0:00:02 > 0:00:04I'm Steve Backshall, and this is Deadly Art.
0:00:07 > 0:00:11I'm lucky enough to travel the world tracking deadly animals.
0:00:13 > 0:00:16But in this show, I'm picking 25 of my favourites.
0:00:21 > 0:00:25I'm challenging my team of deadly artists to recreate a killer moment.
0:00:27 > 0:00:29You'll get to make some art yourself.
0:00:29 > 0:00:32And in the final show, my team and I are going to choose which animals
0:00:32 > 0:00:35will make it into my Deadly Art gallery.
0:00:35 > 0:00:39This is no ordinary art show, this is Deadly Art.
0:00:42 > 0:00:43On today's Deadly Art,
0:00:43 > 0:00:47I get in the water with one of the planet's most lethal fish.
0:00:47 > 0:00:49I'm in piranha-infested waters!
0:00:49 > 0:00:53My team of artists recreate another killer piece of art.
0:00:53 > 0:00:55Mike, check out this tail.
0:00:55 > 0:00:57And you can get creative too.
0:00:57 > 0:00:59So, what are we looking at today?
0:01:02 > 0:01:05These frenzied feeders have a fearsome reputation.
0:01:05 > 0:01:08They've even starred in Hollywood blockbuster movies.
0:01:08 > 0:01:10Meet the piranha.
0:01:10 > 0:01:14A predatory fish with a deadly bite and large razor-sharp teeth,
0:01:14 > 0:01:17they can be up to 30cm in length,
0:01:17 > 0:01:19and have been known to attack almost anything
0:01:19 > 0:01:21they find struggling in their waters.
0:01:21 > 0:01:23So, can our artists capture the deadly nature
0:01:23 > 0:01:25of this ferocious fish?
0:01:26 > 0:01:28Time to meet today's team.
0:01:30 > 0:01:32Hey, I'm Mike. I'm a cartoon artist,
0:01:32 > 0:01:35and there's nothing I like more than turning my drawings into stencils
0:01:35 > 0:01:36and making them deadly.
0:01:39 > 0:01:42I'm Michelle, and I just love being creative.
0:01:42 > 0:01:44I'm all about getting stuck in and making stuff.
0:01:46 > 0:01:49In a moment, the Deadly crew and I go searching for piranhas
0:01:49 > 0:01:51in the wetlands of Argentina.
0:01:51 > 0:01:55But first, here's the killer moment I want our artists to capture.
0:01:55 > 0:01:58No prizes for guessing what the first of my essential elements are.
0:01:58 > 0:02:02Teeth. The piranhas' teeth are set in powerful jaws,
0:02:02 > 0:02:04and their top and bottom set interlock,
0:02:04 > 0:02:07giving it the ability to tear and rip flesh.
0:02:07 > 0:02:11Shoals. Piranhas attack in fierce and frenzied groups.
0:02:11 > 0:02:14They send out signals and copy each other's actions.
0:02:14 > 0:02:17They could be considered the deadliest fish in the world,
0:02:17 > 0:02:20as they can take on animals much larger than themselves.
0:02:20 > 0:02:22And finally, speed.
0:02:22 > 0:02:25It's often said that a large shoal of piranhas
0:02:25 > 0:02:26can tear apart a cow in minutes.
0:02:26 > 0:02:29So along with their teeth and teamwork,
0:02:29 > 0:02:32this superb speed is one of their main weapons.
0:02:32 > 0:02:35So, Mike and Michelle, good luck!
0:02:36 > 0:02:40Mike, check this out. For such a small animal, these guys are fierce.
0:02:40 > 0:02:43And the way they hunt in packs, you have to represent that shoal.
0:02:43 > 0:02:46And somehow show that feeding frenzy of those ferocious teeth.
0:02:46 > 0:02:49How about we have some meat that they're shredding?
0:02:49 > 0:02:52- That would be deadly. I like it! - Let's do it.- OK.
0:02:52 > 0:02:53Time for some more Deadly Art.
0:02:53 > 0:02:56How about we use metal as our main material?
0:02:56 > 0:02:59Yeah, that could be good for the scales and the sharp teeth.
0:02:59 > 0:03:00Brilliant.
0:03:00 > 0:03:03If we're going to use metal, these nails will be useful.
0:03:07 > 0:03:10Now, this metal's great cos you can cut it,
0:03:10 > 0:03:14you can bend it into different shapes to create the 3D models.
