0:00:02 > 0:00:03This is Deadly Art.

0:00:07 > 0:00:11I travel the world tracking deadly animals.

0:00:11 > 0:00:13ANIMAL SNARLS

0:00:13 > 0:00:17But in this show, I'm picking 25 of my favourites...

0:00:21 > 0:00:25..and challenging my team of Deadly Artists to recreate a killer moment.

0:00:27 > 0:00:30You'll get to make some art yourself, and in the final show

0:00:30 > 0:00:35we'll choose which animals will make it into my Deadly Art gallery.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37This is no ordinary art show.

0:00:37 > 0:00:39This is Deadly Art!

0:00:43 > 0:00:47Today we brave the cold to face another Deadly Art beast!

0:00:47 > 0:00:52That is a perfect Alaskan wildlife experience!

0:00:52 > 0:00:55The Deadly Artists take on another challenge.

0:00:55 > 0:00:57Steve is going to love it!

0:00:57 > 0:01:00And you can make your own art at home too.

0:01:03 > 0:01:06I've met some really fierce animals

0:01:06 > 0:01:09and today's contender is no exception.

0:01:09 > 0:01:14The brown bear, sometimes known as the grizzly, may look cuddly

0:01:14 > 0:01:16but it's still a powerful predator.

0:01:16 > 0:01:19The brown bear's one of the world's largest bears and can tower

0:01:19 > 0:01:23on its hind legs as much as three metres tall

0:01:23 > 0:01:26and can weigh as much as 725 kilos.

0:01:26 > 0:01:29That's the weight of a small car!

0:01:29 > 0:01:34Brown bears love salmon. They'll gather by rivers in the summer

0:01:34 > 0:01:38to catch the fish as they swim upstream to spawn.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41All that oily fish helps keep them warm in winter.

0:01:41 > 0:01:44Time to meet the artists waiting in the Deadly Art studio

0:01:44 > 0:01:45for their mission.

0:01:45 > 0:01:48I'm Michelle and I just love being creative.

0:01:48 > 0:01:52I'm all about getting stuck in and making stuff.

0:01:53 > 0:01:57I'm Nicola. I'm an ice-sculptress and a power-tool queen!

0:01:57 > 0:01:58CHAINSAW BUZZES

0:01:58 > 0:02:01'In just a moment, you'll join me and the Deadly crew

0:02:01 > 0:02:04'in a very cold Alaska on the trail of the brown bear.'

0:02:04 > 0:02:07It's absolutely f-f-freezing!

0:02:08 > 0:02:12'While we prepare, this is the killer moment

0:02:12 > 0:02:14'I'd like captured.'

0:02:14 > 0:02:17Today there are three essential elements about bears

0:02:17 > 0:02:19I want our artists to recreate.

0:02:19 > 0:02:23Claws - they're great for grip, climbing, for digging -

0:02:23 > 0:02:27when they're not snaffling salmon with those sharp teeth.

0:02:27 > 0:02:31To keep warm in harsh winters, the bear has a thick coat

0:02:31 > 0:02:34with longer hair down its neck.

0:02:34 > 0:02:39And finally, size. This animal is massive on every scale.

0:02:39 > 0:02:42Like the brown bear, I want your art to be really big.

0:02:42 > 0:02:46So, Michelle and Nicola, think huge!

0:02:46 > 0:02:49Firstly, look at the size of him! He's so intimidating.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51We've got to go big.

0:02:51 > 0:02:54And the claws capturing that salmon, let's have that.

0:02:54 > 0:02:57And his fur, it's really thick, let's add texture.

0:02:57 > 0:03:02- What would be cool is something urban, graphic...- Graffiti!

0:03:02 > 0:03:04This is going to be interesting!

0:03:07 > 0:03:10- Have you got it? - Yeah, future bear, coming through!

0:03:10 > 0:03:13- Let's get this down... - So let's do three bears.

0:03:13 > 0:03:15Mummy, Daddy, Baby. This can be our first bear.

0:03:15 > 0:03:18- Let's start drawing out. Got a pencil?- Got one, Nicola!

