0:00:02 > 0:00:04My name's Steve Backshall and this is Deadly Art.

0:00:07 > 0:00:13I'm lucky enough to travel the world tracking deadly animals.

0:00:13 > 0:00:17But in this show, my team of artists take my killer moment...

0:00:19 > 0:00:22..and turn it into art.

0:00:22 > 0:00:26We'll reveal another unique creation.

0:00:26 > 0:00:28Along the way, you'll pick up some tips,

0:00:28 > 0:00:31tricks and techniques so you can make some art yourself.

0:00:33 > 0:00:37This is no ordinary art show. This is Deadly Art.

0:00:38 > 0:00:41Coming up on Deadly Art...

0:00:41 > 0:00:44I come face-to-face with the biggest spider in the world.

0:00:44 > 0:00:46Look at the size of her!

0:00:46 > 0:00:49The art team build one of the largest models

0:00:49 > 0:00:51ever attempted on Deadly Art.

0:00:51 > 0:00:54I'm using the airbrush to give it lots of definition.

0:00:54 > 0:00:57And we'll show you how to draw a spider, too.

0:00:57 > 0:00:59So, what are we looking at today?

0:00:59 > 0:01:04These amazing creatures are huge, hairy and pretty scary.

0:01:04 > 0:01:08With fangs twice as long as human teeth and much sharper.

0:01:08 > 0:01:10It's a tarantula.

0:01:10 > 0:01:15But not just any tarantula, this is the Goliath bird-eating tarantula.

0:01:15 > 0:01:17Found in the rainforests of South America,

0:01:17 > 0:01:20they live in burrows that can be a metre underground.

0:01:20 > 0:01:23This is the biggest tarantula in the world

0:01:23 > 0:01:27and they can grow to be as big as a dinner plate.

0:01:27 > 0:01:29And yes, as the name suggests,

0:01:29 > 0:01:33they can, very occasionally, eat birds.

0:01:33 > 0:01:35This animal is seriously deadly.

0:01:35 > 0:01:40Time to meet today's artists on standby in the Deadly Art studio.

0:01:40 > 0:01:42Hey, I'm Mike, I'm a cartoon artist

0:01:42 > 0:01:44and I'm up for today's Deadly Art.

0:01:44 > 0:01:46I'm Jo, I'm a painter,

0:01:46 > 0:01:48a sculptor,

0:01:48 > 0:01:50and a general mess-maker.

0:01:50 > 0:01:54Mike and Jo will be representing the Deadly Art team,

0:01:54 > 0:01:56who are always up for a challenge.

0:01:56 > 0:01:59Here are the killer shots to inspire the artwork.

0:01:59 > 0:02:02This spider is truly a giant,

0:02:02 > 0:02:05with a massive, hairy body and huge fangs.

0:02:05 > 0:02:07I can't wait to see the artwork.

0:02:11 > 0:02:14There's only one thing for it, this artwork is going to be large.

0:02:14 > 0:02:17I like it - big legs, big fangs, everything oversized.

0:02:17 > 0:02:20- It's going to be terrifying! - Time for some more Deadly Art.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23I'm not sure what part of the spider requires feathers.

0:02:23 > 0:02:25I'm sure we'll find out!

0:02:25 > 0:02:28This is where the back section of the spider will be

0:02:28 > 0:02:30and this is where the front section will be.

0:02:30 > 0:02:32This arc is where the legs are going to end up.

0:02:32 > 0:02:34Same again.

0:02:34 > 0:02:36Just the same.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39This spider is going to be MASSIVE!

0:02:39 > 0:02:41This art has got to be huge.

0:02:41 > 0:02:45On Deadly 60, we made our way through the incredible Amazon rainforest,

0:02:45 > 0:02:47home to lots of creepy-crawlies

0:02:47 > 0:02:51and it didn't take us long to find a Goliath bird-eating spider.

0:02:51 > 0:02:53This spider's venom wouldn't kill me

0:02:53 > 0:02:58but you really don't want to get bitten by those gigantic fangs.

0:02:58 > 0:03:00She does, however, have another form of defence

0:03:00 > 0:03:03that I've got to be really careful of.

0:03:03 > 0:03:07That kicking her leg against her abdomen,

0:03:07 > 0:03:11sending hairs up into the air.

0:03:11 > 0:03:16If those get into your eyes or nose or the back of your throat,

0:03:16 > 0:03:18it can be very irritating and itchy

0:03:18 > 0:03:22and it's actually the spider's primary method

0:03:22 > 0:03:25of getting rid of an attacker,

0:03:25 > 0:03:27despite the fact that it has gigantic fangs.

