0:00:02 > 0:00:04My name is Steve Backshall and this is Deadly Art.
0:00:07 > 0:00:10I'm lucky enough to travel the world tracking deadly animals.
0:00:13 > 0:00:16In this show, my team of artists take my killer moments...
0:00:19 > 0:00:22..and turn it into art.
0:00:22 > 0:00:25'And we'll reveal another unique creation.
0:00:25 > 0:00:29'Along the way, you'll get to pick up tips, tricks and techniques
0:00:29 > 0:00:31'so you can make some art yourself.
0:00:33 > 0:00:37'This is no ordinary art show, this is Deadly Art.
0:00:40 > 0:00:42'Coming up on Deadly Art, I meet a group of predators
0:00:42 > 0:00:46'with strength, agility and incredible intelligence.'
0:00:46 > 0:00:49They're a really powerfully-built animal.
0:00:49 > 0:00:52'Our art team put together a startling work of art.'
0:00:52 > 0:00:55- They look fierce and hungry. - Hungry and deadly.
0:00:55 > 0:00:58'And we'll show you another Deadly Doodle.
0:01:00 > 0:01:02'So, what are we looking at today?'
0:01:02 > 0:01:05With its big brain and its facial expressions,
0:01:05 > 0:01:07it's perhaps not that surprising the chimpanzee
0:01:07 > 0:01:10is more closely related to humans than any other animal.
0:01:10 > 0:01:14They share an astounding 98% of our genes.
0:01:14 > 0:01:18This is the seemingly-cute chimpanzee.
0:01:18 > 0:01:21'Chimpanzees are funny, charming and often likeable,
0:01:21 > 0:01:23'but when it comes to hunting,
0:01:23 > 0:01:27'they're also one of Africa's deadliest predators.
0:01:27 > 0:01:30'Yes, they definitely have a taste for fruit, for figs,
0:01:30 > 0:01:33'for bananas, but in between, they'll also hunt meat.'
0:01:33 > 0:01:35Things like antelopes and monkeys.
0:01:35 > 0:01:40When they do, it's one of the most spine-chilling experiences.
0:01:40 > 0:01:44'So, who's taking on the Deadly Art challenge today?'
0:01:44 > 0:01:47I'm Jo, I'm a painter and a general mess-maker.
0:01:49 > 0:01:53Hey. I'm Mike. I'm a cartoon artist. And I'm up for today's Deadly Art.
0:01:53 > 0:01:55'Mike and Jo are representing the Deadly Art team,
0:01:55 > 0:01:57'who are always up for a challenge.
0:01:57 > 0:02:01'And here's the killer moment to capture in the artwork.
0:02:01 > 0:02:05'Possibly a side to chimpanzees that you haven't seen before.
0:02:05 > 0:02:08'When the hunt begins, they move at an incredible speed.
0:02:08 > 0:02:11'Using their terrific teamwork, they are formidable hunters.'
0:02:11 > 0:02:14His teeth are fierce. I always thought they were quite cute.
0:02:14 > 0:02:16I didn't realise how powerful they are.
0:02:16 > 0:02:19We've got to make sure we show their deadly side today
0:02:19 > 0:02:21and their teamwork when they're on the hunt.
0:02:21 > 0:02:24So we're doing a 2D body and a 3D head.
0:02:24 > 0:02:27- I'm working on the body. - I'll do the head.- OK.
0:02:27 > 0:02:29First, we need to draw out a chimp.
0:02:29 > 0:02:33So, get myself a big piece of board
0:02:33 > 0:02:35and start with the vine.
0:02:39 > 0:02:41He's really long arms.
0:02:43 > 0:02:47'I'm looking forward to seeing some chimps in the Deadly Art studio.
0:02:47 > 0:02:51'But on Deadly 60 in Uganda, our expert local guides
0:02:51 > 0:02:55'were taking us deep into the forest to track wild chimpanzees.
0:02:55 > 0:02:57'It looked like we were getting close.'
0:02:57 > 0:02:59Crikey!
0:02:59 > 0:03:03That's not a chimp either. Those are monkeys.
0:03:03 > 0:03:05The chimp's going after them.
0:03:05 > 0:03:08No way! This is absolute chaos!
