0:00:02 > 0:00:05My name's Steve Backshall. This is Deadly Art.
0:00:07 > 0:00:11I'm lucky enough to travel the world, tracking deadly animals.
0:00:13 > 0:00:16But in this show, my team of artists take my killer moments...
0:00:19 > 0:00:22..and turn it into art.
0:00:22 > 0:00:25And we'll reveal another unique creation.
0:00:25 > 0:00:29Along the way, you'll get to pick up tips, tricks and techniques
0:00:29 > 0:00:31so you can make some art yourself.
0:00:33 > 0:00:36This is no ordinary art show, this is Deadly Art.
0:00:41 > 0:00:43Coming up on Deadly Art...
0:00:43 > 0:00:46I'm hanging out with a colony of predators.
0:00:46 > 0:00:49I think...I'm about to go. Argh!
0:00:49 > 0:00:53My team of artists recreate another killer piece of art.
0:00:53 > 0:00:55Steve in a cave, eye-to-eye with a bat.
0:00:55 > 0:00:58That is what Deadly Art is all about.
0:00:58 > 0:01:01And we'll show you another Deadly Doodle.
0:01:04 > 0:01:07Imagine two-million winged,
0:01:07 > 0:01:10deadly animals coming towards you in a flying storm cloud.
0:01:10 > 0:01:15Meet the wrinkle-lipped bat and their colony of thousands.
0:01:15 > 0:01:18There are many species of bats found around the world.
0:01:18 > 0:01:21But the thing that makes this species so incredible
0:01:21 > 0:01:24is the sight of them leaving their roost to hunt en masse.
0:01:24 > 0:01:28Between them, these bats could eat up to 30,000 kilograms
0:01:28 > 0:01:30of insects in just one night of foraging.
0:01:30 > 0:01:34That's the equivalent weight of five fully-grown elephants.
0:01:34 > 0:01:39Time to meet our art team ready for today's Deadly Art challenge.
0:01:39 > 0:01:42I'm Michelle. I just love working with different materials.
0:01:42 > 0:01:45I'm all about getting stuck in.
0:01:46 > 0:01:50I'm Nicola, and I'm the power-tool queen.
0:01:53 > 0:01:55They are representing the Deadly Art team,
0:01:55 > 0:01:58who are always up for a challenge.
0:01:58 > 0:02:02And here are today's killer shots to inspire the artwork.
0:02:02 > 0:02:04Bats are the only mammal that can truly fly
0:02:04 > 0:02:08and they are extraordinarily agile when they're on the wing.
0:02:08 > 0:02:12This enables them to catch flying insects in mid air.
0:02:12 > 0:02:16When they're en masse, they're one of the most impressive sights.
0:02:16 > 0:02:19And in just a moment, you'll see me dangling with them.
0:02:19 > 0:02:22And that's part of today's killer moment, too.
0:02:22 > 0:02:25The wrinkle-lipped bat is so unusual.
0:02:25 > 0:02:28There's something about bats hanging in a cave that is really creepy.
0:02:28 > 0:02:31Make sure we incorporate that feeling into the artwork.
0:02:31 > 0:02:34Steve was hanging in there with them.
0:02:34 > 0:02:37- If we include him, that'll make for a really cool image.- Let's do it.
0:02:37 > 0:02:39Time for some more Deadly Art.
0:02:42 > 0:02:46We're going to create a massive picture
0:02:46 > 0:02:48using spray paint and stencils.
0:02:48 > 0:02:52We'll have Steve hanging in the cave with bats flying all around him.
0:02:52 > 0:02:55We've created a photo montage of Steve hanging with the bats
0:02:55 > 0:02:57and I'm just tracing over it with this acetate,
0:02:57 > 0:03:01picking out all these essential elements.
0:03:01 > 0:03:05- This will be the foundation for our massive artwork.- Cheers, Nicola.
0:03:08 > 0:03:10With Nicola's tracing projected on here,
0:03:10 > 0:03:14we can start drawing around the picture and create our stencils.
0:03:14 > 0:03:16- There you go.- Cheers.
0:03:16 > 0:03:19I can't wait to see the colony of bats represented in a piece of art.
0:03:20 > 0:03:22And this is that very moment
0:03:22 > 0:03:26where I descended deep into Gomantong Cave in Borneo.
