0:00:02 > 0:00:05My name's Steve Backshall and this is Deadly Art.
0:00:07 > 0:00:10I'm lucky enough to travel the world tracking deadly animals.
0:00:13 > 0:00:16In this show, my team of artists take my killer moment...
0:00:19 > 0:00:21..and turn it into art.
0:00:21 > 0:00:24And we'll reveal another unique creation.
0:00:26 > 0:00:28Along the way, you'll get to pick up some tips,
0:00:28 > 0:00:31tricks and techniques so you can make some art yourself.
0:00:33 > 0:00:37This is no ordinary art show, this is Deadly Art.
0:00:41 > 0:00:42'Coming up on Deadly Art,
0:00:42 > 0:00:47'in South Africa, I go diving with some seriously deadly pack hunters.'
0:00:47 > 0:00:48That was too close!
0:00:48 > 0:00:52'The Deadly artists recreate another killer moment.'
0:00:52 > 0:00:53I love the sheer size of our sharks.
0:00:53 > 0:00:57'And we've got some cool art for you to try at home.'
0:01:00 > 0:01:06In today's programme, we'll meet the top fish in the sea, the shark.
0:01:06 > 0:01:08But we're dealing with a very special,
0:01:08 > 0:01:10particularly spectacular group of sharks
0:01:10 > 0:01:14that have an unbelievable strategy for catching their prey.
0:01:14 > 0:01:16These are the blacktip sharks.
0:01:16 > 0:01:20'All sharks are predators and will feed on other animals.
0:01:20 > 0:01:24'They have rows of teeth which are replaced throughout their life.
0:01:24 > 0:01:27'They may go through 30,000 teeth in a lifetime,
0:01:27 > 0:01:30'which means they're never short of a sharp tooth or two.'
0:01:30 > 0:01:33But what makes blacktip sharks particularly deadly
0:01:33 > 0:01:36is their ability to work together.
0:01:36 > 0:01:39'They're a team. They work almost like a pack of wolves
0:01:39 > 0:01:42'to make them even more efficient at catching their prey.
0:01:42 > 0:01:46Let's meet our artists in the Deadly Art studio.
0:01:46 > 0:01:49I'm Michelle and I just love working with different materials.
0:01:49 > 0:01:53I'm all about getting stuck in.
0:01:53 > 0:01:57Hey. I'm Mike. I'm a cartoon artist and I'm up for today's Deadly Art.
0:01:59 > 0:02:02'Mike and Michelle are representing the Deadly Art team,
0:02:02 > 0:02:04'who are always up for a challenge.'
0:02:04 > 0:02:08And here is the killer moment to inspire the artists.
0:02:08 > 0:02:12Just look at the speed of this shark shoal. It is incredible.
0:02:12 > 0:02:14So, how about this for a challenge?
0:02:14 > 0:02:18Not just one blacktip, but a whole shoal of them.
0:02:19 > 0:02:23Steve's killer moment is all about that shoal.
0:02:23 > 0:02:25So we definitely need more than one shark here.
0:02:25 > 0:02:29We could go with a painting, but in this one, we need movement.
0:02:29 > 0:02:31We want their size, we want them swimming around us
0:02:31 > 0:02:34to create that real shark experience.
0:02:34 > 0:02:37- So we're going to need this. - And we're going to need THESE.
0:02:37 > 0:02:40'Time for some more Deadly Art.'
0:02:40 > 0:02:42This is what our finished shark will look like.
0:02:42 > 0:02:44We'll create a whole load of them.
0:02:44 > 0:02:46We're going to make our sharks huge.
0:02:46 > 0:02:50And we're going to make them out of these sheets of styrene plastic.
0:02:50 > 0:02:53We'll draw shapes onto these sheets, cut them out,
0:02:53 > 0:02:56fold them and then fix them together to create a shark like this.
0:02:56 > 0:02:58As you can see, I've started drawing out the tail,
0:02:58 > 0:03:00which looks like a massive butterfly.
0:03:00 > 0:03:03But when you fold this over, you get your tailfin,
0:03:03 > 0:03:05just like on the model here.
0:03:05 > 0:03:08And then, if we move over to the head,
0:03:08 > 0:03:10we need to create a shape that looks just like this.
0:03:10 > 0:03:15I'll borrow that to use as my reference and start drawing the head.
0:03:15 > 0:03:17- I'll move onto the body.- OK.
0:03:17 > 0:03:20'I reckon these sharks are going to be huge and fearsome.
0:03:20 > 0:03:22'Judging by the paper model,
0:03:22 > 0:03:26'the largest sculptures are going to be brilliant.
0:03:26 > 0:03:30'We'll take a trip to South Africa, notorious for its wealth of sharks.
0:03:30 > 0:03:34'So on Deadly 60, we braved the stormy seas to find some.'