0:03:33 > 0:03:39She's got fangs that are about as long as a cheetah's claws

0:03:39 > 0:03:41and a good deal sharper.

0:03:41 > 0:03:47She could give me a really, really nasty bite.

0:03:47 > 0:03:51So, I just want to be ever so careful.

0:03:51 > 0:03:56This is the Goliath bird-eating spider.

0:03:56 > 0:04:00Goliath was a giant in the Bible

0:04:00 > 0:04:04and this is a giant among spiders.

0:04:04 > 0:04:09Now, although they are certainly capable of it,

0:04:09 > 0:04:13birds don't actually form a large part of their diet.

0:04:13 > 0:04:15Most of what they'll eat,

0:04:15 > 0:04:21rats and mice, lizards and crickets invertebrates,

0:04:21 > 0:04:24but really, they'll take almost anything

0:04:24 > 0:04:27that is unlucky enough to wander past their burrow.

0:04:27 > 0:04:29Look at the size of her!

0:04:29 > 0:04:32I can feel those hairs that she kicked up into the air,

0:04:32 > 0:04:36I can feel them in the back of my throat and I want to cough

0:04:36 > 0:04:39but it's not really a good time to cough

0:04:39 > 0:04:43with that on your hands.

0:04:45 > 0:04:49As she relaxes, she decides to go for a wander

0:04:49 > 0:04:52and though it's still a little nervy,

0:04:52 > 0:04:55I think I've earned this spider's trust.

0:04:56 > 0:05:00That was a phenomenal experience.

0:05:00 > 0:05:03How are Jo and Mike getting on with their deadly giant?

0:05:05 > 0:05:07This is the front section of the body

0:05:07 > 0:05:10and all the legs attach to these blocks of wood.

0:05:10 > 0:05:13I've got one last one to put in place - give it a mark.

0:05:15 > 0:05:17Now we just have to screw it in.

0:05:23 > 0:05:25This block of polystyrene is angular,

0:05:25 > 0:05:27whereas the body of a spider is rounded,

0:05:27 > 0:05:30so, I'm cutting off the edges

0:05:30 > 0:05:34and then smoothing it into shape.

0:05:34 > 0:05:37- The body is looking good. - Woo-hoo, it's Christmas!

0:05:37 > 0:05:40Jo's is loving this a bit too much!

0:05:40 > 0:05:42That's the leg support finished.

0:05:42 > 0:05:44Now to make a leg.

0:05:44 > 0:05:49Our spider has two joints in its legs. Here's one right here.

0:05:49 > 0:05:51We've flattened the end of our chrome tube,

0:05:51 > 0:05:54drilled a hole through it and attached it with a bolt and a nut.

0:05:54 > 0:05:57Now we need another one attached right here.

0:05:57 > 0:05:59Mike and Jo are trained professionals.

0:05:59 > 0:06:02Don't try any of our big art techniques at home.

0:06:02 > 0:06:03We have to drill a hole.

0:06:03 > 0:06:07This is really exciting. This art is going to be terrifying.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10Time to draw your own spooky spider now.

0:06:10 > 0:06:11It's Deadly Doodle time.

0:06:11 > 0:06:15I'm going to show you how to draw this truly Deadly Doodle

0:06:15 > 0:06:17of a Goliath bird-eating spider.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20We're going to start with some basic shapes.

0:06:20 > 0:06:25A long, large oval near the top of my page.

0:06:25 > 0:06:30Then some elongated ones inside.

0:06:30 > 0:06:33Over the top, a circle which acts as a guide

0:06:33 > 0:06:36for those beady little eyes that go inside.

0:06:36 > 0:06:41For the front section, the palps, which look like two shorter legs.

0:06:41 > 0:06:44Then we're going to go in

0:06:44 > 0:06:49with angled lines coming down for those big legs.

0:06:51 > 0:06:54As with every spider, there's eight of these.

0:06:54 > 0:06:57So, repeat this eight times.

0:06:57 > 0:07:00OK, now I'm going to go into it with a felt-tip pen,

0:07:00 > 0:07:03starting off with those deadly fangs.

0:07:03 > 0:07:05Those fangs are massive!

0:07:06 > 0:07:14Up, around the fangs and those beady, dark eyes.

