0:00:02 > 0:00:05My name's Steve Backshall and this is Deadly Art.

0:00:07 > 0:00:10I'm lucky enough to travel the world tracking deadly animals.

0:00:13 > 0:00:16But in this show my team of artists take my killer moment

0:00:19 > 0:00:21and turn it into art.

0:00:22 > 0:00:24And we'll reveal another unique creation.

0:00:26 > 0:00:29Along the way you'll get to pick up some tips, tricks

0:00:29 > 0:00:33and techniques so you can make some art yourself.

0:00:33 > 0:00:35This is no ordinary art show.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37This is Deadly Art.

0:00:41 > 0:00:43Coming up on Deadly Art, I'm in Brazil on the lookout

0:00:43 > 0:00:45for a weird, giant predator.

0:00:45 > 0:00:47I can't believe how close we are!

0:00:47 > 0:00:50Our team work on a superb killer piece of artwork.

0:00:50 > 0:00:52Let's get scrunching and sticking.

0:00:52 > 0:00:55And we'll show you another Deadly Doodle.

0:00:57 > 0:00:59Relative to its size, this odd-looking animal

0:00:59 > 0:01:02has one of the longest tongues in the whole animal kingdom.

0:01:02 > 0:01:06It also has a long nose, a bushy tail

0:01:06 > 0:01:10and its own in-built deadly weapons in the form of its claws.

0:01:10 > 0:01:13This is the giant anteater.

0:01:13 > 0:01:16It can smell its prey from several miles away.

0:01:16 > 0:01:18It's snack of choice is ants.

0:01:18 > 0:01:22It eats as many as 30,000 of them a day

0:01:22 > 0:01:25and it certainly knows how to hunt in style.

0:01:25 > 0:01:28Over to our artists, ready and waiting in the Deadly Art studio.

0:01:28 > 0:01:32Hey, I'm Mike, I'm a cartoon artist and I'm up for today's Deadly Art.

0:01:32 > 0:01:37I'm Jo, I'm a painter and a general mess-maker.

0:01:37 > 0:01:39Mike and Jo are representing the Deadly Art team

0:01:39 > 0:01:42who are always up for a challenge.

0:01:42 > 0:01:45And this is today's killer moment to inspire our artwork.

0:01:46 > 0:01:48Look at those super sharp claws,

0:01:48 > 0:01:51perfect for digging down into rock-hard termite mounds.

0:01:54 > 0:01:56Whoa...look at that fur.

0:01:56 > 0:01:58Yeah, it's really thick and bushy

0:01:58 > 0:02:01and they have those lovely unique markings.

0:02:01 > 0:02:04And as Steve says, anteaters are infamous for slurping up ants.

0:02:04 > 0:02:06So we'll have the predator and the prey.

0:02:06 > 0:02:08Love it! Let's get to work.

0:02:08 > 0:02:09Time for some more deadly art.

0:02:09 > 0:02:13We're doing a textured painting so we'll need lots of texture.

0:02:13 > 0:02:15Turning wallpaper into art?

0:02:15 > 0:02:16This will be interesting.

0:02:21 > 0:02:23The anteater is drawn on to the canvas

0:02:23 > 0:02:26and I'm tracing individual sections.

0:02:26 > 0:02:27Now it's time for the head.

0:02:33 > 0:02:35I've taken all of Jo's tracings.

0:02:35 > 0:02:37I've figured out this is the leg.

0:02:37 > 0:02:40I'm transferring them to all these different kinds of paper.

0:02:40 > 0:02:42We'll combine all these textures,

0:02:42 > 0:02:44stick them to our canvas to make our final painting.

0:02:44 > 0:02:46So I'd better get on with tracing the leg.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53Let's leave Mike and Jo in the opening stages

0:02:53 > 0:02:55of their astounding anteater

0:02:55 > 0:02:59and look back to when I was on the trail of this incredible animal.

0:02:59 > 0:03:02Brazil is nearly 35 times the size of the UK,

0:03:02 > 0:03:05with incredible views, so I decided to explore it from up high

0:03:05 > 0:03:07with my team and tour guide Dudu.

0:03:07 > 0:03:09Oh my goodness!

0:03:10 > 0:03:13This is an animal only found in South America and one

0:03:13 > 0:03:15I've been DYING to see

0:03:15 > 0:03:18because they're incredible and unusual predators.

0:03:18 > 0:03:22Oh, I can't believe how close we are. Look at that!

