0:00:02 > 0:00:05My name's Steve Backshall. And this is Deadly Art.
0:00:07 > 0:00:13I'm lucky enough to travel the world, tracking deadly animals.
0:00:13 > 0:00:17In this show, my team of artists take my killer moment...
0:00:19 > 0:00:22..and turn it into art.
0:00:22 > 0:00:25And we'll reveal another unique creation.
0:00:25 > 0:00:28Along the way, you'll get to pick up some tips, tricks
0:00:28 > 0:00:31and techniques, so you can make some art yourself.
0:00:31 > 0:00:34This is no ordinary art show,
0:00:35 > 0:00:37This is Deadly Art.
0:00:38 > 0:00:41Coming up on Deadly Art,
0:00:41 > 0:00:45I get close to one of Costa Rica's most colourful reptiles.
0:00:45 > 0:00:47That is a really beautiful animal.
0:00:47 > 0:00:51The Deadly Artists recreate another killer moment.
0:00:51 > 0:00:53I'll start with this lovely green colour.
0:00:53 > 0:00:56And, we'll show you a doodle to impress your friends.
0:00:59 > 0:01:01Snakes are some of my favourite animals,
0:01:01 > 0:01:05and I spend an enormous amount of time working with them.
0:01:05 > 0:01:08Boa constrictors, king cobras, reticulated pythons.
0:01:08 > 0:01:11Probably the most colourful is this yellow fellow.
0:01:11 > 0:01:12The eyelash pit viper.
0:01:12 > 0:01:16This is truly one of the world's most beautiful snakes,
0:01:16 > 0:01:17but extremely deadly.
0:01:17 > 0:01:20The eyelash pit viper name comes from two qualities.
0:01:20 > 0:01:24First, they have a heat-sensitive pit in the upper lip,
0:01:24 > 0:01:26which helps them sense their prey.
0:01:26 > 0:01:29Secondly, they have special scales above the eyes,
0:01:29 > 0:01:32which protect them and look like eyelashes.
0:01:32 > 0:01:36Time to meet our artists, ready for today's challenge.
0:01:36 > 0:01:39I'm Jo. I'm a painter, and a general mess-maker.
0:01:41 > 0:01:44I'm Nicola, and I'm the power-tool queen.
0:01:44 > 0:01:48Nicola and Joe are representing the Deadly Art team,
0:01:48 > 0:01:50who are always up for a challenge.
0:01:50 > 0:01:54This is today's killer moment, to inspire our artists.
0:01:54 > 0:01:59The viper's super-swift attack means the usually speedy hummingbird
0:01:59 > 0:02:01simply has no chance.
0:02:01 > 0:02:04Time for some more Deadly Art.
0:02:04 > 0:02:07I love this photo. And what's so dynamic about it,
0:02:07 > 0:02:11is the background is blurred, and the subject is sharp.
0:02:11 > 0:02:15It gives the impression that viper's really launching out.
0:02:15 > 0:02:18We'll create a huge photo-realist painting,
0:02:18 > 0:02:21which mimics the stuff in the background is out of focus,
0:02:21 > 0:02:24and the stuff in the foreground is in focus,
0:02:24 > 0:02:26- like a photograph.- Excellent.
0:02:26 > 0:02:28To give it that extra three-dimensional depth,
0:02:28 > 0:02:31- we'll make two paintings in one. - Excellent.
0:02:31 > 0:02:34It's going to be a big picture of that killer strike.
0:02:36 > 0:02:39I'm going to be painting the snake in the background, striking out.
0:02:39 > 0:02:42I will create the prey, in the foreground.
0:02:42 > 0:02:44- Two paintings...- In one.
0:02:44 > 0:02:49This is Deadly Art, so it has to include the use of power tools.
0:02:49 > 0:02:52Our artists are trained professionals,
0:02:52 > 0:02:55so don't try anything you see in our Big Art stages.
0:02:57 > 0:03:00Let's leave Nicola and Jo getting on with their viper art,
0:03:00 > 0:03:04and head over to Costa Rica, where the Deadly 60 crew and I
0:03:04 > 0:03:06got up close to a real pit viper.
0:03:06 > 0:03:10Typical food for the eyelash pit viper would be something like
0:03:10 > 0:03:12a small mouse, perhaps a bat.
