0:00:02 > 0:00:05My name's Steve Backshall and this is Deadly Art.
0:00:07 > 0:00:10I'm lucky enough to travel the world tracking deadly animals.
0:00:13 > 0:00:16In this show, my team of artists take my killer moment...
0:00:19 > 0:00:22..and turn it into art.
0:00:22 > 0:00:26'And we'll reveal another unique creation.
0:00:26 > 0:00:29'Along the way, you'll get to pick up some tips, tricks and techniques
0:00:29 > 0:00:31'so you can make some art yourself.
0:00:31 > 0:00:37'This is no ordinary art show. This is Deadly Art.
0:00:41 > 0:00:43'Coming up on Deadly Art,
0:00:43 > 0:00:45'I meet a group of predators with a sting in their tail.'
0:00:45 > 0:00:47(We have got to be careful how we move.
0:00:47 > 0:00:50(The last thing we want to do is get these angry.)
0:00:50 > 0:00:54'The deadly artists ink up a brilliant work of art.'
0:00:54 > 0:00:56Wow!
0:00:56 > 0:00:59'And you can get creative, too.'
0:01:02 > 0:01:04Today's stinging beastie
0:01:04 > 0:01:07is probably the most deadly insect found in Britain.
0:01:07 > 0:01:11This is the largest member of the wasp family we have here.
0:01:11 > 0:01:12It's the hornet.
0:01:12 > 0:01:16'A hornet's sting can hurt something that's my size,
0:01:16 > 0:01:18'so imagine how much damage it can do
0:01:18 > 0:01:20'to something thousands of times smaller.'
0:01:20 > 0:01:23With a body that can be 3.5 centimetres long
0:01:23 > 0:01:25and massive munching mandibles,
0:01:25 > 0:01:28sometimes it doesn't even need to use its sting,
0:01:28 > 0:01:31it will just tear its prey apart using its mouthparts.
0:01:31 > 0:01:34Hornets are one animal you just don't want to make angry
0:01:34 > 0:01:37because they have an awful lot of friends, too.
0:01:37 > 0:01:41'Time to meet our friends in the Deadly Art gallery.'
0:01:41 > 0:01:43Hey. I'm Mike. I'm a cartoon artist.
0:01:43 > 0:01:46And I'm up for today's Deadly Art.
0:01:46 > 0:01:49I'm Nicola. I'm a power tool queen.
0:01:51 > 0:01:54'Mike and Nicola will be representing the Deadly Art team
0:01:54 > 0:01:57'who are always up for a challenge.'
0:01:59 > 0:02:02And here are some killer moments to inspire them.
0:02:02 > 0:02:04'Hornets build good-sized hives
0:02:04 > 0:02:07'and may have as many as 1,000 living in them.
0:02:07 > 0:02:10'But they actually go on the rampage attacking other insects.
0:02:10 > 0:02:12'Sometimes, this could be bees
0:02:12 > 0:02:15'living in hives with tens of thousands of individuals.
0:02:15 > 0:02:18'And a hornet might kill every single one of them.
0:02:18 > 0:02:22'Stealing their grubs and taking them back to feed their young.'
0:02:22 > 0:02:25We'll represent the hornet as a predator in its environment.
0:02:25 > 0:02:27Especially in a swarm.
0:02:27 > 0:02:30So let's make sure our hornets are larger than life.
0:02:30 > 0:02:33Let's include the nest because they protect that so fiercely.
0:02:33 > 0:02:37- All right. Let's do it! - 'Time for some more Deadly Art.'
0:02:37 > 0:02:40We've decided to create a huge print of a swarm of hornets.
0:02:40 > 0:02:43I'm going to draw the biggest hornet right here,
0:02:43 > 0:02:47really large, in the frame, with it swings stretched across.
0:02:47 > 0:02:50Then a trail of hornets getting smaller as they get further away.
0:02:50 > 0:02:53Perfect. This would make a great spot for the nest.
0:02:53 > 0:02:56Maybe hanging on a branch as it comes across into the foreground.
0:02:56 > 0:02:58- Love it.- Let's do it!- OK.
0:02:58 > 0:03:01'While Mike and Nicola get on with their hornet picture,
0:03:01 > 0:03:04'the Deadly 60 crew and I heard about a nest of hornets in a roof.
0:03:04 > 0:03:06'We had to investigate.'
0:03:06 > 0:03:09- HE WHISPERS:- Right, then. They're just through here,
0:03:09 > 0:03:11in this corner here.
0:03:11 > 0:03:15So if I go in, then you just put your head around the corner.
0:03:15 > 0:03:19We've got to be really, really careful how we move
0:03:19 > 0:03:22because the last thing we want to do is get these angry.
