0:00:02 > 0:00:04# Want to ride your bike across the face of the moon?
0:00:04 > 0:00:06# Levitate your house with a bunch of balloons
0:00:06 > 0:00:08# Feel zero gravitation
0:00:08 > 0:00:09# A robot transformation
0:00:09 > 0:00:11# You're a cinemaniac
0:00:11 > 0:00:14# Do you love to hear the roar of an extinct dinosaur?
0:00:14 > 0:00:16# To explore the flora in your very own Pandora
0:00:16 > 0:00:17# And feel the urge to sing
0:00:17 > 0:00:19# Form a quest for the ring
0:00:19 > 0:00:20# To escape from the clone
0:00:20 > 0:00:22# Or to be home alone
0:00:22 > 0:00:24# Then roll out the red carpet
0:00:24 > 0:00:25# And turn down the lights
0:00:25 > 0:00:27# Grab yourself a seat and hold on tight
0:00:27 > 0:00:29# We're mad about movies
0:00:29 > 0:00:30# We're crazy for film
0:00:30 > 0:00:32# We're cinemaniacs
0:00:32 > 0:00:33# Cinemaniacs
0:00:33 > 0:00:36# Cinemaniacs. #
0:00:37 > 0:00:42Hello, everyone. I'm Oli White and this is Cinemaniacs!
0:00:42 > 0:00:44CineMinis!
0:00:44 > 0:00:46On today's show...
0:00:46 > 0:00:48Create a vortex in your own living room...
0:00:48 > 0:00:49How's that looking?
0:00:49 > 0:00:50It looks really cool.
0:00:50 > 0:00:52..compose a soundtrack for your day...
0:00:52 > 0:00:55It's going to be a happy-go-lucky kind of day today.
0:00:55 > 0:00:57..and be the star of your own movie.
0:00:57 > 0:01:00Just be yourself and keep it normal.
0:01:00 > 0:01:03- What do you think about that, Mr Efron?- Awesome.
0:01:03 > 0:01:04Definitely awesome.
0:01:04 > 0:01:08- It's kind of crazy and awesome.- OK.
0:01:08 > 0:01:12Well, moving on with the show, it's time for DIY Blockbuster.
0:01:15 > 0:01:16Action.
0:01:16 > 0:01:19We're giving groups of film-makers the chance to make a short film
0:01:19 > 0:01:24armed with just a camera, a script and some home-made props.
0:01:24 > 0:01:27But little do they know they're in for a big surprise...
0:01:27 > 0:01:30You didn't know I was coming?
0:01:30 > 0:01:34..when we give them something spectacular to turn their home movie
0:01:34 > 0:01:36into a DIY Blockbuster.
0:01:40 > 0:01:44Amariah, Joshua, Husnain, Nishant, Tashinga and Tyreik
0:01:44 > 0:01:47are making an action movie.
0:01:47 > 0:01:49Jet packs, parachutes.
0:01:49 > 0:01:52- Explosions.- But it's an action movie with a difference.
0:01:52 > 0:01:54It's a silent movie.
0:01:54 > 0:01:57It's the first time we've made a movie without words, so it's hard.
0:01:57 > 0:02:01It's about two twins robbing a jewellery store.
0:02:01 > 0:02:04So when they fly away in the jet packs,
0:02:04 > 0:02:06one of them lands in the prison yard,
0:02:06 > 0:02:08the other one lands on the ship.
0:02:08 > 0:02:11And they end up in the same prison cell.
0:02:11 > 0:02:12Action.
0:02:12 > 0:02:16Our team are shooting their movie on their modern-day camera-phones.
0:02:16 > 0:02:17Or so they think.
0:02:17 > 0:02:19What the team don't know is
0:02:19 > 0:02:22that they're in for a DIY Blockbuster surprise.
0:02:22 > 0:02:25Hello, I'm David Cleveland.
0:02:25 > 0:02:29We're taking them back in time with a mystery piece of kit.
