0:00:00 > 0:00:03I'm Steve Backshall and this is Deadly Art.

0:00:07 > 0:00:11I'm lucky enough to travel the world tracking deadly animals.

0:00:13 > 0:00:16But in this show I'm picking 25 of my favourites.

0:00:21 > 0:00:25I'm challenging my team of deadly artists to recreate a killer moment.

0:00:27 > 0:00:29You'll get to make some art yourself

0:00:29 > 0:00:32and in the final show my team and I will choose

0:00:32 > 0:00:35which animals will make it into my Deadly Art gallery.

0:00:35 > 0:00:39This is no ordinary art show. This is Deadly Art!

0:00:43 > 0:00:44On today's Deadly Art

0:00:44 > 0:00:47I meet a totally fierce feline.

0:00:47 > 0:00:49That was extraordinary!

0:00:49 > 0:00:53My team of artists take on another deadly challenge.

0:00:53 > 0:00:55We can make a huge comic strip.

0:00:55 > 0:00:58And you can make your own art at home too.

0:01:01 > 0:01:05Today's deadly animal is a magical, mystical creature

0:01:05 > 0:01:07renowned for being shy and elusive.

0:01:07 > 0:01:09It's one of the most perfectly adapted predators

0:01:09 > 0:01:11of the northern hemisphere.

0:01:11 > 0:01:14They're beautiful, silent, quick and powerful.

0:01:14 > 0:01:15It's the lynx.

0:01:15 > 0:01:17Lynx are solitary animals,

0:01:17 > 0:01:20spending most of their time alone stalking their forest habitat.

0:01:20 > 0:01:22When it comes to the chase,

0:01:22 > 0:01:26they rely on stealth and ambush to catch prey as large as a reindeer.

0:01:26 > 0:01:30So it's time to meet the team who are ready and waiting in the studio

0:01:30 > 0:01:32for today's Deadly Art mission.

0:01:32 > 0:01:35I'm Mike, a cartoon artist. There's nothing I like more

0:01:35 > 0:01:38than turning my drawings into stencils and making them deadly.

0:01:40 > 0:01:43I'm Deevina. I'm a graphic artist

0:01:43 > 0:01:46and I use a computer to create things like this.

0:01:46 > 0:01:50And in just a moment, you'll join me and the Deadly 60 crew in Norway

0:01:50 > 0:01:53as we come face to face with this mysterious creature.

0:01:53 > 0:01:57But first, here's the killer moment I want my artists to recreate.

0:02:01 > 0:02:03Lynx are Europe's largest cats

0:02:03 > 0:02:06with a startling ability to leap incredibly high

0:02:06 > 0:02:07straight up into the air.

0:02:07 > 0:02:10So these are the three essential elements

0:02:10 > 0:02:11I'd like my artists to recreate.

0:02:11 > 0:02:15The first is that powerful spring over two metres into the air.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18Their muscular frame and strong hind legs

0:02:18 > 0:02:20enable them to catch passing birds by surprise.

0:02:20 > 0:02:24Incredible ears. What makes the lynx different from other big cats

0:02:24 > 0:02:26are these long, black ear tufts.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29These act like antennae, intensifying its hearing,

0:02:29 > 0:02:32so its able to hear a rabbit nibbling grass

0:02:32 > 0:02:34up to 65 metres away.

0:02:34 > 0:02:38Like all cats, the lynx has a beautiful fur coat,

0:02:38 > 0:02:42which can be incredibly thick if they need to keep warm in the snow.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44Mike and Deevina, over to you.

0:02:44 > 0:02:46Those markings are beautiful.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49Yeah, that sandy fur has a really thick texture.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51We can't forget the essential elements -

0:02:51 > 0:02:53we need to have our lynx leaping,

0:02:53 > 0:02:56- swiping at her prey. - Let's make it action-packed.

0:02:56 > 0:02:57We could make a comic strip.

0:02:57 > 0:03:00No, no! We could make a huge comic strip! Let's do it!

0:03:00 > 0:03:03As a cartoon artist, Mike knows what he's talking about.

0:03:03 > 0:03:07All right, every comic strip has panels, so let's start with that.

0:03:07 > 0:03:11I'm going to draw a big box. Let's break it up into, say,

0:03:11 > 0:03:15three cells and we'll leave this for our action sequence at the end.