0:03:22 > 0:03:26This is ridiculous. He is right next to us.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31Right, I think we should leave him alone at the moment cos

0:03:31 > 0:03:33we're probably stressing him out a bit.

0:03:33 > 0:03:36I think our best way of getting close to a giant anteater

0:03:36 > 0:03:37is on foot.

0:03:37 > 0:03:39OK, Dudu?

0:03:39 > 0:03:41That was incredible!

0:03:41 > 0:03:43Absolutely unbelievable.

0:03:43 > 0:03:47But that's not the last glimpse we got of a giant anteater.

0:03:47 > 0:03:50More later. How are Jo and Mike getting on with their art version?

0:03:50 > 0:03:54All the sections of the anteater are cut out

0:03:54 > 0:03:58so I'm sticking them down to create a variety of textures.

0:03:58 > 0:04:00Those wallpaper cuttings add a beautiful texture.

0:04:03 > 0:04:08I've painted this background colour wash in this lovely forest green,

0:04:08 > 0:04:09but check this out...

0:04:09 > 0:04:13I've got a really bright orange which will be the basecoat for the anthill.

0:04:13 > 0:04:16While Jo works on the background, now it's your turn to be

0:04:16 > 0:04:18a budding Deadly Artist.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21Here's Mike with a Deadly Doodle.

0:04:21 > 0:04:25I'm going to show you how to do a Deadly Doodle of a giant anteater.

0:04:25 > 0:04:28All of our doodles are based on simple shapes

0:04:28 > 0:04:31and today our giant anteater is based simply on ovals.

0:04:31 > 0:04:34So we're going to start with a big oval for the body

0:04:34 > 0:04:36in the middle of our page.

0:04:36 > 0:04:38And a little oval for the head.

0:04:38 > 0:04:41And another big oval, that huge, bushy tail they have.

0:04:42 > 0:04:44Another oval for the back leg,

0:04:47 > 0:04:49one for the paw.

0:04:49 > 0:04:51There's another leg on the other side.

0:04:51 > 0:04:54I'll draw that with another oval.

0:04:54 > 0:04:58Then he has his front leg which is another three ovals.

0:04:58 > 0:05:01Now we're going to join all those shapes up.

0:05:02 > 0:05:05With a line and that's going to bring us

0:05:05 > 0:05:09to the nose which is just a cone coming off of that front oval.

0:05:09 > 0:05:11That's our pencil sketch all done.

0:05:11 > 0:05:15Let's go in with our black marker and add in some of the details.

0:05:15 > 0:05:18Add in those ears which are just two C shapes.

0:05:18 > 0:05:20Add in the little eye.

0:05:20 > 0:05:24And come down to the forehead, adding in the nose

0:05:24 > 0:05:28and a little snout at the end which look just like an elephant snout.

0:05:30 > 0:05:32There's the jaw, come back.

0:05:32 > 0:05:36Now all anteaters have these specific markings

0:05:36 > 0:05:40which start from the back of their jaw up to the middle of their back

0:05:40 > 0:05:43and comes back down their leg, like that.

0:05:43 > 0:05:46Which means we can draw in the rest of our leg.

0:05:46 > 0:05:49And anteaters also have these markings which kind of look

0:05:49 > 0:05:52like a furry wrist band on all of their legs so we'll draw that in.

0:05:54 > 0:05:57We'll go back over the back leg here.

0:05:57 > 0:06:01Go to the paw, come back around, add that back into the body.

0:06:03 > 0:06:07Fill in under his belly, and that paw which is in the background.

0:06:08 > 0:06:11Add another leg just tucked in behind that.

0:06:13 > 0:06:15Now I'll start with the fur on top of the body.

0:06:15 > 0:06:18I'm just using a scratchy line to go back over that.

0:06:19 > 0:06:22Come down to the big, bushy tail...

0:06:22 > 0:06:26You can use big zigzag lines here to get all that fur in there.

0:06:28 > 0:06:31Now we have to colour in our anteater correctly

0:06:31 > 0:06:32so we're going to use

0:06:32 > 0:06:35big black lines here on his back leg

0:06:35 > 0:06:37all the way down to his tummy.

0:06:37 > 0:06:40And also one just over his front leg.

0:06:42 > 0:06:44All right, he's looking good!

0:06:44 > 0:06:47Now we're going to add in some claws. Three on each paw.

0:06:50 > 0:06:52And of course he's missing one thing which is...

0:06:52 > 0:06:55his HUGE tongue.

