0:00:02 > 0:00:04Soon starlight will scatter through the dark
0:00:04 > 0:00:08so let's all look up at Stargazing Park.
0:00:10 > 0:00:13Hello, Stargazers.
0:00:13 > 0:00:17Now, last night, we tried to spot tiny dots of light in the sky.
0:00:17 > 0:00:21Satellites. Well, there's lots more in the night sky to spot,
0:00:21 > 0:00:25so let's all... Ready? ..look up.
0:00:34 > 0:00:35# When the night falls
0:00:35 > 0:00:40# Maggie helps us see wonders of the stars above us all
0:00:40 > 0:00:43# Turn the lights low Grab a cosy rug
0:00:43 > 0:00:45# Wrap up warm and snug
0:00:45 > 0:00:48# Here we go
0:00:48 > 0:00:51# We're going stargazing
0:00:51 > 0:00:54# Gaze at stars shining bright
0:00:54 > 0:00:57# We're going stargazing
0:00:57 > 0:01:01# Spot a zooming satellite
0:01:01 > 0:01:04# We're going stargazing
0:01:04 > 0:01:08# Glimpse the moon and the planets above
0:01:08 > 0:01:11# We're going stargazing
0:01:11 > 0:01:17# So just look up Look up, look up. #
0:01:28 > 0:01:31Come and join us underneath the stars.
0:01:34 > 0:01:37- Hi, Chris. Hi, Stargazers. - Hi, Maggie.
0:01:37 > 0:01:40- CHILDREN:- Hi, Maggie.
0:01:40 > 0:01:44Welcome to the Stargazing Park. Now, what can we see up there?
0:01:47 > 0:01:51- Stars.- Lots of stars.- What's the brightest thing we can see out there?
0:01:51 > 0:01:53- That one over there. - Yeah, I'd agree.
0:01:53 > 0:01:56That's the brightest star I can see.
0:01:56 > 0:02:00There's lots of things to see in the dark sky tonight,
0:02:00 > 0:02:04but now I want to show you something much brighter. Follow me. This way.
0:02:08 > 0:02:12Is that what you wanted us to see over there, Maggie? Look up there.
0:02:12 > 0:02:14Can you see that bright star?
0:02:14 > 0:02:17That's not a star. That's a planet.
0:02:17 > 0:02:21How about that? You can see a planet from here!
0:02:21 > 0:02:24Who else can see a planet in the night sky?
0:02:34 > 0:02:40- It's Mr Bloom!- Hey, hello! We're looking for a bright planet.
0:02:40 > 0:02:44- Now, can you remember what that bright planet was called?- Venus.
0:02:44 > 0:02:48Venus, that's right, cos earlier on Margaret took us on a tour.
0:02:48 > 0:02:54- Ahem, a MAGNIFICENT tour! - Oh, sorry, Margaret.
0:02:54 > 0:02:59Yes, it was a magnificent tour of the Solar System.
0:02:59 > 0:03:01So why don't you zoom by later and join us?
0:03:02 > 0:03:07The bright planet Venus. So is that what we can see, Maggie?
0:03:07 > 0:03:10Yes, that's Venus and it looks absolutely beautiful.
0:03:10 > 0:03:13Venus is about the same size as Earth,
0:03:13 > 0:03:15so it's almost like our sister planet.
0:03:15 > 0:03:19- What's it like ON Venus? - Ah, that's quite interesting,
0:03:19 > 0:03:23cos it looks beautiful from here but it's about 400 degrees C,
0:03:23 > 0:03:25so hotter than the oven we use at home.
0:03:25 > 0:03:30- So, like, four times hotter than an oven that you cook a pizza in?- Yep.
0:03:30 > 0:03:33- My goodness me, that IS hot! - Why is it so bright?
0:03:33 > 0:03:36Well, it's bright because... Hold on a second.
0:03:36 > 0:03:41- Maggie, why is it so bright?- I think this calls for an experiment.
