0:00:02 > 0:00:04I'm Steve Backshall. And this is Deadly Art.
0:00:07 > 0:00:10I'm lucky to travel the world, tracking deadly animals.
0:00:12 > 0:00:16But in this show, my artists take my Killer Moments...
0:00:19 > 0:00:21..and turn it into art.
0:00:21 > 0:00:24And we'll reveal another unique creation.
0:00:26 > 0:00:29You'll pick up tips, tricks and techniques,
0:00:29 > 0:00:33so you can make some art yourself.
0:00:33 > 0:00:37This is no ordinary art show. This is Deadly Art.
0:00:38 > 0:00:41'Coming up on Deadly Art,
0:00:41 > 0:00:44'I'm in South Africa, looking for top predators.'
0:00:44 > 0:00:47We've got a fantastic view!
0:00:47 > 0:00:51'The Deadly Artists paint an exciting Killer Moment.'
0:00:51 > 0:00:52Check out those teeth!
0:00:52 > 0:00:55'And we have a cool Deadly Doodle.'
0:00:59 > 0:01:03The plains of Africa may be known for incredibly fearsome felines.
0:01:03 > 0:01:06The cat family. The lions, the leopards.
0:01:06 > 0:01:10But another predator found there is perhaps even more efficient,
0:01:10 > 0:01:13and actually comes from the dog family.
0:01:13 > 0:01:16This is the African hunting dog.
0:01:16 > 0:01:18African hunting dogs form packs
0:01:18 > 0:01:21that could be 40 animals strong.
0:01:21 > 0:01:24But it's the lead pair who take charge of running the pack,
0:01:24 > 0:01:27and they hunt using teamwork.
0:01:27 > 0:01:31Their scientific name means "painted wolf," and you can see why.
0:01:31 > 0:01:34They look like a mix of a wolf and a dog.
0:01:34 > 0:01:38The markings down their back are unique to each individual.
0:01:38 > 0:01:42They can hunt prey much larger than they are.
0:01:42 > 0:01:44Antelope, zebra, wildebeest.
0:01:44 > 0:01:48They can reach 60 kilometres an hour.
0:01:48 > 0:01:51But it's their stamina that really sets them apart.
0:01:51 > 0:01:56I'll explain more later. First, here's today's Deadly Art team.
0:01:56 > 0:02:00I'm Jo. I'm painter and a general mess maker.
0:02:00 > 0:02:04I'm Michelle, and I love working with different materials.
0:02:04 > 0:02:06I'm all about getting stuck in.
0:02:06 > 0:02:11The Deadly Art team are always up for a challenge.
0:02:11 > 0:02:15Here are today's Killer Moments to inspire their art.
0:02:15 > 0:02:19The dogs can chase their prey down for miles and miles,
0:02:19 > 0:02:22surrounding or ambushing them.
0:02:22 > 0:02:25They're very efficient predators.
0:02:25 > 0:02:29An unbelievable amount of hunts result in success.
0:02:29 > 0:02:32Time for some more Deadly Art.
0:02:32 > 0:02:34I love that this is the "painted wolf."
0:02:34 > 0:02:36Perfect for Deadly Art.
0:02:36 > 0:02:39The way they run in packs, chasing their prey,
0:02:39 > 0:02:42makes a great Killer Moment.
0:02:42 > 0:02:45A dramatic, comic book, action-packed painting would be great.
0:02:45 > 0:02:48- Sounds good.- Let's do it.
0:02:51 > 0:02:55A comic book tells a story. Each part is in a different box.
0:02:55 > 0:02:58Our three canvasses each will represent
0:02:58 > 0:03:00different parts of our story.
0:03:00 > 0:03:04But it's not always in a straight order.
0:03:04 > 0:03:07We'll start here with the first canvas, move here,
0:03:07 > 0:03:09and finish here for the end.
0:03:11 > 0:03:15I'm starting on the first canvas, the hunting pack.
0:03:15 > 0:03:19They'll be silhouetted against a moody purple sky.
0:03:19 > 0:03:21That'll be the ground.
0:03:21 > 0:03:24That, the sky. Let's start on the first dog.
0:03:29 > 0:03:33Our second canvas is all drawn out.
0:03:33 > 0:03:35A close-up portrait of our hunting dog.
0:03:35 > 0:03:38Next, I'll add in the vibrant-coloured sky
0:03:38 > 0:03:40like in comic books.
