0:02:35 > 0:02:38the wash of shame, ha-ha-ha!

0:02:38 > 0:02:41It's all to play for, but before the competition can get under way,

0:02:41 > 0:02:43we'd better teach the kids to drive.

0:02:43 > 0:02:45Our rookies aren't allowed on public roads,

0:02:45 > 0:02:49but here at the academy, anything's possible.

0:02:49 > 0:02:50They've never driven before,

0:02:50 > 0:02:53so if they're going to help their parents become better drivers,

0:02:53 > 0:02:55they need to learn all the skills and techniques

0:02:55 > 0:02:57to be safe on the roads.

0:02:57 > 0:02:59And elite driving instructor Vicky Lovell,

0:02:59 > 0:03:03with over 25 years' experience, is one of the country's top tutors.

0:03:03 > 0:03:07They key difference between teaching children and adults to drive

0:03:07 > 0:03:11is adults only focus on passing the driving test

0:03:11 > 0:03:13and children actually want to be good at driving.

0:03:13 > 0:03:17Throughout the lesson, Vicky has a set of dual controls,

0:03:17 > 0:03:21so our rookies are in safe hands - well, feet, actually!

0:03:21 > 0:03:23Let's start with the basics.

0:03:23 > 0:03:26- So we're going to let the clutch up. - Yeah.- Oh!

0:03:26 > 0:03:29A little tiny bit at a time. Oh!

0:03:29 > 0:03:32A bumpy start for Tia, but she's off.

0:03:32 > 0:03:35And we're going to accelerate now.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37Aah!

0:03:37 > 0:03:39And brake gently to a stop, really gent...

0:03:39 > 0:03:42- Oh!- Sorry!

0:03:42 > 0:03:46So your first driving lesson. # Da-da-da! #

0:03:46 > 0:03:49- How was that?- Weird, really weird!

0:03:49 > 0:03:52Lucy's moving, nice one.

0:03:52 > 0:03:54Let's try a corner.

0:03:54 > 0:03:56So, quick steering to the right.

0:03:56 > 0:03:59- That's left.- Oops! - There's a building there.

0:03:59 > 0:04:02- Beep!- There you go, you're driving.

0:04:02 > 0:04:06- And...- Now can I go really fast? - Not yet, Tom!

0:04:06 > 0:04:08Drive at a speed that you'll be able to control the car.

0:04:10 > 0:04:13Making a car go forwards is hard enough,

0:04:13 > 0:04:17but today's superskills competition is designed to test reversing,

0:04:17 > 0:04:20so our rookies will need to quickly master the art

0:04:20 > 0:04:23of making a car go backwards. No pressure, then!

0:04:23 > 0:04:25To reverse safely, it's really important

0:04:25 > 0:04:28that everybody knows about all the blind spots

0:04:28 > 0:04:31and to reverse with lots and lots of control.

0:04:31 > 0:04:33Stop, stop, stop, stop, stop!

0:04:33 > 0:04:35Oh, I put the brakes on for you there.

0:04:35 > 0:04:38It looks like Lucy's got to work on her control.

0:04:40 > 0:04:41Steer towards... Oh, dear.

0:04:41 > 0:04:46Stop, stop, stop. We've gone very wrong, haven't we?

0:04:46 > 0:04:48Not much better from Tia.

0:04:48 > 0:04:50Now if you're ever wondering what a blind spot is,

0:04:50 > 0:04:54it's anywhere behind the car that you can't see in your mirrors.

0:04:54 > 0:04:57What can I hear? What can I hear?

0:04:57 > 0:05:02- Oh!- Like a white bollard in front of a solid concrete wall?

0:05:02 > 0:05:04This is impossible.

0:05:04 > 0:05:08- Oh, no, I've hit someone! - Or a cone.- Exactly!

0:05:08 > 0:05:12- Oh.- Oh-oh-oh!- Brake!

0:05:12 > 0:05:14Oh, I've really dented it.

0:05:14 > 0:05:17There's still a lot to learn, and our rookies are running out of time.

