0:00:02 > 0:00:05I'm Steve Backshall, and this is Deadly Art.

0:00:07 > 0:00:11I'm lucky enough to travel the world tracking deadly animals.

0:00:13 > 0:00:17But in this show, my team of artists take my killer moment...

0:00:19 > 0:00:22..and turn it into art.

0:00:22 > 0:00:25Today, we're looking back at the time when the team created

0:00:25 > 0:00:28polar bear artwork for the Children In Need Christmas card.

0:00:28 > 0:00:32Along the way, you can pick up some tips and trick and techniques

0:00:32 > 0:00:35so you can make some art yourself.

0:00:35 > 0:00:40This is no ordinary art show. This is Deadly Art!

0:00:42 > 0:00:45Coming up on Deadly Art...

0:00:45 > 0:00:48I'll show you another exciting Deadly 60 trip when I travelled

0:00:48 > 0:00:538,000 km to encounter the beautiful but lethal polar bear.

0:00:53 > 0:00:55What a magnificent creature.

0:00:55 > 0:01:00The Deadly Art team gets to grips with another amazing art creation.

0:01:00 > 0:01:01Hello, everyone.

0:01:01 > 0:01:04And I'll be visiting the Deadly Art studio too,

0:01:04 > 0:01:06even drawing a deadly doodle.

0:01:06 > 0:01:10- A wry smile.- I'm not sure that polar bears smile!- It's a doodle!

0:01:10 > 0:01:12Fair enough!

0:01:14 > 0:01:17Despite being one of the largest predators,

0:01:17 > 0:01:20these magnificent creatures are adored the world over.

0:01:20 > 0:01:22It's the polar bear.

0:01:22 > 0:01:26They're the world's largest bear, and can weigh 1,000 kilograms.

0:01:26 > 0:01:28That's as much as a small car.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31Their huge feet can be 30 centimetres across.

0:01:31 > 0:01:35That's about the same size as a large pizza.

0:01:35 > 0:01:39And true to their reputation, polar bears love to have fun,

0:01:39 > 0:01:42and they get involved in play fighting at any age.

0:01:42 > 0:01:46So using this play fighting as their inspiration, let's meet our artists.

0:01:46 > 0:01:50As ever, they're ready and waiting in the Deadly Art studio.

0:01:50 > 0:01:54I'm Michelle, and I just love working with different materials.

0:01:54 > 0:01:57I'm all about getting stuck in!

0:01:58 > 0:02:02Hey, I'm Mike. I'm a cartoon artist, and I'm up for today's Deadly Art!

0:02:02 > 0:02:08I'm Jo, I'm a painter... ..Sculptor and a general mess maker!

0:02:08 > 0:02:12Michelle, Mike and Jo will be representing the Deadly Art team,

0:02:12 > 0:02:14who are always up for a challenge.

0:02:14 > 0:02:19Polar bears are amazing! Let's focus on their play fighting.

0:02:19 > 0:02:21We don't want to make our Christmas card too fierce.

0:02:21 > 0:02:24- It has to be popular. - Yeah, we want it to stand out.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26But guys, this is Deadly Art!

0:02:26 > 0:02:28You've got to see some teeth and show some claws.

0:02:28 > 0:02:31I'm thinking a huge canvas with a 3D element,

0:02:31 > 0:02:34- and I know just the thing, all right? - OK.

0:02:34 > 0:02:36- I'm going to start drawing the bears.- Cool!

0:02:36 > 0:02:40Mike's using his cartoon drawing skills, and gets to work.

0:02:40 > 0:02:43- Legs, and we want big feet! - OK, yeah.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46This is a block of polystyrene,

0:02:46 > 0:02:51I'm going to use it to carve out the 3D polar bear.

0:02:51 > 0:02:54Now I'm going to take Mike's drawing of a polar bear

0:02:54 > 0:02:56and trace it onto this acetate sheet.

0:02:57 > 0:03:00I love how fast Mike, Michelle and Jo are working.

0:03:00 > 0:03:03We'll have some cracking polar bear artwork in no time!

0:03:09 > 0:03:12- All right!- Yes!- Let's get drawing!