0:03:40 > 0:03:42Let's see our three blank canvasses
0:03:42 > 0:03:45evolve into fantastic Deadly Art.
0:03:45 > 0:03:47'Let's head over to Africa,
0:03:47 > 0:03:51'where the Deadly 60 crew and I were looking for our very own
0:03:51 > 0:03:53'African Hunting Dogs.'
0:03:53 > 0:03:56If we're to find wild dogs, it'll be like this.
0:03:56 > 0:04:00Oh, look at that!
0:04:00 > 0:04:02Oh, hippos are back!
0:04:02 > 0:04:04This is beautiful.
0:04:04 > 0:04:07A herd of elephant, drinking at the water.
0:04:10 > 0:04:12There's some real youngsters with them.
0:04:15 > 0:04:18We saw pretty much
0:04:18 > 0:04:21every species of animal you can find here,
0:04:21 > 0:04:22but no dogs.
0:04:22 > 0:04:25'We were unlucky in South Africa,
0:04:25 > 0:04:29'but this footage shows why they're incredible predators.
0:04:29 > 0:04:32'Working as a team, they locate their prey.'
0:04:32 > 0:04:36Their camouflage lets them get close, but, unlike the cats.
0:04:36 > 0:04:39they don't hope to pounce on their victim.
0:04:40 > 0:04:43They're happy for the prey to run.
0:04:43 > 0:04:47The teams spread out, and the chase begins.
0:04:47 > 0:04:51Their incredible powers of endurance soon become apparent.
0:04:51 > 0:04:55Bodies adapted to run in the ferocious heat of the savannah,
0:04:55 > 0:04:58they can chase prey for up to four hours
0:04:58 > 0:05:04and can reach an awesome speed of nearly 50 kilometres per hour.
0:05:06 > 0:05:10They are the true terminators of the animal world,
0:05:10 > 0:05:12never stopping.
0:05:12 > 0:05:15Their prey finally succumbs.
0:05:15 > 0:05:18And that death-dealing dog bite
0:05:18 > 0:05:20makes short work
0:05:20 > 0:05:23of flesh and bone.
0:05:23 > 0:05:27A super-athletic display of strength and stamina.
0:05:27 > 0:05:29Let's head back to the Deadly Art studio now.
0:05:29 > 0:05:33It's great to see Jo and Michelle painting.
0:05:33 > 0:05:36Classic art skills, Deadly style.
0:05:36 > 0:05:39The silhouettes really work against this colour.
0:05:39 > 0:05:43It creates drama. Which is great, as we're telling a story.
0:05:43 > 0:05:45The purples look great,
0:05:45 > 0:05:48and set the scene in our hunting dog artwork.
0:05:50 > 0:05:55The leg's finished. I'll fill in the rest of the fur with block colour.
0:05:55 > 0:06:00Now YOU can get involved. Jo will show you a Deadly Doodle.
0:06:00 > 0:06:03I'm going to show you how to draw and paint
0:06:03 > 0:06:06this African hunting dog Deadly Doodle.
0:06:07 > 0:06:09We'll start with some basic shapes.
0:06:09 > 0:06:12My first one is a circle,
0:06:12 > 0:06:15near the centre of the page.
0:06:18 > 0:06:20Off the top of that,
0:06:20 > 0:06:23round circles.
0:06:24 > 0:06:27Then a baguette, coming out the top.
0:06:27 > 0:06:30Then, a rounded triangle,
0:06:30 > 0:06:32for its nose.
0:06:33 > 0:06:35Then, another triangle,
0:06:35 > 0:06:38coming off that, for its mouth.
0:06:38 > 0:06:42Now, we'll do a teardrop shape, upside down, coming from those eyes.
0:06:42 > 0:06:45Then, from the top of your baguette,
0:06:45 > 0:06:49go all the way down to a point at the bottom, like that.
0:06:49 > 0:06:52That will create the dog's head.
0:06:52 > 0:06:54Then for those huge ears.
0:06:54 > 0:06:57Big, round circles.
0:06:57 > 0:06:59Now for those eyes,
0:06:59 > 0:07:03which are two diagonal lines, with circles underneath them.
0:07:03 > 0:07:05Two more lines, up from the nose.
0:07:05 > 0:07:08That's the basic shapes.
0:07:08 > 0:07:10Now with the black marker pen.