0:03:08 > 0:03:14A lot of this is just big squabbles going on between the individuals,
0:03:14 > 0:03:17the senior ones disciplining the more junior ones,
0:03:17 > 0:03:20and they're just charging around in the treetops,
0:03:20 > 0:03:22causing absolute havoc.
0:03:22 > 0:03:26After a few hours of feasting, one of the males has got bored of figs.
0:03:26 > 0:03:28Here he comes.
0:03:28 > 0:03:30This way.
0:03:32 > 0:03:34Coming down this vine here.
0:03:36 > 0:03:40This is an adult male, just beginning to descend.
0:03:40 > 0:03:43A big male chimp like this
0:03:43 > 0:03:48would be a fair bit smaller than me, but a lot stronger.
0:03:48 > 0:03:52The arms are proportionately much longer
0:03:52 > 0:03:54and great for swinging through the treetops.
0:03:54 > 0:03:56It's a really powerfully-built animal.
0:03:58 > 0:04:00'Although great climbers,
0:04:00 > 0:04:03'chimps are too heavy to swing from tree to tree like monkeys,
0:04:03 > 0:04:07'so they come down when they need to move through the forest.'
0:04:07 > 0:04:08Down and off.
0:04:10 > 0:04:11Johnny, Johnny, Johnny!
0:04:14 > 0:04:17(I'd give anything to be able to climb like that!)
0:04:18 > 0:04:19Whoa!
0:04:21 > 0:04:23They move with such purpose.
0:04:23 > 0:04:27You can see the bulk of him just brought down a great big branch.
0:04:27 > 0:04:30There's more coming down from the treetops here.
0:04:35 > 0:04:39'I can't believe they're coming down all around us. What an experience!
0:04:39 > 0:04:42'It's awe-inspiring to see their power and agility.
0:04:42 > 0:04:43'Let's get back to the studio.'
0:04:43 > 0:04:45I've got all three chimps cut out.
0:04:45 > 0:04:48I'm painting them in a street-art graffiti style
0:04:48 > 0:04:51using layers of stencils to create that fur texture.
0:04:55 > 0:04:58This chimp head has been sculpted from a block of clay.
0:04:58 > 0:05:02I want to make a mould from it so we can make more chimp heads.
0:05:02 > 0:05:05I've got silicone rubber, which I'll coat it all with.
0:05:05 > 0:05:08This takes a long time to dry.
0:05:08 > 0:05:10The silicone rubber is dry.
0:05:10 > 0:05:13Now for the moment of truth.
0:05:13 > 0:05:16Peel it back. Now we have a mould.
0:05:16 > 0:05:21The next thing to do is line it with resin and fibreglass.
0:05:23 > 0:05:26'Mike's stencils and Jo's heads are coming on nicely.
0:05:26 > 0:05:29'Now, fancy drawing your own chimpanzee?
0:05:29 > 0:05:32'Jo's going to take a break to show you a Deadly Doodle.'
0:05:32 > 0:05:35I'm going to show you how to draw this chimpanzee.
0:05:35 > 0:05:39As always, we're going to start off with some basic shapes.
0:05:39 > 0:05:42Two large ovals in the middle of your page.
0:05:46 > 0:05:49And in the middle of them, a heart.
0:05:51 > 0:05:55And then coming out of your heart, another oval.
0:05:58 > 0:06:01Two curved lines, joining them up.
0:06:01 > 0:06:04And then big mug handles coming down the side,
0:06:04 > 0:06:07which will show us where to put his ears.
0:06:09 > 0:06:14Now, chimp eyes are almost exactly the same as human eyes.
0:06:14 > 0:06:17Two circles inside for the irises.
0:06:17 > 0:06:19And we can join it all up
0:06:19 > 0:06:21with a line going over the top of his head
0:06:21 > 0:06:22and back down the other side.
0:06:24 > 0:06:27Lastly, we're just going to draw a line
0:06:27 > 0:06:29which will be where his mouth is.
0:06:33 > 0:06:36Now I'm going to go in with my felt-tip pen.
0:06:36 > 0:06:40Starting off with that lovely fur around his face...
0:06:41 > 0:06:43This is just a zig-zaggy line.
0:06:45 > 0:06:48Then up, around his mouth section.
0:06:48 > 0:06:51Over the top of his nose.
0:06:51 > 0:06:55And for his nostrils, I'm just going to put two dark circles
0:06:55 > 0:06:59with little lines coming out of the side.
