0:00:07 > 0:00:10I'm lucky enough to travel the world, tracking deadly animals.

0:00:13 > 0:00:17But in this show, my team of artists take my killer moments,

0:00:19 > 0:00:21and turn it into art.

0:00:21 > 0:00:24We'll reveal another UNIQUE creation.

0:00:24 > 0:00:29Along the way, you'll get to pick up some tips , tricks and techniques

0:00:29 > 0:00:31so YOU can make some art yourself.

0:00:31 > 0:00:34This is no ordinary art show.

0:00:34 > 0:00:37THIS is Deadly Art.

0:00:41 > 0:00:42'Coming up on Deadly Art,

0:00:42 > 0:00:44'I go sky high to get close

0:00:44 > 0:00:47'to a deadly winged predator. He's right there!

0:00:47 > 0:00:50'Our art team produce an outstanding work of art...'

0:00:50 > 0:00:53These guys are going to look REALLY powerful.

0:00:53 > 0:00:57And we'll show you another Deadly Doodle.

0:00:57 > 0:00:59When it comes to winged hunters,

0:00:59 > 0:01:01it takes a lot to beat today's deadly animal.

0:01:01 > 0:01:04The Black Eagle.

0:01:04 > 0:01:06With a wingspan of up to two metres,

0:01:06 > 0:01:08which is longer than giraffe's neck

0:01:08 > 0:01:10and longer than I am tall,

0:01:10 > 0:01:12this bird is absolutely massive.

0:01:12 > 0:01:14Add to that set of huge talons,

0:01:14 > 0:01:17which are as sharp as any kitchen knife,

0:01:17 > 0:01:21and extraordinary eyesight, able to spot prey from miles away,

0:01:21 > 0:01:22this is an incredible predator.

0:01:22 > 0:01:25Time to meet today's art team.

0:01:25 > 0:01:29As ever, they're ready and waiting in the Deadly Art studio.

0:01:29 > 0:01:33I'm Michelle, and I just LOVE working with different materials.

0:01:33 > 0:01:35I'm Jo. I'm a painter,

0:01:35 > 0:01:37and a general mess maker.

0:01:37 > 0:01:41Michelle and Jo are representing the Deadly Art team,

0:01:41 > 0:01:43who are always up for a challenge.

0:01:43 > 0:01:46And this is the killer moment for their Big Art.

0:01:46 > 0:01:50Most birds of prey are solitary for the vast majority of their lives,

0:01:50 > 0:01:53but Black Eagles will work together as a team.

0:01:53 > 0:01:57One distracts the prey, one creeps up on it from a different direction.

0:01:57 > 0:01:59Deadly teamwork.

0:02:01 > 0:02:03Beautiful feathers, but deadly talons.

0:02:03 > 0:02:05No painting THIS time!

0:02:05 > 0:02:08We're going to three dimensional.

0:02:08 > 0:02:11Time for some more Deadly Art.

0:02:15 > 0:02:17Hey, Michelle!

0:02:18 > 0:02:22That looks like great fun!

0:02:22 > 0:02:25I fixed these brackets to the desks.

0:02:25 > 0:02:28These will act as an anchor for the armature of our birds.

0:02:28 > 0:02:32The armature is just a metal wire, to show the outline of the body.

0:02:32 > 0:02:35Once this is fixed down, we'll start building it up to make it more 3D.

0:02:37 > 0:02:40We'll leave Jo and Michelle making wire frames.

0:02:40 > 0:02:43'On Deadly 60, we visited South Africa.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46'There was something pretty deadly heading my way.'

0:02:46 > 0:02:52Look at this. He's folding his wings. Stooping.

0:02:52 > 0:02:54Coming CRASHING into LAND!

0:02:54 > 0:02:56WOW!

0:02:56 > 0:02:59That was EXTRAORDINARY!

0:02:59 > 0:03:01Keep your face away.

0:03:01 > 0:03:04Obviously, this isn't a wild eagle.

0:03:04 > 0:03:08This is Rourke. He was rescued as a very young chick,

0:03:08 > 0:03:11and been living for the last five years in good human company.

0:03:11 > 0:03:14He is an utterly magnificent predator.

0:03:14 > 0:03:17To see why, you don't have to look further

0:03:17 > 0:03:20than those talons. Look at those.

0:03:20 > 0:03:22Each one is like a long,

0:03:22 > 0:03:25curved kitchen knife of a weapon.

