0:00:06 > 0:00:08Hello. My name's Sam.

0:00:08 > 0:00:11I've come to read you a bedtime story.

0:00:11 > 0:00:14And tonight's is one of my favourites.

0:00:14 > 0:00:16It's a very old nonsense poem.

0:00:16 > 0:00:20It's called that because it's full of strange and silly things.

0:00:20 > 0:00:23It's called The Jumblies, and it's by Edward Lear.

0:00:23 > 0:00:26The pictures are by Sam McPhillips.

0:00:26 > 0:00:28Are you sitting comfortably?

0:00:28 > 0:00:30Then I'll begin.

0:00:31 > 0:00:34They went to sea in a sieve, they did,

0:00:34 > 0:00:36In a sieve they went to sea.

0:00:36 > 0:00:38In spite of all their friends could say,

0:00:38 > 0:00:41On a winter's morn, on a stormy day,

0:00:41 > 0:00:43In a sieve they went to sea!

0:00:43 > 0:00:45And when the sieve turned round and round,

0:00:45 > 0:00:48And every one cried, "You'll all be drowned!"

0:00:48 > 0:00:50They called aloud,

0:00:50 > 0:00:53"Our sieve ain't big, but we don't care a button!

0:00:53 > 0:00:56"We don't care a fig! In a sieve we'll go to sea!'"

0:00:56 > 0:00:59Far and few, far and few,

0:00:59 > 0:01:02Are the lands where the Jumblies live.

0:01:02 > 0:01:05Their heads are green, and their hands are blue,

0:01:05 > 0:01:09And they went to sea in a sieve.

0:01:09 > 0:01:11They sailed away in a sieve, they did,

0:01:11 > 0:01:14In a sieve they sailed so fast,

0:01:14 > 0:01:16With only a beautiful pea-green veil

0:01:16 > 0:01:18Tied with a riband by way of a sail,

0:01:18 > 0:01:21To a small tobacco-pipe mast.

0:01:23 > 0:01:25And every one said, who saw them go,

0:01:25 > 0:01:28"Oh, won't they be soon upset, you know!

0:01:28 > 0:01:30"For the sky is dark, and the voyage is long,

0:01:30 > 0:01:33"And happen what may, it's extremely wrong,"

0:01:33 > 0:01:35In a sieve to sail so fast!'

0:01:35 > 0:01:37Far and few, far and few,

0:01:37 > 0:01:40Are the lands where the Jumblies live.

0:01:40 > 0:01:43Their heads are green, and their hands are blue,

0:01:43 > 0:01:46And they went to sea in a sieve.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49The water it soon came in, it did,

0:01:49 > 0:01:51The water it soon came in.

0:01:51 > 0:01:53So to keep them dry, they wrapped their feet

0:01:53 > 0:01:56In a pinky paper all folded neat,

0:01:56 > 0:01:59And they fastened it down with a pin.

0:01:59 > 0:02:02And they passed the night in a crockery-jar,

0:02:02 > 0:02:04And each of them said, "How wise we are!

0:02:04 > 0:02:07"Though the sky be dark, and the voyage be long,

0:02:07 > 0:02:10"Yet we never can think we were rash or wrong,

0:02:10 > 0:02:12"While round in our sieve we spin!"

0:02:12 > 0:02:15Far and few, far and few,

0:02:15 > 0:02:17Are the lands where the Jumblies live.

0:02:17 > 0:02:20Their heads are green, and their hands are blue,

0:02:20 > 0:02:23And they went to sea in a sieve.

0:02:23 > 0:02:26And all night long they sailed away,

0:02:26 > 0:02:28And when the sun went down,

0:02:28 > 0:02:30They whistled and warbled a moony song

0:02:30 > 0:02:33To the echoing sound of a coppery gong,

0:02:33 > 0:02:36In the shade of the mountains brown.

0:02:37 > 0:02:40"O Timballo! How happy we are,

0:02:40 > 0:02:43"When we live in a sieve and a crockery-jar,

0:02:43 > 0:02:46"And all night long in the moonlight pale,

0:02:46 > 0:02:49"We sail away with a pea-green sail,

0:02:49 > 0:02:52"In the shade of the mountains brown!"

0:02:52 > 0:02:54Far and few, far and few,

0:02:54 > 0:02:57Are the lands where the Jumblies live.

0:02:57 > 0:03:00Their heads are green, and their hands are blue,

0:03:00 > 0:03:03And they went to sea in a sieve.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06They sailed to the Western Sea, they did,

0:03:06 > 0:03:08To a land all covered with trees,

0:03:08 > 0:03:10And they bought an owl, and a useful cart,

0:03:10 > 0:03:13And a pound of rice, and a cranberry tart,

0:03:13 > 0:03:15And a hive of silvery bees.

0:03:15 > 0:03:19And they bought a pig, and some green jack-daws,

0:03:19 > 0:03:21And a lovely monkey with lollipop paws,

0:03:21 > 0:03:23And 40 bottles of Ring-Bo-Ree,

0:03:23 > 0:03:26And no end of Stilton cheese.

0:03:27 > 0:03:30Far and few, far and few,

0:03:30 > 0:03:33Are the lands where the Jumblies live.

0:03:33 > 0:03:36Their heads are green, and their hands are blue,

0:03:36 > 0:03:39And they went to sea in a sieve.

0:03:39 > 0:03:42And in 20 years they all came back,

0:03:42 > 0:03:44In 20 years or more,

0:03:44 > 0:03:47And every one said, "How tall they've grown!

0:03:47 > 0:03:50"For they've been to the lakes, and the Torrible Zone,

0:03:50 > 0:03:53"And the hills of the Chankly Bore."

0:03:53 > 0:03:56And they drank their health, and gave them a feast

0:03:56 > 0:03:59Of dumplings made of beautiful yeast.

0:03:59 > 0:04:01And everyone said, "If we only live,

0:04:01 > 0:04:04"We too will go to sea in a sieve,

0:04:04 > 0:04:07"To the hills of the Chankly Bore!"

0:04:07 > 0:04:11Far and few, far and few,

0:04:11 > 0:04:14Are the lands where the Jumblies live.

0:04:14 > 0:04:18Their heads are green, and their hands are blue,
