0:00:02 > 0:00:03This is Deadly Art!
0:00:07 > 0:00:11I'm lucky enough to travel the world tracking deadly animals.
0:00:13 > 0:00:16But in this show, my team of artists take my killer moment...
0:00:19 > 0:00:21..and turn it into art.
0:00:21 > 0:00:26And we'll reveal another unique creation.
0:00:26 > 0:00:28Along the way, you'll get to pick up some tips,
0:00:28 > 0:00:31tricks and techniques so you can make some art yourself.
0:00:33 > 0:00:37This is no ordinary art show. This is Deadly Art!
0:00:40 > 0:00:41Coming up on Deadly Art...
0:00:41 > 0:00:44I go diving in the remarkable reefs of Borneo,
0:00:44 > 0:00:46with today's deadly predator.
0:00:46 > 0:00:50How will our art team get on with today's killer moment artwork?
0:00:50 > 0:00:53- Looks fantastic!- And we'll show you another Deadly Doodle.
0:00:57 > 0:01:03Today's predator is feared by small fish and also sometimes by divers.
0:01:03 > 0:01:06Because of their gnashers, they can bite through their prey
0:01:06 > 0:01:10in a single mouthful, and perhaps even savage a finger.
0:01:10 > 0:01:12This is the barracuda.
0:01:12 > 0:01:16They can travel at 43 kilometres an hour, which makes them
0:01:16 > 0:01:17one of the fastest fish.
0:01:17 > 0:01:21They have fabulous eyesight and a speedy strike,
0:01:21 > 0:01:24which is essential when you're going after fast moving fish.
0:01:24 > 0:01:27But they're at their most sensational in a shoal,
0:01:27 > 0:01:29and that's what we're going to see today.
0:01:30 > 0:01:33Over to the Deadly Art studio to meet today's team.
0:01:35 > 0:01:37I'm Nicola. I'm an ice sculptor,
0:01:37 > 0:01:40a sand sculptor,
0:01:40 > 0:01:42and a power tool queen.
0:01:45 > 0:01:48Hey, I'm Mike! I'm a cartoon artist and I'm up for today's Deadly Art!
0:01:48 > 0:01:51Nicola and Mike are representing the Deadly Art team,
0:01:51 > 0:01:53who are up for a challenge,
0:01:53 > 0:01:57and here are some killer shots to inspire today's Big Art.
0:01:57 > 0:02:00Barracuda have two very different kinds of teeth.
0:02:00 > 0:02:04Two long thin ones at the front to ensnare their prey,
0:02:04 > 0:02:08and needle sharp ones at the back to make sure it can't get away.
0:02:11 > 0:02:13Look at his shimmery, shiny skin. It's so beautiful.
0:02:13 > 0:02:18The barracuda is on Steve's Deadly 60. We mustn't forget the teeth.
0:02:18 > 0:02:21- We thought fabrics and dyes would be great for this one.- Yep.
0:02:21 > 0:02:23- So, shall we do it?- Let's do it!
0:02:23 > 0:02:26Time for some more Deadly Art!
0:02:28 > 0:02:31Rather than painting on a canvas, we're going to use this chiffon.
0:02:31 > 0:02:34It's a very fine material, but the colours
0:02:34 > 0:02:38are going to be far more vibrant because the fabric is so transparent.
0:02:38 > 0:02:42All you'll see is the colour, and because this is our Big Art,
0:02:42 > 0:02:46we're using three chiffon panels to create one massive killer moment.
0:02:46 > 0:02:49'We'll leave Nicola and Mike sketching out their barracudas.
0:02:49 > 0:02:51'Now, on Deadly 60, my team and I
0:02:51 > 0:02:53'were on the lookout
0:02:53 > 0:02:55'for deadly oceanic animals in Borneo.
0:02:55 > 0:02:56'I couldn't believe the size
0:02:56 > 0:02:59'of this incredible barracuda shoal.'
0:02:59 > 0:03:02This is absolutely dazzling!
0:03:02 > 0:03:07One of the meanest, fastest,
0:03:07 > 0:03:10fiercest fish in the sea!
0:03:10 > 0:03:13And I've never seen so many of them.
0:03:13 > 0:03:14Ho-ho-ho!
0:03:22 > 0:03:25That is unbelievable!