0:03:12 > 0:03:15They'll even catch hummingbirds on the wing.
0:03:15 > 0:03:18The core body temperature of a bird, or small mammal,
0:03:18 > 0:03:19is about 38 degrees.
0:03:19 > 0:03:22What I've got here is a balloon, filled with hot water
0:03:22 > 0:03:25that's almost exactly that temperature.
0:03:25 > 0:03:28I'm going to move it in close to the viper, and hopefully
0:03:28 > 0:03:32get it to strike towards the balloon. Let's see what happens.
0:03:37 > 0:03:39HE LAUGHS
0:03:39 > 0:03:41That was AMAZING!
0:03:43 > 0:03:46Incredible. Absolutely incredible.
0:03:46 > 0:03:51Saw the mouth open almost fully wide.
0:03:51 > 0:03:54Almost so it was creating a stabbing shape,
0:03:54 > 0:03:56rather than a downward strike.
0:03:56 > 0:03:59The fangs are almost used like daggers,
0:03:59 > 0:04:03to pierce into the balloon. That was amazing.
0:04:03 > 0:04:04Totally deadly.
0:04:04 > 0:04:07Let's see how Jo and Nicola are getting on.
0:04:07 > 0:04:09To create an out-of-focus blur,
0:04:09 > 0:04:11I'm going to use an airbrush.
0:04:11 > 0:04:15Because this sprays the paint, it's all very soft,
0:04:15 > 0:04:17with no sharp edges.
0:04:17 > 0:04:20As we're in the jungle, I'll start with this lovely green colour.
0:04:20 > 0:04:23The background will look so realistic.
0:04:23 > 0:04:25Just like a photograph.
0:04:26 > 0:04:29This hummingbird is going to sit on my frame
0:04:29 > 0:04:31in the foreground of Jo's viper.
0:04:31 > 0:04:35I've cut out all the sections of the frame, the foliage and the flower.
0:04:35 > 0:04:39I WILL paint them, but first,
0:04:39 > 0:04:41I need to secure them into position.
0:04:48 > 0:04:54I can see how the outside frame will make the image stand out.
0:04:54 > 0:04:56I'm actually pretty excited.
0:04:56 > 0:04:59This viper artwork will represent this deadly snake brilliantly.
0:04:59 > 0:05:02Jo's going to take a break now.
0:05:02 > 0:05:04Got your pencil ready?
0:05:04 > 0:05:06It's time for a Deadly Doodle.
0:05:06 > 0:05:09This is a Deadly Doodle of an eyelash pit viper.
0:05:09 > 0:05:12I'm going to show you how to draw it.
0:05:12 > 0:05:15Starting with some simple shapes,
0:05:15 > 0:05:18I'm going to draw a cup shape.
0:05:22 > 0:05:25With a smaller cup inside.
0:05:29 > 0:05:31Two circles, for its eyes.
0:05:34 > 0:05:36Then, we can go onto his body.
0:05:36 > 0:05:39Do an arc over the top of its head.
0:05:39 > 0:05:42Then, another one, coming down and under.
0:05:43 > 0:05:46Then, following that line, across here,
0:05:46 > 0:05:49I'm going to take a road all the way off the page,
0:05:49 > 0:05:54and another one, which will form its body.
0:05:54 > 0:05:57Then, another line coming down here,
0:05:57 > 0:05:58to show the rest of it.
0:05:58 > 0:06:01Let's put in those deadly fangs.
0:06:02 > 0:06:06Then the bottom fangs, as well.
0:06:06 > 0:06:09Thos fantastic eyelashes will just be a zigzag line...
0:06:12 > 0:06:14..over the top of each eye.
0:06:16 > 0:06:19We'll draw another line, underneath its body.
0:06:21 > 0:06:25All along the underside, and down that road.
0:06:25 > 0:06:28Then, a little bit up the top, there.
0:06:28 > 0:06:30Right, we're ready for the detail.
0:06:30 > 0:06:33I'm going to use a black pen.
0:06:33 > 0:06:35Using the top line as a guide,
0:06:35 > 0:06:38I'll put in some gums first.
0:06:40 > 0:06:42Then those sharp fangs.