0:03:27 > 0:03:31When they're not flying, bats generally rest high up
0:03:31 > 0:03:33and hanging down.
0:03:33 > 0:03:36When they want to fly again, they let go and accelerate quickly,
0:03:36 > 0:03:39allowing them to get into their flying position easily.
0:03:41 > 0:03:43Now, I'm a mammal, just like a bat.
0:03:43 > 0:03:45So let's see how long I can hang on for.
0:03:49 > 0:03:52I can't quite believe I'm doing this!
0:03:54 > 0:03:57Right, OK.
0:03:57 > 0:04:00So I'm hanging on using muscle power.
0:04:00 > 0:04:03Beneath me at the moment,
0:04:03 > 0:04:08well, it's about 90 metres down to the floor of the cave,
0:04:08 > 0:04:10which is a long way.
0:04:10 > 0:04:13I've been hanging on for...not long.
0:04:13 > 0:04:17Probably...15-20 seconds.
0:04:17 > 0:04:21And already...the steel wire's cutting into my fingers.
0:04:22 > 0:04:26Bit frightened about quite how far down it is at the moment.
0:04:26 > 0:04:28Argh!
0:04:29 > 0:04:33Now, bats can do this for a very, very long time.
0:04:33 > 0:04:36They don't use their muscles like I'm dong.
0:04:36 > 0:04:41Instead, they switch on their talons or their claws.
0:04:41 > 0:04:45Bats' ligaments and muscles work differently to ours.
0:04:45 > 0:04:48If you relax your hand, it will fall open.
0:04:48 > 0:04:52When a bat relaxes its claws, it does the opposite and clenches up.
0:04:52 > 0:04:55So even when asleep, they're in no danger of letting go.
0:04:55 > 0:04:58And they can hang on for hours.
0:04:58 > 0:05:01Whilst me, on the other hand...
0:05:01 > 0:05:03I think I'm about to go. Argh!
0:05:05 > 0:05:07Whoa!
0:05:08 > 0:05:10Whoo!
0:05:11 > 0:05:15That is a very long way down.
0:05:15 > 0:05:20Imagine being able to hang upside down for hours on end. Incredible!
0:05:20 > 0:05:24How are Nicola and Michelle getting on with their big bat art?
0:05:24 > 0:05:26We've got our tracing drawn out on a massive scale.
0:05:26 > 0:05:29And now it's time to work on the stencils.
0:05:29 > 0:05:33I've got the bat's head. You might notice Steve's face is missing.
0:05:33 > 0:05:36And that's because I've got Steve right here.
0:05:36 > 0:05:38It's stuck to a piece of card so it's nice and sturdy
0:05:38 > 0:05:40for when we spray-paint it later.
0:05:40 > 0:05:44First, it's all about cutting out the shapes.
0:05:44 > 0:05:48Don't try any of the techniques you see in our big art.
0:05:48 > 0:05:52But for now, it's Doodle time with Nicola.
0:05:52 > 0:05:57This is the Deadly Doodle of the wrinkle-lipped bat.
0:05:57 > 0:05:58We'll start with his head.
0:05:58 > 0:06:01On an angle, draw an oval shape
0:06:01 > 0:06:04with a slightly smaller one inside.
0:06:06 > 0:06:08Two leaf shapes for the ears
0:06:08 > 0:06:11and a heart shape for the nose.
0:06:12 > 0:06:16And two smaller circles for the eyes.
0:06:16 > 0:06:21Its body is an upside-down house shape.
0:06:21 > 0:06:25Two straight lines with a point reconnecting to the body.
0:06:25 > 0:06:31His feet are two U shapes right down there at the bottom.
0:06:31 > 0:06:33And now we're onto the wings. Draw two lines
0:06:33 > 0:06:35coming out of the top of his head
0:06:35 > 0:06:38with a small circle on the outside of each one.
0:06:38 > 0:06:41Now we need an arch over the top for his wing.
0:06:41 > 0:06:44Using four rigid lines,
0:06:44 > 0:06:47create that arch on both sides.
0:06:47 > 0:06:51Add three arches from the end of the wing.
0:06:51 > 0:06:55One, two, three. Same on both sides.
0:06:55 > 0:06:58And then we just need some guidelines for those fingers.
0:06:58 > 0:07:03We join this point to this circle with some rigid lines.
0:07:05 > 0:07:10And this top one just disappears off into the wing.