0:03:34 > 0:03:36Amazing!
0:03:36 > 0:03:38'So, what makes them deadly?
0:03:38 > 0:03:41'Well, the blacktip's body shape is like a blueprint
0:03:41 > 0:03:44'for an underwater hunter.'
0:03:44 > 0:03:47Look at the way the body's designed.
0:03:47 > 0:03:49Oh! Thanks a lot(!)
0:03:49 > 0:03:51It's like a torpedo.
0:03:51 > 0:03:55Sharp nose, slender, sleek lines.
0:03:55 > 0:03:59So perfect for cutting through the water at speed.
0:03:59 > 0:04:02'They're highly manoeuvrable,
0:04:02 > 0:04:04'and, just like wolves, they hunt in packs.
0:04:08 > 0:04:10'Working as a team, they sniff out their prey
0:04:10 > 0:04:13'with their scintillating sense of smell.
0:04:13 > 0:04:15'Corralling it into a tight shoal.
0:04:17 > 0:04:20'And from here on in, it's just chaos.
0:04:34 > 0:04:38'The sharks corkscrew through the fishy feast,
0:04:38 > 0:04:40'snatching with razor-sharp teeth,
0:04:40 > 0:04:43'making mincemeat of entire shoals of fish.
0:04:43 > 0:04:46'Each single shark is a formidable force,
0:04:46 > 0:04:49'but together as a team, they're unstoppable.'
0:04:56 > 0:04:58Whoa!
0:04:58 > 0:05:01'Despite their teeth, they know exactly what they're doing.
0:05:01 > 0:05:05'And my crew return to the boat all in one piece.
0:05:06 > 0:05:09'Now you can get involved. It's Deadly Doodle time.'
0:05:09 > 0:05:12I'll show you how to do a Deadly Doodle of a blacktip shark.
0:05:15 > 0:05:17First of all,
0:05:17 > 0:05:19you're going to draw curved lines that meet at the top.
0:05:28 > 0:05:31At the bottom, you're going to draw the strong fin.
0:05:39 > 0:05:43Next up, you need to draw a large fin at the top of the shark's head.
0:05:43 > 0:05:45And then one on the bottom.
0:05:48 > 0:05:51And now I'm going to draw in the deadly mouth.
0:05:51 > 0:05:55Now I'm drawing the fin on the side of the shark's body.
0:05:55 > 0:05:57That's another simple curved line
0:05:57 > 0:05:59going all the way back up to the top.
0:05:59 > 0:06:03Up at the top, we've got the three strong gills.
0:06:03 > 0:06:05These are just like arrow shapes.
0:06:07 > 0:06:08One, two, three.
0:06:08 > 0:06:10Now I'm going to draw in that menacing eye.
0:06:10 > 0:06:12Just a series of lines.
0:06:12 > 0:06:14The first one like an upside-down V.
0:06:14 > 0:06:17And for the last bit, it's like a triangle shape.
0:06:17 > 0:06:20Next, we're going to do the lower fins.
0:06:20 > 0:06:22So at the bottom, I'm drawing a teardrop shape,
0:06:22 > 0:06:25and then on the other fin, a hook,
0:06:25 > 0:06:28with a line coming down to meet the bottom fin.
0:06:28 > 0:06:31Now I'm going to draw the smaller fins on the lower part of the body.
0:06:31 > 0:06:35And these are just a series of U shapes.
0:06:38 > 0:06:40Once you've got all those details,
0:06:40 > 0:06:44put your pencil down and pick up your black marker pen.
0:06:44 > 0:06:48All I'm doing is going all along the outline...
0:06:48 > 0:06:50just following my lines all the way around.
0:06:50 > 0:06:53Down the bottom of the body.
0:06:53 > 0:06:56So I'm just going around with the black marker pen.
0:06:58 > 0:07:00Over our tail.
0:07:00 > 0:07:02And the bottom fin.
0:07:02 > 0:07:04Remember those sharks have that black tip.
0:07:04 > 0:07:08So with my marker pen, I'm just colouring it in.
0:07:08 > 0:07:11And now the same on the bottom.
0:07:11 > 0:07:14And again, with the lower fins, I'm going to do those tips.
0:07:17 > 0:07:21There we go. And now onto the really strong gills.
0:07:21 > 0:07:23And all I'm doing is bringing them up and out.
0:07:23 > 0:07:26So they look 3D and really rigid.
0:07:26 > 0:07:28So I'm just going over those gill lines,
0:07:28 > 0:07:32making them a lot darker and more sketchy.
0:07:32 > 0:07:34And finally, the teeth.
0:07:34 > 0:07:36We're going to go around the pencil line...
0:07:38 > 0:07:42..and now inside, I'll draw zigzags for those fierce, sharp teeth.