0:07:16 > 0:07:18OK, using those lines as a guide,

0:07:18 > 0:07:22I'm going to go around with a jaggedy line

0:07:22 > 0:07:24to make them all furry.

0:07:28 > 0:07:33All I'm doing at the bottom of each leg is a little zigzag

0:07:33 > 0:07:35with fur hanging down.

0:07:35 > 0:07:38This is going to be one hairy spider!

0:07:38 > 0:07:40This is the fun bit.

0:07:40 > 0:07:42Make your spider nice and furry, too.

0:07:42 > 0:07:48Then around the whole body, again, zigzagging, making it really furry.

0:07:48 > 0:07:49Add a bit of shading.

0:07:51 > 0:07:55A bit more fur around his body where his legs are joining.

0:07:55 > 0:08:00The last thing I'm going to do is go underneath all of those legs

0:08:00 > 0:08:04with a bit more shading, really take your time with the shading

0:08:04 > 0:08:06because the more effort you put in,

0:08:06 > 0:08:09the more your spider will jump off the page.

0:08:09 > 0:08:12Th last thing is the little hairs on his legs.

0:08:12 > 0:08:16One Goliath bird-eating spider, is that deadly enough for you?

0:08:16 > 0:08:17Great spider, Jo.

0:08:17 > 0:08:21Keep hold of your doodle because Mike is going to use it in a DIY later.

0:08:21 > 0:08:25Here's how some of you got on with this spider

0:08:25 > 0:08:28when we visited Swindon on a Deadly day out.

0:08:31 > 0:08:33OK, I want all those legs...

0:08:35 > 0:08:37Brilliant.

0:08:37 > 0:08:39ALL: Deadly!

0:08:39 > 0:08:42I'm Leo and this is my Deadly Doodle.

0:08:42 > 0:08:44ALL: Deadly!

0:08:44 > 0:08:47It was really good fun because they told us how to do the tarantula

0:08:47 > 0:08:50and it's helped us improve our drawing skills.

0:08:50 > 0:08:52ALL: Deadly!

0:08:52 > 0:08:55On the TV, when people draw, it looks quite hard

0:08:55 > 0:08:57but when you do it in stages, it is quite easy.

0:08:57 > 0:08:59ALL: Deadly!

0:08:59 > 0:09:02When you're bored, you can just have a pen and paper with you

0:09:02 > 0:09:04and start doodling everywhere.

0:09:04 > 0:09:08I reckon your spiders are almost as good as the real thing.

0:09:08 > 0:09:11Keep on doodling. Let's get back to the Deadly art studio

0:09:11 > 0:09:12and our spider.

0:09:12 > 0:09:15We've got our legs laid out everywhere here

0:09:15 > 0:09:17and they're all at different stages.

0:09:17 > 0:09:20The first stage is the skeleton you saw earlier,

0:09:20 > 0:09:22made up with those three pieces.

0:09:22 > 0:09:26The legs have been covered in this pipe lagging to bulk them out a bit

0:09:26 > 0:09:28and then covered in this nice material

0:09:28 > 0:09:31to give it that spider texture.

0:09:31 > 0:09:33Lastly, I'll pick out a bit of our feather

0:09:33 > 0:09:35and glue it down.

0:09:35 > 0:09:37So that's what the feathers were for!

0:09:37 > 0:09:40Doesn't it make those hairs look realistic?

0:09:40 > 0:09:42The back section of our spider

0:09:42 > 0:09:44is covered in this stretchy velour fabric

0:09:44 > 0:09:47but the front section is much more detailed.

0:09:47 > 0:09:52I'm going to go in with an airbrush and give it lots of definition.

0:09:52 > 0:09:53I love the spraying.

0:09:53 > 0:09:56The shading makes the front section look so lifelike.

0:09:56 > 0:09:59We are moments away from the Big Reveal but now,

0:09:59 > 0:10:02grab your doodle from earlier and let's join Mike for a Deadly DIY.

0:10:02 > 0:10:06I'm going to show you how to do your very own sci-fi movie picture.

0:10:06 > 0:10:08It starts with a cutout of your doodle from earlier.

0:10:08 > 0:10:13I've made sure I've got this detail of all the fur left in there

0:10:13 > 0:10:14all cut out really nice.

0:10:14 > 0:10:17That's just the spider, so we'll put that to the side for now.

0:10:17 > 0:10:19We're going to work on the background.

0:10:19 > 0:10:22For the background, I've chosen bright orange

0:10:22 > 0:10:26to offset our dark spider and I've put that on a piece of foam board.