0:03:25 > 0:03:29Absolutely surrounded by them!
0:03:47 > 0:03:50I've never seen anything like it!
0:03:50 > 0:03:54They're surrounding me in a circle!
0:03:57 > 0:03:59Spinning around and around.
0:04:01 > 0:04:04This is absolutely dazzling!
0:04:08 > 0:04:10'To see so many barracuda at once
0:04:10 > 0:04:12was a once in a lifetime experience,
0:04:12 > 0:04:16'if unnerving. All those sharp teeth!
0:04:16 > 0:04:19Time to see some brilliance in our art studio.
0:04:19 > 0:04:21Mike and Nicola are waxing and colouring.
0:04:21 > 0:04:25I'm using wax to create a barrier around the outline of the barracuda.
0:04:25 > 0:04:31This will stop the dye from bleeding over the edges, and later,
0:04:31 > 0:04:36when we remove the wax, we'll have a lovely crisp, white outline.
0:04:36 > 0:04:38Don't try any of our Big Art techniques at home.
0:04:38 > 0:04:40This is the tail.
0:04:40 > 0:04:43Within this wax barrier, I'm blending two shades of dye
0:04:43 > 0:04:46to create some nice, shimmery definition.
0:04:46 > 0:04:48As you can see, when I go along the edge,
0:04:48 > 0:04:51the colour doesn't bleed into the painting.
0:04:51 > 0:04:54'Using wax in art is just great!
0:04:54 > 0:04:57'I think the colours are going to be outstanding.
0:04:57 > 0:04:59Nicola's going to take a break.
0:04:59 > 0:05:02She's going to show you another Deadly Doodle.
0:05:02 > 0:05:06I'm going to show you how to draw this deadly barracuda.
0:05:06 > 0:05:11We'll start off with some simple lines and shapes as a guide.
0:05:11 > 0:05:16Draw a big curve all the way around your page.
0:05:16 > 0:05:19Double up to create a horn shape.
0:05:20 > 0:05:24Then split that in two, tapering off at this end.
0:05:24 > 0:05:31Make a V for the jaw, a circle for his eye, and give him some fins.
0:05:31 > 0:05:37A big one up here, one in the centre, one down here...
0:05:38 > 0:05:42..two here, and then his tail is a backward C shape,
0:05:42 > 0:05:46and turn that into a moustache.
0:05:46 > 0:05:51Now we're ready to go in with our marker pen.
0:05:51 > 0:05:52We'll start with the eye.
0:05:52 > 0:05:56Make a dark shadow over the top of the eye,
0:05:56 > 0:05:58to make him look extra menacing.
0:06:00 > 0:06:05Draw in the eye. Give him a pupil,
0:06:05 > 0:06:10some character lines, and then raise his eyebrow.
0:06:10 > 0:06:15Then redefine the entire body with a big strong line all the way around.
0:06:17 > 0:06:20Give him two gills.
0:06:22 > 0:06:25And draw in those fins.
0:06:26 > 0:06:30At this stage, add in some extra shading for definition.
0:06:33 > 0:06:35Redefine that tail.
0:06:36 > 0:06:40And because the barracuda has that beautiful, shimmery skin,
0:06:40 > 0:06:43you can add in some reflection lines here and there,
0:06:43 > 0:06:47including that centre line all the way down the middle.
0:06:47 > 0:06:50Now we're onto his jaw. This is really important,
0:06:50 > 0:06:52cos it has to look extra strong.
0:06:52 > 0:06:56I'm going to make an elongated S-shape,
0:06:56 > 0:06:58and then strengthen up the bottom part.
0:07:01 > 0:07:04Double up on the top part of his jaw,
0:07:04 > 0:07:07with some shadow for the inside of his mouth.
0:07:07 > 0:07:10And the barracuda has two fearsome teeth
0:07:10 > 0:07:12right at the end of his bottom jaw.
0:07:12 > 0:07:14Fill those in.
0:07:14 > 0:07:17Then continue all the way up into his mouth,
0:07:17 > 0:07:19and the same on the top.
0:07:20 > 0:07:24And there you have your deadly barracuda Doodle.
0:07:24 > 0:07:27Loving that barracuda! Let's see how some of you got on when you visited
0:07:27 > 0:07:30the Deadly Art tent, on the Deadly Day Out in Glasgow.
