0:00:02 > 0:00:04I'm Steve Backshall and this is Deadly Art.
0:00:07 > 0:00:11I'm lucky enough to travel the world tracking deadly animals.
0:00:13 > 0:00:16But in this show I'm picking 25 of my favourites.
0:00:21 > 0:00:25Challenging my team of deadly artists to recreate a killer moment.
0:00:27 > 0:00:30You'll get to make some art yourself and in the final show,
0:00:30 > 0:00:33my team and I are going to choose which animals will make it
0:00:33 > 0:00:35into my Deadly Art gallery.
0:00:35 > 0:00:39This is no ordinary art show - this is Deadly Art!
0:00:44 > 0:00:45On today's Deadly Art,
0:00:45 > 0:00:49I meet a classic hunter in the forests of Norway.
0:00:49 > 0:00:50Utterly ferocious!
0:00:50 > 0:00:54My team push art to the limit in today's challenge.
0:00:54 > 0:00:56I think we go dramatic with this one.
0:00:56 > 0:00:58And you can make your own deadly art at home.
0:01:03 > 0:01:07Today's animal is the largest wild member of the dog family.
0:01:07 > 0:01:10And just wait till you see their deadly side.
0:01:10 > 0:01:15We're looking at grey wolves, also known as Arctic or timber wolves.
0:01:15 > 0:01:17Wolves have incredible stamina,
0:01:17 > 0:01:20they can run for miles and miles without getting tired
0:01:20 > 0:01:22which means that once they've chosen their prey,
0:01:22 > 0:01:24it has very little chance of escape.
0:01:24 > 0:01:26Time to meet the Deadly Art team,
0:01:26 > 0:01:29who are ready and waiting in the studio.
0:01:29 > 0:01:31Hey, I'm Mike, I'm a cartoon artist.
0:01:31 > 0:01:34I like turning my drawings into stencils...
0:01:34 > 0:01:36and making them deadly!
0:01:38 > 0:01:41I'm Michelle and I just love being creative.
0:01:41 > 0:01:44I'm all about getting stuck in and making stuff.
0:01:45 > 0:01:48In just a moment, you'll join me in Norway
0:01:48 > 0:01:51when I have a close encounter with a grey wolf.
0:01:51 > 0:01:53Ooh!
0:01:53 > 0:01:57I think I might have moved a little bit too fast there.
0:01:57 > 0:02:00But now, here's the killer moment I'd like my artists to recreate.
0:02:00 > 0:02:05And the artwork must include these three essential elements.
0:02:05 > 0:02:06First, teamwork.
0:02:06 > 0:02:08Wolves have a keen hunting instinct
0:02:08 > 0:02:12and they'll instantly home in on any animal which leaves its herd.
0:02:12 > 0:02:16They'll then bring it down with their powerful jaws.
0:02:16 > 0:02:21Teeth. Wolves have 42 sharp teeth, which is ten more than humans.
0:02:21 > 0:02:24These combine with powerful jaws and incredible stamina
0:02:24 > 0:02:26to make them highly efficient hunting machines.
0:02:26 > 0:02:31And howl. Wolves are famous for their spine-tingling howls.
0:02:31 > 0:02:33HOWLING
0:02:33 > 0:02:35Howls are used to communicate within the pack
0:02:35 > 0:02:38or to warn other, neighbouring packs not to come too close
0:02:38 > 0:02:41and they can be heard as much as ten kilometres away!
0:02:41 > 0:02:44So, Mike and Michelle, let's see what you come up with.
0:02:44 > 0:02:47Wow, what a fantastic picture.
0:02:47 > 0:02:50- Check out those razor-sharp teeth and the menacing snarl.- Yeah.
0:02:50 > 0:02:52We can incorporate those elements into our art.
0:02:52 > 0:02:56- Definitely.- Take a look at this picture.- Yeah, the piercing howl.
0:02:56 > 0:02:58If that's how they communicate, we should do two.
0:02:58 > 0:03:02- One howling and one prowling!- I am loving it and I think we go big,
0:03:02 > 0:03:05dramatic with this one. How about using wood?
0:03:05 > 0:03:07Yeah, actually, that could work.
0:03:07 > 0:03:09We could do lots of detail with the teeth and the fur.
0:03:09 > 0:03:11- Loving it. Let's get to work! - Let's do it!
0:03:11 > 0:03:14Time for some more Deadly Art.