0:03:25 > 0:03:27Doug, his owner, has assured me

0:03:27 > 0:03:29if I wasn't wearing this thick leather glove,

0:03:29 > 0:03:33he could punch that talon through my hand, and out the other side.

0:03:33 > 0:03:36They are magnificent.

0:03:36 > 0:03:37'The eyes.'

0:03:37 > 0:03:39That talons, the beak,

0:03:39 > 0:03:41are all very much things that

0:03:41 > 0:03:44any eagle has, and can use to hunt.

0:03:44 > 0:03:46Something unique about the Black Eagle

0:03:46 > 0:03:49is the way that the male and female, the pair,

0:03:49 > 0:03:50will hunt together.

0:03:51 > 0:03:53'Quite a feat for our Big Art.

0:03:53 > 0:03:56'Back to Jo and Michelle.'

0:03:56 > 0:03:58We've done our 2D outline,

0:03:58 > 0:04:01and then we built it out to 3D,

0:04:01 > 0:04:04so, now we're going to fill in the gaps with chicken wire.

0:04:04 > 0:04:07As we're bulking these eagles out,

0:04:07 > 0:04:10it's important we get the dimensions JUST right.

0:04:13 > 0:04:16These guys are going to look REALLY powerful.

0:04:16 > 0:04:18Those eagles are bulking up nicely.

0:04:18 > 0:04:20Fancy drawing your OWN Black Eagle?

0:04:20 > 0:04:23Here's Michelle, with a Deadly Doodle.

0:04:23 > 0:04:28I'll show you how to draw and paint one of these Black Eagles.

0:04:28 > 0:04:31First of all, with a white wax pencil,

0:04:31 > 0:04:34draw a large circle at the top of your page,

0:04:34 > 0:04:36for the eagles' head.

0:04:37 > 0:04:39Once you have your large circle,

0:04:39 > 0:04:42draw an eye in the centre.

0:04:42 > 0:04:47Inside that circle, you're going to do another series of circles.

0:04:47 > 0:04:50Coming off this eye,

0:04:50 > 0:04:53I'm going to a semi-circle shape

0:04:53 > 0:04:56at the very bottom of the eye,

0:04:56 > 0:04:57where the pupil is,

0:04:57 > 0:05:00I'm going to draw a vertical line down,

0:05:00 > 0:05:03and, like a pie shape coming out of the head.

0:05:03 > 0:05:04This will act as our deadly beak.

0:05:04 > 0:05:08Once you've drawn the beak, I've drawn another curvy line,

0:05:08 > 0:05:12all the way around, to make sure we get that sharp end.

0:05:12 > 0:05:14Then we're going to fill in

0:05:14 > 0:05:17a few little details.

0:05:21 > 0:05:24I'll put some white feather markings

0:05:24 > 0:05:27around the head.

0:05:27 > 0:05:29Once you have the head,

0:05:29 > 0:05:30the rest is really simple.

0:05:30 > 0:05:34Follow the shape of the top of the head all the way along,

0:05:34 > 0:05:37and then do a nice, smooth circular line

0:05:37 > 0:05:40right down to the bottom of your page.

0:05:40 > 0:05:43Once you get to the bottom, about a quarter of the way up,

0:05:43 > 0:05:46I'm drawing a squashed C shape,

0:05:46 > 0:05:50and then I'm going to draw a line down, and out.

0:05:50 > 0:05:53I'm going to draw another large C shape.

0:05:53 > 0:05:57As you can see, it really helps define the eagle's body.

0:05:59 > 0:06:03That's it with the white crayon. Next, I've got my yellow,

0:06:03 > 0:06:07around the outside of the circles you drew for the eyes,

0:06:07 > 0:06:09I'm going to colour it all in yellow.

0:06:09 > 0:06:12What I'm doing as I'm colouring in,

0:06:12 > 0:06:16is just leaving a few bits.

0:06:16 > 0:06:19You'll see why later on.

0:06:19 > 0:06:22Next, I'm going to colour in my beak in yellow.

0:06:22 > 0:06:24Once that's all coloured in,

0:06:24 > 0:06:26all that's left is to get your black ink,

0:06:26 > 0:06:30and simply wash all over the page.

0:06:30 > 0:06:34Painting the doodle REALLY brings it to life.

0:06:34 > 0:06:38As you wash over, the wax crayon will resist the ink,

0:06:38 > 0:06:40which means all those white lines,

0:06:40 > 0:06:43and all the yellow, will pop out.