0:03:41 > 0:03:45- Let's go to the Stargazing Cafe. - Oh, yes!- This way.- Good, good!
0:03:48 > 0:03:52So we're going to try and find out why the planet Venus is so bright.
0:03:52 > 0:03:56To do that, I think the best way is to compare two different planets,
0:03:56 > 0:04:00- so does anyone know what Mars looks like? Tabitha.- It's red.
0:04:00 > 0:04:03That's right. Red and dusty.
0:04:03 > 0:04:08So this is Mars in a jar.
0:04:08 > 0:04:11And you can see below we've got red rocks.
0:04:11 > 0:04:14Up above we haven't got very much at all really.
0:04:14 > 0:04:18Now, we want to compare that with the planet Venus.
0:04:18 > 0:04:21It is quite grey, but up above it's quite cloudy.
0:04:21 > 0:04:23It's got quite a thick atmosphere.
0:04:23 > 0:04:26This is Venus in the jar.
0:04:27 > 0:04:29And above the rocks of Venus,
0:04:29 > 0:04:35there is lots of clouds and that's a nice thick atmosphere.
0:04:35 > 0:04:39Chris, if you could dim the lights, you can see something quite amazing.
0:04:40 > 0:04:43Let's take Mars first of all.
0:04:43 > 0:04:46Pretend this is the Sun, nice and bright.
0:04:46 > 0:04:49If I shine the light through Mars, you can see a little bit,
0:04:49 > 0:04:51but you don't see that much.
0:04:51 > 0:04:54What do you think's going to happen with Venus?
0:04:54 > 0:04:59It's going to light up the atmosphere and light up Venus more.
0:04:59 > 0:05:00Let's see.
0:05:01 > 0:05:04- Does that look brighter? ALL:- Yes.
0:05:04 > 0:05:07I think it does too. It looks brighter than Mars.
0:05:07 > 0:05:08That's why Venus is so bright.
0:05:08 > 0:05:11It's got all that atmosphere and cloud above it,
0:05:11 > 0:05:13and it makes it really bright.
0:05:13 > 0:05:18So the thick cloud, the atmosphere surrounding Venus,
0:05:18 > 0:05:21being lit by the Sun is what makes it look so bright?
0:05:21 > 0:05:23- That's right, Chris. - Thank you, Maggie.
0:05:23 > 0:05:28Come on, let's see if we can spot the bright planet Venus.
0:05:31 > 0:05:36Let's see if we can spot bright Venus through the window.
0:05:46 > 0:05:49I'm looking through my window for a different planet.
0:05:49 > 0:05:51It's called Saturn.
0:05:51 > 0:05:55It's a big ball of gas with lots of rings around it.
0:05:55 > 0:05:58Now, Saturn is far, far away from planet Earth
0:05:58 > 0:06:02but a spacecraft called Cassini took some beautiful pictures of it.
0:06:02 > 0:06:04Take a look.
0:06:04 > 0:06:07The rings around Saturn are made up of ice and rock
0:06:07 > 0:06:11spinning very, very fast around the planet.
0:06:11 > 0:06:14And if you look really carefully you can see a tiny dot.
0:06:14 > 0:06:18It looks like a star but it's actually our own planet Earth,
0:06:18 > 0:06:20far, far away from Saturn.
0:06:23 > 0:06:29Whoa, how tiny does planet Earth look from Saturn?
0:06:29 > 0:06:32The Solar System is an enormous place.
0:06:32 > 0:06:37Let's find out more about it from Margaret, the cabbage, and Mr Bloom.
0:06:39 > 0:06:41Zoom!
0:06:41 > 0:06:44Ahem, welcome to the first stop
0:06:44 > 0:06:48on Margaret's magnificent tour of the Solar System.
0:06:48 > 0:06:52Margaret, we can't keep up with you when you're in your Veggie Voyager.