0:03:22 > 0:03:24That would be very bad news up here.
0:03:27 > 0:03:29Just next to me here,...
0:03:30 > 0:03:33..this exquisite structure,
0:03:33 > 0:03:38which looks very much like a sort of partially-deflated beach ball,
0:03:38 > 0:03:43is actually the nest of our largest species of wasp.
0:03:43 > 0:03:46They are hornets.
0:03:46 > 0:03:48The reason that we're moving very slowly
0:03:48 > 0:03:50and trying to keep quiet
0:03:50 > 0:03:53is that these can actually be quite dangerous.
0:03:53 > 0:03:55They're very, very large.
0:03:55 > 0:03:59From the tip of their abdomen, that is the back of their tail,
0:03:59 > 0:04:02to their head, can be as big as my thumb.
0:04:02 > 0:04:05They have an extremely painful sting.
0:04:05 > 0:04:08If they feel their nest is under threat, they'll use it.
0:04:08 > 0:04:10'Join us later to see if we survived
0:04:10 > 0:04:13'our hornet encounter without being stung.
0:04:13 > 0:04:16'Let's see how Nicola and Mike are getting on.'
0:04:16 > 0:04:18We've finished our drawing.
0:04:18 > 0:04:22This large piece of MDF is going to become the base plate for our print.
0:04:22 > 0:04:24Just like potato printing,
0:04:24 > 0:04:28we're going to take away all the areas that we don't need.
0:04:28 > 0:04:31Our print is huge. Instead of putting the print onto the paper,
0:04:31 > 0:04:36we're going to put the paper onto the print.
0:04:37 > 0:04:40Now, just like the potato print,
0:04:40 > 0:04:43we need to chip away all the bits that we don't need.
0:04:43 > 0:04:44That looks like fun.
0:04:44 > 0:04:47Here's a tool. Let's get chipping.
0:04:48 > 0:04:50'Such an interesting technique.
0:04:50 > 0:04:52'Perfect for carving those hornet stripes.
0:04:52 > 0:04:55'Even though there's a lot to do,
0:04:55 > 0:04:57'Mike's all ready for today's Deadly Doodle.'
0:04:57 > 0:05:01I'm going to show you how to draw this angry hornet.
0:05:01 > 0:05:05We'll start with a circle in the middle of the page for the body.
0:05:07 > 0:05:10And on top of that, we're going to draw a heart for the head.
0:05:12 > 0:05:16Inside the heart, draw a circle for one eye
0:05:16 > 0:05:19and a C on the other side of the heart for the other eye.
0:05:20 > 0:05:24Draw in where the antenna are going to go.
0:05:24 > 0:05:27Now we're going to draw a horn shape coming off that circle,
0:05:27 > 0:05:29wrapping around to the bottom.
0:05:29 > 0:05:32This is for the rest of the body.
0:05:32 > 0:05:35Draw three lines for the wings, just to mark out where they go.
0:05:37 > 0:05:39Same on the other side.
0:05:41 > 0:05:45Now, for the legs, just draw zigzag shapes.
0:05:45 > 0:05:47One here, one here.
0:05:47 > 0:05:49Two legs on the other side.
0:05:49 > 0:05:53They come out right here and here. That's your pencil sketch done.
0:05:53 > 0:05:55Move on to the markers, add in the details.
0:05:55 > 0:05:58We're going to make our hornet look really angry.
0:05:58 > 0:06:02We're going to draw a W in the middle of our heart,
0:06:02 > 0:06:04come around and finish off his head.
0:06:08 > 0:06:11Draw in the eye. Make sure it's bugging out.
0:06:11 > 0:06:14Then add a highlight in the middle of his eye there.
0:06:15 > 0:06:21Wrap around, finishing off the bottom of that heart.
0:06:21 > 0:06:24And then we'll just thicken up those antennae.
0:06:27 > 0:06:30Now we'll start the legs. Go back over those lines,
0:06:30 > 0:06:32this time we're going to add in joints.
0:06:32 > 0:06:35They really make the legs look like insect legs.
0:06:35 > 0:06:38Just two little legs on the other side of the body.
0:06:38 > 0:06:39Now we're going to start the wings.
0:06:39 > 0:06:42Go back over those three lines.
0:06:42 > 0:06:44This time, we're going to close them off at the end
0:06:44 > 0:06:46by drawing in those two lines.
0:06:46 > 0:06:48If you add a few zigzag lines inside the wings,
0:06:48 > 0:06:50it looks like they're buzzing.
0:06:50 > 0:06:54Same again on the other side. Zigzag line.
0:06:54 > 0:06:56Now we're going to go back over the body.