0:07:10 > 0:07:11We're ready for the marker pen.
0:07:11 > 0:07:15Redefine those lines on both sides
0:07:15 > 0:07:17and then draw a line down the centre
0:07:17 > 0:07:21with some texture on the inside of his ear.
0:07:21 > 0:07:24An arch across the top of his head,
0:07:24 > 0:07:27then complete the rest of his head from the bottom of the ear
0:07:27 > 0:07:29all the way around to the bottom of the other ear.
0:07:29 > 0:07:34At the bottom of his face, add on an elongated U shape for his chin
0:07:34 > 0:07:37with a few little hairs.
0:07:37 > 0:07:40Above that chin, you need to raise the line slightly
0:07:40 > 0:07:43and come back down again to create his lip.
0:07:43 > 0:07:47I'll add a thicker line there to show off the inside.
0:07:47 > 0:07:49And then most importantly,
0:07:49 > 0:07:52a wiggly line all the way over the top of his lip,
0:07:52 > 0:07:53and then on to the nose.
0:07:53 > 0:07:56First, fill in the top, the bridge of his nose,
0:07:56 > 0:08:01and then the underneath and then give him two nostrils.
0:08:01 > 0:08:02Now we're onto the eyes.
0:08:02 > 0:08:05Go around those circles until you get a small circle in the centre.
0:08:05 > 0:08:08Fill in the top of the head and the bottom of the wing.
0:08:08 > 0:08:12Take that head all the way round, underneath the chin.
0:08:14 > 0:08:18And the second part of his body is just redefining those lines,
0:08:18 > 0:08:21but being a little bit more organic.
0:08:21 > 0:08:24For his feet, draw the sides in first of all
0:08:24 > 0:08:30and then four quick lines up through the centre to create his toes.
0:08:32 > 0:08:34Just need to do the wings.
0:08:34 > 0:08:38Follow these lines all the way up and around that circle.
0:08:38 > 0:08:40Back down until you meet the ear again.
0:08:40 > 0:08:42Then, on to the rest of his wing,
0:08:42 > 0:08:45fill in the lines you've already done,
0:08:45 > 0:08:48and then very carefully,
0:08:48 > 0:08:52double up on them to create those spindly fingers.
0:08:57 > 0:08:59Almost done.
0:08:59 > 0:09:03All we need to do now is fill in those arches to complete the wing.
0:09:03 > 0:09:06And there he is. Rub out the lines and he's finished.
0:09:10 > 0:09:15There we go. Your very deadly wrinkle-lipped bat.
0:09:15 > 0:09:17That bat looks so realistic.
0:09:17 > 0:09:19Here's how some of you got on with this doodle
0:09:19 > 0:09:23when the Deadly artists went to Glasgow on a Deadly Day Out.
0:09:25 > 0:09:27ALL: Deadly!
0:09:27 > 0:09:31- I'm Brian.- I'm Jack. - BOTH: And this is our Deadly Doodle.
0:09:31 > 0:09:36I'm pleased with my Doodle. It's quite good and it was a challenge.
0:09:36 > 0:09:39My name is Jamie and this is my Deadly Doodle.
0:09:39 > 0:09:41My favourite bits are the wings.
0:09:41 > 0:09:43They've got a lot of detail on.
0:09:43 > 0:09:45I never would have been able to draw them.
0:09:45 > 0:09:49Your bats were cool. Keep practising your doodles.
0:09:49 > 0:09:52Let's get back to the Deadly Art studio and our big art.
0:09:52 > 0:09:55All our stencils are cut out, and this is the fun bit.
0:09:55 > 0:09:57It's time to start spray-painting.
0:09:57 > 0:09:59Michelle and Nicola are professionals
0:09:59 > 0:10:03and are wearing protective masks when they use their spray paints.
0:10:03 > 0:10:08- Looks great!- I'm looking forward to seeing the big art bat colony.
0:10:08 > 0:10:11But first, it's time for Michelle with a Deadly DIY.
0:10:11 > 0:10:14I'm going to show you how to create
0:10:14 > 0:10:17this beautiful piece of bat artwork using stencils.
0:10:17 > 0:10:21I'm starting off with a large piece of blue card
0:10:21 > 0:10:22which will act as the sky.