0:06:43 > 0:06:46It's a really cool effect.

0:06:46 > 0:06:47Be very careful with black ink.

0:06:47 > 0:06:50And get permission before you use it.

0:06:52 > 0:06:55There you have it. An AMAZING Black Eagle.

0:06:55 > 0:06:57Good work, Michelle.

0:06:57 > 0:07:00Now, we went to Port Talbot, in Wales, on a deadly day out.

0:07:00 > 0:07:02Here's how some of YOU did, in the Deadly Art tent.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05ALL: This is my Deadly Doodle!

0:07:05 > 0:07:08I liked drawing the eye, cos there's so many circle.

0:07:08 > 0:07:10And drawing the wings, as well.

0:07:10 > 0:07:12I liked drawing the belly.

0:07:12 > 0:07:14It looks like he's rumbling.

0:07:14 > 0:07:18I liked drawing the beak, cos he bites the animals.

0:07:18 > 0:07:20I liked drawing the head,

0:07:20 > 0:07:23cos he's very funky, and he's fat.

0:07:23 > 0:07:25I love eagles,

0:07:25 > 0:07:27and I really enjoyed drawing this.

0:07:27 > 0:07:29After I finished drawing it,

0:07:29 > 0:07:31I thought it looked absolutely deadly.

0:07:31 > 0:07:34- ALL: Deadly Art! - Great Black Eagles!

0:07:34 > 0:07:37See how easy it is to draw your favourite deadly animal?

0:07:37 > 0:07:39Let's get back to the Deadly Art studio.

0:07:39 > 0:07:41Michelle's onto the wings.

0:07:41 > 0:07:45The Black Eagle has an AMAZING two metre wingspan.

0:07:45 > 0:07:48If THIS is just one of the wings, with two, our eagle will be huge.

0:07:50 > 0:07:52The Black Eagle has amazing black feathers,

0:07:52 > 0:07:56so we want to give our sculpture a unique texture.

0:07:56 > 0:07:58I've cut black bin bags into strips,

0:07:58 > 0:08:00and this is the good bit.

0:08:00 > 0:08:03I'm going to lay them over the wire mesh,

0:08:03 > 0:08:06and melt them to create a feather effect.

0:08:06 > 0:08:10Melting black bin bags is something only a professional artist can do.

0:08:10 > 0:08:13You mustn't attempt ANYTHING you see in the Big Art.

0:08:15 > 0:08:18In South Africa, being close to Black Eagle, Rourke,

0:08:18 > 0:08:20was incredible.

0:08:20 > 0:08:22'Time to see him TRULY in action.'

0:08:22 > 0:08:24There he is, right there!

0:08:27 > 0:08:29Just flying under my feet!

0:08:29 > 0:08:32We're sharing the air!

0:08:32 > 0:08:34With Rourke, the Black Eagle.

0:08:34 > 0:08:36How good is THAT?!

0:08:40 > 0:08:43He just soared right under our canopy!

0:08:43 > 0:08:46That was UNBELIEVABLE!

0:08:46 > 0:08:47Just incredible!

0:08:52 > 0:08:54OK, now the real trick

0:08:55 > 0:08:56to this paragliding lark

0:08:56 > 0:08:58is very much the same thing

0:08:58 > 0:09:01the eagle will be looking for, and that's thermals.

0:09:01 > 0:09:04A thermal is a rising current of warm air,

0:09:04 > 0:09:09which would especially come up off a dark, ploughed field,

0:09:09 > 0:09:10a big area of road.

0:09:10 > 0:09:14Just that warm air is enough to get you heading for the heavens.

0:09:14 > 0:09:19That's the weapon the Black Eagle uses to get high.

0:09:19 > 0:09:23'We're sharing the skies with a true master.

0:09:23 > 0:09:27'And Rourke is giving us a proper flying lesson.

0:09:27 > 0:09:29'Such a beautiful bird!'

0:09:29 > 0:09:32After all that excitement,

0:09:32 > 0:09:34it's time for a DIY.

0:09:34 > 0:09:38I'm going to show you how to make this amazing Black Eagle.

0:09:38 > 0:09:40I've cut out the head, and down into this point.

0:09:40 > 0:09:42I'll put that to one side.

0:09:42 > 0:09:44The most interesting thing about THIS DIY,

0:09:44 > 0:09:46is the amazing wingspan.

0:09:46 > 0:09:49I create that by making a single feather out of a lino cut.