0:07:30 > 0:07:33Are we ready? ALL: Yes!
0:07:33 > 0:07:37Draw the front part of the circle, so all the way around like that.
0:07:37 > 0:07:40Fill in this line, all the way through,
0:07:40 > 0:07:43skipping out your fin. And taper it off to the end.
0:07:44 > 0:07:46ALL: Deadly!
0:07:46 > 0:07:49ALL: Here's our Deadly Doodles!
0:07:49 > 0:07:52I've done a doodle of a barracuda fish!
0:07:52 > 0:07:57First we started with basic lines and then we added in the detail.
0:07:57 > 0:07:59This is my Deadly Doodle! I've drawn a barracuda,
0:07:59 > 0:08:01and I'm very pleased with it.
0:08:01 > 0:08:06My favourite bits were the mouth there and that fin there!
0:08:06 > 0:08:10Great barracudas! And it proves that all of you can Doodle too!
0:08:10 > 0:08:14Now, let's get back to the Deadly Art studio and our Big Art.
0:08:14 > 0:08:17At the bottom of our ocean here, we have our coral reef.
0:08:17 > 0:08:20As we all know, coral reefs come in amazing colours.
0:08:20 > 0:08:22We've got some gorgeous greens and blues,
0:08:22 > 0:08:25and here we've got our vibrant reds and oranges.
0:08:25 > 0:08:29It looks amazing already, but we can add a little bit of magic,
0:08:29 > 0:08:31- which is simply some rock salt. - 'What?!'
0:08:31 > 0:08:36Do a little sprinkle over our coral bed,
0:08:36 > 0:08:42and as it dries, it absorbs all those colours. Now on this canvas...
0:08:42 > 0:08:45my rock salt's been drying already.
0:08:45 > 0:08:50And if I scrape away, it'll reveal some amazing textures.
0:08:51 > 0:08:52Looks fantastic!
0:08:52 > 0:08:57The coral looks sensational! Now, Mike's got a superb Deadly DIY.
0:08:57 > 0:09:01I will most definitely be making this one myself.
0:09:01 > 0:09:03This has got to be one of the coolest
0:09:03 > 0:09:04DIY makes we've ever had!
0:09:04 > 0:09:08It's a barracuda hat, and look! It's biting my head.
0:09:08 > 0:09:10And, it's easy to make.
0:09:10 > 0:09:13All you need is a piece of craft foam.
0:09:13 > 0:09:15You can get this from any craft store.
0:09:15 > 0:09:19We're going to start by drawing out a stocking shape. A big curve...
0:09:25 > 0:09:27..and another big curve...
0:09:29 > 0:09:34..and on the top, we're going to add a triangle for the top of his mouth.
0:09:34 > 0:09:36Now, we just have to cut it out.
0:09:36 > 0:09:39'Be careful when you use scissors.'
0:09:43 > 0:09:46That's your first piece cut out. Now, you've got half your fish.
0:09:46 > 0:09:50So you're going to need two of those to glue together,
0:09:50 > 0:09:52This is where you need to add some fins.
0:09:52 > 0:09:54As you can see, we've got some side fins here,
0:09:54 > 0:09:57we've got a dorsal fin up here and we've got a tail fin.
0:09:57 > 0:10:00We've got those pieces cut out. We've also got the eyelid,
0:10:00 > 0:10:04which is another triangle. We've also got a polystyrene ball.
0:10:04 > 0:10:06You can get these from any craft store.
0:10:06 > 0:10:08These are going to be our eyes.
0:10:08 > 0:10:12When you glue those pieces together, you can move on to your next stage.
0:10:13 > 0:10:16So you can see, you've glued the upper lip on,
0:10:16 > 0:10:20you've glued the eyelid, the eye, two fins, and you've also made sure
0:10:20 > 0:10:25not to glue the mouth, cos we want that to open really wide like that.
0:10:25 > 0:10:28So now we're going to add in a few extra fins.
0:10:28 > 0:10:32The tail fin, which is like a giant blue moustache.
0:10:32 > 0:10:36We need to glue our tail fin in between our two pieces of foam.
0:10:36 > 0:10:40'You can use craft glue, but it takes a little longer to dry.'
0:10:40 > 0:10:43Now we're gluing the side fins.