0:03:14 > 0:03:17Yeah, but first we need to draw our individual body shapes
0:03:17 > 0:03:20on a bit of paper, then transfer to the metal later.
0:03:20 > 0:03:22- Cool, I'll start with the head. - I'll start with the body.
0:03:26 > 0:03:29I'm thinking, if we're going to do bending,
0:03:29 > 0:03:32we might need to do lots of tabs and slots, is that right?
0:03:33 > 0:03:37These teeth will look so ferocious, especially with the metal.
0:03:37 > 0:03:39- They'll look razor-sharp.- Definite.
0:03:39 > 0:03:42It's all going to come together brilliantly, I'm sure. But now,
0:03:42 > 0:03:46let's go to Argentina where I'll get uncomfortably close to a piranha.
0:03:46 > 0:03:48Yay, good catch!
0:03:48 > 0:03:52I'm now about to show you one of the most awesome sets of gnashers
0:03:52 > 0:03:54you'll ever see in the animal kingdom.
0:03:54 > 0:03:58Hopefully, without losing one of my fingers.
0:03:58 > 0:03:59Oh, ooh!
0:04:01 > 0:04:05Ah, look at those!
0:04:06 > 0:04:09The teeth are fiercely, fiercely sharp.
0:04:09 > 0:04:16They interlock with the teeth on the upper jaw, here,
0:04:16 > 0:04:20forming a vicious...trap
0:04:20 > 0:04:23that it uses to munch into other fish
0:04:23 > 0:04:28and animals that are unlucky enough to be struggling in these waters.
0:04:28 > 0:04:32'To show you just how sharp their teeth are...watch this.'
0:04:36 > 0:04:38Did you see how it went through that?
0:04:38 > 0:04:41That was like a chainsaw through chocolate.
0:04:42 > 0:04:43That's what I call sharp.
0:04:43 > 0:04:46More piranha chomping later.
0:04:46 > 0:04:48How are Mike and Michelle getting on with their piranha art?
0:04:48 > 0:04:52Now that we have all of our paper templates cut out,
0:04:52 > 0:04:56we're using a sharpened nail to score our shapes onto the metal.
0:04:56 > 0:04:58Remember, our artists are trained professionals.
0:04:58 > 0:05:01Don't attempt any of the techniques you see in this big art challenge.
0:05:01 > 0:05:04You know what's great about cutting out these individual body parts?
0:05:04 > 0:05:07It'll make our piranhas flexible, which will help us
0:05:07 > 0:05:10- when we make our shoal later. - They'll look fantastic.
0:05:10 > 0:05:12I think so.
0:05:12 > 0:05:16Well, I've scored all my shapes so it's time to start cutting.
0:05:19 > 0:05:21That's what we like.
0:05:21 > 0:05:25Deadly Art's all about extreme power tool action.
0:05:25 > 0:05:28I'm sure it'll look fearsome. Now here's Mike,
0:05:28 > 0:05:30with some art work you can do at home.
0:05:30 > 0:05:32As ever, this is all about shapes.
0:05:32 > 0:05:35So grab your pencil, and let's start with a big half-circle
0:05:35 > 0:05:37in the middle of our page.
0:05:37 > 0:05:41Add in a triangle for the top fin, for the side fin,
0:05:41 > 0:05:43and one last triangle at the bottom.
0:05:43 > 0:05:46Add in a big eye, a big circle in the middle.
0:05:46 > 0:05:48Another half-circle for the other eye. In the middle,
0:05:48 > 0:05:53just below our eye, we're going to add in one line, bring it back.
0:05:53 > 0:05:56That's the jaw. We'll switch to our black marker
0:05:56 > 0:05:58and add in all the deadly details.
0:05:58 > 0:06:01Go back over the pencil line, give it a wave shape.
0:06:01 > 0:06:03Add in a few spines.
0:06:03 > 0:06:06Do the same thing for this side fin.
0:06:06 > 0:06:10At the bottom, we'll add in a zig-zag scratchy line
0:06:10 > 0:06:12and colour it in.
0:06:12 > 0:06:15OK, let's go over to the eye. Nice big thick black line
0:06:15 > 0:06:18around the eye. We'll colour in the pupil with a little C.
0:06:20 > 0:06:24Now we're going to add in the razor-sharp teeth.
0:06:24 > 0:06:27Zig-zag line for that, on the top.
0:06:27 > 0:06:31And again for the bottom. Go back over our pencil shape
0:06:31 > 0:06:33to finish that off.
