0:01:21 > 0:01:24- Why? - Well, the air that we breathe out

0:01:24 > 0:01:27is the air that plants like to breathe in.

0:02:21 > 0:02:25You have to put one seed in the hole in the earth.

0:02:25 > 0:02:27- Ooh!- And then cover it up.

0:02:27 > 0:02:31If you look after it properly, it will grow into a plant.

0:02:31 > 0:02:33Hmm!

0:02:33 > 0:02:38There are lots of different seeds and lots of different plants.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41Like cress seeds, that grow into cress.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46And pumpkin seeds that grow into pumpkins.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51And acorns that grow into...

0:02:51 > 0:02:53- Acorns!- No!

0:02:53 > 0:02:57Acorns grow into HUGE, TALL oak trees!

0:03:06 > 0:03:08Go on, plant it.

0:03:15 > 0:03:19into big leafs and curlies and big, huge flowers!

0:03:19 > 0:03:20Lola.

0:04:22 > 0:04:24That's nice, Charlie.

0:04:24 > 0:04:27But my seed won't grow.

0:04:27 > 0:04:31Mrs Finch told me that seeds only grow when they're happy

0:04:31 > 0:04:34and first of all, they need water.

0:04:34 > 0:04:35LOLA LAUGHS

0:04:37 > 0:04:39The rain helps the roots to grow.

0:04:39 > 0:04:42The water seeps deep into the ground.

0:04:43 > 0:04:47And then roots start to grow, to help the plant stand up.

0:04:47 > 0:04:48Like feet!

0:04:48 > 0:04:51They're all squiggly, Charlie.

0:04:51 > 0:04:53LOLA LAUGHS

0:04:53 > 0:04:56- ROOTS SLURP - What's that?- Slurping.

0:04:56 > 0:05:00Plants also use their roots for drinking, like straws.

0:05:00 > 0:05:03LOLA LAUGHS

0:05:10 > 0:05:13Lola, not too much water. Oh.

0:05:13 > 0:05:17Oh, dear. it won't grow if it gets too much water.

0:05:17 > 0:05:23- Oh.- Hmm.- Oops.- Maybe you should ask Mum for another seed.

0:05:23 > 0:05:24Hmm.

0:05:30 > 0:05:35- There.- Yes, that's good, just enough to wet the soil.

0:05:35 > 0:05:40- Anything else to make my plant happy, Charlie?- They love sunshine.

0:05:40 > 0:05:42Oh, they love the sunshine!

0:05:44 > 0:05:49They like to grow towards the warm and it makes their leaves come out.

0:05:51 > 0:05:55Look, the sunshine has made my plant grow a tiny weenie bit.

0:05:55 > 0:05:57- See?- Yes.

0:05:57 > 0:06:02Hmm. I will leave my plant in the sunshine.

0:06:04 > 0:06:06Charlie!

0:06:06 > 0:06:12- Oh, dear, Lola. Too much sun. - Oh, no, what am I going to do now?

0:06:12 > 0:06:15Ask Mum for another seed?

0:06:18 > 0:06:21Just enough sunshine for the leaves

0:06:21 > 0:06:24and just enough water for the squiggly roots.

0:06:24 > 0:06:26I'm sure it will grow this time.

0:06:26 > 0:06:31Look, here's the book Mrs Finch gave us about plants. You'll like it.

0:06:31 > 0:06:34Ooh!

0:06:34 > 0:06:39You see, the thing is, growing a seed is only just the beginning.

0:06:39 > 0:06:44- The seed grows into a plant and the plant grows into a...- Flower!

0:06:44 > 0:06:48Then bees come to eat from the plants.

0:06:49 > 0:06:53And as they eat, they get all this yellow stuff called pollen,

0:06:53 > 0:06:55all over their furry legs.

0:06:55 > 0:06:58And then they fly off to another plant.

0:06:59 > 0:07:04The pollen from the two flowers gets all mixed up

0:07:04 > 0:07:06and makes a new seed.

0:07:06 > 0:07:12- Wow!- And there are thousands and thousands of different seeds

0:07:12 > 0:07:14and lots of ways they can travel.

0:07:14 > 0:07:16Why do the seeds want to travel?

0:07:16 > 0:07:21So they can spread everywhere and lots of flowers, plants and trees

0:07:21 > 0:07:24can grow all over the place. Look.

0:07:24 > 0:07:27Some seeds get picked up by birds, or animals.

0:07:29 > 0:07:31Other seeds travel by the wind.

0:07:35 > 0:07:36Yay!

0:07:36 > 0:07:41And some seeds are so clever, they can fly all by themselves.

0:07:41 > 0:07:43Those seeds are spinning!

0:07:43 > 0:07:45LOLA LAUGHS

0:07:48 > 0:07:51These seeds grow into trees called sycamores.

0:07:51 > 0:07:56And when the seeds fall onto the ground, a new plant grows.

0:07:56 > 0:07:57Ooh!

0:07:57 > 0:08:03And you see, Lola, it goes round and round forever.

0:08:03 > 0:08:07- Seed, plant...- Flower!- That's right.

0:08:07 > 0:08:09Seed, plant, flower.

0:08:09 > 0:08:13Oh, I wonder what plant I'm growing.

0:08:13 > 0:08:17It might take a long time before you know and you have to keep checking...

0:08:17 > 0:08:20There's enough water and sunshine.

0:08:20 > 0:08:24I'm going to make sure that everything is just right.

0:08:31 > 0:08:32Ah.

0:08:35 > 0:08:36Ooh!

0:08:43 > 0:08:46It's doing really well, Lola.

0:08:46 > 0:08:49- I know. - What do you think it'll grow into?

0:08:49 > 0:08:51I think it will be...

0:08:51 > 0:08:56a pineapple, or maybe it will be one of those prickly plants,

0:08:56 > 0:09:01or maybe it will be one of those big, big, huge trees!

0:09:01 > 0:09:03Um...Lola?

0:09:03 > 0:09:07It might just be a normal plant, with leaves.

0:09:07 > 0:09:12Oh, no, Charlie. My plant is going to be an extremely special plant.

0:09:12 > 0:09:14LOLA HUMS HAPPILY

0:09:15 > 0:09:18Even if it is just a plant of leaves,

0:09:18 > 0:09:21maybe they will be in all different colours.

0:09:21 > 0:09:27- Or maybe it reach the ceiling.- It won't grow more if you don't sleep.

0:09:27 > 0:09:32And grow and grow and grow and grow...

0:09:33 > 0:09:35..high in the sky.

0:09:37 > 0:09:39LOLA LAUGHS

0:10:01 > 0:10:02Hmm.

0:10:05 > 0:10:07It's a flower, Charlie.

0:10:07 > 0:10:10Yes. It's a flower.

0:10:10 > 0:10:12It's a white flower.

0:10:14 > 0:10:17SHE SNIFFS

0:10:17 > 0:10:19And it has a smell.