0:10:43 > 0:10:46Make sure they're even on both sides. Now, dorsal fin.
0:10:46 > 0:10:48Once that's dried, put that to the side.
0:10:48 > 0:10:50Now we can work on the bottom jaw.
0:10:50 > 0:10:54That's this shape right here. It looks like a tiny little fish.
0:10:54 > 0:10:57We've got one on each side.
0:10:57 > 0:11:00To get two of them, get a missing eye shape.
0:11:00 > 0:11:01It's like a long rugby ball.
0:11:01 > 0:11:05So, we've got one of those right here.
0:11:05 > 0:11:09When you fit all three of those pieces together and glue it,
0:11:09 > 0:11:10you get a fish-shaped boat.
0:11:10 > 0:11:12So just fit that...
0:11:13 > 0:11:14..over our fish.
0:11:17 > 0:11:19And glue it so that his mouth is really wide open.
0:11:22 > 0:11:25And you can see our barracuda is really taking shape.
0:11:25 > 0:11:27He's looking awesome!
0:11:27 > 0:11:30Next thing we want to do is add some character.
0:11:30 > 0:11:35So, we're going to draw in some pupils. Two C-shapes.
0:11:35 > 0:11:37Makes him look really angry.
0:11:39 > 0:11:43Colour that in. Same again on the other side.
0:11:43 > 0:11:45All right, he's looking great!
0:11:45 > 0:11:49For that barracuda smile, we need to add in those deadly teeth!
0:11:49 > 0:11:51So, for that...
0:11:52 > 0:11:55..I've got a big pile of foam teeth.
0:11:56 > 0:12:00With a little bit of glue, just start sticking them all on.
0:12:04 > 0:12:07It's like barracuda dentistry.
0:12:08 > 0:12:13And there you have your deadly barracuda hat! A-a-a-a-agh!
0:12:13 > 0:12:15I'm not sure they'd attack humans,
0:12:15 > 0:12:18but an amazing DIY to impress your friends.
0:12:18 > 0:12:22Back to our chiffon barracuda artwork,
0:12:22 > 0:12:24and Nicola's painting the shoal.
0:12:24 > 0:12:27We saw Steve earlier with that incredible shoal of barracuda,
0:12:27 > 0:12:30so that must feature in our painting.
0:12:30 > 0:12:33Same as before, wax outline and fill in the shape.
0:12:33 > 0:12:36Don't even attempt this at home.
0:12:36 > 0:12:39The heat from this iron lifts the wax onto this piece of paper,
0:12:39 > 0:12:42revealing a lovely white line on our chiffon.
0:12:42 > 0:12:45Mike has been trained to create today's artwork.
0:12:45 > 0:12:48Look at that. It's fantastic. Nearly done.
0:12:48 > 0:12:50Now all I have to do is put it back on the frame.
0:12:50 > 0:12:54- The barracuda art looks just about finished to me!- Wow!
0:12:54 > 0:12:58You know what I love? We've captured these two deadly barracudas
0:12:58 > 0:12:59in the foreground.
0:12:59 > 0:13:02But we haven't forgotten about that shoal in the background.
0:13:02 > 0:13:07With all these elements combined, it makes a beautiful composition.
0:13:07 > 0:13:08Love it!
0:13:08 > 0:13:11It's nearly time for the Big Reveal.
0:13:11 > 0:13:15I asked the Deadly Art team to recreate this killer moment.
0:13:15 > 0:13:18Let's take a look at the finished result.
0:13:18 > 0:13:22I didn't believe that a piece of art could sum up that experience,
0:13:22 > 0:13:24but this really has.
0:13:24 > 0:13:29The two huge barracuda just seem to be hovering over the coral,
0:13:29 > 0:13:32and up there in the distance, silhouetted against the sun,
0:13:32 > 0:13:35is that glorious circling vortex of barracuda.
0:13:35 > 0:13:38The different streaks of blue look perfect for the sea.
0:13:38 > 0:13:43And all those running colours make this a perfect wild watery world.
0:13:43 > 0:13:45Art doesn't get deadlier than this!
0:13:45 > 0:13:47What an incredible creation!
0:13:47 > 0:13:49Make sure you try the Doodle and DIY,
0:13:49 > 0:13:52and we'll see you next time for more Deadly Art!