0:06:56 > 0:07:00But this time, we're going to add a little bit of fuzz to it.
0:07:00 > 0:07:02Go back over the horn.
0:07:04 > 0:07:06Ending in that point.
0:07:06 > 0:07:07Now add in some stripes.
0:07:07 > 0:07:11Curving around the body.
0:07:11 > 0:07:13Now you can colour in the stripes.
0:07:13 > 0:07:16Add some black lines in here
0:07:16 > 0:07:18and colour in the stinger.
0:07:18 > 0:07:20To emphasise that it's really deadly,
0:07:20 > 0:07:23I'm going to add a few little lines coming out.
0:07:23 > 0:07:24Ouch!
0:07:24 > 0:07:28- How's that for a deadly hornet? - 'Mean-looking hornet.
0:07:28 > 0:07:30'Time to see your hornets now.
0:07:30 > 0:07:32'We went to Swindon on a Deadly Day Out.
0:07:32 > 0:07:36'And here's how some of you got on in the Deadly Art tent.'
0:07:36 > 0:07:38ALL: Deadly!
0:07:40 > 0:07:41BOTH: Deadly!
0:07:41 > 0:07:44I really enjoyed doing the drawing of the Deadly Doodle.
0:07:44 > 0:07:49I'm very happy with my doodle that I drew today.
0:07:49 > 0:07:52'Well done, you lot. Keep on doodling.
0:07:52 > 0:07:54'Let's get to the Deadly Art studio
0:07:54 > 0:07:57'and the base plate for the massive ink print is coming together.'
0:07:57 > 0:08:00We've chipped away the areas we don't need,
0:08:00 > 0:08:03apart from this larger area all the way around the outside.
0:08:03 > 0:08:05So it's power tool time.
0:08:05 > 0:08:08'Remember, our artists are trained professionals.
0:08:08 > 0:08:10'Don't try this at home.
0:08:10 > 0:08:12'While Mike and Nicola carry on,
0:08:12 > 0:08:15'let's get back to my visit to a hornet's nest.
0:08:15 > 0:08:17'And I was trying my best not to make them angry.'
0:08:17 > 0:08:20Hornets are amazing predators.
0:08:20 > 0:08:24They'll catch almost any small insect on the wing
0:08:24 > 0:08:28and devour it using their powerful mandibles.
0:08:28 > 0:08:31If it's large enough to need it, it'll paralyse it,
0:08:31 > 0:08:34using their sting.
0:08:34 > 0:08:36And if it hurts me,
0:08:36 > 0:08:40then any small insect is going to be instantly paralysed.
0:08:40 > 0:08:43- BUZZING - Ooo! Oh, dear.
0:08:43 > 0:08:44Uh-oh.
0:08:44 > 0:08:50Right. Now is when we have to bid our retreat.
0:08:50 > 0:08:52Because once they're in the air like this,
0:08:52 > 0:08:54is when they're really angry.
0:08:54 > 0:08:57And, er,...
0:08:57 > 0:08:59if you get stung by one,
0:08:59 > 0:09:02they release a kind of pheromone,
0:09:02 > 0:09:03a chemical scent,
0:09:03 > 0:09:06which makes all the others attack.
0:09:06 > 0:09:08So now is the time to leave.
0:09:08 > 0:09:11- I think it is time to leave.- OK. He's going for your camera, Mark.
0:09:11 > 0:09:15All right. I might just...I can't turn the light off.
0:09:15 > 0:09:17Oh, he's by my trouser leg.
0:09:17 > 0:09:20'Luckily, we escaped sting-free. Just about.
0:09:20 > 0:09:22'But now, Nicola has got a DIY
0:09:22 > 0:09:24'that I bet you'll want to have a go at making.'
0:09:24 > 0:09:28Check out these cool hornet wings,
0:09:28 > 0:09:31complete with stripy straps, just like the hornet's body.
0:09:31 > 0:09:33I think I might just keep them on.
0:09:33 > 0:09:38To make the wings, you'll need 12 coat hangers.
0:09:38 > 0:09:40Take six of them for the first wing
0:09:40 > 0:09:45and cut the hook off five of them and leave one remaining.
0:09:45 > 0:09:47Lay them out on a flat surface
0:09:47 > 0:09:50to create the skeleton of the first wing.
0:09:50 > 0:09:53You can lay them out anywhere you like.
0:09:53 > 0:09:55I'm going to use these cable ties.
0:09:55 > 0:09:57You can get them from any hardware store.
0:09:57 > 0:10:00Alternatively, use string.
0:10:00 > 0:10:03Fix one on every single joint.
0:10:03 > 0:10:07When your skeleton is fixed into position, snip off the excess.