0:06:33 > 0:06:35Colour in a little bit of black.
0:06:35 > 0:06:37Add a few details around the eye.
0:06:37 > 0:06:40One last thing - you've got to add in the mean eyebrows.
0:06:42 > 0:06:46There you have a totally simple, totally deadly piranha.
0:06:48 > 0:06:51'Nice one, Mike. Over to Michelle.'
0:06:51 > 0:06:55All the body parts are cut out and the best thing about this metal
0:06:55 > 0:06:58is you can bend it into loads of different shapes.
0:06:58 > 0:07:01I'm focusing on the swishy tail.
0:07:01 > 0:07:05'If it's all about bending metal and bolting stuff together,
0:07:05 > 0:07:08'I wouldn't mind having a go myself!'
0:07:08 > 0:07:10Mike, check out this tail.
0:07:10 > 0:07:15You can really see the movement, as if it was swimming to catch its prey.
0:07:16 > 0:07:21I've finished bending now. I've also drilled two holes in the jaw.
0:07:21 > 0:07:23I can line those holes up...
0:07:23 > 0:07:26and start bolting the jaw together.
0:07:30 > 0:07:31Finished the head now and you can
0:07:31 > 0:07:35see how using metal makes these teeth look really deadly and sharp.
0:07:35 > 0:07:38'Totally cybernetic!'
0:07:43 > 0:07:46Wow, our show is really coming to life.
0:07:46 > 0:07:49Yeah, now you can see how the individual body parts have given us
0:07:49 > 0:07:52- flexible movement. - It's looking good!
0:07:55 > 0:07:56'Excellent stuff.
0:07:56 > 0:07:58'Back in the wetlands of Argentina,
0:07:58 > 0:08:00'I've hatched a really cunning plan.
0:08:03 > 0:08:07'I've got a wetsuit and gloves to act as a sort of armour,
0:08:07 > 0:08:08'and a big bit of steak for bait.'
0:08:08 > 0:08:10OK...
0:08:10 > 0:08:13I'm in piranha-infested waters!
0:08:13 > 0:08:15'With the bait in place, and a
0:08:15 > 0:08:18'camera underwater, we'll see anything that comes to investigate.
0:08:18 > 0:08:21'It took less than five seconds for
0:08:21 > 0:08:24'the first piranhas to find our steak.'
0:08:24 > 0:08:26Look at the size of that one!
0:08:26 > 0:08:29Yahay! It's starting to happen.
0:08:29 > 0:08:33OK, once we get a few of those showing interest,
0:08:33 > 0:08:37all of its fellow piranhas will pick up the signals,
0:08:37 > 0:08:39and they'll come in and feed.
0:08:39 > 0:08:41That's when it'll start getting spectacular.
0:08:41 > 0:08:45'The piranha picks up vibrations with a row of tiny hair cells -
0:08:45 > 0:08:47'called a lateral line.
0:08:47 > 0:08:51'Vibrations, coupled with the scent of blood, acts like a dinner bell
0:08:51 > 0:08:53'to others in the area.'
0:08:53 > 0:08:55Look at that!
0:08:55 > 0:08:58They're going absolutely crazy.
0:08:58 > 0:09:05This is just one of the phenomenal displays of predatory behaviour
0:09:05 > 0:09:07you'll ever see!
0:09:07 > 0:09:09The water is thick with fish.
0:09:12 > 0:09:14'Only three minutes later...'
0:09:14 > 0:09:17Look at this!
0:09:17 > 0:09:19Look what's left of our meat.
0:09:19 > 0:09:21They've totally destroyed it.
0:09:21 > 0:09:24'Deadly or what?!
0:09:24 > 0:09:27'Talking of which, it's time for Deadly DIY with Michelle.'
0:09:27 > 0:09:30I'll show you how to make your very own snapping piranha head -
0:09:30 > 0:09:33using a piece of paper and spray paints.
0:09:33 > 0:09:37First, get a square piece of paper.
0:09:37 > 0:09:39Make a series of folds.
0:09:42 > 0:09:44You need some diagonal folds.
0:09:44 > 0:09:46And again,
0:09:46 > 0:09:49the other way.
0:09:49 > 0:09:53Once you have those folds, bring in the corners to the centre.
0:09:57 > 0:09:59Turn it over.
0:09:59 > 0:10:02Again, bring these corners into the centre.