0:06:59 > 0:07:02Up over his eyes and back down again.
0:07:05 > 0:07:08And now you can put in a nice dark pupil.
0:07:14 > 0:07:16And those mug handles are his ears.
0:07:20 > 0:07:25And then some darker circles inside for his ear holes.
0:07:25 > 0:07:27And we need some more ear detail.
0:07:30 > 0:07:33Now, to make your chimp really chimp-like
0:07:33 > 0:07:36is all those wrinkles in his forehead and around his eyes.
0:07:36 > 0:07:39It'll give him lots of character and expression in his face.
0:07:51 > 0:07:55So there we have it, one cheeky chimp.
0:07:56 > 0:07:58'Good work, Jo. So lifelike!
0:07:58 > 0:08:00'We went to Swindon on a Deadly Day Out.
0:08:00 > 0:08:05'Here's how you got on with the doodle in the Deadly Art tent.'
0:08:10 > 0:08:13OK. Down there.
0:08:13 > 0:08:16ALL: Deadly!
0:08:16 > 0:08:18This is my Deadly Doodle of a chimp.
0:08:18 > 0:08:20Deadly!
0:08:20 > 0:08:23They showed us how to do the shapes and they made it shaggy
0:08:23 > 0:08:26and they taught me how to do really good drawing.
0:08:26 > 0:08:29- Deadly! - 'Some cheeky-looking chimps there.
0:08:29 > 0:08:32'Let's get back to the Deadly Art studio.'
0:08:32 > 0:08:36The resin's hard, all that's left to do is to peel back the mould.
0:08:36 > 0:08:41Wow! And there we have our first chimp head. Two more to go.
0:08:41 > 0:08:45That is amazing! Look how fierce it is. Argh!
0:08:45 > 0:08:48Now all that's left to do is to paint it a base coat of blue
0:08:48 > 0:08:50to match the body of a chimp.
0:08:50 > 0:08:54'Mike's going to take a break now to show you a DIY
0:08:54 > 0:08:58'if you're in the mood to monkey around.'
0:08:58 > 0:09:00Ooo! Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah!
0:09:00 > 0:09:03I'm going to show you how to do a Deadly DIY of a chimp mask.
0:09:03 > 0:09:07You need to start with your doodle from earlier.
0:09:07 > 0:09:11This DIY is all about cutting out the essential elements of your face.
0:09:11 > 0:09:14Cut out your ears, the face, the facial fur.
0:09:14 > 0:09:16And we've cut out the jaw separately
0:09:16 > 0:09:20because this is the bit that moves up and down.
0:09:20 > 0:09:22Now all you have to do is trace them out.
0:09:22 > 0:09:25I've got a nice piece of dark-brown foam for that.
0:09:25 > 0:09:27Put your piece right in the centre,
0:09:27 > 0:09:30push down hard and trace it out.
0:09:30 > 0:09:32The more detail you put in there, the better.
0:09:32 > 0:09:35Makes your chimp look more realistic, a little bit more fun.
0:09:35 > 0:09:39All right, the tracing's done, now we just have to cut it out.
0:09:39 > 0:09:43Now, a nice tip here is to cut out the main shape first
0:09:43 > 0:09:46and then go in and cut out all the details.
0:09:46 > 0:09:48OK, that's the facial fur all cut out.
0:09:48 > 0:09:50For the other parts of the face,
0:09:50 > 0:09:53I've used a nice lighter tan so they contrast our facial fur.
0:09:53 > 0:09:56So I've got the ears, I've got the face with the nose cut out
0:09:56 > 0:09:58and I've got the bottom jaw.
0:09:58 > 0:10:00Now we're going to work on the nose.
0:10:00 > 0:10:01You can see in my mask,
0:10:01 > 0:10:04the nose pops out a bit to give us room to breathe.
0:10:04 > 0:10:07So we've got our nosepiece, we want to fit it around our nose.
0:10:07 > 0:10:09So we're going to glue this down to another piece
0:10:09 > 0:10:12of the same colour foam and we're going to add in some tabs.
0:10:12 > 0:10:14Now, these tabs that I'm drawing
0:10:14 > 0:10:17are so that our nosepiece fits back into our hole,
0:10:17 > 0:10:19but pops out just a little bit.
0:10:21 > 0:10:25OK, we've got all four tabs drawn out. We just need to cut them out.
