0:00:02 > 0:00:04I'm Steve Backshall and this is Deadly Art.

0:00:07 > 0:00:11I'm lucky enough to travel the world, tracking deadly animals.

0:00:13 > 0:00:16But in this show, I'm picking 25 of my favourites...

0:00:21 > 0:00:25Then challenging my team of deadly artists to recreate a killer moment.

0:00:27 > 0:00:30You'll get to make some art yourself and, in the final show,

0:00:30 > 0:00:35we'll choose which animals make it into my Deadly Art gallery.

0:00:35 > 0:00:39This is no ordinary art show. This is Deadly Art.

0:00:42 > 0:00:44On today's Deadly Art,

0:00:44 > 0:00:48I come face-to-face with the largest reptile on earth...

0:00:48 > 0:00:51That is just packed with muscle.

0:00:51 > 0:00:54..my team of artists take on a colossal creative challenge...

0:00:54 > 0:00:57A huge croc head with all those teeth in it.

0:00:57 > 0:01:00..and you can make your own deadly art at home, too.

0:01:04 > 0:01:07Today's deadly contender is one of the most ancient animals on earth.

0:01:07 > 0:01:10They've been around for more than 200 million years

0:01:10 > 0:01:15and, with 64 teeth in their mouths, they're one of the only animals

0:01:15 > 0:01:17that will hunt AND eat a human being.

0:01:17 > 0:01:20This is the saltwater crocodile.

0:01:21 > 0:01:23Time to meet today's team.

0:01:25 > 0:01:27I'm Mike. I'm a cartoon artist.

0:01:27 > 0:01:30I like turning my drawings into stencils

0:01:30 > 0:01:31and making them deadly!

0:01:34 > 0:01:37I'm Deevina. I'm a graphic artist and I use a computer

0:01:37 > 0:01:39to create things like this.

0:01:39 > 0:01:43In just a moment, they'll join me to look for crocs in Australia.

0:01:43 > 0:01:48If you need more proof of how deadly they can be, take a look at this.

0:01:48 > 0:01:52With a lethal combination of immense strength, power and a bite

0:01:52 > 0:01:54that can tear chunks out of its prey,

0:01:54 > 0:01:58the Australian saltwater crocodile is a serious deadly contender.

0:01:59 > 0:02:02This is today's killer moment.

0:02:02 > 0:02:05These are the three elements I'd like my artists to focus on.

0:02:05 > 0:02:09Saltwater crocs are the largest reptile on earth.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12They can grow to seven metres long and weigh over a ton.

0:02:12 > 0:02:16They have huge jaws, with massive, powerful muscles to drive them

0:02:16 > 0:02:19giving them one of the fiercest bite forces of any animal.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22Croc are famous for their death roll. They grab their prey

0:02:22 > 0:02:26then spin around on their axis, allowing them to tear chunks

0:02:26 > 0:02:29out of their prey, or to overcome or drown animals.

0:02:29 > 0:02:31Nice.

0:02:31 > 0:02:34Another important element is the croc's scaly skin.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37They're covered in bony plates and bumps called scoots,

0:02:37 > 0:02:40which give them a real prehistoric look.

0:02:40 > 0:02:44Those are the essential elements. Mike and Deevina, over to you!

0:02:44 > 0:02:47Whoa! Look at that guy! He's ferocious! Look how big he is!

0:02:47 > 0:02:50- That's insane!- Look at those teeth!

0:02:50 > 0:02:55That's what we have to do. A model, larger than life, extra deadly.

0:02:55 > 0:02:57A huge croc head with all those teeth in it.

0:02:57 > 0:03:00Let's get a block of polystyrene, cut a shape out of it.

0:03:00 > 0:03:02- Let's start with a template. - Let's go.

0:03:05 > 0:03:09The jaws of the crocodile are absolutely massive.

0:03:09 > 0:03:11I'll start by drawing a template of the upper jaw.

0:03:16 > 0:03:18Now we cut it out.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21Another extreme art, requiring power tools.

0:03:21 > 0:03:23Our artists are trained professionals.

0:03:23 > 0:03:27Don't even attempt to do anything you see in our big crocodile art.

0:03:27 > 0:03:31That's coming on nicely. They're making a real aquatic terror!

0:03:36 > 0:03:40Over to Australia, and I'm searching for a croc that's causing trouble.

