0:00:03 > 0:00:06On Deadly 60, I've had loads of incredible animal encounters.

0:00:08 > 0:00:11Here's just one of my many favourites.

0:00:12 > 0:00:16This is Deadly 60 Bites.

0:00:22 > 0:00:23So, in India,

0:00:23 > 0:00:27there's an awful lot of wildlife and an awful lot of people.

0:00:27 > 0:00:30How much do the people know about their animals?

0:00:31 > 0:00:34I'm going to do a survey to find out.

0:00:34 > 0:00:37- Do you know these two animals?- Yeah.

0:00:37 > 0:00:40- Tiger and a bear.- Yes, I know.

0:00:40 > 0:00:44- Which do you think is the most scary?- This one is more.

0:00:44 > 0:00:48- Which is the most scary? - Yeah, yeah.- Don't go away!

0:00:48 > 0:00:50- Tiger.- Tiger

0:00:50 > 0:00:52- Tiger.- A tiger.

0:00:52 > 0:00:55Which one do you think is more dangerous?

0:00:55 > 0:00:58- This one.- This one?

0:00:58 > 0:01:00Very good. Everyone says the tiger.

0:01:00 > 0:01:02'And she's right.

0:01:02 > 0:01:06'More people are killed each year by bears than by tigers.

0:01:06 > 0:01:09'Let's get this in perspective, though.

0:01:09 > 0:01:13'Thousands more are killed on roads than by either of these animals.

0:01:13 > 0:01:17'But I don't care about cars and tigers are for another day.

0:01:17 > 0:01:21'I'm heading to a sanctuary to show you why the sloth bear

0:01:21 > 0:01:24'deserves its place on the Deadly 60.

0:01:24 > 0:01:30'First, I want to show you why all the bears we're about to see

0:01:30 > 0:01:33'aren't out in the wild where they should be.

0:01:33 > 0:01:38'Many bear cubs were taken from their mothers and forced to dance.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41'People watching would pay to see this.

0:01:43 > 0:01:46'A rope is threaded through their nose to keep them under control.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49'Their claws and teeth are removed.'

0:01:51 > 0:01:56'Thankfully, this practice is now illegal.

0:01:56 > 0:02:00'Every bear in this sanctuary is a rescued dancing bear

0:02:00 > 0:02:03'living in retirement in natural enclosures

0:02:03 > 0:02:05'with plenty to keep them entertained.

0:02:05 > 0:02:08'While the bears are in another part,

0:02:08 > 0:02:10'I hide their favourite food

0:02:10 > 0:02:13'to show you what makes the sloth bear so deadly.'

0:02:16 > 0:02:19That should be a good bear challenge.

0:02:19 > 0:02:21'This isn't for our benefit.

0:02:21 > 0:02:27'After a life in chains, this gives them a chance to act like wild bears.'

0:02:27 > 0:02:30These logs have got holes in them,

0:02:30 > 0:02:35which I'm filling up with honey and bits of dates.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38Let's get out before the bears come back.

0:02:38 > 0:02:43'We retreat safely behind the fence to watch proceedings.

0:02:43 > 0:02:47'It's hard to believe that these fluffy bears

0:02:47 > 0:02:50'can be more deadly than a tiger.'

0:02:50 > 0:02:54The bears have come tearing over.

0:02:54 > 0:02:57They can sniff the food a mile away!

0:03:00 > 0:03:02Oh, my life! Look at those claws!

0:03:02 > 0:03:06That is some serious weaponry.

0:03:09 > 0:03:13This one here's digging, using those long claws.

0:03:13 > 0:03:18Those would be, in the wild, used mostly for digging termite mounds,

0:03:18 > 0:03:22digging up bees, sucking up the honey, like they're doing now.

0:03:26 > 0:03:31'The sloth bear's strength and claws may be perfect for finding honey,

0:03:31 > 0:03:33'but there's no denying their deadly potential.'

0:03:33 > 0:03:35THE BEARS START HOWLING

0:03:35 > 0:03:37Oh, my life!

0:03:37 > 0:03:40It's gone absolutely mad!

0:03:43 > 0:03:46They've gone from gentle teddy bears

0:03:46 > 0:03:49to a whirling mess of teeth and...

0:03:49 > 0:03:51I'm glad I'm not in there.

0:03:55 > 0:03:58This is why sloth bears can be so dangerous.

0:03:58 > 0:04:01They can turn in an instant.

0:04:02 > 0:04:05They are utterly unpredictable.

0:04:08 > 0:04:10When they do, they're strong. They're powerful.

0:04:10 > 0:04:12They've got awe-inspiring claws.

0:04:16 > 0:04:20I really wouldn't want to be around one when it got angry.

0:04:20 > 0:04:24That fight broke out over a piece of watermelon.

0:04:24 > 0:04:29They will fight teeth and claw to defend their food and their young.

0:04:29 > 0:04:32They'll even repel leopards and tigers.

0:04:32 > 0:04:37They rely on their sense of smell to find termites and honey.

0:04:37 > 0:04:41Their eyesight is terrible, so they're easily surprised.

0:04:41 > 0:04:46Their first instinct is to lash out, and people can be in real trouble.

0:04:46 > 0:04:50It's one thing to see them behind an electric fence,

0:04:50 > 0:04:55but to really understand sloth bears, you need to get face-to-face.

0:04:55 > 0:04:59What do you think, Johnny? Are you looking forward to going in?

0:04:59 > 0:05:02No? I'm not surprised, mate.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07How about you go in and I'll stay out here?

0:05:07 > 0:05:10STEVE LAUGHS

0:05:10 > 0:05:13'Kartik, who runs the sanctuary,

0:05:13 > 0:05:18'assures me that as long as I don't surprise them, I'll be fine.

0:05:21 > 0:05:25'I'm not going to let these bears out of my sight.'

0:05:28 > 0:05:31Ilya, you watch him from behind.

0:05:34 > 0:05:38One of the bears is taking an interest in the cameraman.

0:05:38 > 0:05:41Snuffling away at your boot, Johnny.

0:05:41 > 0:05:47'Having seen what they're capable of, I'm feeling a bit nervous.'

0:05:52 > 0:05:56They're slowly getting used to us. A bit alarmed at us to begin with.

0:05:56 > 0:06:01On his back legs, he can stand at least as tall as I am.

0:06:01 > 0:06:03Once he starts climbing,

0:06:03 > 0:06:07he would absolutely rocket up a tree,

0:06:07 > 0:06:09despite being a lot heavier than me.

0:06:14 > 0:06:16They are wonderful animals.

0:06:16 > 0:06:19I want to give him a great big hug,

0:06:19 > 0:06:24although I'm slightly concerned that he might rip my head off.

0:06:24 > 0:06:28Just spit in my face! Thank you, mate(!)

0:06:32 > 0:06:35I'm going to give you some space.

0:06:36 > 0:06:39'Awesome weaponry,

0:06:39 > 0:06:41'phenomenal strength.

0:06:41 > 0:06:43'Surprise one at your peril.

0:06:43 > 0:06:46'Sloth bear is on the Deadly 60.