0:10:08 > 0:10:10Once you've done that,
0:10:10 > 0:10:13fold this in half. You'll see
0:10:13 > 0:10:16flaps on either side.
0:10:16 > 0:10:18Put your fingers in there...
0:10:18 > 0:10:21and on the other side,
0:10:21 > 0:10:23this is going to be the head.
0:10:23 > 0:10:26Now we've got our piranha head but
0:10:26 > 0:10:30to keep it secure I'll use double- sided sticky tape here and here.
0:10:30 > 0:10:33Just to keep it nice and tight.
0:10:33 > 0:10:36You can see we've got the mouth now.
0:10:36 > 0:10:39Of course we want to add colour. It's a bit pale.
0:10:39 > 0:10:42'You must have supervision if you're using spray paint.'
0:10:42 > 0:10:47So, I'll start by using red for the inside of the mouth.
0:10:47 > 0:10:50This will make it look really vicious.
0:10:50 > 0:10:53'Normal paint will work just as well.'
0:10:53 > 0:10:55Check that out!
0:10:55 > 0:11:01Then close it up. For the outside, I'm using green.
0:11:04 > 0:11:07All the way round.
0:11:07 > 0:11:11Then, to add extra effects, I'll put some black over...
0:11:11 > 0:11:15just bits and pieces to add speckles.
0:11:20 > 0:11:23Once your colour is done it's time to add teeth.
0:11:23 > 0:11:26I've got some more paper -
0:11:26 > 0:11:29and cut out some razor-sharp teeth.
0:11:29 > 0:11:33I've got some double-sided sticky tape on the back.
0:11:33 > 0:11:39That will simply fit in the bottom of its mouth.
0:11:39 > 0:11:42Again, I've done the same.
0:11:42 > 0:11:45Stick this at the top.
0:11:45 > 0:11:48You'll see it's looking vicious already.
0:11:48 > 0:11:51We want it to come alive so, for the eyes,
0:11:51 > 0:11:55I've cut in half a polystyrene ball, you can also use ping pong balls.
0:11:55 > 0:12:01I've coloured them yellow and got a black marker pen to make the pupils.
0:12:01 > 0:12:05Stick these on either side.
0:12:05 > 0:12:10There you have your very own deadly, snapping piranha.
0:12:10 > 0:12:12'Snappy!'
0:12:15 > 0:12:17We're just hanging our piranha shoal
0:12:17 > 0:12:20but I think the teeth could use improvement.
0:12:20 > 0:12:22Fortunately, I've got an idea.
0:12:22 > 0:12:25In keeping with the metal theme,
0:12:25 > 0:12:26I've got copper paint.
0:12:26 > 0:12:30This will make the teeth glint and look extra deadly.
0:12:30 > 0:12:33- What do you think?- That's really good.
0:12:33 > 0:12:35- Give us a brush, then.- There you go.
0:12:43 > 0:12:46There's just one thing missing.
0:12:46 > 0:12:49- We need to find them something to eat.- Good point.
0:12:53 > 0:12:56- Yeah, these piranhas look vicious. - I loved working with the metal.
0:12:56 > 0:12:59It was so easy to cut and bend it into shapes,
0:12:59 > 0:13:01and quickly create a whole shoal.
0:13:01 > 0:13:02And the teeth look deadly.
0:13:02 > 0:13:05Yeah, I liked how we positioned it into the speedy feeding frenzy.
0:13:05 > 0:13:09Steve was close to the real thing. I hope he likes what we've done.
0:13:09 > 0:13:11I don't know where you got that bone
0:13:11 > 0:13:14from, but those piranhas are making mincemeat of that thing.
0:13:16 > 0:13:18So, it's time for the big reveal.
0:13:18 > 0:13:21Remember, this is the killer moment I challenged my artists to recreate.
0:13:21 > 0:13:25So, let's take a look at our finished art.
0:13:25 > 0:13:27Wow!
0:13:27 > 0:13:32This piranha art really does recreate their frenzied feeding
0:13:32 > 0:13:35in my killer moment. Look at those sharp teeth!
0:13:35 > 0:13:37They are just as scary as the real thing!
0:13:37 > 0:13:39They look very deadly indeed.
0:13:39 > 0:13:43Well done, team, art doesn't get any deadlier than this.
0:13:43 > 0:13:45That's a top deadly rating from me
0:13:45 > 0:13:47but will it make it into my Deadly Gallery?
0:13:47 > 0:13:51Maybe. See you next time for more Deadly Art.