0:03:40 > 0:03:43In Australia's Northern Territory, the rivers genuinely are

0:03:43 > 0:03:44full of big crocodiles.

0:03:44 > 0:03:48The locals have learnt how to deal with it - it's rarely a problem.

0:03:48 > 0:03:52Every once in a while, a crocodile associates people with food.

0:03:52 > 0:03:55Then that's a problem and it needs to be moved.

0:03:55 > 0:03:58I'm here with local rangers to help them out

0:03:58 > 0:04:02and to get as close as you possibly can in the wild to a saltwater croc.

0:04:02 > 0:04:06Tonight we're hunting a particular croc that has been taking

0:04:06 > 0:04:10a bit too much of an interest in some fishermen on the river bank.

0:04:10 > 0:04:14Jonathan's in charge of getting hold of the croc once we get close to it,

0:04:14 > 0:04:20using these prongs, which will go into the really hard scales

0:04:20 > 0:04:22on the back of the crocodile's neck.

0:04:22 > 0:04:27That might seem cruel, but these creatures are so strong,

0:04:27 > 0:04:30so hardy, that'll be little more than a pin prick is to us.

0:04:30 > 0:04:32It'll be enough to draw the croc close to the boat,

0:04:32 > 0:04:34where we can get control.

0:04:36 > 0:04:38After several hours of searching,

0:04:38 > 0:04:41one of the rangers thinks he's spotted our croc.

0:04:55 > 0:04:57I think we've got him.

0:04:57 > 0:04:58Dramatic stuff!

0:04:58 > 0:05:01We'll return to Australia soon, but back to the Deadly Art studio.

0:05:01 > 0:05:06We've got Deevina's template on the side of a block of polystyrene.

0:05:06 > 0:05:09Now we have to cut it out.

0:05:09 > 0:05:12Using hot wires to cut the polystyrene

0:05:12 > 0:05:13is like a knife through butter.

0:05:16 > 0:05:20This mega-croc requires a lot of skill.

0:05:20 > 0:05:23Now it's your turn. Here's Deevina with a deadly doodle.

0:05:23 > 0:05:25This doodle's all about letters.

0:05:25 > 0:05:29We'll start with a C - the head of the crocodile.

0:05:29 > 0:05:32We'll add another C for the body.

0:05:32 > 0:05:34Another one for the body again.

0:05:34 > 0:05:38Once you've done that, add smaller Cs for the legs.

0:05:40 > 0:05:44Now add a Z for the mouth. Make sure you get it really big.

0:05:44 > 0:05:49Draw a sideways V to connect the mouth.

0:05:49 > 0:05:52I'll draw my curvy tail now.

0:05:54 > 0:05:56Now I'm adding the ridges.

0:05:57 > 0:06:01This is like a road going down the hills.

0:06:01 > 0:06:05It's getting slightly bigger as you come towards the head.

0:06:05 > 0:06:08This helps you locate the eye, in the centre of the road.

0:06:08 > 0:06:10That's my sketch done.

0:06:10 > 0:06:14Now the secret to a good doodle is being bold with your pen.

0:06:14 > 0:06:16I'm filling in the detail of the tail.

0:06:16 > 0:06:19Getting the bold lines in there.

0:06:21 > 0:06:23Drawing through the legs.

0:06:23 > 0:06:27Adding in the V shapes for the foot.

0:06:27 > 0:06:29Make sure you keep them nice and sharp.

0:06:29 > 0:06:31Getting in his claws there.

0:06:32 > 0:06:33Adding the body.

0:06:33 > 0:06:35Getting the other leg in there.

0:06:35 > 0:06:38Making sure the lines are very jaggedy

0:06:38 > 0:06:43to emphasize the rough, scaly texture of the crocodile's skin.

0:06:43 > 0:06:45Getting the last claw there.

0:06:45 > 0:06:48Into the deadly part of the mouth now.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51That crocodile looks like it's been in a fight!

0:06:51 > 0:06:53It has a brilliant character already!

0:06:53 > 0:06:57Right, now I think it's time for the best bit - the teeth.

0:07:00 > 0:07:02I'm going to add some nice, sharp teeth in here.

0:07:04 > 0:07:07I'm adding a bold, thick line to emphasise the shadow

0:07:07 > 0:07:09underneath the jaw.