0:07:46 > 0:07:50And there you have your deadly blacktip shark.
0:07:50 > 0:07:54'That shark looks fierce! How did you get on drawing the doodle?
0:07:54 > 0:07:56'We went to Devon on a Deadly Day Out.
0:07:56 > 0:07:58'And here's all the action from the Deadly Art tent.'
0:07:58 > 0:08:00ALL: Deadly Art!
0:08:00 > 0:08:03BOTH: This is my Deadly Doodle!
0:08:03 > 0:08:05I've drawn a blacktip shark.
0:08:05 > 0:08:08Mine's a pinktip shark because I had a pink pen.
0:08:08 > 0:08:12My name is Tallulah and this is my Deadly Doodle.
0:08:12 > 0:08:14I'm very happy with my blacktip shark.
0:08:14 > 0:08:17Hi, I'm Ronnie. This is my blacktip shark.
0:08:17 > 0:08:21Yeah, I'm pretty happy with it. It's deadly, without a doubt.
0:08:21 > 0:08:23'They all look brilliant.
0:08:23 > 0:08:26'Keep on doodling. Let's get back to the Deadly Art studio.
0:08:26 > 0:08:28- 'Mike's onto the tail.'- Awesome!
0:08:28 > 0:08:32Our sharks are starting to take shape. Look how big they are!
0:08:32 > 0:08:34They look amazing. I'm going to leave you to it
0:08:34 > 0:08:36and focus on the shark's deadly mouth.
0:08:36 > 0:08:38I've got a piece of plastic here.
0:08:38 > 0:08:42I've cut it into a mouth shape, but I need to create an open jaw.
0:08:42 > 0:08:44So to do that, I'm using a heat gun
0:08:44 > 0:08:48and I'll bend it into position by melting this section here.
0:08:49 > 0:08:53Now, as you heat it, the plastic becomes a lot more pliable.
0:08:54 > 0:08:57So that's the jaw shape, and now for the fierce teeth.
0:08:57 > 0:09:02Again, I'm just using plastic and just cutting some triangles.
0:09:02 > 0:09:05They can be all different sizes. Snap these off.
0:09:05 > 0:09:07I'm going to use my heat gun again...
0:09:07 > 0:09:09to melt one to the other.
0:09:09 > 0:09:13'This is a great technique, but remember, don't try anything
0:09:13 > 0:09:17'you see in our Big Art sections. Mike and Michelle are professionals.
0:09:17 > 0:09:20'Let's take a breather. Mike's got a very stylish DIY for you.'
0:09:20 > 0:09:22I'm going to show you how to make
0:09:22 > 0:09:25this brilliant blacktip shark hoodie.
0:09:25 > 0:09:29With cool eyes, gills and massive fin
0:09:29 > 0:09:31and, of course, those razor-sharp teeth.
0:09:31 > 0:09:34First, you're going to need a hoodie. I've used a grey hoodie.
0:09:34 > 0:09:38You could use any colour you want, but get permission first
0:09:38 > 0:09:40because we're going to cut the hoodie up.
0:09:40 > 0:09:43Now, we're going to cut along the back seam of our hood.
0:09:43 > 0:09:46With scissors, cut through, following the seam.
0:09:46 > 0:09:48This is where the fin is going.
0:09:48 > 0:09:50Once you've cut that out, start on the fin.
0:09:50 > 0:09:53Grab two pieces of foam.
0:09:53 > 0:09:56The important thing is, this has to fit inside your hoodie.
0:09:56 > 0:09:59Make sure your hole is big enough. That should work perfectly.
0:09:59 > 0:10:01I'm going to glue these two pieces together.
0:10:01 > 0:10:04You could use craft glue, it just takes longer to dry.
0:10:04 > 0:10:07Once your fin is dry, you can insert the smaller fin.
0:10:07 > 0:10:11It's the same size, just a bit thinner, made out of cardboard.
0:10:11 > 0:10:15And when you slide that in, you can see it no longer flops around.
0:10:15 > 0:10:18Now the base of the fin. We've got another piece of foam,
0:10:18 > 0:10:19just in a rectangle shape,
0:10:19 > 0:10:22and we're going to glue that to the bottom, just like that.
0:10:22 > 0:10:24Fit this inside the hoodie.
0:10:24 > 0:10:28Make sure the fin is pointing the right way, like this.
0:10:28 > 0:10:31And you can see the base catches it so it doesn't come out.
0:10:31 > 0:10:34Now we have to glue the base of the fin inside the hoodie.
0:10:34 > 0:10:37It's really important to glue this fin down securely.
0:10:37 > 0:10:41Cos we want it to stand up really straight. OK. And there you go.
0:10:41 > 0:10:43You've got a fin sticking out of your hoodie.