0:03:15 > 0:03:18- Let's add in some captions. - What about a forest scene?

0:03:18 > 0:03:21Let's get some green bold colours.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24This is really taking shape and, as we know,

0:03:24 > 0:03:25every comic has to tell a story.

0:03:25 > 0:03:28What about if the lynx stalked its prey,

0:03:28 > 0:03:31chased its prey and captured it for that killer moment?

0:03:31 > 0:03:34Yeah, that's perfect. In this final sequence here,

0:03:34 > 0:03:36I was thinking I'd draw this big paw

0:03:36 > 0:03:38and have this huge star burst coming out

0:03:38 > 0:03:41as if it's just caught its prey. What do you think?

0:03:41 > 0:03:44- Great! Let's get the materials.- OK.

0:03:44 > 0:03:46That'll be a killer comic strip.

0:03:46 > 0:03:48The lynx is a dazzling animal

0:03:48 > 0:03:51that lives in both warm and cold countries

0:03:51 > 0:03:53and I got the chance to meet one in snowy Norway.

0:03:53 > 0:03:55First up, I'll need a ladder.

0:03:55 > 0:03:59Lynx are awesome climbers.

0:03:59 > 0:04:02Their retractable claws work like crampons,

0:04:02 > 0:04:04taking them up almost vertical trees.

0:04:04 > 0:04:08A little bit of...meat,

0:04:08 > 0:04:10just up there.

0:04:10 > 0:04:12OK.

0:04:17 > 0:04:20The presence of food switches on their hunting instincts.

0:04:20 > 0:04:22She's thinking about it!

0:04:22 > 0:04:25Go on, girl!

0:04:25 > 0:04:27Ooh, there! Yes!

0:04:30 > 0:04:31Whoa!

0:04:32 > 0:04:35The last...swipe of the paw

0:04:35 > 0:04:37was just so fast!

0:04:39 > 0:04:40Magnificent.

0:04:40 > 0:04:44Join me later, when we'll see more of the lynx's leaping ability.

0:04:44 > 0:04:46How are Mike and Deevina getting on?

0:04:46 > 0:04:50I've made this frame for our huge light box.

0:04:50 > 0:04:53Our comic strip is constructed with clear acrylic sheets

0:04:53 > 0:04:55and we'll have layers of detail in stages

0:04:55 > 0:04:58and at the end we'll shine a light right through it

0:04:58 > 0:04:59to really bring it to life.

0:04:59 > 0:05:01We need to characters and action,

0:05:01 > 0:05:03but I'll start with the background layer.

0:05:03 > 0:05:05The lynx isn't only found in the snow.

0:05:05 > 0:05:09Our cat will be based in a vivid green forest.

0:05:09 > 0:05:11Now all we have to do is stick them down.

0:05:11 > 0:05:14Mike has to be really precise placing that sticky vinyl.

0:05:14 > 0:05:17That's why he's the artist and not me.

0:05:17 > 0:05:21And to prove that, here he is with a Deadly Doodle for you to try.

0:05:21 > 0:05:24I'm going to show you how to draw a simple lynx head.

0:05:24 > 0:05:27It's always about basic shapes, but this time it's very simple.

0:05:27 > 0:05:32Let's start with a big hill in the middle of our paper.

0:05:32 > 0:05:36Two big triangles for the ears and a cup shape for the mouth.

0:05:38 > 0:05:40Add a triangle for the nose

0:05:40 > 0:05:43and two big triangles for the eyes.

0:05:45 > 0:05:48That's your pencil sketch done. Told you it was simple.

0:05:48 > 0:05:50Pick up our black marker and add the details.

0:05:50 > 0:05:52Start with the ear.

0:05:52 > 0:05:55I'm going to give it a bit more shape this time.

0:05:56 > 0:05:58Add in a tuft of hair at the top

0:05:58 > 0:05:59and give it a flap.

0:05:59 > 0:06:01Same on the other side.

0:06:01 > 0:06:04Leaf shape for the ear, tuft of hair at the top

0:06:04 > 0:06:05and a little flap.

0:06:05 > 0:06:08Ears done. We'll move on to the hair.

0:06:08 > 0:06:12Start with the top of his head, simple zigzag shapes.

0:06:12 > 0:06:14Lynx have jagged fur all around their face

0:06:14 > 0:06:15so we'll add that in.