0:10:26 > 0:10:29Now we just need to glue that back into our face.
0:10:29 > 0:10:31So, a tiny bit of glue.
0:10:34 > 0:10:37Pop it in from the front.
0:10:37 > 0:10:40Bending these tabs around so the nose pops out a bit.
0:10:40 > 0:10:45And there you go. You've got room to breathe and you've got two nostrils.
0:10:45 > 0:10:48So now we can start gluing some of our pieces back together.
0:10:48 > 0:10:50Let's start with the ears.
0:10:51 > 0:10:53Glue those to our facial fur.
0:10:53 > 0:10:56And we'll glue our face to the back.
0:10:58 > 0:11:00Glue it on the face.
0:11:02 > 0:11:04Now we need to work on the bottom jaw.
0:11:04 > 0:11:09First thing we need to do is create a cup for the chin, like this.
0:11:09 > 0:11:13So using another piece of foam, we're going to glue along one edge,
0:11:13 > 0:11:18just glue it into a U shape on the back of your jaw.
0:11:18 > 0:11:21Now we need to add two tabs to the side of our jaw.
0:11:21 > 0:11:25This is to help guide our mouth up and down.
0:11:25 > 0:11:27So, a little bit of glue.
0:11:29 > 0:11:32Now we need to add our jaw back to our face.
0:11:32 > 0:11:34You need a few pieces of sewing elastic,
0:11:34 > 0:11:38so you need to glue that from the tabs back to the face.
0:11:41 > 0:11:43Now we need to fit it to our head.
0:11:43 > 0:11:45So with a little bit more sewing elastic,
0:11:45 > 0:11:48you need a longer piece, one that fits from ear to ear.
0:11:48 > 0:11:52And you're going to glue that to the back of your ears on your mask.
0:11:52 > 0:11:54Put that there.
0:12:00 > 0:12:04Now we need to attach the chin bit to that piece of elastic.
0:12:11 > 0:12:16OK. Same again on the other side.
0:12:16 > 0:12:18This piece goes down the middle of your head.
0:12:18 > 0:12:20It helps your mask not to fall off.
0:12:20 > 0:12:23So one bit of glue to the top of your mask
0:12:23 > 0:12:27and glue that back down to the piece of elastic going around your head.
0:12:27 > 0:12:30We're going to draw in some of the details,
0:12:30 > 0:12:31like our doodle from earlier.
0:12:31 > 0:12:33Let's see how it fits.
0:12:34 > 0:12:38How's that for a Deadly DIY? Ooo-ooo-ooo-ooo-ah!
0:12:38 > 0:12:42'I could almost swear a chimp was in the room with us.
0:12:42 > 0:12:43'Back to the big art.
0:12:43 > 0:12:48'Mike and Jo look like they're working on the finishing touches.
0:12:50 > 0:12:53'That's it. Our chimpanzees are ready.'
0:12:58 > 0:13:00Using that street-art graffiti style
0:13:00 > 0:13:02has really given our chimps an edge.
0:13:02 > 0:13:06And the realistic moulds for faces, they look fierce and hungry.
0:13:06 > 0:13:09- Hungry and deadly. Let's get out of here.- Absolutely!
0:13:09 > 0:13:11'I asked the Deadly Art team
0:13:11 > 0:13:15'to recreate these killer shots and turn them into art.'
0:13:15 > 0:13:17So, let's take a look at the finished work of art.
0:13:18 > 0:13:21'Wow! That is really striking!
0:13:21 > 0:13:23'It would never have occurred to me
0:13:23 > 0:13:26'to use blue paint for the chimps, but it definitely works.
0:13:26 > 0:13:29'I love that urban stencil design for the bodies.
0:13:29 > 0:13:31'The fact that the heads are 3D
0:13:31 > 0:13:35'really brings out their intelligence and their emotions.
0:13:35 > 0:13:38'You really feel that they could be working together as a team.
0:13:38 > 0:13:40'And, of course, the jungle vines
0:13:40 > 0:13:42'set them in a realistic environment, too.
0:13:42 > 0:13:44'Great stuff, team.
0:13:44 > 0:13:46'Art doesn't get any deadlier than this.'
0:13:46 > 0:13:49What an incredible creation.
0:13:49 > 0:13:51Make sure you try the Doodle and the DIY
0:13:51 > 0:13:54and we'll see you next time for more Deadly Art.