0:03:12 > 0:03:15Our Deadly Art polar bears are going to be huge!

0:03:15 > 0:03:17Now, when I was on a quest to find one...

0:03:17 > 0:03:20Polar bear tracks everywhere!

0:03:20 > 0:03:24..the Deadly 60 team and I travelled right up into the Arctic Circle.

0:03:24 > 0:03:25Look at these!

0:03:27 > 0:03:30They're quite small! It looks like a young adult!

0:03:30 > 0:03:34It's really something to think that we're sharing the ice

0:03:34 > 0:03:37with one of the world's most terrifying predators!

0:03:40 > 0:03:41The tracks have led us to the coast,

0:03:41 > 0:03:47and now all that lies ahead of us are ever-shifting frozen seas.

0:03:47 > 0:03:50It would be extremely dangerous to venture out there.

0:03:52 > 0:03:55Looks like this polar bear has given us the slip.

0:03:57 > 0:04:00These bones are all that remains of a mighty whale.

0:04:00 > 0:04:02Hopefully that will bring the bears in.

0:04:02 > 0:04:05It's certainly attracted some other animals.

0:04:05 > 0:04:08Just sat, almost totally oblivious,

0:04:08 > 0:04:14no more than 10 metres in front of me, is an Arctic fox.

0:04:14 > 0:04:18And there must be five or six of them on the bones around us.

0:04:18 > 0:04:20These are really important animals for us,

0:04:20 > 0:04:23because Arctic foxes around here actually get a good deal of

0:04:23 > 0:04:29their diet by following polar bears around and picking off their scraps.

0:04:29 > 0:04:33So if there are Arctic foxes around, and they are everywhere,

0:04:33 > 0:04:36then we stand a really good chance of finding our polar bears.

0:04:37 > 0:04:40We know the bears are out there somewhere,

0:04:40 > 0:04:42but seeing them is another matter.

0:04:42 > 0:04:46Stick around to see if we manage to find a polar bear, but now,

0:04:46 > 0:04:50let's get back to our awesome artwork.

0:04:50 > 0:04:52I've marked out the polar bears on our canvas,

0:04:52 > 0:04:56and now I'm just finishing off the red sky for the horizon.

0:04:56 > 0:04:59We've got a great idea for the rest of the sky,

0:04:59 > 0:05:01and you'll see that later.

0:05:01 > 0:05:04We'll use a hot wire to burn through the polystyrene

0:05:04 > 0:05:06to cut out the initial shape.

0:05:06 > 0:05:10This is Deadly, so as you can see, we're all kitted up.

0:05:10 > 0:05:14Deadly Art is all about showing you how art is created,

0:05:14 > 0:05:17but our team are professionals.

0:05:17 > 0:05:21Don't ever attempt anything you see in the big art stages.

0:05:21 > 0:05:23This is Deadly Art at its most extreme.

0:05:26 > 0:05:28Oh, that is very cool!

0:05:31 > 0:05:33Now, let's return to our Arctic trip.

0:05:33 > 0:05:35It may have been freezing,

0:05:35 > 0:05:40but our search for the polar bear was getting warmer.

0:05:40 > 0:05:44It's a bear! No more than 150 metres off from the shore.

0:05:44 > 0:05:49So exciting! I can just feel my heart start beating!

0:05:49 > 0:05:54Out there, about a mile off in the distance, is our first polar bear.

0:05:55 > 0:06:00He's just sort of ambling about at the moment.

0:06:01 > 0:06:06But even from this distance, you can see how powerful he is.

0:06:06 > 0:06:08It's minus 20.

0:06:08 > 0:06:11The crew and I are kitted out in layers and layers of warm clothes.

0:06:11 > 0:06:15Even the camera's got a jacket on! And we can just about work,

0:06:15 > 0:06:20but this animal is totally at home in this frozen wasteland.

0:06:22 > 0:06:26These frozen seas are absolutely essential

0:06:26 > 0:06:28to the polar bear's success.

0:06:28 > 0:06:31It's out there that it finds the majority of its prey.

0:06:31 > 0:06:34Particularly in the winter, when all this is frozen over.

