0:00:03 > 0:00:08On Deadly 60 I've had loads of incredible animal encounters.

0:00:08 > 0:00:12Here's just one of my many favourites.

0:00:12 > 0:00:16This is Deadly 60 Bites.

0:00:16 > 0:00:20This time on Deadly 60...

0:00:20 > 0:00:22we're here, in Brazil in South America.

0:00:22 > 0:00:27And this is the Amazon Rainforest, the largest jungle in the world.

0:00:27 > 0:00:30So what are we doing on a boat? Well, round here, this time of year,

0:00:30 > 0:00:33an awful lot of that forest is underwater.

0:00:38 > 0:00:40This will be our base for the next week.

0:00:40 > 0:00:45From it, the team and I will explore an area called the flooded forest.

0:00:45 > 0:00:49And it's exactly that - a gigantic jungle that

0:00:49 > 0:00:51for half the year is under millions of tons of water

0:00:51 > 0:00:53with just the tops of the trees showing.

0:00:57 > 0:01:00Everything that lives here has adapted to the water.

0:01:00 > 0:01:03For the local people, boats are used for everything

0:01:03 > 0:01:07from doing the school run to picking up the shopping.

0:01:07 > 0:01:10The wildlife is very distinctive with amazing birds, mammals,

0:01:10 > 0:01:15reptiles, bugs and the odd fish or two.

0:01:15 > 0:01:17Quite a lot of them...are deadly.

0:01:27 > 0:01:29It's only our first night on our Amazon riverboat,

0:01:29 > 0:01:31and something strange has been spotted

0:01:31 > 0:01:34circling around in the waters.

0:01:34 > 0:01:37So I head down to investigate.

0:01:42 > 0:01:46It was something infinitely more scary than a piranha.

0:01:48 > 0:01:50Oh, my goodness. Look at that!

0:01:50 > 0:01:52Oh, that is grotesque!

0:01:52 > 0:01:56The strange ghostly shapes were a kind of catfish

0:01:56 > 0:01:57called giant candiru.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00Normal candiru are about the size of my little finger,

0:02:00 > 0:02:04so these ones are relative monsters.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07Oh, look at that! It's got right into the belly cavity.

0:02:11 > 0:02:15That is one single bite.

0:02:17 > 0:02:19It just looks like he's bored a hole

0:02:19 > 0:02:21straight into the gut of that fish.

0:02:25 > 0:02:30- That is horrible. - That is absolutely horrid.

0:02:30 > 0:02:36- You going to go swimming now? - Eh, no. No. Or possibly never again.

0:02:37 > 0:02:40This calls for a Deadly 60 experiment.

0:02:40 > 0:02:41OK.

0:02:41 > 0:02:45I'm going to time how long it takes them to devour this piece of steak.

0:02:48 > 0:02:50Just imagine if you fell into the water.

0:02:50 > 0:02:54How long would it take before the candiru started attacking you?

0:02:54 > 0:02:56They are possibly the most grotesque,

0:02:56 > 0:03:00the most frightening fish I think I've ever seen.

0:03:00 > 0:03:03And no sooner have I put this bit of meat into the water,

0:03:03 > 0:03:05then all of a sudden it's... Ow!

0:03:06 > 0:03:14Ha-ha! Suddenly surrounded by seething, white, grotesque catfish.

0:03:14 > 0:03:18Look at... They're shredding it! They are absolutely shredding it.

0:03:18 > 0:03:22They just get a grip with those teeth and then spin their body

0:03:22 > 0:03:25round and round and round and bore into it,

0:03:25 > 0:03:28like some insane living drill bit.

0:03:35 > 0:03:39Dudu reckons that they'll actually do this to a living animal

0:03:39 > 0:03:43swimming these waters at night.

0:03:43 > 0:03:46That is grim.

0:03:46 > 0:03:48Argh!

0:03:48 > 0:03:53Can I take piranhas off the Deadly 60 and put candiru on instead?

0:03:53 > 0:03:55- Yeah.- I wasn't planning on it,

0:03:55 > 0:04:00but I have to say that's one of the scariest fish I've ever seen.

0:04:00 > 0:04:03Oh, ho-ho!

0:04:03 > 0:04:07Look at that.

0:04:09 > 0:04:15From steak to nothing... in 48 seconds.

0:04:16 > 0:04:19I'm certainly not going swimming in there.

0:04:19 > 0:04:20They are evil.

0:04:22 > 0:04:24One of the most gruesome animals on the list,

0:04:24 > 0:04:26they drill a hole through their prey

0:04:26 > 0:04:29and can strip fish or meat right down to the bone

0:04:29 > 0:04:31in a matter of minutes.

0:04:31 > 0:04:33They're absolutely horrifying.

0:04:33 > 0:04:35They're the giant candiru.