0:02:30 > 0:02:32Standby. Action.
0:02:32 > 0:02:33The team have started filming
0:02:33 > 0:02:36and have no idea what's about to happen when David turns up.
0:02:42 > 0:02:45They're going to be making their film using this 100-year-old
0:02:45 > 0:02:49motion-picture camera, complete with five minutes' worth of film.
0:02:49 > 0:02:52Five minutes? Good luck with that, then.
0:02:52 > 0:02:56Cameras like this would have been used for the very first movies,
0:02:56 > 0:02:59and this rare historical piece of kit is just what the
0:02:59 > 0:03:02team need to get their film the silent movie look.
0:03:05 > 0:03:07When they first saw me walk out,
0:03:07 > 0:03:09I think they were dumbfounded.
0:03:09 > 0:03:12I thought he was a magician, to be honest.
0:03:12 > 0:03:15I thought he was going to pull out a rabbit or something.
0:03:15 > 0:03:19Unlike most cameras we use now, this camera uses film.
0:03:19 > 0:03:22When you turn the handle, the film goes through like that.
0:03:24 > 0:03:28It takes a picture and then moves the film down, takes another picture,
0:03:28 > 0:03:31moves the film down, takes another picture, moves the film down. See?
0:03:31 > 0:03:34And it takes more than just pressing a button to start recording.
0:03:34 > 0:03:36You've got to turn it twice every second.
0:03:36 > 0:03:39As you start rotating the handle,
0:03:39 > 0:03:42it starts to take 16 photos per second.
0:03:42 > 0:03:43You have to go smoothly.
0:03:43 > 0:03:45If it, sort of, goes in jerks,
0:03:45 > 0:03:48the picture will be speeded up or slowed down,
0:03:48 > 0:03:50and it will go dark or light.
0:03:50 > 0:03:51This sounds complicated.
0:03:51 > 0:03:54I wonder if our challenge... I mean, surprise...
0:03:54 > 0:03:57will really help our team.
0:03:57 > 0:04:00Now, if you disappear under the cloth.
0:04:00 > 0:04:02OK, can you see the hole?
0:04:02 > 0:04:05Even lining up the shot is much trickier with an old camera.
0:04:05 > 0:04:09When you have to look in to see where the camera's pointing,
0:04:09 > 0:04:10that's the difficult part.
0:04:10 > 0:04:12Can you wave that white thing a minute?
0:04:12 > 0:04:14When you look through the hole,
0:04:14 > 0:04:17it's like this little, tiny square thing.
0:04:17 > 0:04:19And it shows upside down.
0:04:19 > 0:04:20It was dark and black and upside down.
0:04:20 > 0:04:23It is very confusing. You've just got to get used to it.
0:04:23 > 0:04:25I like your confidence.
0:04:25 > 0:04:28With the shot lined up, they're ready for their first take.
0:04:28 > 0:04:31Silent. Stand by, action.
0:04:39 > 0:04:40Cut.
0:04:40 > 0:04:42Stand by.
0:04:49 > 0:04:53- Cut.- Happy?- No.
0:04:56 > 0:04:59Cut. Your mask came off.
0:04:59 > 0:05:01It went a bit wrong a couple of times.
0:05:01 > 0:05:04We need to get this right, there's film going through the camera
0:05:04 > 0:05:05and we've only got so much.
0:05:05 > 0:05:09It's not like a normal camera that's got lots of gigabytes in it
0:05:09 > 0:05:11and all that.
0:05:11 > 0:05:13If the team aren't careful,
0:05:13 > 0:05:16- they could run out of film before they finish their movie.- Cut.
0:05:16 > 0:05:19I can't get it on properly.
0:05:19 > 0:05:21Tashinga, he had difficulties putting his jet pack on.
0:05:21 > 0:05:24What we've got to do is to get all the rest of the scenes on that
0:05:24 > 0:05:26before that goes round.