0:05:17 > 0:05:19Can they really get good enough

0:05:19 > 0:05:22to compete in the superskills reversing challenge?

0:05:25 > 0:05:29Before we let Brian, Nina and Todd loose on our superskills course,

0:05:29 > 0:05:31there's one lady who wants to find out

0:05:31 > 0:05:33if they've picked up any bad driving habits.

0:05:33 > 0:05:35I'm Sandra Dodson,

0:05:35 > 0:05:38Celebrity Driving Academy's chief driving examiner.

0:05:38 > 0:05:41With over 20 years' experience as an examiner,

0:05:41 > 0:05:45what Sandra doesn't know about driving techniques and road safety

0:05:45 > 0:05:46simply isn't worth knowing.

0:05:46 > 0:05:49She's designed a super-tricky test course

0:05:49 > 0:05:53to find out whether their driving is up to scratch.

0:05:53 > 0:05:55I'm looking for observation, control

0:05:55 > 0:05:57and good planning and scanning.

0:05:57 > 0:06:00I want hazard awareness, and I want to see knowledge,

0:06:00 > 0:06:02understanding and a good attitude.

0:06:02 > 0:06:03And they're off!

0:06:03 > 0:06:05MUSIC: "The Chain" by Fleetwood Mac

0:06:05 > 0:06:08# Bow, ba-ba-bow, ba-ba-ba-ba, bow... #

0:06:08 > 0:06:10This is weird.

0:06:10 > 0:06:13And here comes Todd Carty.

0:06:13 > 0:06:16He's moving down the straight there.

0:06:16 > 0:06:19I think we might have found ourselves a little boy racer!

0:06:22 > 0:06:25Oh, my goodness, he's almost chicaned that corner!

0:06:25 > 0:06:29Turbo Todd's into the arena - first it's the barrel run.

0:06:29 > 0:06:31These are a test of good steering control,

0:06:31 > 0:06:33but he's racing through them!

0:06:33 > 0:06:36Into the roundabout.. Oh, oh, watch out for the cyclist!

0:06:36 > 0:06:39I'm not going to make it! Oh, just, innit? Just!

0:06:39 > 0:06:42Good grief! Thanks goodness my crash-test dummy's out of the area!

0:06:42 > 0:06:45Meanwhile, Nina has passed the roundabout

0:06:45 > 0:06:47and is setting up to reverse the next bit of the course,

0:06:47 > 0:06:50which is testing awareness and concentration.

0:06:50 > 0:06:54- "Honk if you use your mirrors." - Yeah!- Great awareness!

0:06:54 > 0:06:57Now what about concentration when being distracted by dummies?

0:06:57 > 0:06:59Did I kill someone?!

0:06:59 > 0:07:02- They're definitely putting her off. - They are.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05They're knocking her off her stride, them water bombs.

0:07:05 > 0:07:07Oh!

0:07:07 > 0:07:09You've completely blown it for me now!

0:07:11 > 0:07:14How's Brian going to cope with the three-point turn?

0:07:14 > 0:07:16He hates reversing!

0:07:16 > 0:07:20Cor, it's a bit tight to do a three-point turn, here we go.

0:07:20 > 0:07:21I'm a bit tight here.

0:07:21 > 0:07:24It's going take a little bit more than I thought, this.

0:07:24 > 0:07:27Come on, Bri! It's meant to be a three-point turn!

0:07:27 > 0:07:31No, I ain't going to do that, I'm not going to do that.

0:07:31 > 0:07:34I'm going to have to start again! Oh, God!

0:07:34 > 0:07:37How am I going do a three-point turn in here?!

0:07:37 > 0:07:39So his three-point turn is just out of control, frankly.

0:07:41 > 0:07:44How's boy racer Todd Carty going to get on?

0:07:44 > 0:07:47He's reached the speed humps, I can't look.

0:07:51 > 0:07:54- Not at all, there he goes, look! - Oh, my goodness!

0:07:54 > 0:07:57Don't buy a second-hand car off this man.

0:07:57 > 0:08:00Meanwhile, Nina pulls off a great three-point turn.