0:10:22 > 0:10:23To set the scene a bit more,
0:10:23 > 0:10:26I've cut out a large circle from some white paper
0:10:26 > 0:10:28and I'm going to stick this on for the moon.
0:10:30 > 0:10:32To give it a bit more depth and texture,
0:10:32 > 0:10:34I'm going to use some dark paint.
0:10:34 > 0:10:36Just put a bit on here.
0:10:36 > 0:10:41And with a sponge, I'm going to dab on it like this.
0:10:41 > 0:10:44This really helps to make it look a bit more realistic.
0:10:44 > 0:10:48OK, that's the moon sorted, now on to the bat stencil.
0:10:48 > 0:10:51This is really simple to make.
0:10:51 > 0:10:54I've got a piece of card here and on it, with my pen,
0:10:54 > 0:10:57I'm just drawing a large M shape.
0:10:57 > 0:10:58And at the bottom of the M shape,
0:10:58 > 0:11:02I'm just joining it all up with some curvy lines.
0:11:03 > 0:11:07So now, with a scalpel, I'm just cutting around it.
0:11:07 > 0:11:09I'm following the lines I've drawn with my scalpel.
0:11:09 > 0:11:11Now, scalpels are very dangerous,
0:11:11 > 0:11:13so make sure you get an adult to help you.
0:11:13 > 0:11:19Very carefully going around, just scoring along that final line.
0:11:19 > 0:11:22And then the inside will pop out really easily.
0:11:22 > 0:11:24There you have your bat stencil.
0:11:24 > 0:11:27Now, I want my bats to be flying across the moon,
0:11:27 > 0:11:29then sweeping around as if they're coming towards me.
0:11:29 > 0:11:34So for that effect, you need three different-sized stencils.
0:11:34 > 0:11:37We've got a small one for the bats that are the furthest away,
0:11:37 > 0:11:41and then a medium-sized one as the colony of bats gets closer,
0:11:41 > 0:11:46and then you end up with your large one when they're in front of you.
0:11:46 > 0:11:49I'm going to start with the small bats.
0:11:49 > 0:11:51As you can see, we've got four of them.
0:11:51 > 0:11:54And it just makes it quicker as you're going along.
0:11:54 > 0:11:56Michelle is using blue paint for her small bats,
0:11:56 > 0:11:58brown paint for the medium-sized bats
0:11:58 > 0:12:01and a darker brown for the large ones.
0:12:01 > 0:12:05Great. And for the final bat, I've grabbed Nicola's doodle from earlier.
0:12:05 > 0:12:10It's been coloured in and now I'm going to stick it right at the front.
0:12:10 > 0:12:13And there you have an amazing Deadly bat DIY.
0:12:13 > 0:12:16That's totally brilliant! Give it a go.
0:12:16 > 0:12:19Back to our bonkers bat cave artwork.
0:12:23 > 0:12:25It looks like they've reached the finish line.
0:12:27 > 0:12:32Because we used stencils, we've got a sharp, bold, graphic image.
0:12:32 > 0:12:33And it really works.
0:12:33 > 0:12:36And we've got Steve in a cave, eye-to-eye with a bat.
0:12:36 > 0:12:39That is what Deadly Art is all about.
0:12:39 > 0:12:42Let's stop hanging around and get ready for the big reveal.
0:12:42 > 0:12:46I asked the Deadly Art team to recreate these killer shots
0:12:46 > 0:12:48and turn them into art.
0:12:48 > 0:12:51So let's take a look at the finished result.
0:12:54 > 0:12:56Oh, the air is thick with bats!
0:12:56 > 0:12:59I love the different-coloured silhouettes.
0:12:59 > 0:13:04And you can see the strain as I hang there in the darkness.
0:13:05 > 0:13:10And my toes dangling tantalisingly over eternal darkness.
0:13:10 > 0:13:11Terrifying!
0:13:13 > 0:13:16Those stencils sum up how the bats pour out of that cave.
0:13:16 > 0:13:18They just seem to go on for ever.
0:13:20 > 0:13:23That one big bat with its burning red eye
0:13:23 > 0:13:26and those huge fangs looks terrifying!
0:13:26 > 0:13:29Art doesn't get any deadlier than this.
0:13:30 > 0:13:33That was a truly sublime work of art.
0:13:33 > 0:13:35Make sure you try the Doodle and the DIY
0:13:35 > 0:13:39and we'll see you next time for more Deadly Art.