0:05:26 > 0:05:29So we've got to make sure each shot works perfectly.
0:05:30 > 0:05:32The team rehearse to make sure
0:05:32 > 0:05:33everything's perfect
0:05:33 > 0:05:35before using up any more film.
0:05:36 > 0:05:39- Cut. Perfect.- Now you've got to do exactly the same again.
0:05:39 > 0:05:42- Are you going to record this time? - Yeah.
0:05:42 > 0:05:44- Definitely?- Yeah, definitely.
0:05:55 > 0:05:57Cut. It was all right.
0:05:57 > 0:06:00Although Husnain isn't completely happy,
0:06:00 > 0:06:03with so much film already used up, he settles for the take.
0:06:03 > 0:06:07We did that part about over seven times.
0:06:07 > 0:06:10- I think we better move on to the next scene.- OK.- OK?
0:06:10 > 0:06:11Silence.
0:06:11 > 0:06:13Stand by. Action.
0:06:15 > 0:06:16Cut.
0:06:16 > 0:06:20The wind was blowing too hard and the models are plastic, so
0:06:20 > 0:06:24when you throw them, it would get carried away by the wind, easily.
0:06:24 > 0:06:25OK.
0:06:28 > 0:06:31- See anything?- No.
0:06:31 > 0:06:33Uh-oh. That's more film wasted.
0:06:33 > 0:06:36The problem was, we didn't know where it was going to land.
0:06:36 > 0:06:39Now, it was very difficult to tell whether that worked.
0:06:39 > 0:06:40Do you think it worked?
0:06:40 > 0:06:42Parachute in shot. Just.
0:06:44 > 0:06:48With the trickiest scenes shot, the team are on a roll.
0:06:48 > 0:06:50Action.
0:06:50 > 0:06:53And they shoot their final scenes in the nick of time -
0:06:53 > 0:06:55just before the film runs out.
0:06:55 > 0:06:59Right, well, we call that the end. Or, "That's a wrap."
0:06:59 > 0:07:02- Sweet.- Thank you very much.
0:07:02 > 0:07:05But was it worth all that effort?
0:07:05 > 0:07:06I thought it was good.
0:07:06 > 0:07:09It was ambitious, but we got there in the end.
0:07:09 > 0:07:11I prefer the digital cameras.
0:07:11 > 0:07:13I can delete if I make mistakes.
0:07:14 > 0:07:18You can check out the team's finished movie on the CBBC website.
0:07:18 > 0:07:20CREEPY LAUGHTER
0:07:20 > 0:07:24Now, we decided to put two of our favourite writers to the
0:07:24 > 0:07:26Writer Roulette test.
0:07:26 > 0:07:30This is Laurence Rickard and this is Ben Willbond.
0:07:30 > 0:07:33They're the writers behind the Shakespeare movie, Bill.
0:07:33 > 0:07:36- You been before?- No, first time.
0:07:36 > 0:07:40Oh, it's nice. Don't steal anything.
0:07:40 > 0:07:43We're challenging Laurence and Ben to come up with a top
0:07:43 > 0:07:48movie plot based on four completely random story ingredients.
0:07:48 > 0:07:49It's time for...
0:07:51 > 0:07:53- And go.- Writer Roulette.
0:07:53 > 0:07:59OK, we're on a beach. It's a very, very rocky beach and...
0:07:59 > 0:08:03Hiding underneath one of the rocks on the beach is a spider. It's been
0:08:03 > 0:08:08contaminated in a nuclear accident and is growing at an incredible rate.
0:08:08 > 0:08:10It's now already the size of a man.
0:08:10 > 0:08:13It's tremendously hungry, but it can't find any bugs to eat,
0:08:13 > 0:08:15- so it's had to resort to... - Eating pineapples.
0:08:15 > 0:08:17And the only thing that will stop it growing
0:08:17 > 0:08:21much bigger and threatening the city that it
0:08:21 > 0:08:24lives next to is feeding it pineapples.