0:08:00 > 0:08:03All she's just got to do is turn left and head for Sandra.

0:08:03 > 0:08:05Whoo-hoo!

0:08:05 > 0:08:08Hold up... Hold up, she's driving out of the course!

0:08:08 > 0:08:10# Don't stop me now

0:08:10 > 0:08:14# I'm having such a good time, I'm having a ball... #

0:08:14 > 0:08:15Where she's going?!

0:08:15 > 0:08:18Sorry! I need to zigzag back in.

0:08:18 > 0:08:20Oops!

0:08:20 > 0:08:23What a scatterbrain!

0:08:23 > 0:08:25You won't get away with it!

0:08:25 > 0:08:27Brian's onto the final test,

0:08:27 > 0:08:30and it's more reversing, but this time into a parking space.

0:08:30 > 0:08:34- Blimey, how tight is this? - Go on, Bri!

0:08:34 > 0:08:37Again, he could have done with looking behind him.

0:08:37 > 0:08:40You know, behind you!

0:08:40 > 0:08:42I would never do this, I'd get the wife to do it.

0:08:46 > 0:08:48- Oh, I've hit it, I've hit it! - He's hit a car.

0:08:48 > 0:08:51- Sorry! - He's made a total hash of that!

0:08:51 > 0:08:55So rubbish reverser Brian, scatty Nina and boy racer Todd

0:08:55 > 0:08:59definitely made an impression on our chief examiner.

0:08:59 > 0:09:03I think I'll have to think about this, I need a lie down!

0:09:03 > 0:09:06Still to come on today's Celebrity Driving Academy,

0:09:06 > 0:09:09a tasty slice of the Pieway Code quiz,

0:09:09 > 0:09:14Mr Crash lives up to his name, and who will take the wash of shame?

0:09:14 > 0:09:16It's now time for the superskills,

0:09:16 > 0:09:18and today's one is going to be particularly tricky.

0:09:18 > 0:09:20Our teams are going to have to be on the ball,

0:09:20 > 0:09:22quite literally on the ball,

0:09:22 > 0:09:25because we're playing indoor football - with cars!

0:09:25 > 0:09:28Come on, guys, that's it, in it goes!

0:09:31 > 0:09:34Dummies, what are you doing?! This way, come on!

0:09:40 > 0:09:42This is Penalty Boot-Out.

0:09:42 > 0:09:46Our drivers have to reverse through a series of defender dummies

0:09:46 > 0:09:50and score as many goals as possible using the boot of their car.

0:09:50 > 0:09:54The adults get three minutes, then the rookies get five.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57The team with the most goals wins, but beware -

0:09:57 > 0:10:01our chief examiner Sandra is keeping a beady eye on everybody.

0:10:01 > 0:10:03Her course is designed to teach them

0:10:03 > 0:10:06to reverse confidently and accurately.

0:10:06 > 0:10:08A text-book reverse is one that's controlled

0:10:08 > 0:10:12but has good all-round observation.

0:10:12 > 0:10:14But remember, she can disallow goals

0:10:14 > 0:10:17if she spots any dangerous or downright dumb driving.

0:10:23 > 0:10:26Right, first up we have Brian and Lucy with the Blue Team.

0:10:26 > 0:10:27Come on, you Blues!

0:10:27 > 0:10:29WHISTLE BLOWS

0:10:31 > 0:10:34Oh, this is tight, this one, isn't it? Oh, here we go.

0:10:34 > 0:10:38This is rubbish reverser Brian's worst nightmare.

0:10:38 > 0:10:41Well, I must say, Joe, yeah, he's quite sedately at the moment.

0:10:41 > 0:10:44I think you can see Lucy's helping him a bit.

0:10:44 > 0:10:47- Line up with the green.- Yeah. - Here he goes, look!

0:10:47 > 0:10:51- He can't go forward. - Oh, go on, Bri!

0:10:51 > 0:10:52CHEERING

0:10:52 > 0:10:54Yay! Goal!

0:10:55 > 0:10:58Yay, first on the score sheet!