0:07:13 > 0:07:16Just going over those lines, and then back around.
0:07:16 > 0:07:19to make his snout.
0:07:19 > 0:07:22Following those lines up to the nose
0:07:22 > 0:07:24and give it a bit more shape.
0:07:24 > 0:07:26Colour that in.
0:07:26 > 0:07:29Nice black, wet nose.
0:07:29 > 0:07:34Now, lots of shaggy lines, to make him really furry.
0:07:34 > 0:07:36More shaggy lines.
0:07:36 > 0:07:39That ruff around his neck.
0:07:39 > 0:07:42That amazing shaggy fur around his head.
0:07:42 > 0:07:46I'm going over those guide lines for the ears.
0:07:46 > 0:07:49A little definition on the inside.
0:07:49 > 0:07:52Now for those eyes.
0:07:52 > 0:07:55A nice dark pupil.
0:07:55 > 0:07:59Give him a bit of a bottom lip. Colour his mouth.
0:07:59 > 0:08:01And that's the doodle done.
0:08:01 > 0:08:03I'll give him some colour.
0:08:03 > 0:08:05I'll start with this dark blue paint.
0:08:05 > 0:08:09I'll, really roughly, paint him in.
0:08:09 > 0:08:12And give him a bit of shading inside his ear.
0:08:12 > 0:08:15Now, I'll take some yellow paint.
0:08:15 > 0:08:20As he's so shaggy, I'm being really rough with the paint.
0:08:24 > 0:08:26Still a bit of shading.
0:08:26 > 0:08:31There you have one African hunting dog. Deadly!
0:08:31 > 0:08:34The dog looks so beautiful!
0:08:34 > 0:08:36How did some of you get on?
0:08:36 > 0:08:39We went to Port Talbot on a Deadly Day Out.
0:08:39 > 0:08:43Here's all the action from the Deadly Art tent.
0:08:43 > 0:08:46THEY SHOUT
0:08:46 > 0:08:50I'm Charlie, and this is my African hunting dog.
0:08:50 > 0:08:54Hello, my name's Megan. This is my African hunting dog.
0:08:54 > 0:08:57My favourite bit was drawing the eyes.
0:08:57 > 0:09:00They look good on the African hunting dog.
0:09:00 > 0:09:03They look BRILLIANT! Keep on doodling.
0:09:03 > 0:09:05Let's get back to the Deadly Art studio.
0:09:05 > 0:09:08Time to colour in that fierce-looking face.
0:09:08 > 0:09:11I've just finished this dog's mouth.
0:09:11 > 0:09:14On to an even bigger mouth. Check out those teeth!
0:09:14 > 0:09:16This is the final canvas.
0:09:16 > 0:09:19As you can see, the African hunting dog is fierce!
0:09:19 > 0:09:21I better get on with the canines.
0:09:32 > 0:09:34We'll leave Jo painting.
0:09:34 > 0:09:36Michelle has a super DIY for you.
0:09:36 > 0:09:41I'll show you how to a make a deadly African hunting dog head.
0:09:41 > 0:09:43Believe it or not, this is made
0:09:43 > 0:09:46from an old shoe, some foam, and some fur.
0:09:46 > 0:09:50With your shoe, get permission first.
0:09:50 > 0:09:53I've grabbed the tongue from the inside of the shoe,
0:09:53 > 0:09:57brought it to the outside, and stuck it down to the edges.
0:09:57 > 0:09:59This will act as our nose, later on.
0:09:59 > 0:10:02Next, I have some foam.
0:10:02 > 0:10:05I've traced round the outside of the shoe
0:10:05 > 0:10:08and cut a hole in the middle.
0:10:08 > 0:10:11You just put your shoe back in the hole.
0:10:11 > 0:10:15This acts as our framework for the hunting dog's head.
0:10:15 > 0:10:18Obviously, we need a bit of fur on the face.
0:10:18 > 0:10:22I have some nice brown fur here. With the same technique,
0:10:22 > 0:10:25cut a hole in the middle, and this will fit securely
0:10:25 > 0:10:27on top of the foam.
0:10:27 > 0:10:31We have a nice "M" shape.
0:10:31 > 0:10:33The same as the one on here.
0:10:33 > 0:10:37Later, our eye sockets will fit in between.