0:10:07 > 0:10:10'Take care when you use scissors.'
0:10:10 > 0:10:13There you have your finished skeleton.
0:10:13 > 0:10:15Now you're ready to create the membrane.
0:10:15 > 0:10:18Take a big piece of fabric, any fabric you like,
0:10:18 > 0:10:22and ensure that your fabric is bigger than the skeleton itself.
0:10:22 > 0:10:26For this one, I'm using some shiny silvery fabric
0:10:26 > 0:10:28to reflect the colour of the hornet's wing
0:10:28 > 0:10:31and then I'm laying over the top this netty fabric
0:10:31 > 0:10:34to give it some really interesting texture.
0:10:34 > 0:10:40Lay that upside down over the top of your skeleton.
0:10:40 > 0:10:41Now glue it into position.
0:10:41 > 0:10:45You can use craft glue. It'll just take a bit longer to dry.
0:10:50 > 0:10:52And there you have it.
0:10:52 > 0:10:54Flip it over.
0:10:54 > 0:10:59And trim of all the excess fabric. All the way around the edge.
0:11:01 > 0:11:04There it is. Your first wing finished. Doesn't it look great?
0:11:04 > 0:11:08But it will look even better when you have two of them.
0:11:08 > 0:11:11Now you're ready to make this section of the wings.
0:11:11 > 0:11:14So take an old rucksack.
0:11:14 > 0:11:17Not a new one. We don't want you getting in trouble.
0:11:17 > 0:11:21And cut off the front panel, just like that.
0:11:21 > 0:11:25This is the section we need, the back part with the straps included.
0:11:25 > 0:11:27I've used some coloured tape
0:11:27 > 0:11:32to simply wrap around to add on my hornet stripes.
0:11:32 > 0:11:35At the top, on this side,
0:11:35 > 0:11:39make a small hole and four more down here.
0:11:39 > 0:11:41Just like that.
0:11:41 > 0:11:43When you position the wings,
0:11:43 > 0:11:47you want the coat hangers facing downwards.
0:11:47 > 0:11:50I've also made two holes in the wing
0:11:50 > 0:11:54that match up perfectly with the two on the bag.
0:11:54 > 0:11:59To fix those into position, just use some more cable ties.
0:12:08 > 0:12:12And your hornet wings are ready to go.
0:12:12 > 0:12:15Time for me to buzz off.
0:12:15 > 0:12:17'What wonderful wings!
0:12:17 > 0:12:21'Make your own at home. But don't sting anyone.
0:12:21 > 0:12:23'Back to the big art.'
0:12:23 > 0:12:26I'm using this oil-based ink to colour the areas of the plate
0:12:26 > 0:12:28we want to appear on our final print.
0:12:28 > 0:12:32'Nicola and Mike are going to press a huge piece of white paper
0:12:32 > 0:12:34'up against their board to create a print.'
0:12:34 > 0:12:36Let's rock and roll.
0:12:38 > 0:12:40'That's it. They've finished.'
0:12:40 > 0:12:43Ready, Mike? The moment of truth.
0:12:44 > 0:12:46Wow! It looks amazing!
0:12:47 > 0:12:50- It's so bold and striking! - That's beautiful.
0:12:50 > 0:12:54Now all it needs is yellow paint to really bring that hornet to life.
0:12:54 > 0:12:56Stunning.
0:12:57 > 0:13:01'So it's nearly time for the big reveal.
0:13:01 > 0:13:04'I asked the Deadly Art team to recreate these killer shots
0:13:04 > 0:13:05'and turn them into art.
0:13:05 > 0:13:09'Let's take a look at the finished result.
0:13:10 > 0:13:12'I love the simplicity of this picture.
0:13:12 > 0:13:15'The black-and-white image is so striking,
0:13:15 > 0:13:18'but of course, the vibrant yellow really screams warning.
0:13:18 > 0:13:21'This insect means business.
0:13:21 > 0:13:24'And of course, I like the swarm, but I love the huge hornet
0:13:24 > 0:13:29'leading the others on their deadly mission. It tells a real story.
0:13:29 > 0:13:31'This image is just great.
0:13:31 > 0:13:33'It's kind of like a living cartoon.
0:13:33 > 0:13:36'You can almost imagine these insects coming to life
0:13:36 > 0:13:38'and flying off the canvas.
0:13:38 > 0:13:42'Nice work, team. Art doesn't get any deadlier than this.'
0:13:42 > 0:13:45That was a truly sublime work of art.
0:13:45 > 0:13:47Make sure you try the Doodle and the DIY
0:13:47 > 0:13:51and we'll see you next time for more Deadly Art.