0:08:24 > 0:08:26But there's a pineapple shortage.
0:08:26 > 0:08:30So they have to invent a hydroponic pineapple growing solution
0:08:30 > 0:08:33which is powered by the greatest source of electricity known to man.
0:08:33 > 0:08:36- Which is?- BOTH: Lightning. - Of course.
0:08:36 > 0:08:39Nice one, guys.
0:08:39 > 0:08:43So this is where I give you guys three top tips for being on camera.
0:08:43 > 0:08:45You've got to be relaxed.
0:08:45 > 0:08:47Just be really calm and act like you're speaking to a friend.
0:08:47 > 0:08:50No-one wants to see you being really nervous.
0:08:55 > 0:08:58Keep it simple, because people just want to see you.
0:08:58 > 0:09:02Don't try and get overambitious with loads of different
0:09:02 > 0:09:06props like...lizards? OK, lizards.
0:09:06 > 0:09:07Just keep it simple and don't waffle on.
0:09:07 > 0:09:10No-one wants to hear about what you did yesterday,
0:09:10 > 0:09:12the week before, where your favourite place on holiday is,
0:09:12 > 0:09:15your favourite food, where your favourite trainers are,
0:09:15 > 0:09:17where you go to the gym. Just be really simple and to the point.
0:09:19 > 0:09:21Don't go over the top.
0:09:21 > 0:09:24Whoa, this is awesome. Whoa. Ah!
0:09:24 > 0:09:27Just be yourself and keep it normal.
0:09:27 > 0:09:31And that's my three top tips for being on camera. Now this.
0:09:31 > 0:09:34Introducing Mr Mike Tucker.
0:09:34 > 0:09:38Here to show you how to create special effects Hollywood style
0:09:38 > 0:09:39in...
0:09:42 > 0:09:45Today, we're going to show you how to create a wormhole vortex.
0:09:45 > 0:09:49Well, you're not actually going to make a real wormhole vortex,
0:09:49 > 0:09:51but it's going to look like you have.
0:09:51 > 0:09:54So grab yourself a couple of friends and let's get started.
0:09:54 > 0:09:58We're going to create a mysterious wormhole vortex effect,
0:09:58 > 0:10:00similar to ones seen in a film called
0:10:00 > 0:10:02The Adventures Of Baron Munchausen.
0:10:02 > 0:10:05You're going to need some really basic things for this -
0:10:05 > 0:10:08a pair of tights - ask if you can use them first -
0:10:08 > 0:10:11a can of beans, a coat hanger and a torch.
0:10:11 > 0:10:13Step one - cut one of the legs
0:10:13 > 0:10:15off the tights - carefully.
0:10:15 > 0:10:19Try and cut as neatly along that seam as we can.
0:10:20 > 0:10:21Brilliant.
0:10:21 > 0:10:23OK, so we can get rid of those.
0:10:25 > 0:10:28This is going to be the mouth of our vortex.
0:10:29 > 0:10:31Cool.
0:10:31 > 0:10:32Next up, step two.
0:10:32 > 0:10:36Bend the coat hanger into a circle or, better still,
0:10:36 > 0:10:40get someone strong to help you because it's quite hard, really.
0:10:40 > 0:10:43We're going to just try and pull that
0:10:43 > 0:10:47into a slightly rounder shape.
0:10:47 > 0:10:49The nice thing about it is that
0:10:49 > 0:10:51it gives us a handle to hold on to as well.
0:10:51 > 0:10:53Step three -
0:10:53 > 0:10:56tape the open end of a tight leg to the coat hanger.
0:10:56 > 0:10:58Get that strong person to help you with this too, if you want.
0:10:58 > 0:11:00Last bit.
0:11:00 > 0:11:05So that is going to form the mouth of our vortex.
0:11:05 > 0:11:09Step four - time to open up that wormhole.
