0:00:02 > 0:00:05CBeebies Bedtime Story!
0:00:07 > 0:00:10Hello, my name's Esther.
0:00:10 > 0:00:14And I'm wondering if you're ready for a bedtime story?
0:00:14 > 0:00:17You are? Oh, good.
0:00:17 > 0:00:21Tonight's story is called "Grandad's Island,"
0:00:21 > 0:00:23and it's by Benji Davies.
0:00:25 > 0:00:28At the bottom of Syd's garden, through the gate,
0:00:28 > 0:00:30and past the tree,
0:00:30 > 0:00:32was Grandad's house.
0:00:32 > 0:00:35There was a key under a flowerpot.
0:00:35 > 0:00:40And Syd could let himself in any time that he liked.
0:00:40 > 0:00:43One day, Syd called round to see Grandad.
0:00:43 > 0:00:46But he wasn't in any of the usual places.
0:00:46 > 0:00:51Then, just as he was about to leave, Syd heard Grandad calling.
0:00:53 > 0:00:56"Ah, there you are," said Grandad.
0:00:56 > 0:00:59"There's something I want you to see."
0:01:00 > 0:01:03Syd carefully climbed up the ladder.
0:01:03 > 0:01:06He'd never been in Grandad's attic before.
0:01:06 > 0:01:08It was full of old boxes
0:01:08 > 0:01:12and things that Grandad had collected from around the world.
0:01:12 > 0:01:15At the far end of the attic,
0:01:15 > 0:01:21Grandad pulled a sheet down from the wall to reveal a big, metal door.
0:01:21 > 0:01:25"After you, Syd," he said.
0:01:25 > 0:01:28Syd turned the handle.
0:01:28 > 0:01:29Clunk!
0:01:29 > 0:01:33And give the heavy door a push.
0:01:33 > 0:01:34FOGHORN SOUNDS
0:01:34 > 0:01:39Syd found himself standing on the deck of a very tall ship.
0:01:39 > 0:01:43There was an ocean of rooftops all around.
0:01:43 > 0:01:44SEAGULLS SQUAWK
0:01:44 > 0:01:47Grandad pulled a handle.
0:01:47 > 0:01:50"BOOP!" went the horn.
0:01:50 > 0:01:53And the ship lurched forward.
0:01:54 > 0:01:58"Steady as she goes," Grandad boomed.
0:01:58 > 0:02:01Grandad was very good at steering the ship.
0:02:01 > 0:02:06And kept them on a smooth course across the rolling waves.
0:02:06 > 0:02:11Mile after mile, all they saw was sea and sky.
0:02:11 > 0:02:14Sky and sea.
0:02:14 > 0:02:17Until, at last, something
0:02:17 > 0:02:20appeared on the horizon.
0:02:20 > 0:02:25"Land ahoy!" shouted Syd.
0:02:25 > 0:02:29They dropped the ships anchor and made their way to the shore.
0:02:29 > 0:02:34"Grandad, don't you want your stick?" Syd asked.
0:02:34 > 0:02:39"No, I think I'll be all right," said Grandad.
0:02:39 > 0:02:44In the thick jungle of the island, it was very hot.
0:02:45 > 0:02:50"We must find a good spot for a shelter," said Grandad.
0:02:50 > 0:02:54At the top of the island where a cool breeze blew through
0:02:54 > 0:02:58the trees they found an old shack.
0:02:58 > 0:03:00There was a lot to do.
0:03:00 > 0:03:04But with a little help they soon had everything shipshape.
0:03:04 > 0:03:08They explored the island high and low.
0:03:08 > 0:03:13At every turn they saw new wonders.
0:03:13 > 0:03:16It was the most perfect place.
0:03:16 > 0:03:19Syd wished they could stay forever.
0:03:20 > 0:03:24But he knew that it would soon be time for them to leave.
0:03:24 > 0:03:28"Syd, there is something I've been meaning to tell you.
0:03:28 > 0:03:31"You see, I'm thinking of staying."
0:03:31 > 0:03:36"Oh," said Syd. "But won't you be lonely?"
0:03:36 > 0:03:43"No, I don't think I will," said Grandad, smiling.
0:03:45 > 0:03:50Before he set sail, Syd hugged Grandad one last time.
0:03:50 > 0:03:52He would miss him very much.
0:03:54 > 0:03:57Everyone came to wave goodbye.
0:03:59 > 0:04:03Across the waves, the ship chugged and churned.
0:04:03 > 0:04:06The journey seemed much longer without Grandad.
0:04:06 > 0:04:10But Syd steered the ship safely home.
0:04:10 > 0:04:14The next morning, Syd went back round to Grandad's house.
0:04:14 > 0:04:18It was just the same as it had always been except Grandad
0:04:18 > 0:04:23wasn't there any more. In the attic, it was very quiet.
0:04:24 > 0:04:27The big, metal door wasn't there.
0:04:27 > 0:04:30It was as if it had never been there at all.
0:04:30 > 0:04:34Then, Syd heard something tapping at the window
0:04:34 > 0:04:35TAP TAP TAP
0:04:35 > 0:04:37he wondered what it might be.
0:04:40 > 0:04:44There, on the window ledge was an envelope.
0:04:44 > 0:04:47Syd carefully prised it open.
0:04:48 > 0:04:51"For Syd,"
0:04:56 > 0:05:01I think Syd's Grandad is enjoying his new adventure, don't you?
0:05:01 > 0:05:06And if you have a grandad or grandma why don't you give them
0:05:06 > 0:05:10an extra big hug the next time you see them? Hmm?
0:05:11 > 0:05:16Time now to close our eyes, and dream of adventures.
0:05:16 > 0:05:19Just like Syd's.
0:05:22 > 0:05:24Goodnight.
0:05:26 > 0:05:27SNORE