0:06:55 > 0:06:58So we'll draw a big S shape coming out.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03If you want to add a tiny little ant trying to just scurry away,

0:07:03 > 0:07:06three circles... make him look a little bit scared.

0:07:08 > 0:07:11- How's that for a Deadly Doodle? - Good work, Mike.

0:07:11 > 0:07:13We went to Swindon on a Deadly Day Out

0:07:13 > 0:07:17and here's how you got on when you visited the Deadly Art tent.

0:07:17 > 0:07:19Go back over it like a little snake.

0:07:19 > 0:07:21ALL SHOUT: DEADLY!

0:07:23 > 0:07:26This is my doodle of an anteater.

0:07:26 > 0:07:28ALL SHOUT: DEADLY!

0:07:28 > 0:07:31This is my Deadly Doodle!

0:07:31 > 0:07:33This is my deadly anteater.

0:07:33 > 0:07:35The deadliest bit is the tongue.

0:07:35 > 0:07:39He uses his super long tongue and captures termites or ants.

0:07:39 > 0:07:41I particularly liked all of it.

0:07:41 > 0:07:44Deadly Art is great!

0:07:44 > 0:07:46Mine's deadly!

0:07:46 > 0:07:48- No, it's not! - It looks pretty deadly to me.

0:07:48 > 0:07:51Well done, you're all budding artists.

0:07:51 > 0:07:54Let's get back to the Deadly Art studio,

0:07:54 > 0:07:57and those fabulous textures are bringing our anteater to life.

0:07:57 > 0:08:01The fabric has been scrunched up and stuck on the tree and the foliage.

0:08:01 > 0:08:05I'm working on the ant hill, so let's get scrunching and sticking.

0:08:08 > 0:08:10All the blue colours are dry now

0:08:10 > 0:08:13so I'm going back over with some white paint to dry brush

0:08:13 > 0:08:15over those textures and really pick out some highlights.

0:08:15 > 0:08:18It's looking like the real thing.

0:08:18 > 0:08:21Back in Brazil, as far as real giant anteaters were concerned,

0:08:21 > 0:08:22we were on a roll.

0:08:28 > 0:08:31(Just come up to here.)

0:08:42 > 0:08:44(Look how close he is.)

0:08:44 > 0:08:47This has got to be one of the most remarkable,

0:08:47 > 0:08:50one of the most bizarre creatures in the whole world.

0:08:50 > 0:08:52This is absolutely perfect for us.

0:08:54 > 0:08:58Because the wind is coming from him towards us.

0:08:58 > 0:09:01He's got his snout right down an ant hole.

0:09:08 > 0:09:10Looks like he's feeding.

0:09:10 > 0:09:11He's actually even...

0:09:11 > 0:09:14looks like he's feeding around the branches of the tree.

0:09:14 > 0:09:17I just can't BELIEVE how close we're getting!

0:09:19 > 0:09:21'Despite all our care,

0:09:21 > 0:09:24'it was only a matter of time before the anteater caught a whiff of us.'

0:09:27 > 0:09:29Look at that.

0:09:29 > 0:09:33He's just stopping to check me out every five metres or so.

0:09:33 > 0:09:35Nose in the air. Look, there you go.

0:09:35 > 0:09:39He's got me and once he starts running it's all over.

0:09:40 > 0:09:42'A fascinating animal.

0:09:42 > 0:09:44'Now, out big art anteater has loads of texture

0:09:44 > 0:09:47'so here's Jo to show you some texturising tips.'

0:09:47 > 0:09:50I'm taking Mike's cool doodle of an anteater

0:09:50 > 0:09:52and make a wax rubbing which is really going to bring it to life

0:09:52 > 0:09:55and give it loads of texture.

0:09:55 > 0:09:58The first thing we'll do is take these sticks,

0:09:58 > 0:10:00which you can get in any craft store.

0:10:00 > 0:10:04Make a little pack together like this with a bit of tape on each end.

0:10:04 > 0:10:08Pack them together nice and tight

0:10:08 > 0:10:11and that's going to give us our fur texture.

0:10:11 > 0:10:15So just lie your drawing over the top of these sticks.

0:10:15 > 0:10:20I'll start with a grey wax crayon and just start colouring it in.

0:10:20 > 0:10:23Press nice and hard

0:10:23 > 0:10:27and as you can see, it gives you that lovely fur texture.

0:10:28 > 0:10:31Moving all the way down to the tip of his nose.

0:10:31 > 0:10:33Change it again, back down his tail.

0:10:37 > 0:10:40Now Jo's using a chunky brown crayon.