0:07:11 > 0:07:15To make the eyes look mean, I'm adding in lines above the eyes

0:07:15 > 0:07:20for shading and definition. And more lines underneath,

0:07:20 > 0:07:21to make it look really angry.

0:07:21 > 0:07:24Nice work, Deevina, it looks so realistic!

0:07:26 > 0:07:30I'm adding in texture here. I'm doing some scales

0:07:30 > 0:07:31to get a nice, rough look.

0:07:35 > 0:07:39That's one scary crocodile. Check him out!

0:07:39 > 0:07:43Now, that's a croc I'd like to meet! Back to our big art.

0:07:43 > 0:07:46So now it's down to scrubbing in all the details

0:07:46 > 0:07:49to make sure we get those jaw muscles to really stand out

0:07:49 > 0:07:51and the ridges on the head. Go for it!

0:07:53 > 0:07:55That looks like great fun!

0:07:58 > 0:08:01OK. So we've finished our big crocodile's head.

0:08:01 > 0:08:04We've got both the top and bottom of our jaw, all carved and sanded out.

0:08:04 > 0:08:08And we've interlocked them with our big, powerful jaw muscle.

0:08:08 > 0:08:11Now, before we even start to think about painting it,

0:08:11 > 0:08:13we have to add in the prehistoric skin.

0:08:13 > 0:08:15That's one of our essential elements.

0:08:15 > 0:08:17Yeah, and for that we've got this latex sheeting.

0:08:17 > 0:08:20We're going to cover the whole of the head with it.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23And extra thick latex shapes for those individual scales.

0:08:23 > 0:08:25Great work, guys.

0:08:25 > 0:08:29Let's head back to Australia, where we found our troublesome croc.

0:08:29 > 0:08:31He's a good size!

0:08:32 > 0:08:37The croc's rolling. This is... part of the way it feeds.

0:08:37 > 0:08:41He's using... clamping down those massive jaws

0:08:41 > 0:08:43then using its bulk to tear its prey apart

0:08:43 > 0:08:46but it's also using that now to try and escape the noose.

0:08:46 > 0:08:49It takes quite some shifting.

0:08:50 > 0:08:51OK... watch!

0:08:52 > 0:08:55I mean, look at the size of the tail down there,

0:08:55 > 0:08:57next to Mark the cameraman.

0:08:57 > 0:09:00I mean, that is just packed with muscle.

0:09:01 > 0:09:05He's absolutely magnificent, as close to a living dragon

0:09:05 > 0:09:07as you'll ever get.

0:09:07 > 0:09:09Fancy making your own living dragon?

0:09:09 > 0:09:11Here's Mike with the DIY.

0:09:11 > 0:09:15I'm going to show you how to make this deadly, snapping crocodile.

0:09:15 > 0:09:18First you need to start with a hinge for a mouth

0:09:18 > 0:09:21and for that, I decided a CD case would be perfect.

0:09:21 > 0:09:23It's basically already a mouth.

0:09:23 > 0:09:27Let's start with the bottom jaw. Take half of your CD case.

0:09:27 > 0:09:30Now, to get that curved shape in the mouth,

0:09:30 > 0:09:33you need to take half of a cereal box.

0:09:33 > 0:09:37I've covered mine in black sticky-backed plastic.

0:09:37 > 0:09:40You could also paint yours. This is just to help with the skin texture.

0:09:40 > 0:09:45With double-sided tape, and some black tape, secure it in place.

0:09:49 > 0:09:53All right, that's half of your mouth finished.

0:09:53 > 0:09:56To get that skin texture, bubble wrap is perfect.

0:09:56 > 0:09:58Get yourself a piece of it.

0:09:58 > 0:10:03Now we're going to paint it with a mix of PVA glue and green paint.

0:10:05 > 0:10:06Give it a good mix.

0:10:07 > 0:10:09The PVA glue helps the paint to stick to the plastic.

0:10:09 > 0:10:13If you don't use PVA glue, your paint will flake right off.

0:10:16 > 0:10:18Give it two coats, then let it dry

0:10:18 > 0:10:21and you'll get this. I've added different shades of paint here

0:10:21 > 0:10:23to make the skin more realistic.

0:10:23 > 0:10:26Now you just have to stick this to your mouth.

0:10:26 > 0:10:28Peel off our double-sided tape.