0:10:26 > 0:10:29All comic books have this starburst kind of style

0:10:29 > 0:10:33so to get that effect, I'm going to take a piece of grey card

0:10:33 > 0:10:37and we are going to to draw out our starburst.

0:10:37 > 0:10:41That's just a simple circle in the middle

0:10:41 > 0:10:45and you can draw out a whole bunch of points.

0:10:45 > 0:10:48It's like drawing in a giant sun.

0:10:48 > 0:10:50Just cut it out.

0:10:50 > 0:10:54Making sure to cut out the inside, leaving the outside,

0:10:54 > 0:10:56because that's the important part.

0:10:56 > 0:11:01It's looking good. Awesome! I'm going to stick that down on top.

0:11:01 > 0:11:03Now we need to move on to the town,

0:11:03 > 0:11:06where our spider has destroyed all of our buildings.

0:11:06 > 0:11:08We'll start with three lines.

0:11:08 > 0:11:12I'm going to join those lines at the top.

0:11:12 > 0:11:15I'm going to do it the same again by adding a little tiny roof

0:11:15 > 0:11:17and maybe even a little dome.

0:11:17 > 0:11:19Now I'm going to draw in some windows

0:11:19 > 0:11:21which are upside down U's,

0:11:21 > 0:11:24getting smaller as we go down the building.

0:11:25 > 0:11:28Just split the building in half.

0:11:28 > 0:11:30These lines come together at the bottom

0:11:30 > 0:11:33to give perspective. We're going to colour it in.

0:11:33 > 0:11:36I'm going to use a grey crayon and a purple crayon

0:11:36 > 0:11:38all around for the grey.

0:11:38 > 0:11:41Then a little purple highlight.

0:11:43 > 0:11:44Happy with that.

0:11:44 > 0:11:48The last thing we add are a few cracks in the building,

0:11:48 > 0:11:52as if it's about to fall to pieces. Get a nice, thick, black outline.

0:11:53 > 0:11:57The more detail you put in this, the better it will look.

0:11:57 > 0:11:59Now we just need to cut it out.

0:12:02 > 0:12:05OK, we've got our finished building.

0:12:05 > 0:12:08A little double-sided tape on the back.

0:12:08 > 0:12:12I want it to look like our buildings are falling over

0:12:12 > 0:12:16so we're going to place them in at a few jaunty angles.

0:12:16 > 0:12:19The smallest buildings being in the middle,

0:12:19 > 0:12:22working out to the biggest buildings on the outside.

0:12:22 > 0:12:26I'm going to add in a road. Stick that down over our buildings.

0:12:28 > 0:12:31Perfect! Now we need to add in our spider.

0:12:31 > 0:12:34I want him at a jaunty angle also, as if he's rearing up.

0:12:34 > 0:12:38All right, there you have it - the attack of the 50-foot spider!

0:12:38 > 0:12:41Now we can make our DIY even more deadly

0:12:41 > 0:12:46by adding a picture of me and Jo running away from a massive spider.

0:12:46 > 0:12:48Run for your lives!

0:12:48 > 0:12:49Nice one, Mike.

0:12:49 > 0:12:54Right, back to our giant spider model and a few finishing touches.

0:12:56 > 0:13:00And it looks like they're just about finished.

0:13:01 > 0:13:05This has got to be the biggest tarantula in the world,

0:13:05 > 0:13:07quite literally.

0:13:07 > 0:13:10The sculpture's great, it's massive, hairy and very scary.

0:13:10 > 0:13:12And it makes me feel so small!

0:13:12 > 0:13:15So, it's nearly time for the Big Reveal.

0:13:16 > 0:13:19I asked the Deadly Art team to recreate these killer shots

0:13:19 > 0:13:22and turn it into art.

0:13:22 > 0:13:24So, let's take a look at the finished result.

0:13:25 > 0:13:31Oh, wow, the spider is huge in real life and in art, it's even bigger!

0:13:31 > 0:13:35I love this giant deadly spider model with its realistic hairy legs,

0:13:35 > 0:13:38massive body and scary fangs

0:13:38 > 0:13:41and, now it's moving, it looks even more terrifying!

0:13:41 > 0:13:45Well done, team. Art doesn't get any deadlier than this.

0:13:45 > 0:13:47What an incredible creation.

0:13:47 > 0:13:49Make sure you try the doodle and the DIY

0:13:49 > 0:13:52and we'll see you next time for more Deadly Art.