0:06:42 > 0:06:44And join the mouth up.
0:06:46 > 0:06:48Now, onto those eyes.
0:06:48 > 0:06:50Two slits, for its pupils.
0:06:50 > 0:06:52Really reptilian.
0:06:52 > 0:06:54The nostrils are two little circles,
0:06:54 > 0:06:56with a line coming off the side of them.
0:06:58 > 0:07:01Up over those amazing eyelashes,
0:07:01 > 0:07:03down the side of the face.
0:07:05 > 0:07:07Then over the top of the head.
0:07:09 > 0:07:11Back up to the other eyelash.
0:07:11 > 0:07:14Really make them stand out.
0:07:14 > 0:07:19Just going over all of my guide lines.
0:07:23 > 0:07:30Small lines, which will show the underside of the snake's body.
0:07:30 > 0:07:33Complete it, all the way along.
0:07:33 > 0:07:37Just a little bit of detail, inside his gaping mouth.
0:07:39 > 0:07:42There we have it. The striking eyelash pit viper.
0:07:42 > 0:07:44Is that deadly enough for you?
0:07:44 > 0:07:46It started out as a paper cup shape.
0:07:46 > 0:07:48And ended up as a pit viper.
0:07:48 > 0:07:51So, how did some of you get on, drawing this doodle?
0:07:51 > 0:07:54We went to Crawley, on a Deadly Day Out.
0:07:54 > 0:07:58Here's all the action from the Deadly Art tent.
0:07:59 > 0:08:02I'm definitely proud of my eyelash pit viper.
0:08:02 > 0:08:05I was never into art, but my friend persuaded me,
0:08:05 > 0:08:08and I'm really happy that I drew this.
0:08:08 > 0:08:10APPLAUSE AND CHEERING
0:08:10 > 0:08:12Loads of perfect pit vipers.
0:08:12 > 0:08:15Keep on doodling. Let's get back to the Deadly Art studio.
0:08:15 > 0:08:17The snake is taking shape.
0:08:17 > 0:08:19I've finished off the background.
0:08:19 > 0:08:22I've put some brown in, for those out-of-focus branches.
0:08:22 > 0:08:24Now for the fun part.
0:08:24 > 0:08:28I'm doing the pattern on the scaly snake's body.
0:08:28 > 0:08:31I'm using this to mask off the areas I don't want to spray.
0:08:31 > 0:08:33Jo and Nicola haven't got long left.
0:08:33 > 0:08:36While we wait to see the finished painting,
0:08:36 > 0:08:40I think it's time for a DIY with Nicola.
0:08:40 > 0:08:44How cool is that? You can make your own spiral, springy, striking viper
0:08:44 > 0:08:45by taking a piece of square card,
0:08:45 > 0:08:49and drawing on a big circle.
0:08:51 > 0:08:54Spiral it into the centre,
0:08:54 > 0:08:57and add on a tail at the end.
0:08:59 > 0:09:02I've taped four pencils together, and, using those,
0:09:02 > 0:09:05sweep straight across,
0:09:08 > 0:09:11and back, in the other direction.
0:09:11 > 0:09:14And then cut it out.
0:09:14 > 0:09:16Be careful when you use scissors.
0:09:19 > 0:09:20Then, using a crayon,
0:09:20 > 0:09:24I'm going to shade in the top edge of the snake's back.
0:09:24 > 0:09:27All the way along.
0:09:29 > 0:09:31Excellent.
0:09:31 > 0:09:33Now, we can make his head.
0:09:33 > 0:09:36Take a new piece of card.
0:09:36 > 0:09:41Draw on two egg shapes.
0:09:41 > 0:09:43Join those together,
0:09:43 > 0:09:47and add on some lines to create some flaps.
0:09:47 > 0:09:50You'll fold these flaps later, to make the head.
0:09:50 > 0:09:54The nose is a rocket shape,
0:09:54 > 0:09:57with an extra flap at the bottom.
0:09:57 > 0:10:00Again, some guide lines for the flaps.
0:10:02 > 0:10:04When you've cut them out,
0:10:04 > 0:10:06you'll have two shapes that look like this.
0:10:06 > 0:10:09This one is going to form his jaw.
0:10:09 > 0:10:13On the other side, I've also created those crosshatches.