0:10:28 > 0:10:31Make sure you leave extra at the end so we can wrap it around

0:10:31 > 0:10:35and make the end of the mouth nice and neat. Tape it on one half.

0:10:35 > 0:10:36Stick in it place.

0:10:38 > 0:10:41To create the end of the mouth, we'll use a tucking technique.

0:10:41 > 0:10:43Fold in the sides.

0:10:44 > 0:10:47- Bring this up to the middle. - Just like wrapping up a present.

0:10:47 > 0:10:50Take a piece of tape, secure it in place.

0:10:52 > 0:10:56To hide your piece of tape, get yourself a bit of red card.

0:10:56 > 0:10:58Peel off your double-sided tape again.

0:10:59 > 0:11:01Place that down on top.

0:11:02 > 0:11:03There's half of your mouth.

0:11:03 > 0:11:07What would a crocodile be without deadly teeth. For those, you'll need

0:11:07 > 0:11:10three pieces of foam board.

0:11:10 > 0:11:13Cut them into nice, angular sharp teeth.

0:11:13 > 0:11:15Again, peel off your double-sided tape.

0:11:18 > 0:11:21And the last one, the front teeth.

0:11:26 > 0:11:29That's your bottom jaw finished. You'll do another one

0:11:29 > 0:11:32for your top jaw, but for this one,

0:11:32 > 0:11:35I've done a pinch and fold technique to make the nostrils.

0:11:35 > 0:11:36We're going to use the CD case again.

0:11:36 > 0:11:41Clip it in place, and there you have your working jaw.

0:11:42 > 0:11:46The last thing you need to add are those cold, staring eyes.

0:11:46 > 0:11:50Get yourself a polystyrene ball. You can buy this at any craft store.

0:11:50 > 0:11:53I've cut mine in half, painted it yellow, one for each eye.

0:11:55 > 0:11:58Now you need to take another bit of your bubble wrap

0:11:58 > 0:12:00that you painted like skin,

0:12:00 > 0:12:02place it on top,

0:12:02 > 0:12:04wrap it around and tape it in place.

0:12:08 > 0:12:11Two more pieces of tape to outline the eye.

0:12:14 > 0:12:18To draw that angry look, draw your pupil just off centre.

0:12:23 > 0:12:26And there you have your deadly snapping crocodile!

0:12:26 > 0:12:28Nice DIY!

0:12:28 > 0:12:31Back to Deevina with our big crocodile mouth.

0:12:31 > 0:12:32Wow!

0:12:32 > 0:12:36I'm painting the inside of the mouth a really lovely, fleshy colour.

0:12:39 > 0:12:42The powerful bite of the crocodile can tear apart its large prey

0:12:42 > 0:12:46in no time, and that's because of these bad boys.

0:12:46 > 0:12:47It's time to place the teeth.

0:12:53 > 0:12:55ROARING

0:12:55 > 0:12:58And our croc mouth is ready for display.

0:12:58 > 0:13:00Look at our model - it's absolutely huge!

0:13:00 > 0:13:03You can understand how any prey who saw that coming at them

0:13:03 > 0:13:08- would be very scared.- The strength, the jaws, they look so powerful.

0:13:08 > 0:13:11And the skin. These guys have been around since the dinosaur age.

0:13:11 > 0:13:13The way we layered up the latex

0:13:13 > 0:13:16has definitely given our croc a prehistoric look.

0:13:16 > 0:13:19So it's time for the big reveal.

0:13:19 > 0:13:22Remember, this is the killer moment I challenged my artists

0:13:22 > 0:13:23to recreate.

0:13:23 > 0:13:26So let's take a look at our finished art.

0:13:26 > 0:13:27ROARING

0:13:27 > 0:13:28Whoa!

0:13:28 > 0:13:29Look at that!

0:13:29 > 0:13:32Look at the way the crocodile is smashing its way

0:13:32 > 0:13:35through the Deadly Art studio's concrete floor!

0:13:35 > 0:13:38This has definitely recreated my killer moment.

0:13:38 > 0:13:42The teeth look sharp and fierce, and the scaley skin is so realistic

0:13:42 > 0:13:46this contender's got to be high on my list to the Deadly Art gallery.

0:13:46 > 0:13:48That's a top Deadly rating from me,

0:13:48 > 0:13:51but will it make it into my Deadly gallery?

0:13:51 > 0:13:54Maybe. See you next time for more Deadly Art.