0:06:52 > 0:06:57- She's very quick, isn't she?- It is a rather speedy spaceship, isn't it?
0:06:57 > 0:07:01- Ooh, hey, look at this. What do you think this might be?- The Sun.
0:07:01 > 0:07:05The Sun, that's right, and look at it, it's enormous, isn't it?
0:07:05 > 0:07:09- Did you know that the Sun is actually a star?- Well, I never.
0:07:09 > 0:07:12You do know a lot about space, don't you, Margaret?
0:07:12 > 0:07:17Oh, thank you, Mr Bloom. Do you know which planet is closest to the Sun?
0:07:17 > 0:07:21- Mercury.- Mercury, that's right! - Yes! And it's tiny.
0:07:21 > 0:07:26- Shall we see if we can find Mercury? - There.- Ah, there it is.
0:07:26 > 0:07:31- Look, it's so small.- It's next to my favourite planet, Venus.
0:07:31 > 0:07:34Venus is the brightest planet.
0:07:34 > 0:07:38Why don't we shine your torches at Venus and make it really bright?
0:07:38 > 0:07:42Making Venus the brightest planet in the Solar System.
0:07:42 > 0:07:47Ahem, next on the tour is a planet we know very well.
0:07:47 > 0:07:50- So it's blue and it's green. What planet is this?- Earth!
0:07:50 > 0:07:53- Earth, and who lives on Earth?- Us!
0:07:53 > 0:07:55Yeah, that's where we live.
0:07:55 > 0:07:59- Look, there's a red planet next door.- Mars!- You think that's Mars?
0:07:59 > 0:08:05That's right. Now this looks to be rather a large planet.
0:08:05 > 0:08:10- Do you know what the largest planet is in the Solar System?- Jupiter.
0:08:10 > 0:08:12Jupiter, yeah. Where does it need to go?
0:08:12 > 0:08:15- Well, it needs to go all the way over there.- Over there?
0:08:15 > 0:08:19- Right, what, over here?- No, further. - Further? What, over here?
0:08:19 > 0:08:22- No, no, no, further.- My, oh, my.
0:08:22 > 0:08:28- It needs to go all the way right over there.- Over there?- Yes. Let's zoom.
0:08:28 > 0:08:30ZOOM!
0:08:36 > 0:08:39This is the perfect place for hanging a giant Jupiter,
0:08:39 > 0:08:41- what do you reckon? - BOTH:- Yes!
0:08:41 > 0:08:46Yeah. All right, let's get it out the bag. You hold that. Here we go.
0:08:48 > 0:08:49Whoo-hoo-hoo!
0:08:49 > 0:08:53There's one giant bird feeder for the birds.
0:08:53 > 0:08:58Oh, next stop Saturn. Let's ZOOOOM!
0:08:58 > 0:09:01Right then. Come on, Stargazers. After her!
0:09:04 > 0:09:07- Hi, Margaret.- Hello!
0:09:07 > 0:09:09Hey, Stargazers, look.
0:09:09 > 0:09:14- We're a long way from the Sun now, aren't we?- Right by Saturn.
0:09:14 > 0:09:18- What has Saturn got that Margaret's forgotten?- BOTH:- The rings!
0:09:18 > 0:09:23- Yeah, that's right. What have I got in my bag?- Stones.- Some stones.
0:09:23 > 0:09:28So do you reckon we could use these stones to make rings around Saturn?
0:09:28 > 0:09:29- BOTH:- Yes!
0:09:29 > 0:09:32Saturn's rings are made by lots of rocks spinning round it
0:09:32 > 0:09:36really, really, really, really fast.
0:09:36 > 0:09:38Let's ZOOOOOM!
0:09:42 > 0:09:45- Found you, Margaret.- Ah, now that is one tired out cabbage.
0:09:45 > 0:09:48- Look, she's having a little rest. - Boo!