0:10:40 > 0:10:43Go in with a different colour, it gives it this cross-hatching effect.

0:10:43 > 0:10:46And the last colour I'm going to take is black

0:10:46 > 0:10:49to go underneath the anteater

0:10:49 > 0:10:52and really give him such shading and definition.

0:10:55 > 0:10:57So that's the rubbing part done.

0:10:57 > 0:11:01I'm going go get rid of my sticks and I'm going to go all over it

0:11:01 > 0:11:05with loads and loads of wax, really build up lots and lots of layers.

0:11:05 > 0:11:07Make sure you build up a really thick layer of wax

0:11:07 > 0:11:09cos we'll do something really cool.

0:11:09 > 0:11:11Almost there.

0:11:12 > 0:11:15Great, now it's really covered in wax.

0:11:15 > 0:11:17Now for the fun bit.

0:11:17 > 0:11:19I'm going to go in with a comb.

0:11:19 > 0:11:21I'm going to give him a hair do.

0:11:21 > 0:11:25This is going to scrape off loads of that wax

0:11:25 > 0:11:27and give another dimension to his fur.

0:11:27 > 0:11:31And as you can see I shows through the colour underneath.

0:11:33 > 0:11:34Now that is one furry anteater.

0:11:34 > 0:11:38The last thing I'll do is go back over all his markings

0:11:38 > 0:11:39with a marker pen.

0:11:39 > 0:11:43Drawing back in over his legs.

0:11:46 > 0:11:49So give it real definition.

0:11:49 > 0:11:52Don't worry if you go out of the edges cos you're going to cut it out.

0:11:54 > 0:11:57Then when you finish your anteater,

0:11:57 > 0:12:00you're going to stick it on to a piece of foam board

0:12:00 > 0:12:03and cut it out, just like we've done here.

0:12:03 > 0:12:06Pop it into his habitat.

0:12:06 > 0:12:08And we've put on a pipe cleaner for that long,

0:12:08 > 0:12:11slurpy tongue about to feed on all of those ants.

0:12:11 > 0:12:12Is that deadly enough for you?

0:12:12 > 0:12:16The pipe cleaner adds that finishing touch. Nice one, Jo.

0:12:16 > 0:12:17Back to the big art.

0:12:17 > 0:12:19Our painting's nearly finished,

0:12:19 > 0:12:22now it's time to add that super-slurpy textured tongue.

0:12:25 > 0:12:28But we're still missing a little something extra.

0:12:28 > 0:12:30- How's it going, Jo? - This is great.

0:12:30 > 0:12:32I'm making a lino cut of an ant so we can block print

0:12:32 > 0:12:35over and over again on our canvas to make our ant colony.

0:12:35 > 0:12:36I'd better make mine.

0:12:38 > 0:12:40Block printing is such a good way to replicate something

0:12:40 > 0:12:42lots of times in a piece of art.

0:12:45 > 0:12:49That ant look great. In fact all the ants look great.

0:12:49 > 0:12:52If only they knew a brutal predator was lurking close by.

0:12:55 > 0:12:59Well, the giant anteater looks just about finished to me.

0:12:59 > 0:13:01Let's see how it turned out. Oh, I love it!

0:13:01 > 0:13:04It's all about that killer moment. Our anteater is scraping the rock

0:13:04 > 0:13:07- and slurping up all those ants. - But it's Deadly ART

0:13:07 > 0:13:11and the texture in that collage really brings it to life.

0:13:11 > 0:13:13A living giant anteater right here in the studio.

0:13:13 > 0:13:16So it's nearly time for the Big Reveal.

0:13:16 > 0:13:19I asked the Deadly Art team to recreate these killer shots

0:13:19 > 0:13:21and turn them into art.

0:13:21 > 0:13:25So let's take a look at the finished result.

0:13:25 > 0:13:30This artwork really has frozen a glorious, colourful moment in time.

0:13:30 > 0:13:34It look like our anteater's just about to start hoovering up

0:13:34 > 0:13:37thousands and thousands of tasty ants.

0:13:37 > 0:13:39And the claws look mega sharp.

0:13:39 > 0:13:42I love all the different textures from the wallpapers,

0:13:42 > 0:13:43it really brings it to life.

0:13:43 > 0:13:45Nice work, team.

0:13:45 > 0:13:47What an incredible creation.

0:13:47 > 0:13:49Make sure you try the doodle and the DIY

0:13:49 > 0:13:52and we'll see you next time for more Deadly Art.