0:10:14 > 0:10:16Then, using these guide lines,
0:10:16 > 0:10:18fold them in,
0:10:18 > 0:10:20and do the same along these lines,
0:10:20 > 0:10:23to create some flaps.
0:10:27 > 0:10:29Already, you can see the mouth.
0:10:29 > 0:10:32The nose is the same thing.
0:10:32 > 0:10:36I've cut two slits, here and here.
0:10:36 > 0:10:40The other lines just fold inwards.
0:10:40 > 0:10:43The nose and the head will fit together.
0:10:43 > 0:10:46Attach the nose to the head, using double-sided sticky tape.
0:10:49 > 0:10:53The head is almost complete.
0:10:53 > 0:10:56We now just need some eyes.
0:10:56 > 0:10:59I've cut out two small sunshine shapes.
0:10:59 > 0:11:02I've also added a slit, going down the centre.
0:11:04 > 0:11:07And some double-sided sticky tape.
0:11:07 > 0:11:09Pinch those together.
0:11:09 > 0:11:13Then I've cut a poly ball in half. Coloured it yellow.
0:11:13 > 0:11:16Stick those into the centre.
0:11:16 > 0:11:19Fasten the eyes
0:11:19 > 0:11:21to the head.
0:11:23 > 0:11:25To make him look extra deadly,
0:11:25 > 0:11:27I've cut out some fangs,
0:11:27 > 0:11:29using some foam board.
0:11:29 > 0:11:31A couple of big ones at the top.
0:11:34 > 0:11:37And two slightly smaller ones on the bottom.
0:11:39 > 0:11:42To bring those characteristic eyes to life,
0:11:42 > 0:11:46I'm going to give him some pupils.
0:11:46 > 0:11:47Using a hole punch,
0:11:47 > 0:11:49give him two nostrils.
0:11:51 > 0:11:54And, the magic part,
0:11:54 > 0:11:58is when we attach some of this invisible fishing wire.
0:11:58 > 0:12:00Thread a piece through the nose.
0:12:04 > 0:12:08Bring back the body, and this centre circle, here,
0:12:08 > 0:12:14folds over, like that, to create a bed for the head to sit in.
0:12:15 > 0:12:18Fix that down,
0:12:18 > 0:12:21and there you have your deadly viper
0:12:21 > 0:12:22with a deadly strike.
0:12:22 > 0:12:25Wow! What a strike!
0:12:25 > 0:12:27Back to the Big Art.
0:12:27 > 0:12:31Almost finished. Now for those fine details. Those deadly fangs.
0:12:33 > 0:12:36I've only just finished.
0:12:36 > 0:12:39I've just completed the final touches to this flower
0:12:39 > 0:12:41where the hummingbird feeds.
0:12:41 > 0:12:44Now it's time to put foreground to background.
0:12:44 > 0:12:47That's it. They've finished.
0:12:47 > 0:12:52This painting's so colourful and dramatic.
0:12:52 > 0:12:55The airbrush gave that photographic in- and out-of-focus effect.
0:12:55 > 0:13:00The two frames has given that killer moment a real 3D illusion.
0:13:00 > 0:13:02It's quite striking!
0:13:02 > 0:13:06So, it's nearly time for the big reveal.
0:13:06 > 0:13:09I asked the Deadly Art team to recreate this killer moment,
0:13:09 > 0:13:13and turn it into art. Let's look at the finished result.
0:13:14 > 0:13:17Sensational!
0:13:17 > 0:13:20The millisecond before a kill, frozen in time.
0:13:20 > 0:13:23It's a mixture of urban graffiti and collage.
0:13:23 > 0:13:26Dynamic. Modern. Magic!
0:13:26 > 0:13:29The hummingbird's engrossed in its nectar meal,
0:13:29 > 0:13:32and doesn't realise it's about to become lunch.
0:13:32 > 0:13:36The jungle leaves frame this lethal moment.
0:13:36 > 0:13:41Nice work, team. Art doesn't get any deadlier than this.
0:13:41 > 0:13:43What an incredible creation!
0:13:43 > 0:13:45Make sure you try the doodle, and the DIY.
0:13:45 > 0:13:48We'll see you next time for more Deadly Art.