0:06:15 > 0:06:19Big zigzag lines this time.

0:06:19 > 0:06:23Curving down, add that back to our mouth.

0:06:23 > 0:06:25Go back over our pencil lines.

0:06:25 > 0:06:28This time, add a big box on the inside.

0:06:30 > 0:06:32Draw in those big, sharp teeth.

0:06:32 > 0:06:36Two at the top and two smaller ones at the bottom.

0:06:37 > 0:06:40Just shade in the mouth a little bit.

0:06:40 > 0:06:41Now for the nose.

0:06:41 > 0:06:43Go back over your triangle

0:06:43 > 0:06:45and just shade in the bottom half.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51Two lines to connect your nose to your eye.

0:06:51 > 0:06:53Now we can start on those menacing eyes.

0:06:53 > 0:06:55Go back over your pencil line,

0:06:55 > 0:06:59but on the top, add in a big, thick black line.

0:06:59 > 0:07:03For the eye, add a simple curved line and give him that cat's eye.

0:07:07 > 0:07:09Draw a few markings around his eyes.

0:07:09 > 0:07:12They kind of look like eyelashes.

0:07:16 > 0:07:18Add in some details

0:07:18 > 0:07:19for his nose,

0:07:19 > 0:07:22two lines to emphasise the top of his mouth.

0:07:22 > 0:07:25You can't forget his huge whiskers.

0:07:27 > 0:07:29Big long lines here.

0:07:31 > 0:07:32And there you have

0:07:32 > 0:07:35your simple lynx doodle.

0:07:35 > 0:07:38Great lynx, Mike!

0:07:38 > 0:07:40Now over to Deevina, who's finished her light box

0:07:40 > 0:07:43and has placed the background image.

0:07:43 > 0:07:47We've added the next layer of our acrylic sheet and, as you can see,

0:07:47 > 0:07:50this forms great borders for our comic strip.

0:07:50 > 0:07:54These three panels tell the story of our lynx about to catch his prey,

0:07:54 > 0:07:56building up to that killer moment.

0:07:56 > 0:07:59But our story is missing the main character - our lynx.

0:07:59 > 0:08:02So for that we've got more vinyl sheeting.

0:08:02 > 0:08:05All that's left to do is to draw our lynx

0:08:05 > 0:08:06in the three stages of our story.

0:08:11 > 0:08:15Now we need to cut out the shapes and add in the detail.

0:08:18 > 0:08:19Now it's on to the next stage,

0:08:19 > 0:08:23All comic books have bold designs and so does our lynx.

0:08:23 > 0:08:27One of our essential elements is those distinctive markings.

0:08:27 > 0:08:30With the yellow lynx cut out and in position,

0:08:30 > 0:08:34Mike adds more vinyl shapes and colours to add shade and definition.

0:08:34 > 0:08:37Now back to snowy Norway where I get closer to our lynx.

0:08:38 > 0:08:40They are awesome!

0:08:40 > 0:08:43One of the lynx's deadly abilities

0:08:43 > 0:08:47is their capacity to spring straight up in the air from the ground,

0:08:47 > 0:08:50potentially to catch a flying bird.

0:08:50 > 0:08:54And I'm going to try and show you that now.

0:08:54 > 0:08:58Unfortunately this one here has just got an elevated position,

0:08:58 > 0:09:02which is a little bit...freaky.

0:09:02 > 0:09:04I'm hoping she'll come down,

0:09:04 > 0:09:05but not towards me.

0:09:10 > 0:09:12OK, all right. I'm going up.

0:09:17 > 0:09:19OK.

0:09:19 > 0:09:22I'm hoping that's about the right height.

0:09:22 > 0:09:25That's probably just over two metres.

0:09:30 > 0:09:32OK. All three of them are watching.

0:09:35 > 0:09:36Are we going to see it?

0:09:36 > 0:09:38Oh!

0:09:40 > 0:09:43That was extraordinary!

0:09:43 > 0:09:45From a complete standing start,

0:09:45 > 0:09:48two metres straight up into the air.

0:09:48 > 0:09:49The lynx -

0:09:49 > 0:09:55prowling, pouncing predator of the frozen north.

0:09:57 > 0:09:59Definitely deadly!

0:09:59 > 0:10:02And here's a DIY you can definitely try at home.

