0:00:03 > 0:00:06CBeebies Bedtime Story!
0:00:07 > 0:00:11Right, I wonder if there's anything down here.
0:00:11 > 0:00:13METAL DETECTOR CRACKLES AND BEEPS
0:00:13 > 0:00:16No. Nothing here.
0:00:16 > 0:00:20I wonder... Oh! Hello. I'm Mackenzie.
0:00:20 > 0:00:22I'm searching for something,
0:00:22 > 0:00:26something precious and made of metal - treasure.
0:00:26 > 0:00:28You ever found treasure?
0:00:28 > 0:00:32The girl in tonight's Bedtime Story thinks she's found some,
0:00:32 > 0:00:34and she's really excited about it.
0:00:34 > 0:00:39The story is by Sarah McConnell and is called Don't Mention Pirates.
0:00:39 > 0:00:43Scarlet Silver had a secret that nobody could guess.
0:00:43 > 0:00:46Not her mum, not her dad, not her brother Cedric,
0:00:46 > 0:00:48not even Grandpa Jack.
0:00:48 > 0:00:51The Silvers were a very ordinary family...
0:00:51 > 0:00:54except that they lived in a ship-shaped house.
0:00:54 > 0:00:56Yes, really ship-shaped.
0:00:56 > 0:01:00Scarlet's mum inherited it from her famous pirate grandma,
0:01:00 > 0:01:03Long Joan Silver.
0:01:03 > 0:01:07There was one rule in the Silver house, and only one rule -
0:01:07 > 0:01:11"Don't mention pirates," on account of the terrible luck
0:01:11 > 0:01:15that befell Grandma Silver, when she was accidentally eaten
0:01:15 > 0:01:20by a giant shrimp. From that day onwards, "no pirates" was the rule.
0:01:20 > 0:01:22But that wasn't easy for Scarlet,
0:01:22 > 0:01:25because she secretly wanted to be a pirate.
0:01:25 > 0:01:27Scarlet loved the sea air,
0:01:27 > 0:01:30and was excellent at making people walk the plank.
0:01:30 > 0:01:34She taught Bluebeard, her budgie, to squawk, "Pieces of eight."
0:01:34 > 0:01:36But Mum and Dad weren't proud.
0:01:36 > 0:01:39"Don't mention pirates," they said, very loud.
0:01:39 > 0:01:44The things that all pirates - including Scarlet - loved best,
0:01:44 > 0:01:46was searching for treasure.
0:01:46 > 0:01:49So, Mr Silver built Scarlet a treasure detector.
0:01:49 > 0:01:54She found odds and ends and bits and bobs, but nothing exciting.
0:01:54 > 0:01:58Then one Tuesday - beep, beep, beep - the detector went off.
0:01:58 > 0:02:01"Bless my barnacles," said Scarlet.
0:02:01 > 0:02:05"I've found gold!" She ran into the house to tell the others.
0:02:05 > 0:02:09"Can't be real gold," said Dad Silver. "Yes, it can," said Mum.
0:02:09 > 0:02:13"Eureka!" shouted Cedric. "Fetch Grandpa," said Scarlet.
0:02:13 > 0:02:17She was so excited, she forgot he was fishing with One-eyed Scott.
0:02:17 > 0:02:21They all jumped up and looked for something to dig up the gold.
0:02:21 > 0:02:23They began to dig. The sun beat down,
0:02:23 > 0:02:26so they tied handkerchiefs around their heads.
0:02:26 > 0:02:30"Hmm, just what pirates wear," thought Scarlet.
0:02:30 > 0:02:33At six o'clock, they had a break.
0:02:33 > 0:02:36Ship-shaped biscuits on a ship-shaped plate.
0:02:36 > 0:02:39"Ah-ha, just what pirates eat," thought Scarlet.
0:02:39 > 0:02:42They carried on digging till the sun went down.
0:02:42 > 0:02:45"Bedtime," said Scarlet, yawning.
0:02:45 > 0:02:48"Not till we find the loot," said Cedric.
0:02:48 > 0:02:51"Ha, ha! Just how pirates speak," thought Scarlet.
0:02:51 > 0:02:55She left them to it. Next morning, Scarlet got a shock.
0:02:55 > 0:02:58"Why are you wearing eye patches?" she demanded.
0:02:58 > 0:03:01"We were having a mud fight," replied Mum.
0:03:01 > 0:03:04"Aye, and these make perfect eye protectors," added Dad.
0:03:04 > 0:03:06But Scarlet wasn't fooled.
0:03:06 > 0:03:12"You look just like..." "Don't mention pirates," the others roared.
0:03:12 > 0:03:15The Silvers dug and dug until they could dig no more.
0:03:15 > 0:03:19"There must be more gold," said Dad. "Aye," agreed Mum.
0:03:19 > 0:03:23"It'll be there," said Cedric, pointing to below the house.
0:03:23 > 0:03:27"Wait," said Scarlet. They didn't listen. Dad got his spade.
0:03:27 > 0:03:30"Knock it off, you landlubbers," shouted Scarlet.
0:03:30 > 0:03:32"The house will fall down."
0:03:32 > 0:03:36"Suffering seagulls," said Mum, Dad and Cedric, "She's right!"
0:03:36 > 0:03:38They staggered inside to the couch.
0:03:38 > 0:03:41"Well, we've still got the nuggets," said Scarlet.
0:03:41 > 0:03:45The back door flew open. "Ahoy!" said Grandpa Jack,
0:03:45 > 0:03:47"I'm back! What's that you've got there?"
0:03:47 > 0:03:51"You champions," he said, "You found me gold tooth!"
0:03:51 > 0:03:53He popped it back into his mouth.
0:03:53 > 0:03:58Before anyone said a word, Grandpa said, "What's happened this week?
0:03:58 > 0:04:00"You look just like a bunch of pi..."
0:04:00 > 0:04:04Suddenly there was a creak, then a crack, then a splush!
0:04:04 > 0:04:07"Pirates! That's what we are," said the Silvers.
0:04:07 > 0:04:10And as soon as they said it, they knew it was true.
0:04:10 > 0:04:13"Hoist the mainsail," shouted Scarlet.
0:04:13 > 0:04:16And off they sailed in search of treasure,
0:04:16 > 0:04:18because that's what pirates do.
0:04:18 > 0:04:22And that story was called, Don't Mention Pirates.
0:04:22 > 0:04:25What? I've got something on my head?
0:04:25 > 0:04:30Well, that's because I'm just like Scarlet. I love finding treasure,
0:04:30 > 0:04:34and I want to be a pirate. It's time for you you go to bed,
0:04:34 > 0:04:38while I search for treasure. I'll see you soon for another story.
0:04:38 > 0:04:43Night-night, me hearties! I wonder if there's any treasure over here.
