0:00:02 > 0:00:07On Deadly 60, I've had loads of incredible animal encounters.

0:00:07 > 0:00:10Here's just one of my many favourites.

0:00:10 > 0:00:14This is Deadly 60 Bites!

0:00:16 > 0:00:18We've come to the Polar Zoo in Norway

0:00:18 > 0:00:21to get close to one of the most feared animals in the world.

0:00:21 > 0:00:24It's the wolf.

0:00:24 > 0:00:29I have to say now, these are not tame animals.

0:00:29 > 0:00:33They're still wolves so we need to watch our back at all times

0:00:33 > 0:00:36and just keep an eye on them.

0:00:36 > 0:00:40Beyond that fence...look at that!

0:00:40 > 0:00:45With wolf-expert Tess by my side, we should be safe.

0:00:45 > 0:00:47All right... Come on, puppies!

0:00:51 > 0:00:54Tess has been interacting with them since they were puppies,

0:00:54 > 0:00:59but it's not going to be the same with us, particularly with the camera equipment.

0:00:59 > 0:01:01WOLVES WHINE

0:01:01 > 0:01:05So we sit quietly in the hope that the pack will come over for a look.

0:01:06 > 0:01:09This is really interesting.

0:01:10 > 0:01:13As they're approaching, they're kind of chatting to each other.

0:01:13 > 0:01:20Just figuring out who's going to be the first to be allowed to come in and talk to Tess, not to me.

0:01:20 > 0:01:25The fighting and nipping and scratching and biting, it all has a real function

0:01:25 > 0:01:29of keeping the team together and everyone in their right positions.

0:01:29 > 0:01:32It also gives you a really good look at those teeth.

0:01:36 > 0:01:38The canines are huge.

0:01:39 > 0:01:40Utterly ferocious!

0:01:44 > 0:01:49As they approach, they're very much being led by that canine supersense,

0:01:49 > 0:01:51smell.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54Let's see what comes in first.

0:01:54 > 0:01:57Always the nose, always sussing things out

0:01:57 > 0:02:01with that incredible sense of smell first.

0:02:01 > 0:02:042,000 times more powerful than ours.

0:02:06 > 0:02:12'That phenomenal sense of smell is used to track prey from over a mile away in the wild.'

0:02:12 > 0:02:16And imagine not just one nose, but a whole pack,

0:02:16 > 0:02:19testing the air for the first whiff of dinner.

0:02:19 > 0:02:25The wolf uses all 220 million of its scent receptors to deadly use.

0:02:25 > 0:02:31They hunt large animals like deer that can be five times their size,

0:02:31 > 0:02:33and are armed with sharp hooves and antlers.

0:02:33 > 0:02:38The incredible stamina of wolves to run for miles when chasing prey

0:02:38 > 0:02:43means that once they've locked on to a target, they mean business.

0:02:45 > 0:02:49And even these wolves are only one step away from a snap.

0:02:49 > 0:02:50Ow!

0:02:50 > 0:02:55I think I might have moved a little bit too fast there,

0:02:55 > 0:02:57and just got snapped at.

0:03:00 > 0:03:06Wow. Just a nibble...but even so.

0:03:06 > 0:03:09As individuals, wolves are awesome predators,

0:03:09 > 0:03:13but it's when they come together as a pack that they are really deadly.

0:03:13 > 0:03:18The way they bring themselves together, particularly before a hunt, is using a howl,

0:03:18 > 0:03:21and we're going to try that now and see if we can get these guys to join in.

0:03:22 > 0:03:24- Shall we give it a go?- Give it a go.

0:03:24 > 0:03:28THEY HOWL

0:03:30 > 0:03:33WOLVES HOWL

0:03:33 > 0:03:34It's working!

0:03:38 > 0:03:41CHORUS OF HOWLS

0:03:41 > 0:03:48The wolf. The voice of the wilderness and the ultimate team hunter.

0:03:48 > 0:03:51Definitely on the Deadly 60.