0:06:34 > 0:06:36The seals that it feeds on go through a large amount

0:06:36 > 0:06:39of their life cycle out here. They have their pups out here,

0:06:39 > 0:06:42and that's where the polar bear is at its lethal best.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45What a magnificent creature.

0:06:45 > 0:06:48And back to our magnificent artwork!

0:06:48 > 0:06:50- All right!- That's great.

0:06:50 > 0:06:54- This bear is completely made from polystyrene.- But for this bear,

0:06:54 > 0:06:57the head is cut out of polystyrene, and the body

0:06:57 > 0:07:00is painted on the canvas, which makes it look further away.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03Ur-rgh! Ra-a-ar! BEARS ROAR

0:07:03 > 0:07:05I'm just drawing out our glacier.

0:07:05 > 0:07:08We're going to position our polar bears so it looks like

0:07:08 > 0:07:11- they're standing on the edge of the ice.- And on this canvas,

0:07:11 > 0:07:14we'll use perspective to draw the rest of the glacier,

0:07:14 > 0:07:17so when you view the bears from here, it looks like there's

0:07:17 > 0:07:20a great, big hole in the floor, with a drop...down into the depths.

0:07:20 > 0:07:25I'm going to carve into these, to give them more shape and detail.

0:07:25 > 0:07:27Now this is really deadly!

0:07:28 > 0:07:31It looks fun, but don't try this at home!

0:07:31 > 0:07:35This is our vanishing point. It's the secret of perspective.

0:07:35 > 0:07:38And by drawing lines going away from it, we can make it

0:07:38 > 0:07:42look like there's a crack in the ice with a huge drop below!

0:07:43 > 0:07:44Cool.

0:07:44 > 0:07:47Mike and Michelle are using a special device

0:07:47 > 0:07:50that snaps out their perspective lines with chalk.

0:07:50 > 0:07:54This glacier, drawn on the floor, will really

0:07:54 > 0:07:58show off the polar bears to a much greater effect

0:07:58 > 0:08:01when we reveal the final artwork later in the studio.

0:08:01 > 0:08:03And now it's time for you to get involved!

0:08:03 > 0:08:05Here's Jo with a Deadly Doodle.

0:08:05 > 0:08:09As always, starting off with some simple shapes,

0:08:09 > 0:08:13The first one...is a large oval in the middle of the page.

0:08:13 > 0:08:18Then another oval that overlaps that. This will be his body.

0:08:18 > 0:08:24A circle for his head, and a smaller circle which will be his nose.

0:08:24 > 0:08:28Now, we'll put them all together and start giving it some shape.

0:08:29 > 0:08:33Starting off with the nose and working backwards, along it,

0:08:33 > 0:08:36and then backwards down for the mouth.

0:08:37 > 0:08:42And bringing this line up, over to where his ears come out.

0:08:44 > 0:08:46Over the top and then there's his other ear.

0:08:47 > 0:08:52And this line, jagged down to his first leg.

0:08:52 > 0:08:56Now coming out from where his eyebrow is, I'm going to

0:08:56 > 0:09:02put in his back, which comes down to his back leg and his back paw.

0:09:04 > 0:09:06And then we can bring his legs in.

0:09:08 > 0:09:11And then his first paw is down here.

0:09:11 > 0:09:15And all the time going over those simple shapes

0:09:15 > 0:09:16that we already created.

0:09:16 > 0:09:21Now for the details. I'm going to give him an eye up here.

0:09:21 > 0:09:26And his other eye goes along the top of that circle.

0:09:26 > 0:09:29Some shading in his ears.

0:09:30 > 0:09:32Lastly, those deadly claws!

0:09:35 > 0:09:37Now just like on our big art,

0:09:37 > 0:09:41I'm going to have my polar bear stood on the edge of a high glacier.

0:09:41 > 0:09:46Which is just a curvy line going off into the distance.

0:09:46 > 0:09:50And then some lines coming off it to give it some perspective.

0:09:52 > 0:09:54And now we need to get rid of those guidelines.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57I'm just going to rub them out.

0:10:00 > 0:10:03So, there's our polar bear!