0:10:38 > 0:10:42To make it come to life a bit more,
0:10:42 > 0:10:46I've got some black fur and cut it into a "U" shape.
0:10:46 > 0:10:48It looks like a beard.
0:10:48 > 0:10:52This really helps with the tones of fur on the dog.
0:10:52 > 0:10:55Another distinctive marking is this black strip
0:10:55 > 0:10:57at the top of the forehead.
0:10:57 > 0:11:00This will stick right here.
0:11:00 > 0:11:03Once that's stuck down, it looks like this.
0:11:03 > 0:11:07I admit it doesn't look very deadly yet,
0:11:07 > 0:11:10so we'll start adding in all the deadly features.
0:11:10 > 0:11:13To create your ears,
0:11:13 > 0:11:16draw out a nice, large teardrop shape.
0:11:16 > 0:11:17Do the same with your fur.
0:11:17 > 0:11:19For the inner part of the ear,
0:11:19 > 0:11:22I have lighter brown fur. Stick it on.
0:11:22 > 0:11:24Make another, and attach.
0:11:24 > 0:11:26Your face is really coming together,
0:11:26 > 0:11:28but it's all about the deadly details.
0:11:28 > 0:11:31So, let's stick on some eyes.
0:11:31 > 0:11:34I have a polystyrene ball, cut in half.
0:11:34 > 0:11:36I'm blending this up.
0:11:36 > 0:11:40We're going to draw a large circle in the centre.
0:11:40 > 0:11:43Then, do a smaller circle
0:11:43 > 0:11:45inside that one.
0:11:45 > 0:11:47Colour it in.
0:11:47 > 0:11:49There we go. One deadly eye.
0:11:49 > 0:11:51We'll stick them on.
0:11:51 > 0:11:54There we go. This guy has really mad eyes!
0:11:54 > 0:11:58Next, we need to do the eyelids.
0:11:58 > 0:12:02Once you've stuck the eyelids on, to bring the nose to life a bit more,
0:12:02 > 0:12:06stick it on the tongue of your shoe.
0:12:06 > 0:12:08In the holes where the laces were,
0:12:08 > 0:12:12I'll thread some pipe cleaners through
0:12:12 > 0:12:13both the holes.
0:12:13 > 0:12:15Because pipe cleaners are bendy,
0:12:15 > 0:12:18you can mould them.
0:12:18 > 0:12:22I know what you're thinking. We need some nice, sharp teeth.
0:12:22 > 0:12:24These are in zigzag shapes.
0:12:24 > 0:12:27You have some glue along the top.
0:12:27 > 0:12:29Stick those in.
0:12:29 > 0:12:32It's really coming to life now.
0:12:32 > 0:12:35There's one final thing to put on it.
0:12:35 > 0:12:38That's a nice, large pink tongue.
0:12:38 > 0:12:43Here you have your seriously deadly African hunting dog head.
0:12:43 > 0:12:47There we have it. A DIY from an old shoe. Good stuff!
0:12:47 > 0:12:50Back to the Big Art. They've finished.
0:12:50 > 0:12:54I love this Deadly Art as it tells a story,
0:12:54 > 0:12:56and the dogs look super-fierce.
0:12:56 > 0:13:00For me, the contrasting colours look so vivid.
0:13:00 > 0:13:03They'll look great, hung together later.
0:13:03 > 0:13:06It's nearly time for the Big Reveal.
0:13:06 > 0:13:10I asked the team to recreate these killer shots
0:13:10 > 0:13:14and turn it into art.
0:13:14 > 0:13:17Let's look at the finished result.
0:13:17 > 0:13:20The art team set out to make a comic book
0:13:20 > 0:13:23based on the hunting technique of these incredible dogs.
0:13:23 > 0:13:25They've done it!
0:13:25 > 0:13:29This could be one of the fiercest paintings we've done yet.
0:13:29 > 0:13:32That dog looks ferocious!
0:13:32 > 0:13:35It really shows up the attitude, the style,
0:13:35 > 0:13:38endurance and persistence of the hunting dog.
0:13:39 > 0:13:43Nice work. Art doesn't get any deadlier than this.
0:13:43 > 0:13:45What an incredible creation.
0:13:45 > 0:13:48Make sure you try the doodle and the DIY.
0:13:48 > 0:13:51We'll see you next time for more Deadly Art.
0:14:03 > 0:14:06Subtitles by Red Bee Media Ltd