0:03:18 > 0:03:22That's a handy place to keep a pencil!

0:03:24 > 0:03:28It's looking great, Michelle. This calls for the power tools!

0:03:28 > 0:03:30And Nicola loves her power tools!

0:03:30 > 0:03:32Deadly Art to the max!

0:03:32 > 0:03:36But remember, don't attempt any of these big art techniques.

0:03:36 > 0:03:38Nicola is a trained professional.

0:03:46 > 0:03:50'The brown bear is a real greedyguts. So over in Alaska,

0:03:50 > 0:03:53'we know that where there's salmon, there'll be a grizzly.'

0:03:53 > 0:03:56There's loads of animal tracks in the soft snow

0:03:56 > 0:03:58along the shoreline here.

0:03:58 > 0:04:00We'll go in and get a closer look.

0:04:01 > 0:04:06Sandy shorelines like these are absolutely perfect for holding

0:04:06 > 0:04:10prints of animals but soft snow like this is even better.

0:04:11 > 0:04:17And that...is about as perfect a print as you'll ever see.

0:04:17 > 0:04:21Big pad there, five discernible toes and you can even see

0:04:21 > 0:04:23the claw marks at the end.

0:04:23 > 0:04:26This is exactly the animal we're hoping to find.

0:04:26 > 0:04:33You can see right down to the shoreline here...

0:04:33 > 0:04:34And look how deep...

0:04:36 > 0:04:38..this has sunk in.

0:04:38 > 0:04:40That's a very heavy animal.

0:04:40 > 0:04:42A brown or grizzly bear.

0:04:43 > 0:04:45It's round here somewhere.

0:04:45 > 0:04:49The tracks continue on the other side around the shore

0:04:49 > 0:04:52so that's where we're heading too.

0:04:52 > 0:04:56'We're about to go much closer on the trail of the brown bear.'

0:04:56 > 0:04:59But for now, it's back to the Deadly Art studio.

0:04:59 > 0:05:03How are Michelle and Nicola getting on with their graffiti bears?

0:05:03 > 0:05:08We've cut out our family of bears and the next stage is to colour in

0:05:08 > 0:05:12the background. For that, I'm using a mix of two browns.

0:05:12 > 0:05:15Oi, Nicola, chuck us that brown.

0:05:15 > 0:05:18Cheers. We're using a black marker to highlight the outline.

0:05:18 > 0:05:19I love this bit.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25That's certainly coming together,

0:05:25 > 0:05:27now for a Deadly Doodle with Michelle.

0:05:28 > 0:05:32I'm going to show you how to make a Deadly Doodle of a brown bear.

0:05:32 > 0:05:38I start by drawing a horizontal line...across this paper...

0:05:38 > 0:05:43and two triangle shapes down, one on either side.

0:05:43 > 0:05:49Halfway down this you're going to do another horizontal line across,

0:05:49 > 0:05:52and a rectangular shape along the side,

0:05:52 > 0:05:53with a circle inside.

0:05:53 > 0:05:59Then another circle on the top. And here, a triangle sticking out,

0:05:59 > 0:06:02and a kind of triangle shape at the back.

0:06:02 > 0:06:07Next, get a brown marker pen and start to draw around.

0:06:07 > 0:06:11The great thing about the marker pen, is it already gives

0:06:11 > 0:06:14that nice, furry effect.

0:06:14 > 0:06:16Give him a nice eye...

0:06:17 > 0:06:22..and it really helps to add some texture.

0:06:28 > 0:06:32And you can use it to accentuate things like his big, chunky legs.

0:06:33 > 0:06:38Once you've gone all the way round, you're going to do some shading.

0:06:38 > 0:06:42I've got a dark brown and a light brown pencil...

0:06:42 > 0:06:47and just go round the edges. Nice, messy strokes.

0:06:47 > 0:06:52This is going to help to make the bear look a bit more realistic.

0:06:53 > 0:06:56When you're doing shading, try and think about

0:06:56 > 0:07:00which areas of the bear would be darker than others.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03Use a lighter-coloured brown and just go up and out

0:07:03 > 0:07:06from those original strokes.