0:09:48 > 0:09:54I'm not having a rest, I'm being Uranus, the planet on its side.
0:09:54 > 0:09:57Let's zoom. ZOOOOOM!
0:09:59 > 0:10:05- Oh, here we are.- Yes, we've made it to the edge of the Solar System.
0:10:07 > 0:10:09Oh no, where's Neptune?
0:10:09 > 0:10:12Neptune, I've got Neptune.
0:10:12 > 0:10:15Here it is. Ta-dah!
0:10:15 > 0:10:17WIND BLOWS
0:10:17 > 0:10:19Whoa!
0:10:19 > 0:10:24Sorry, Mr Bloom, I forgot to mention it's very windy on Neptune.
0:10:24 > 0:10:29- Oh, Mr Bloom.- So, go on, let's put Neptune in here.
0:10:29 > 0:10:33- Who would like to go back to Earth? - Me!- Me!- Me, me, me, me!
0:10:33 > 0:10:38- All right, well we'll see you back there, Margaret, OK?- OK. Let's zoom.
0:10:38 > 0:10:40Oh, oh no!
0:10:40 > 0:10:44- My Veggie Voyager is all out of zoom.- Oh, no.
0:10:44 > 0:10:49Well, don't you worry, my little gem, cos I've got a plan. Come on.
0:10:49 > 0:10:51Follow me, Stargazers.
0:10:55 > 0:10:59And here we are. We're just in time for the Stargazer Shuttle.
0:10:59 > 0:11:03This is going to get us home in now time so, come on, let's get aboard.
0:11:03 > 0:11:05Next stop, Earth!
0:11:07 > 0:11:12That was a magnificent tour of the Solar System, Margaret.
0:11:12 > 0:11:14There are so many things out there.
0:11:14 > 0:11:19Rocky planets, gassy planets and billions of stars.
0:11:19 > 0:11:23Come on, let's join the Stargazers for another Starlight Story.
0:11:29 > 0:11:33# Starlight scattered through the dark
0:11:36 > 0:11:40# Painting stories for us all
0:11:44 > 0:11:48# Gather underneath the stars
0:11:50 > 0:11:55# And hear their wonders told
0:11:57 > 0:12:00# Looking up into the dark
0:12:00 > 0:12:03# The night is yours and it is mine
0:12:03 > 0:12:07# Looking up into the dark
0:12:07 > 0:12:11# The dark upon us all
0:12:11 > 0:12:15# Upon us all the stars will shine
0:12:15 > 0:12:16# Upon us all the stars
0:12:19 > 0:12:22# Will shine. #
0:12:24 > 0:12:26Look up there!
0:12:28 > 0:12:31Cassiopeia, the Queen.
0:12:31 > 0:12:36Cassiopeia, the Queen, wished for a jewel in her crown.
0:12:36 > 0:12:42A golden crown would just not do without a jewel inside it too.
0:12:42 > 0:12:46She called in the planets, one by one.
0:12:46 > 0:12:48Surely one would be her jewel?
0:12:48 > 0:12:51# A jewel so shiny Fine and bright
0:12:51 > 0:12:54# To make her crown look cool. #
0:12:54 > 0:13:00She tried the planet Mercury, the tiny one nearest the Sun. Whoops!
0:13:00 > 0:13:05She tried the gas giant, Jupiter, too big to the be the one.
0:13:07 > 0:13:13The last she tried was Venus, gleaming bright, the Evening Star.
0:13:14 > 0:13:18A jewel in her crown, the perfect fit.
0:13:18 > 0:13:21The brightest planet by far.
0:13:24 > 0:13:26Well, that was the story of Cassiopeia.
0:13:26 > 0:13:30Now, if you'd like to see some more stars, you can print these
0:13:30 > 0:13:34star maps off the CBeebies website and do more stargazing.
0:13:34 > 0:13:39We'll be doing more stargazing here tomorrow. We'll see you then.