0:11:09 > 0:11:12Next thing we need to do is make sure that the bottom of our vortex
0:11:12 > 0:11:14is stretched as long as it can be,
0:11:14 > 0:11:18so we need something heavy in there that will pull it down to the floor.
0:11:18 > 0:11:20- So what do you reckon?- The beans.
0:11:20 > 0:11:22A can of beans, exactly.
0:11:23 > 0:11:27Stretch it so it comes all the way down to the bottom of the tights.
0:11:27 > 0:11:28Great.
0:11:28 > 0:11:32Step five - cue lighting effects.
0:11:32 > 0:11:36Now, if you start waving the torch beam up and down the length
0:11:36 > 0:11:39of the tights whilst you're filming straight down there.
0:11:42 > 0:11:45And make it look even better by switching off the lights
0:11:45 > 0:11:47and getting some colour into the action.
0:11:50 > 0:11:52- How's that looking? - It looks really cool.
0:11:52 > 0:11:54And now for the really fun bit.
0:11:54 > 0:11:57Grab your little brother's favourite action figure and send him
0:11:57 > 0:11:59off into the wormhole vortex.
0:11:59 > 0:12:00Ah!
0:12:06 > 0:12:07Whoa, that made my head spin.
0:12:07 > 0:12:10Hi, I'm David Arnold. I'm a film composer.
0:12:10 > 0:12:12Some of my credits are
0:12:12 > 0:12:14Independence Day, Stargate, Godzilla,
0:12:14 > 0:12:18The Chronicles Of Narnia, five James Bond films.
0:12:18 > 0:12:22The purpose of music in film a lot of the time is to hold
0:12:22 > 0:12:26the hand of the audience as they watch what's happening.
0:12:26 > 0:12:27But it's always to try
0:12:27 > 0:12:32and say what is difficult to say with dialogue or just with picture.
0:12:41 > 0:12:44What we are doing is just playing with the way that music can
0:12:44 > 0:12:47change your perception about what's happening in front of you.
0:12:47 > 0:12:50JOLLY MUSIC PLAYS
0:12:50 > 0:12:53I think it's going to be a happy-go-lucky kind of day today.
0:12:55 > 0:12:58This is all about energy and all about movement and blood rushing
0:12:58 > 0:13:01and your heartbeat, so it feels much more casual.
0:13:03 > 0:13:05In the classroom, when learning is hard,
0:13:05 > 0:13:08it's almost like the sound of what you've got inside your own body.
0:13:08 > 0:13:12Your blood rushing and your heartbeat is little bit stronger.
0:13:12 > 0:13:15UPBEAT MUSIC PLAYS
0:13:21 > 0:13:25GENTLE PIANO MUSIC PLAYS
0:13:25 > 0:13:27This is the most popular kid in school.
0:13:27 > 0:13:30So we keep it nice and light and bright and breezy.
0:13:36 > 0:13:38He's having fun with friends.
0:13:38 > 0:13:41It's joyful, it's optimistic, it's relaxed.
0:13:47 > 0:13:51By playing music that says, "We're OK," it feels comfortable
0:13:51 > 0:13:53and it feels like there's no tension there.
0:13:53 > 0:13:57And an easy way of making it feel worse, you could play exactly
0:13:57 > 0:14:01the same music in a minor key and immediately sounds darker.
0:14:01 > 0:14:03SAD MUSIC PLAYS
0:14:05 > 0:14:08I think there's been a bit of a drama.
0:14:12 > 0:14:16If you're going to bed, it's almost like the last chapter of a book.
0:14:16 > 0:14:19The music, in a way, it's like the big finale.
0:14:19 > 0:14:24A big, bright, nice major key and it's sort of warm and delicious,
0:14:24 > 0:14:27and you think you can go to sleep now, everything's all right.
0:14:33 > 0:14:35And finally. Black and white, or colour?
0:14:35 > 0:14:37- Colour.- Black and white.
0:14:37 > 0:14:39- Colour.- Colour.- Black and white