0:03:14 > 0:03:18Mike and Michelle are on a mission to turn sheets of wood into wolves.
0:03:22 > 0:03:24OK, so we've got all of our materials laid out.
0:03:24 > 0:03:27Now let's get going with our two big, dramatic wolf models.
0:03:27 > 0:03:29So I'm going to start with the wolf's leg.
0:03:29 > 0:03:32We'll leave Mike and Michelle sketching their wolves.
0:03:32 > 0:03:35But I'm off to the Arctic Circle in Norway
0:03:35 > 0:03:37and a chance to get really close to some grey wolves,
0:03:37 > 0:03:40who are being studied by a biologist called Tess.
0:03:44 > 0:03:47As they're approaching...
0:03:47 > 0:03:48they're chatting to each other.
0:03:50 > 0:03:53Just kind of figuring out who's going to be the first to be allowed,
0:03:53 > 0:03:56probably to come in and talk to Tess, not to me.
0:03:57 > 0:03:59- Hello.- Stay.
0:03:59 > 0:04:01Hello. Oh, wow.
0:04:05 > 0:04:08OK. Now they're starting to build up their confidence.
0:04:09 > 0:04:11They're still playing with each other,
0:04:11 > 0:04:14there's still definitely some nerves going on.
0:04:14 > 0:04:17The fighting, the nipping, the scratching, the biting,
0:04:17 > 0:04:20it all has a real function of keeping the team together
0:04:20 > 0:04:23and keeping everyone in their right positions.
0:04:23 > 0:04:27It also gives you a really good look at those teeth.
0:04:29 > 0:04:31The canines are huge!
0:04:32 > 0:04:34Utterly ferocious.
0:04:36 > 0:04:40Tess knows each wolf and their different personalities.
0:04:40 > 0:04:43As they come closer, they greet her by licking her face.
0:04:45 > 0:04:47Although they might seem very much like domestic dogs,
0:04:47 > 0:04:50these wolves are still wild animals
0:04:50 > 0:04:52and our movements have to be slow and cautious.
0:04:52 > 0:04:56I mustn't let myself forget how deadly these animals really are.
0:04:56 > 0:04:59And the wolves are quick to remind me of who's in charge.
0:04:59 > 0:05:01Go on. Look!
0:05:01 > 0:05:03Ooh!
0:05:05 > 0:05:08I think I might have moved a little bit too fast there.
0:05:08 > 0:05:09And just got snapped at.
0:05:14 > 0:05:17Just show that there's nothing in my hands.
0:05:23 > 0:05:25Wow.
0:05:25 > 0:05:26Just a...
0:05:26 > 0:05:29Just a nibble but even so.
0:05:29 > 0:05:32As individuals, wolves are awesome predators
0:05:32 > 0:05:36but it's when they come together as a pack that they are really deadly.
0:05:36 > 0:05:38The way they come together,
0:05:38 > 0:05:40particularly before a hunt, is using a howl.
0:05:40 > 0:05:44I'm going to try that now and see if I can get these guys to join in.
0:05:45 > 0:05:47- Here we go.- Give it a go.
0:05:47 > 0:05:54THEY HOWL
0:05:54 > 0:05:57WOLVES HOWL
0:05:57 > 0:06:01HE HOWLS
0:06:01 > 0:06:05The howl can be heard by other wolves over six miles away
0:06:05 > 0:06:10and also acts as a warning signal to rival pack to stay away.
0:06:10 > 0:06:12WOLVES HOWL
0:06:12 > 0:06:15That was totally awe-inspiring.
0:06:15 > 0:06:16Just like our Deadly Art.
0:06:16 > 0:06:19How are Mike and Michelle getting on with their wolves?
0:06:19 > 0:06:23So we've used our paper templates to draw our big shapes on to the wood.
0:06:23 > 0:06:25All right. Let's cut them out.
0:06:29 > 0:06:31Deadly Art is always extreme
0:06:31 > 0:06:35and it wouldn't be the same without some power tool action.
0:06:35 > 0:06:37But remember, don't try this at home.
0:06:37 > 0:06:38Let's join Mike now,
0:06:38 > 0:06:41who's going to show you how to draw your very own wolf.
0:06:41 > 0:06:43It's Deadly Doodle time.
0:06:43 > 0:06:46Just grab our pencils. This one is simple, all about letters.
0:06:46 > 0:06:50So we're going to start with a big M in the middle of our paper.