0:10:02 > 0:10:04OK, I've got this piece of cardboard

0:10:04 > 0:10:07and I've drawn the simple outline of my lynx's head.

0:10:07 > 0:10:09Now, using all different kinds of tape,

0:10:09 > 0:10:11I'm going to make a beautiful lynx art piece.

0:10:11 > 0:10:14I'm going to start with some black electrical tape.

0:10:14 > 0:10:17I'm going to outline where the mouth goes.

0:10:17 > 0:10:20This DIY is based on the doodle Mike drew earlier.

0:10:23 > 0:10:25Fill it all in.

0:10:30 > 0:10:32A simple triangle shape for the nose

0:10:32 > 0:10:35and the same again - two triangles for the eyes.

0:10:37 > 0:10:39OK, that's the main features finished

0:10:39 > 0:10:40and now for all the fur.

0:10:40 > 0:10:44Some nice brown packaging tape will make it look all scruffy.

0:10:44 > 0:10:49I'm just taping it down within the outline that we did earlier.

0:10:49 > 0:10:51The idea here is to be as messy as possible.

0:10:51 > 0:10:54You want lots of wrinkles to give the texture in the fur.

0:10:55 > 0:10:58It doesn't matter which way you go or how you fill it in

0:10:58 > 0:11:01as long as you get that nice layered texture.

0:11:01 > 0:11:06If you have to turn a corner, just pinch your tape and keep sticking.

0:11:08 > 0:11:11OK, that's all the undercoat finished.

0:11:12 > 0:11:15For the eyes, I'm using two bits of sponge that I've cut out.

0:11:15 > 0:11:17I'm going to tape them down.

0:11:18 > 0:11:21That black outline really works to make them look menacing.

0:11:21 > 0:11:25Now, we're going for the shading under the ears.

0:11:25 > 0:11:28Mike's using a dark brown insulating tape.

0:11:34 > 0:11:37For the deadly teeth, I'm using some masking tape.

0:11:37 > 0:11:39Take a nice long strip...

0:11:40 > 0:11:42..and simply just roll it up.

0:11:43 > 0:11:44Keep rolling it around.

0:11:47 > 0:11:50There's one tooth done. Stick it in place.

0:11:56 > 0:11:59And now with some black electrical tape, we'll add in the cat's eye.

0:12:02 > 0:12:04Simple triangle in the middle...

0:12:06 > 0:12:07..of our sponge.

0:12:08 > 0:12:11- And here's your deadly lynx DIY! - Great job!

0:12:11 > 0:12:15Earlier, we saw Mike adding the details to the lynx comic strip.

0:12:15 > 0:12:20- Deevina's got the next addition. - I've printed out these captions.

0:12:25 > 0:12:27The big art is complete,

0:12:27 > 0:12:29but have Mike and Deevina risen to the challenge?

0:12:29 > 0:12:33We've captured the essential elements. The ears are unique.

0:12:33 > 0:12:36I'm loving the tufts at the end. I think it works really well.

0:12:36 > 0:12:40The lynx has a beautiful fur coat. The way we used those shades

0:12:40 > 0:12:42has highlighted those magnificent markings.

0:12:42 > 0:12:44I'm loving the comic book vibe.

0:12:44 > 0:12:48Me too. And of course, the final element - our lynx leaping

0:12:48 > 0:12:52after its prey, that all-important killer moment. Nice work!

0:12:52 > 0:12:53High five!

0:12:55 > 0:12:57So, it's time for the big reveal.

0:12:57 > 0:13:01This is the killer moment I challenged my artists to recreate.

0:13:02 > 0:13:04So let's take a look at our finished art.

0:13:06 > 0:13:08Oh, that is beautiful!

0:13:09 > 0:13:13The graphic art is truly striking, and it definitely includes

0:13:13 > 0:13:17all my essential elements. I love these three comic strip pictures.

0:13:17 > 0:13:21It's a clever way of representing the three stages of hunting.

0:13:22 > 0:13:26Their ears are really distinctive with their pointed ends,

0:13:26 > 0:13:29and I love the magnificent markings on the fur.

0:13:29 > 0:13:32Art just doesn't get any deadlier than this.

0:13:34 > 0:13:35That's a top Deadly rating from me.

0:13:35 > 0:13:38But will it make it into my Deadly gallery? Maybe.

0:13:38 > 0:13:41See you next time for more Deadly Art.