0:10:03 > 0:10:07Looking good, Jo! I'll be giving it a go myself in a bit.

0:10:07 > 0:10:11Well, polar bear art work is really coming on!

0:10:11 > 0:10:13So both our polar bears are in position.

0:10:13 > 0:10:14Now, for the tricky bit.

0:10:14 > 0:10:17Adding in all those fine details with the paint.

0:10:19 > 0:10:22I've been painting in our perspective lines to create

0:10:22 > 0:10:24the edges of the cracks in the ice.

0:10:24 > 0:10:27It looks weird from where I am, but from the vanishing point...

0:10:27 > 0:10:30it looks like I'm on the edge of a massive abyss!

0:10:30 > 0:10:32Oh, wow! That really works!

0:10:34 > 0:10:38The fine detail on the polystyrene polar bears makes them realistic,

0:10:38 > 0:10:42but as it's a special Deadly Art, I just have to get involved.

0:10:42 > 0:10:44- Hello, everyone!- Hey!

0:10:44 > 0:10:47It's Deadly Doodle time. Backshall style.

0:10:47 > 0:10:51Grab your pencil if you want to try it again with me!

0:10:52 > 0:10:57So, here's my polar bear that I did earlier. Now it's your turn, Steve.

0:10:57 > 0:11:00Well, I really can't draw, so if I can do it, ANYONE can.

0:11:00 > 0:11:03OK, we'll start off with some basic shapes.

0:11:03 > 0:11:05- The first one is an oval.- OK.

0:11:05 > 0:11:08Then a slightly smaller oval coming out of that.

0:11:08 > 0:11:12And then a circle at the top here for its head.

0:11:12 > 0:11:14And a smaller circle for its nose.

0:11:16 > 0:11:19Now we're going to turn it into a bear.

0:11:19 > 0:11:20A wry smile.

0:11:20 > 0:11:24- I'm not sure that polar bears actually smile.- It's a doodle.

0:11:24 > 0:11:25- Fair enough.- The chin.

0:11:29 > 0:11:32You're going to draw in the line into the paw.

0:11:32 > 0:11:35The paws are absolutely enormous!

0:11:35 > 0:11:38Huge, like the size of a dinner plate.

0:11:40 > 0:11:42Now it's time to colour in the polar bear,

0:11:42 > 0:11:45and you can do yours at home, too.

0:11:45 > 0:11:47Shading in is the best bit.

0:11:53 > 0:11:57Nearly finished. All it needs is the Steve snake signature.

0:11:57 > 0:11:59There you go. That's my Deadly Doodle

0:11:59 > 0:12:02- for the back of the Christmas card. - Nice one.

0:12:05 > 0:12:09We're making a Christmas card, so we've got to add some sparkle.

0:12:09 > 0:12:11In Alaska, where the polar bears live

0:12:11 > 0:12:13is a phenomenon called the Northern Lights.

0:12:13 > 0:12:16That's right. It lights up the whole of the sky, like this.

0:12:16 > 0:12:19So, we're going to use the spots from Pudsey's bandana

0:12:19 > 0:12:22as our Northern Lights, to add some more colour.

0:12:22 > 0:12:23- Let's do it.- Yep!

0:12:27 > 0:12:31I'm really enjoying my visit to the Deadly Art studio.

0:12:31 > 0:12:33I get to do a bit of spray painting, too!

0:12:42 > 0:12:45The Deadly Art team were given the challenge to create an amazing

0:12:45 > 0:12:49work of art based on these great shots of the polar bear.

0:12:49 > 0:12:51So, are you ready?

0:12:51 > 0:12:53Let's see the finished work of art.

0:12:55 > 0:12:58Oh, that is SO impressive!

0:12:58 > 0:13:02Using a painted canvas, with 3D polar bears placed on top,

0:13:02 > 0:13:03gives it an extra depth.

0:13:03 > 0:13:07They captured the two adults play fighting really well.

0:13:07 > 0:13:12And the 3D ice glacier on the floor has made the canvas even more

0:13:20 > 0:13:23Nice work, guys! I think it's beautiful!

0:13:23 > 0:13:26We'll see you soon for more Deadly Art!