0:09:49 > 0:09:52This stuff's really nice, soft, and easy to cut into.

0:09:52 > 0:09:55You can get it in any art shop.

0:09:55 > 0:09:58We start off by drawing the feather on.

0:09:58 > 0:10:02I'm going to go from corner to corner with a line.

0:10:02 > 0:10:07And up, with those feathery marks,

0:10:07 > 0:10:10and down with the side.

0:10:10 > 0:10:15It's going to be feathering all the way up.

0:10:17 > 0:10:19Now, I'm taking a lino-cutting tool,

0:10:19 > 0:10:21and cut along all those black lines.

0:10:23 > 0:10:26Make sure you try that technique with an adult to help you.

0:10:26 > 0:10:28So I'm cutting out all those feathery lines

0:10:28 > 0:10:33and all the bits that are left over will be printed onto the page.

0:10:33 > 0:10:35It does take some time but it's worth it in the end.

0:10:37 > 0:10:39I think that's enough cutting.

0:10:39 > 0:10:42Now I'm just going to cut around those edges using scissors.

0:10:44 > 0:10:46Take care when you use scissors.

0:10:46 > 0:10:49Just cutting around the stalk, that will give me

0:10:49 > 0:10:52something to hold onto when I start printing.

0:10:52 > 0:10:57So I'm just going to nick into the edge to create that feathery texture.

0:10:59 > 0:11:03Great. Now I'm ready to start printing.

0:11:03 > 0:11:08I've got some grey card and some water-based ink. Pop that on there.

0:11:10 > 0:11:15Just roller it out, spreading it all over my tile evenly and thinly.

0:11:15 > 0:11:21We're going to take our feather and put a nice even coat of ink over it.

0:11:21 > 0:11:29I'll pick it up by its stalk and lay it out on my card.

0:11:29 > 0:11:34I've got a clean roller just to give it a bit of pressure on the back

0:11:34 > 0:11:37and make sure I get a nice clean print.

0:11:37 > 0:11:41Wow, look at that. Printing's just like magic.

0:11:46 > 0:11:51So I'm building feather upon feather to make a section of the wing.

0:11:52 > 0:11:55Now I'm just going to cut it out.

0:11:59 > 0:12:03Doesn't that look beautiful? So this is just one section of the wing.

0:12:03 > 0:12:07I've done the same again for a middle section so I'm just going to

0:12:07 > 0:12:11stick it all together with double-sided sticky tape.

0:12:14 > 0:12:17So there we've got the left wing.

0:12:17 > 0:12:20Here's the right wing

0:12:20 > 0:12:25and the doodle from earlier, so we can piece it all together.

0:12:28 > 0:12:32And not forgetting the deadly claws which are just drawn onto yellow

0:12:32 > 0:12:38pieces of paper and now we have an amazing pair of hunting black eagles.

0:12:38 > 0:12:41Nice DIY, Jo. Back to our big art.

0:12:48 > 0:12:52I love that they're using yellow plastic bags too.

0:12:55 > 0:12:58Well, the black eagles look just about finished to me.

0:12:58 > 0:13:02I love the technique of melting the plastic onto the wire

0:13:02 > 0:13:05because of the amazing scraggy feathered effect.

0:13:05 > 0:13:08I love that they're larger than life and because we've got two

0:13:08 > 0:13:12it looks like they're hunting right here in the art studio.

0:13:12 > 0:13:15So it's nearly time for the Big Reveal.

0:13:15 > 0:13:17I asked the Deadly Art team to recreate these killer shots

0:13:17 > 0:13:23and turn them into art, so let's take a look at the finished result.

0:13:23 > 0:13:28Oh, these two eagles just dominate the Deadly Art studio.

0:13:28 > 0:13:31Imagine having those plummeting out of the sky towards you.

0:13:31 > 0:13:34The wings are spread, the talons poised to pounce

0:13:34 > 0:13:37and the flight feathers are perfectly represented

0:13:37 > 0:13:39by those melted bin bags.

0:13:39 > 0:13:43I couldn't imagine how that would work but it really has.

0:13:43 > 0:13:45Great work, team.

0:13:45 > 0:13:47What an incredible creation.

0:13:47 > 0:13:49Make sure you try the doodle and the DIY

0:13:49 > 0:13:52and we'll see you next time for more Deadly Art.

0:13:52 > 0:13:54Subtitles by Red Bee Media Ltd
