0:00:04 > 0:00:08On Deadly 60, I've had loads of incredible animal encounters.
0:00:09 > 0:00:12Here's just one of my many favourites.
0:00:13 > 0:00:16This is Deadly 60 Bites.
0:00:18 > 0:00:22For the next animals on my Deadly 60 list, I'm going looking
0:00:22 > 0:00:24for Australia's reptiles.
0:00:24 > 0:00:27You'd think forests would be the best place to look.
0:00:27 > 0:00:29Not always.
0:00:31 > 0:00:33He's just within my reach.
0:00:34 > 0:00:36Oh, he's an absolute beauty!
0:00:38 > 0:00:41You'll have to excuse my undignified climbing.
0:00:44 > 0:00:46There he is.
0:00:46 > 0:00:50He's a Boyd's forest dragon.
0:00:50 > 0:00:54This is a good-sized male and he really doesn't seem too bothered
0:00:54 > 0:00:56about the fact that I've taken him out of his tree.
0:00:56 > 0:00:58Look at that.
0:00:58 > 0:01:02He's got a huge, extendable pouch there,
0:01:02 > 0:01:06underneath the jaw. That's used for signalling to females
0:01:06 > 0:01:10and he really will spend the majority of his day just sitting,
0:01:10 > 0:01:13really chilled out, not doing an enormous amount,
0:01:13 > 0:01:16pretty much like he's doing now actually, clinging to that tree
0:01:16 > 0:01:20using these fearsome claws. Look at that one there!
0:01:20 > 0:01:24That's really extended. The digit on that. Look, that's awesome!
0:01:24 > 0:01:27When something wanders underneath him, maybe a small insect,
0:01:27 > 0:01:30perhaps a frog or another lizard, he'll just drop down
0:01:30 > 0:01:34at lightening speed onto his prey, gobble it up and then scamper back
0:01:34 > 0:01:37up the tree and sit there for the rest of the day.
0:01:40 > 0:01:42Ah! That is just ridiculously lazy.
0:01:42 > 0:01:47'Sorry, Mr Dragon, you're way too chilled to make it on the list.'
0:01:48 > 0:01:53That is one extraordinary reptile but my next Deadly 60 animal
0:01:53 > 0:01:57comes from a very special group of lizards...
0:01:57 > 0:01:59the monitors.
0:01:59 > 0:02:03This is just about as close as we get nowadays to a genuine dinosaur.
0:02:03 > 0:02:07And the reason that I'm considering him for my Deadly 60
0:02:07 > 0:02:11is the amount of weapons that he has at his disposal.
0:02:11 > 0:02:14You find monitors all over the world.
0:02:14 > 0:02:17They're the reptile equivalent of a terminator.
0:02:17 > 0:02:22They have hardcore body armour, razor-sharp claws for close combat,
0:02:22 > 0:02:28a sixth sense, tasting the air with their tongue.
0:02:28 > 0:02:31They can even sniff out crocodile eggs buried in the sand.
0:02:33 > 0:02:36With all-terrain capability,
0:02:36 > 0:02:40and unbelievably they can hold their breath for an hour.
0:02:40 > 0:02:43Nowhere is too steep or too high.
0:02:47 > 0:02:49No prey is too fast.
0:02:52 > 0:02:56They'll even take on the king of beasts.
0:02:56 > 0:02:59And that tail... could whip your eye out.
0:03:05 > 0:03:11It's recently been discovered that monitor lizards have venom.
0:03:11 > 0:03:14It was thought until very recently
0:03:14 > 0:03:17that there were only a couple of lizards in the world
0:03:17 > 0:03:19that were truly venomous.
0:03:19 > 0:03:23But it turns out this guy here has truly venomous spit.
0:03:24 > 0:03:29And...if I got bitten, it would not be a good day for me.
0:03:29 > 0:03:34But as he is just wandering around, checking me out,
0:03:34 > 0:03:38it's a very good day for me.
0:03:38 > 0:03:44It's not often you get that close to a wild monitor lizard of this size.
0:03:45 > 0:03:50I'm not going to move at all, see what he does.
0:03:52 > 0:03:56Look at that. Nose to nose with a lace monitor.
0:04:00 > 0:04:03I can almost smell your breath from here, mate.
0:04:03 > 0:04:06< He can probably smell yours as well, Steve.
0:04:08 > 0:04:12He's just snuffling around with this tongue in the leaf litter.
0:04:12 > 0:04:15I can feel... His tongue just flicked all up my arm.
0:04:15 > 0:04:19Around here, the reptiles really are the top predators.
0:04:19 > 0:04:23The crocodiles and the monitor lizards take the place
0:04:23 > 0:04:25of the lions of the African plains.
0:04:27 > 0:04:30He's a living dinosaur with a venomous bite,
0:04:30 > 0:04:33a whip for a tail and tearing talons.
0:04:33 > 0:04:37The lace monitor is definitely going on my Deadly 60.
0:04:38 > 0:04:42These living dinosaurs are kitted out with truly lethal weapons...
0:04:42 > 0:04:48protective armour, razor-sharp claws and a whipping tail.
0:04:48 > 0:04:50And as if that wasn't enough, they're also venomous.
0:04:50 > 0:04:53These guys have to be on the Deadly 60.