0:06:50 > 0:06:51M for Mike.
0:06:51 > 0:06:53From then on out, it's all Vs.
0:06:53 > 0:06:58A big V for the ear on the side. More Vs for the fur.
0:07:01 > 0:07:04That zig zag line is for the scruff of the neck.
0:07:04 > 0:07:07We're done with the pencil. Let's get a big, thick marker
0:07:07 > 0:07:09and we'll add in the details.
0:07:09 > 0:07:11Let's start with the deadly teeth.
0:07:11 > 0:07:13Get those right.
0:07:13 > 0:07:15Now we'll go on to the nose...
0:07:17 > 0:07:20..which leads you to the mouth.
0:07:23 > 0:07:26Come back around for the chin.
0:07:26 > 0:07:29Bring that back down for another V.
0:07:29 > 0:07:34Let's go back over those Vs with some nice, big, thick strokes.
0:07:35 > 0:07:38Now we're going to do the bridge of the nose.
0:07:38 > 0:07:42So that's just a few curved shapes, one big hump for the eyebrow.
0:07:42 > 0:07:45Now we're going to add in the ear, here,
0:07:45 > 0:07:48which kind of looks like a leaf.
0:07:48 > 0:07:53Come back for the back over here with some other big, thick strokes.
0:07:53 > 0:07:57What we need to add here is the eye. So that's another V.
0:08:01 > 0:08:04We'll colour in the mouth...
0:08:04 > 0:08:06so it looks wide open.
0:08:06 > 0:08:11There you have it, a simple, deadly, howling wolf.
0:08:11 > 0:08:15Great doodle, Mike. Make sure you DO try that at home.
0:08:15 > 0:08:18We've cut out our wooden shapes. Now it's time for the fun bit.
0:08:18 > 0:08:20We'll piece them together.
0:08:20 > 0:08:22You can really see how big these beasts are going to be.
0:08:22 > 0:08:24This is the size of just one of his legs!
0:08:24 > 0:08:27And check out this, Mike. This is going to be his head.
0:08:29 > 0:08:33These are going to look great! And more power tools!
0:08:33 > 0:08:37I've finished drilling the shapes that can't be slotted together.
0:08:37 > 0:08:40Time to start spray painting. How are you getting on?
0:08:40 > 0:08:43Yep, er... Almost finished painting. I've just got this back leg to do.
0:08:43 > 0:08:46- And the head?- There's a special treatment for that.
0:08:46 > 0:08:47I'll show you later.
0:08:47 > 0:08:51- Hm! Chuck us the can, then. - Sure.- Cheers.
0:08:55 > 0:08:58The wolves are starting to look deadly.
0:08:58 > 0:09:01But right now, here's Michelle with a DIY.
0:09:01 > 0:09:05I'm using Mike's wolf drawing to create our Deadly DIY.
0:09:05 > 0:09:09We're going to place this on a black piece of card
0:09:09 > 0:09:13and secure it down with a bit of masking tape at the top...
0:09:13 > 0:09:16and at the bottom.
0:09:16 > 0:09:23And then, using a scalpel, I'm going to cut around the edges of the wolf.
0:09:23 > 0:09:27Starting off with its big, sharp teeth.
0:09:27 > 0:09:29Whilst you're cutting out, be careful,
0:09:29 > 0:09:31because we're cutting through the card.
0:09:31 > 0:09:34So make sure you've got something sturdy underneath
0:09:34 > 0:09:36so you don't ruin any furniture.
0:09:37 > 0:09:40Now, I'm using a scalpel but you can use scissors.
0:09:40 > 0:09:43If you do choose to use a scalpel, get an adult to help you.
0:09:43 > 0:09:48Make sure, when you're cutting, you press really hard
0:09:48 > 0:09:51so it goes right through the card.
0:09:58 > 0:10:01And be very careful with your fingers whilst you're cutting.
0:10:01 > 0:10:05I'm not going to cut right down to the bottom.
0:10:06 > 0:10:11And you'll see why I do this a little later on.
0:10:11 > 0:10:12Just going to leave it there...
0:10:12 > 0:10:15then carry on with the top.
0:10:18 > 0:10:20And now we've cut round the outline of the wolf,
0:10:20 > 0:10:24I'm going to cut the Vs in the middle and the eye
0:10:24 > 0:10:26and you'll see why I'm doing this a bit later on.
