0:01:03 > 0:01:06The rock stood at the back of the house

0:01:06 > 0:01:09and blocked half of the view from the kitchen window.

0:01:09 > 0:01:12"It is perfect," said Mr Quest.

0:01:12 > 0:01:16"Half of our view is better than the whole of anyone else's view."

0:01:16 > 0:01:18"Besides," said Mr Quest.

0:01:18 > 0:01:22"I can climb on top of the rock and see even further."

0:01:22 > 0:01:25But Mrs Quest kept on about the rock.

0:01:25 > 0:01:30"You can go to work, but I have to stay and look at that rock."

0:01:30 > 0:01:33Or, "I spend a lot of time in that kitchen."

0:01:33 > 0:01:37And often just, "It's a pity about the rock."

0:01:37 > 0:01:41Eventually, one night, Mr Quest said, "I'll see about it tomorrow."

0:01:41 > 0:01:43And Mrs Quest was happy.

0:01:43 > 0:01:48The next day, Mr Quest dug away the ground outside the rock.

0:01:48 > 0:01:51Then he pushed it from the other side.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54The rock rolled all the way to the bottom of the hill.

0:01:56 > 0:01:58"Hurrah!" cheered Mr Quest.

0:01:58 > 0:02:03Mrs Quest was delighted. Now she had a full view from the kitchen window.

0:02:04 > 0:02:08But that night, she said, "What's that funny hissing sound?"

0:02:08 > 0:02:12Her husband, who was tired out from his hard work,

0:02:12 > 0:02:14was already fast asleep.

0:02:14 > 0:02:17The following night, it was Mr Quest who said,

0:02:17 > 0:02:19"What's that funny hissing sound?"

0:02:19 > 0:02:24"I don't know," said Mrs Quest. "But I heard it last night as well."

0:02:24 > 0:02:26The day after that,

0:02:26 > 0:02:30Mr Quest thought it seemed easier going home from work.

0:02:30 > 0:02:34When he arrived home, he found his wife crying.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37"The hill is going down," she sobbed.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39"The hissing is the air in the hill

0:02:39 > 0:02:42"escaping from the hole where the rock was."

0:02:42 > 0:02:45Sure enough, day after day,

0:02:45 > 0:02:48night after night, the hill went down,

0:02:48 > 0:02:51until one day, it was gone altogether.

0:02:51 > 0:02:55"Now we're just the same as everyone else," said Mr Quest.

0:02:56 > 0:02:59Visitors still came out of curiosity,

0:02:59 > 0:03:03but they didn't stay long. There was nothing to see.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06"Nice day," they would say, and go on their way.

0:03:06 > 0:03:10Poor Mrs Quest. Without the hill, there wasn't any view,

0:03:10 > 0:03:12except from the kitchen window,

0:03:12 > 0:03:16where she could still see the rock in the distance.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19And the hissing still did not stop.

0:03:19 > 0:03:21Day and night, night and day,

0:03:21 > 0:03:24the house still kept going down,

0:03:24 > 0:03:27until it was at the bottom of a valley.

0:03:27 > 0:03:29Visitors came, for after all,

0:03:29 > 0:03:32it was the only valley in that part of the country.

0:03:32 > 0:03:34And it was easy to get there.

0:03:34 > 0:03:36They didn't stay long.

0:03:36 > 0:03:38The side of a valley isn't much of a view,

0:03:38 > 0:03:41and it was hard work to go home.

0:03:41 > 0:03:45One night, a new noise frightened Mr and Mrs Quest,

0:03:45 > 0:03:47a terrible rumbling and a crash.

0:03:47 > 0:03:50Mr Quest peeped out from under the bedclothes

0:03:50 > 0:03:53and then went to see what was happening.

0:03:53 > 0:03:55In the dark, he could not see a thing.

0:03:55 > 0:04:01He bolted the door, hurried back to bed and hid under the covers again.

0:04:02 > 0:04:06In the morning, Mr Quest looked carefully outside.

0:04:07 > 0:04:10"It's the rock!" he shouted to Mrs Quest.

0:04:10 > 0:04:13"It's rolled down the valley and back into the hole."

0:04:14 > 0:04:18"Oh, no. It's worse than before," said Mrs Quest.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21"Now it covers the whole of the kitchen window."

0:04:21 > 0:04:24"Never mind," said Mr Quest. "I have an idea."

0:04:24 > 0:04:28For the rest of the day, he worked at the back of the rock.

0:04:28 > 0:04:32When he had finished, he had painted a picture on the rock.

0:04:33 > 0:04:36"Now at least the kitchen has a view," he said.

0:04:36 > 0:04:39Mr Quest was pleased.

0:04:39 > 0:04:42"And the hissing has stopped," she said.

0:04:42 > 0:04:47Now that the air couldn't escape, the house started to rise again.

0:04:47 > 0:04:51Day and night, the valley gradually disappeared.

0:04:51 > 0:04:53The house continued to rise,

0:04:53 > 0:04:57until finally the hill was back in its old place.

0:04:58 > 0:05:01Once again, the visitors began to trek up

0:05:01 > 0:05:04the only hill in that part of the country.

0:05:04 > 0:05:06"You are lucky," they said to Mrs Quest.

0:05:06 > 0:05:10"It's a perfect place to live with such wonderful views."

0:05:10 > 0:05:12"Perfect," agreed Mrs Quest.

0:05:12 > 0:05:16"And my favourite view is the one from the kitchen window.

0:05:16 > 0:05:17"Come and see."

0:05:23 > 0:05:26That story was called The Hill And The Rock.

0:05:26 > 0:05:27I don't think Mr and Mrs Quest

0:05:27 > 0:05:31will be moving that rock ever again, do you?

0:05:31 > 0:05:34Now it's time for you to get ready for bed,

0:05:34 > 0:05:35say goodbye to your view

0:05:35 > 0:05:38and draw the curtains ready for a good night's sleep.

0:05:38 > 0:05:41I'll see you again soon. Night-night.