0:10:59 > 0:11:03If you hit them, it's their fault.

0:11:03 > 0:11:06You're not in line, you're not allowed to go forward.

0:11:06 > 0:11:09Just do it, just do it, you've still got it.

0:11:09 > 0:11:12- Oh!- Oh, he's missed!

0:11:12 > 0:11:16- Didn't do it, didn't do it. - It's gone wide! Gutted!

0:11:16 > 0:11:20He's halfway through, he really needs to pick the pace up.

0:11:20 > 0:11:22Apparently, I'm being told we're halfway through,

0:11:22 > 0:11:26- so I've got to make this one count. - Wow, you're really good!

0:11:26 > 0:11:29Well, it would be good if we score a goal.

0:11:29 > 0:11:31At least someone's got faith in your reversing, Bri!

0:11:31 > 0:11:34- Stay in line!- He got a goal!

0:11:34 > 0:11:38- Yeah!- Back of the net, perfect ball control!

0:11:38 > 0:11:41Two goals for the Blues, great reversing.

0:11:41 > 0:11:45Just 30 seconds left, can Bri hold his nerve?

0:11:46 > 0:11:48Oh, he's given it too much, has he done it?

0:11:48 > 0:11:50Oh, he's overcooked it!

0:11:50 > 0:11:51Ten seconds left.

0:11:51 > 0:11:55I'm not going to do it, cos I'm not at the right angle.

0:11:55 > 0:11:59He's sliced it! A crucial miss. The ball's not in but he almost is.

0:11:59 > 0:12:01WHISTLE BLOWS

0:12:01 > 0:12:04I just thought, "Well, if the ball's not going to go in,

0:12:04 > 0:12:05"let's put something in the net,"

0:12:05 > 0:12:07so I just put my car in the back of the net.

0:12:07 > 0:12:10- I think you did really well. - Oh, thank you very much.

0:12:10 > 0:12:12That's half-time for the Blues.

0:12:12 > 0:12:15We got two! Let's go!

0:12:15 > 0:12:19It's a game of two halves, so Lucy's up next in the driving seat.

0:12:19 > 0:12:22All right, let's see how Lucy handles the course.

0:12:22 > 0:12:25And she's off, five minutes to go.

0:12:26 > 0:12:28The rookies can weave any route through the players,

0:12:28 > 0:12:31and this is a great start.

0:12:31 > 0:12:34- Oh!- What skill! Gosh, I'm impressed!

0:12:34 > 0:12:37Keep going straight, straight, straight, straight.

0:12:37 > 0:12:40Oh, she's knocked it wide, just like her dad.

0:12:40 > 0:12:42Oh, what a shame!

0:12:42 > 0:12:45Well done, though. Well done, good driving!

0:12:45 > 0:12:49Oh, that was really unlucky. Come on, Lucy.

0:12:49 > 0:12:53And just go back, just go back now and keep going back.

0:12:56 > 0:12:58You scored a goal! Brake, brake, brake.

0:12:58 > 0:12:59You scored a goal, well done.

0:13:00 > 0:13:04Yay, in off the post! That's three goals for the Blues,

0:13:04 > 0:13:07and Lucy's really showing her dad how to reverse.

0:13:07 > 0:13:09You're doing well, you might even score another one.

0:13:09 > 0:13:12# Scored a goa-oal Uh-uh, uh-uh-uh! #

0:13:15 > 0:13:19There's less than a minute to go, can she make it four for the Blues?

0:13:19 > 0:13:22My way, my way, go hard my way, keep it straight and...

0:13:22 > 0:13:25now your way, your way, your way...

0:13:25 > 0:13:27Oh!

0:13:27 > 0:13:30Oh! There goes our centre back!

0:13:30 > 0:13:32There'll be a red card for that.

0:13:32 > 0:13:36Well, I've heard of giving a dummy but not running one over!

0:13:36 > 0:13:39Oh, she's gone back for the same player!

0:13:39 > 0:13:42She's hit it again! And time's up.

0:13:42 > 0:13:45That dummy thinks it's all over - well, it is now!