0:10:29 > 0:10:31So once you've cut all the way around, inside and out,
0:10:31 > 0:10:33you're going to...
0:10:33 > 0:10:38take the tape off the top and remove the excess paper, like this.
0:10:39 > 0:10:42When you get to the bottom, just gently...
0:10:42 > 0:10:44rip it off. Like that.
0:10:44 > 0:10:48So now, to add some colour, I've got some chalk.
0:10:48 > 0:10:51I'm going to use a bit of yellow, white and blue.
0:10:51 > 0:10:52Start off with the yellow
0:10:52 > 0:10:56and just very carefully shade around our wolf,
0:10:56 > 0:11:00taking it right to the edges of the black card
0:11:00 > 0:11:04and I'm kind of doing it in like a circular motion.
0:11:04 > 0:11:07And this is really going to help the wolf stand out.
0:11:07 > 0:11:12I'm just mixing the chalk colours like this.
0:11:12 > 0:11:16It gives a really great effect.
0:11:16 > 0:11:19So on top of the white, I'm just putting a bit of blue.
0:11:19 > 0:11:23Can you see how all the colours are mixing really nicely together?
0:11:26 > 0:11:29We're going to take off the white piece of paper
0:11:29 > 0:11:33and you'll be left with the wolf outline that you cut out before.
0:11:33 > 0:11:36You're going to remove these V shapes,
0:11:36 > 0:11:37so you're left with the holes.
0:11:37 > 0:11:39And now for the clever bit,
0:11:39 > 0:11:42I've cut a circle out of a cream piece of card
0:11:42 > 0:11:46and this is going to slot behind our wolf.
0:11:46 > 0:11:50And there we have our deadly, howling wolf silhouette.
0:11:50 > 0:11:55Fantastic DIY, Michelle. Now, back to Mike with our big Deadly Art.
0:11:55 > 0:11:58This prowling wolf is almost finished. It looks pretty deadly.
0:11:58 > 0:12:00To define the features of the face,
0:12:00 > 0:12:02I'm going to use a technique called blowtorching,
0:12:02 > 0:12:05which is really simple. It's just heat and wood.
0:12:05 > 0:12:09And what it gives is really nice, contrasting colours on the face.
0:12:09 > 0:12:11Our artists are trained professionals.
0:12:11 > 0:12:13Don't do this at home!
0:12:15 > 0:12:17And the wolves are ready.
0:12:17 > 0:12:20You know, I think these wolves turned out pretty well.
0:12:20 > 0:12:23- Good call, using the wood. - Yeah, the models look so menacing,
0:12:23 > 0:12:24the way we've positioned them.
0:12:24 > 0:12:26Now, you know, speaking of position,
0:12:26 > 0:12:29seeing as we have a howler and a prowler, we have covered Teamwork.
0:12:29 > 0:12:32- And check out the prowler's teeth. They are vicious.- Yeah.
0:12:32 > 0:12:35- Steve came pretty close to those! - Yeah.- Job done!
0:12:35 > 0:12:37Well, I think there's one last thing we need.
0:12:37 > 0:12:40- And that's a wintery location. - Awesome.
0:12:42 > 0:12:44So, it's time for the big reveal.
0:12:44 > 0:12:49Remember, this is the killer moment I challenged my artists to recreate.
0:12:49 > 0:12:51So let's take a look at the finished art.
0:12:53 > 0:12:56Oh, that is spectacular!
0:12:56 > 0:13:00This is truly deadly and it includes all my essential elements.
0:13:00 > 0:13:04I wasn't expecting snow but it really helps create the atmosphere.
0:13:04 > 0:13:08The wolves look stunning silhouetted against a cold winter's moon.
0:13:08 > 0:13:12The position of that wolf really shows those fierce gnashers
0:13:12 > 0:13:13from my killer moment.
0:13:13 > 0:13:15Love the second wolf in mid-howl,
0:13:15 > 0:13:19maybe ready to rally the rest of the pack to hunt down dinner.
0:13:19 > 0:13:22You can get a real sense of the pack teamwork here.
0:13:22 > 0:13:26Well done, Mike and Michelle! Art doesn't get any deadlier than this.
0:13:26 > 0:13:27That's a top Deadly Rating from me
0:13:27 > 0:13:30but will it make it into my Deadly Gallery?
0:13:30 > 0:13:33Maybe. See you next time for more Deadly Art.
