0:24:04 > 0:24:06BLUES MUSIC PLAYS

0:24:06 > 0:24:09What's that? Hold on, I'll just turn down this music.

0:24:09 > 0:24:14Hello, I'm Michael. Sorry, I was just listening to some music.

0:24:14 > 0:24:18But it probably was a little bit loud, wasn't it? Hmm.

0:24:18 > 0:24:21Do you like music? I do! I like all sorts of music.

0:24:21 > 0:24:24There's a girl in tonight's story

0:24:24 > 0:24:28who discovers she likes music, but not just listening to it.

0:24:28 > 0:24:32The story is called Ruby Sings The Blues.

0:24:32 > 0:24:37Ruby was loud. Very loud.

0:24:37 > 0:24:44"Hi everybody, I'm home!" When she hollered down the street,

0:24:44 > 0:24:50the man on the top floor yelled, "Keep it down, loud mouth!

0:24:50 > 0:24:55"I'm trying to sleep!" The student on the middle floor shouted,

0:24:55 > 0:24:59"Hey, boom box! I can't hear myself think."

0:24:59 > 0:25:05The saxophonist and jazz singer in the basement looked at each other.

0:25:07 > 0:25:11"Awesome!" they said.

0:25:11 > 0:25:14At home, Ruby's parents tried to stay calm.

0:25:16 > 0:25:22"Ruby, dear," they said, "do you think you could be a bit quieter?"

0:25:22 > 0:25:25- HE SHOUTS - "Like this?"

0:25:25 > 0:25:30"Just a teensy bit down," said Ruby's father.

0:25:30 > 0:25:32"How's this, Pops?"

0:25:32 > 0:25:36"Lovely!" they said. "Now, do you think you can keep it like that?"

0:25:36 > 0:25:40"OK, I'll try, Mumsie."

0:25:40 > 0:25:48But in class, Ruby was loud, head-splittingly loud.

0:25:48 > 0:25:52"Hey, Miss Nightingale! May I answer that question?"

0:25:52 > 0:25:57At playtime, Miss Nightingale spoke gently to Ruby.

0:25:57 > 0:26:00"Let's pretend you're a sound blaster,"

0:26:00 > 0:26:07said Miss Nightingale, pointing to three buttons on Ruby's blouse.

0:26:07 > 0:26:12This button is your ON button. This one is your OFF button,

0:26:12 > 0:26:17and the one in the middle is your volume control.

0:26:17 > 0:26:22Miss Nightingale gave Ruby's middle button a twiddle.

0:26:22 > 0:26:25"Right, let's hear you, Ruby!" she said.

0:26:25 > 0:26:28"Am I on now, Miss?"

0:26:28 > 0:26:33"You're always on, Ruby, and always loud," said Miss Nightingale.

0:26:33 > 0:26:38"So why don't we turn down the volume a bit?"

0:26:38 > 0:26:41"Is this better, Miss?" "Much better, Ruby!"

0:26:41 > 0:26:44"Now go and play," said Miss Nightingale.

0:26:44 > 0:26:51Ruby ran outside, turned her volume control right up

0:26:51 > 0:26:54and blasted across the playground,

0:26:54 > 0:27:00"I'm a sound blaster!" The other children couldn't bear it.

0:27:00 > 0:27:02They turned round and shouted,

0:27:02 > 0:27:07"Switch it off, Ruby! You're hurting our ears!"

0:27:07 > 0:27:10No-one wanted to play with Ruby.

0:27:10 > 0:27:13She was just too loud to have around.

0:27:13 > 0:27:18Switched off and sad, Ruby walked home.

0:27:18 > 0:27:22No-one in the road, even knew she had come home.

0:27:22 > 0:27:28That whole day, Ruby kept quiet. Her mum wondered if she was ill.

0:27:28 > 0:27:32But Ruby wasn't ill - she had the blues.

0:27:32 > 0:27:37When the sax player and the jazz singer didn't hear Ruby upstairs,

0:27:37 > 0:27:42they knocked on the door and asked, "What's up, Ruby?"

0:27:42 > 0:27:47In a teensy voice, Ruby explained how nobody wanted to play with her

0:27:47 > 0:27:50because she was too loud.

0:27:50 > 0:27:57"We think your voice is awesome," said Bernard, the sax player.

0:27:57 > 0:28:02"Yes!" said Zelda, "I'd love to teach you how to use it.

0:28:02 > 0:28:07"Would you like to learn how to sing, Ruby?" asked her mother.

0:28:07 > 0:28:11"Awesome!" Ruby's mum smiled.

0:28:11 > 0:28:13There was nothing wrong with Ruby.

0:28:13 > 0:28:18Every day, after school, Ruby took singing lessons

0:28:18 > 0:28:20with Bernard and Zelda.

0:28:20 > 0:28:25She copied the musical notes made by Bernard on his saxophone.

0:28:27 > 0:28:32Zelda taught Ruby how to use her volume control

0:28:32 > 0:28:36so that she could sing sharp zooming notes,

0:28:36 > 0:28:38like the sounds of the city,

0:28:38 > 0:28:44and gentle breathy notes like a cool evening breeze.

0:28:44 > 0:28:50Most of all, she taught Ruby to sing with feeling.

0:28:50 > 0:28:54When the man on the top floor heard Ruby, he said,

0:28:54 > 0:28:57"What a beautiful voice!"

0:28:57 > 0:29:02The kids on the block came out and danced on the sidewalk,

0:29:02 > 0:29:08chanting, "Go, Ruby, go!" And Bernard looked at Zelda and said,

0:29:08 > 0:29:13"Listen, Ruby's singing the blues."

0:29:13 > 0:29:16And when Ruby sang at her school concert she was...

0:29:17 > 0:29:21..well, just awesome!

0:29:21 > 0:29:27But, once in a while, when the neighbours least expect it,

0:29:27 > 0:29:30she turns it right up.

0:29:30 > 0:29:35"Hi, everybody! I'm home!"

0:29:35 > 0:29:40Just to check that her volume control's still working.

0:29:40 > 0:29:46And that story was called Ruby Sings The Blues. Hmm.

0:29:46 > 0:29:51Now, I wonder if I can find some blues music on my radio.

0:29:51 > 0:29:55While I do, it's time for you to go to bed, and I'll see you soon

0:29:55 > 0:30:00for another story. Now maybe if I turn this on really loud...

0:30:00 > 0:30:02- BLUES MUSIC PLAYS - Hey, yeah!

0:30:02 > 0:30:05It's like the student says, "That's cool, man!"