0:07:06 > 0:07:09Just into the picture a bit more.

0:07:09 > 0:07:11And there you have your deadly bear!

0:07:11 > 0:07:16Stick around cos Nicola's going to be using this in her Deadly DIY later!

0:07:16 > 0:07:18That's fantastic, Michelle!

0:07:18 > 0:07:21But how's the big art coming along?

0:07:21 > 0:07:23Because the claws are one of Steve's essential elements,

0:07:23 > 0:07:27I'm going to use a stencil, so I get really sharp, defined lines.

0:07:27 > 0:07:29Then it will look extra deadly!

0:07:32 > 0:07:36The white spray paint really defines those large claws.

0:07:38 > 0:07:39Look at that!

0:07:41 > 0:07:44Stencils are used a lot in graffiti art,

0:07:44 > 0:07:48and I've put one on the bear's face to give it structure and character.

0:07:48 > 0:07:52'Let's leave Michelle and Nicola for now and head back to Alaska.

0:07:52 > 0:07:55'The footprints in the snow are leading us to a perfect sighting.'

0:07:55 > 0:07:57Oh!

0:07:57 > 0:07:58Oh! Bear! Bear!

0:07:59 > 0:08:01Dead ahead of us!

0:08:03 > 0:08:04Look at that!

0:08:05 > 0:08:09Just wandering along the shoreline!

0:08:09 > 0:08:11Oh, my goodness! Look at that!

0:08:11 > 0:08:14He's going right into the water.

0:08:14 > 0:08:17He's just caught a salmon!

0:08:17 > 0:08:20He's just reached in and grabbed a salmon.

0:08:22 > 0:08:26At this time of year, when they have so much food available,

0:08:26 > 0:08:28he's quite unlikely to attack us

0:08:28 > 0:08:31unless he starts to feel that we're a threat to him.

0:08:31 > 0:08:33So I think it's important that we just go in

0:08:33 > 0:08:35carefully and cautiously.

0:08:35 > 0:08:38Just feel our way around things.

0:08:43 > 0:08:45Oh, look at that.

0:08:45 > 0:08:48He's come back to get the rest of his dinner.

0:08:51 > 0:08:55That is the perfect Alaskan wildlife experience

0:08:55 > 0:08:58and even though you can't see him right now,

0:08:58 > 0:09:02he is no more than a couple of metres back from the edge.

0:09:02 > 0:09:06It never ceases to amaze me how an animal that size

0:09:06 > 0:09:10which is obviously within metres of us, can just vanish.

0:09:10 > 0:09:13But he's there, he's watching us.

0:09:13 > 0:09:16He's just sat, looking right at me.

0:09:17 > 0:09:19He's coming back down to the shore again.

0:09:19 > 0:09:21Look, here he comes.

0:09:23 > 0:09:25He's just sniffing the air,

0:09:25 > 0:09:28just sussing us out.

0:09:28 > 0:09:32But then, this IS one of the largest carnivores in the world.

0:09:36 > 0:09:37What a privilege!

0:09:38 > 0:09:39Oh, here he goes!

0:09:39 > 0:09:43Yes! Look at that.

0:09:46 > 0:09:50They are so efficient.

0:09:50 > 0:09:52That's just incredible.

0:09:53 > 0:09:56They are utterly spectacular predators.

0:10:00 > 0:10:02I don't believe it!

0:10:02 > 0:10:05THAT was certainly a grizzly encounter.

0:10:05 > 0:10:07Now it's time for a Deadly DIY.

0:10:07 > 0:10:11I'll show you how to make your own bear graffiti

0:10:11 > 0:10:13using a stencil technique.

0:10:13 > 0:10:17I've started by drawing the outline of the bear using the Deadly Doodle

0:10:17 > 0:10:20that Michelle showed you earlier.

0:10:20 > 0:10:24Using a scalpel, I'll cut him out. You might want help with this.