0:10:43 > 0:10:45Now, these are called blacktip sharks
0:10:45 > 0:10:48because at the end of each fin, they have a little black marking.
0:10:48 > 0:10:50So I've got another piece of foam
0:10:50 > 0:10:52and I'm going to glue one to each side.
0:10:52 > 0:10:54Now we've got our black tip on our fin.
0:10:54 > 0:10:56So next thing we need to do
0:10:56 > 0:10:59is add in the facial features, just like this one.
0:10:59 > 0:11:02We've got the eye and we've also got these cool gills.
0:11:02 > 0:11:04I wanted mine to have a sweet, cool design,
0:11:04 > 0:11:08so I started with some really sharp angles.
0:11:08 > 0:11:10All I'm creating is a very urban,
0:11:10 > 0:11:12cool, street-looking eye.
0:11:12 > 0:11:14And then for the gills, I wanted to match those up
0:11:14 > 0:11:16with some really sharp-looking gills.
0:11:16 > 0:11:19When you've got that drawn out, use this as our template.
0:11:19 > 0:11:22Cut all these pieces out and transfer them to some foam.
0:11:22 > 0:11:25I've got my black foam eye and got the white bit behind.
0:11:25 > 0:11:30So we're going to glue our black eye down to our white piece behind.
0:11:30 > 0:11:33So you're going to need two of those. Now you've got your two deadly eyes.
0:11:33 > 0:11:34Cool, right?
0:11:34 > 0:11:38Now we need to glue them down to the hoodie, one on each side.
0:11:38 > 0:11:40Now we're going to glue down our gills.
0:11:40 > 0:11:43So I've got three gills for each side.
0:11:43 > 0:11:46Now for the deadly teeth. Start with the red piece of foam.
0:11:46 > 0:11:48We're going to create a gum and teeth sandwich.
0:11:48 > 0:11:51So we've got red gums, white teeth.
0:11:51 > 0:11:54And then on the other side, we've got more red gums.
0:11:54 > 0:11:56Now we have to glue it together.
0:11:56 > 0:12:00I'll make my teeth different sizes. A few short ones, a few long ones,
0:12:00 > 0:12:02but all deadly sharp.
0:12:02 > 0:12:05You've got a line of gnashers there.
0:12:05 > 0:12:07OK. We're going to glue this inside the hood now.
0:12:07 > 0:12:10Glue the middle to the top of your hood.
0:12:10 > 0:12:13Once that's secure, start gluing down the gums.
0:12:13 > 0:12:16That's your blacktip shark hoodie all finished,
0:12:16 > 0:12:21complete with blacktip fin, eyes, gills and those deadly teeth.
0:12:21 > 0:12:24Make sure you give it a try at home. Now, I'm off for a bit to eat.
0:12:24 > 0:12:28'The coolest DIY we've ever done. Back to the Big Art.
0:12:28 > 0:12:30'So, what do you think so far?
0:12:30 > 0:12:33'I reckon it's going to be great.'
0:12:33 > 0:12:38Now the plastic's nice and soft, I'm just pushing down through the lines.
0:12:38 > 0:12:41And I'm just going to do the same with the rest.
0:12:41 > 0:12:43'I love this!'
0:12:45 > 0:12:48That's another Deadly Art finished, and they look great!
0:12:48 > 0:12:49But for me, it's the head.
0:12:49 > 0:12:52The way we melted the plastic around the eyes and gills,
0:12:52 > 0:12:56- it makes them really cool textures. - I love the sheer size of our sharks
0:12:56 > 0:12:59and the fact we made more than one of them surrounding us,
0:12:59 > 0:13:01just like when Steve came face-to-face
0:13:01 > 0:13:03with a whole shoal of blacktips. Awesome!
0:13:03 > 0:13:07'It's nearly time for the big reveal. I asked the Deadly Art team
0:13:07 > 0:13:10'to recreate these killer shots and turn them into art.
0:13:10 > 0:13:13'So let's take a look at the finished result.
0:13:17 > 0:13:18'That is so dramatic!
0:13:18 > 0:13:21'The fact that it's a mobile and it's always on the move,
0:13:21 > 0:13:25'circling round and round, represents the pack superbly well.
0:13:25 > 0:13:28'They're reflecting the blue exactly as the sharks would do
0:13:28 > 0:13:30'under the surface of the water.
0:13:30 > 0:13:33'I love the details like the scary teeth.
0:13:33 > 0:13:35'They're just like the real thing.
0:13:35 > 0:13:39'Menacing, mobile, magic! Nice work, team.
0:13:39 > 0:13:42'Art doesn't get any deadlier than this.'
0:13:42 > 0:13:44That was a truly sublime work of art.
0:13:44 > 0:13:46Make sure you try the Doodle and the DIY
0:13:46 > 0:13:50and we'll see you next time for more Deadly Art.