0:10:24 > 0:10:27Nicola's right. Scalpels can be dangerous,

0:10:27 > 0:10:30so get grown-up supervision.

0:10:30 > 0:10:37Try to pick up as much detail as you can. All these textured fur lines,

0:10:37 > 0:10:39every single little edge.

0:10:41 > 0:10:44There you have your bear stencil.

0:10:44 > 0:10:46Now it's time to have some fun.

0:10:46 > 0:10:50I've been out and about, finding unusual places to put my bear.

0:10:50 > 0:10:56I thought it might be nice for him to have a walk in the park.

0:10:56 > 0:10:59I've taken a photo, blown it up to A3 size,

0:10:59 > 0:11:03and I'll place my bear into the picture.

0:11:05 > 0:11:11Using some brown paint and sponge, I'll dab inside the stencil.

0:11:11 > 0:11:14Make sure you get into all those nooks and crannies,

0:11:14 > 0:11:17right up to the edge,

0:11:17 > 0:11:20so you really define that outline.

0:11:20 > 0:11:23Make sure you hold the stencil firmly in place.

0:11:26 > 0:11:31I'm using a bit of white to define those important areas.

0:11:31 > 0:11:34The front of the legs, the top of the bear's back and head.

0:11:34 > 0:11:41When you've finished, very carefully remove your stencil

0:11:41 > 0:11:44and there you have it - your bear in the park.

0:11:45 > 0:11:48Those pigeons had better watch out!

0:11:48 > 0:11:50Now you can really have some fun with it.

0:11:50 > 0:11:56I thought my grizzly bear might be more at home in the snow.

0:11:56 > 0:11:59Following that, maybe he wants to take himself off

0:11:59 > 0:12:02for a nice warm holiday by the ocean.

0:12:02 > 0:12:06Looks a bit warm for a grizzly bear, so it's time to take himself home.

0:12:08 > 0:12:12Thank goodness he's using a zebra crossing.

0:12:12 > 0:12:14Give it a go yourself. Back to the big art.

0:12:14 > 0:12:17I'm using this stencil - it's a simple S-shape.

0:12:17 > 0:12:21Lighter shade of brown and this will add extra texture

0:12:21 > 0:12:24to our essential element of thick fur.

0:12:28 > 0:12:32- Michelle, check this out. - That looks vicious!

0:12:32 > 0:12:34Let's get them into position.

0:12:44 > 0:12:46I don't know about you, Michelle,

0:12:46 > 0:12:48but I'm REALLY happy with our graffiti.

0:12:48 > 0:12:50We definitely got the size sorted.

0:12:50 > 0:12:53And those claws look menacing. I wouldn't like to be a salmon.

0:12:53 > 0:12:57I love the texture you've created with that fur - it looks awesome.

0:12:57 > 0:13:00- Steve will love it.- He better!

0:13:01 > 0:13:06So, it's time for the big reveal. Remember, this is the killer moment

0:13:06 > 0:13:08I challenged my artists to recreate.

0:13:08 > 0:13:11Let's look at our bear family in all its glory.

0:13:13 > 0:13:17Oh, that is fantastic! Truly deadly.

0:13:17 > 0:13:19These bears represent all the qualities

0:13:19 > 0:13:22I asked Michelle and Nicola to include.

0:13:22 > 0:13:25This bear's overpowering height represents

0:13:25 > 0:13:29what a fearsome creature it can be - a fantastic killer moment.

0:13:29 > 0:13:31Massive art on a massive scale.

0:13:31 > 0:13:32The claws are huge,

0:13:32 > 0:13:36and the way Michelle and Nicola shaded them so realistically,

0:13:36 > 0:13:37it's really impressive.

0:13:37 > 0:13:41The fur's great, the choice of stencilling is sheer genius.

0:13:41 > 0:13:45Very nice - art doesn't get any deadlier than this.

0:13:46 > 0:13:48That's a top Deadly rating from me,

0:13:48 > 0:13:50but will it make it into my Deadly gallery?

0:13:50 > 0:13:53Maybe. See you next time for more Deadly Art.
