0:00:02 > 0:00:04My name's Steve Backshall and this is Deadly Art.

0:00:07 > 0:00:10I'm lucky enough to travel the world tracking deadly animals.

0:00:13 > 0:00:16In this show, my team of artists take my killer moments...

0:00:19 > 0:00:21..and turn it into art.

0:00:22 > 0:00:24'We'll reveal another unique creation.

0:00:26 > 0:00:29'Along the way, you'll get to pick up tips, tricks and techniques

0:00:29 > 0:00:31'so you can make some art yourself.

0:00:33 > 0:00:36'This is no ordinary art show, this is Deadly Art.

0:00:41 > 0:00:43'Coming up on Deadly Art,

0:00:43 > 0:00:46'I'm nose-to-nose with today's lethal beast.'

0:00:46 > 0:00:48If I got bitten, it would not be a good day.

0:00:48 > 0:00:52'The deadly artists make another cool, killer work of art.'

0:00:52 > 0:00:54Nothing's going to get in his way!

0:00:54 > 0:00:57'And we'll show you how to draw another Deadly Doodle.'

0:00:58 > 0:01:02Today's Deadly Art animal is the monitor lizard.

0:01:02 > 0:01:06'Monitor lizards are Jurassic, quite literally.

0:01:06 > 0:01:10'Their ancestors rubbed noses with dinosaurs 100 million years ago.

0:01:10 > 0:01:13'What's allowed these extraordinary creatures

0:01:13 > 0:01:15'to survive on earth for so long?

0:01:15 > 0:01:18'They're hard as nails, with an incredible array of weapons.

0:01:18 > 0:01:21'They can climb, they can swim, they can run,

0:01:21 > 0:01:25'they have very, very sharp teeth, sharp claws and a whip-like tail.'

0:01:27 > 0:01:29They're scared of absolutely nothing.

0:01:29 > 0:01:33'Another Deadly Art challenge for today's team. Let's meet them.'

0:01:33 > 0:01:35Hey. I'm Mike. I'm a cartoon artist.

0:01:35 > 0:01:37And I'm up for today's Deadly Art.

0:01:38 > 0:01:42I'm Michelle and I just love working with different materials.

0:01:42 > 0:01:44'Mike and Michelle represent the Deadly Art team,

0:01:44 > 0:01:47'who are always up for a challenge.

0:01:47 > 0:01:50'Here are the killer shots to inspire the artwork.'

0:01:54 > 0:01:58They're cheeky, fearless and they've got a strong, bulky body.

0:01:58 > 0:02:01And their skin, it's a lovely scaly pattern with loads of texture.

0:02:01 > 0:02:03- This is going to be fun. - You know it!

0:02:03 > 0:02:06'Time for some more Deadly Art.'

0:02:06 > 0:02:08Thanks, Michelle.

0:02:08 > 0:02:11Our monitor lizard is going to be huge.

0:02:11 > 0:02:14So you need to cut it out of loads of sections of polystyrene.

0:02:16 > 0:02:19So we've got our monitor lizard cut out in a template,

0:02:19 > 0:02:20now I just need to attach it.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23That's the head and body. Check out this tail.

0:02:24 > 0:02:27Look how long he's going to be!

0:02:27 > 0:02:30'While Mike and Michelle get on, let's take a look at the time

0:02:30 > 0:02:33'I travelled to Australia with the Deadly 60 crew.

0:02:33 > 0:02:35'I was about to come face-to-face

0:02:35 > 0:02:37'with their fiercest reptile.'

0:02:37 > 0:02:39It was thought until very recently there was only

0:02:39 > 0:02:42a couple of lizards in the world that were truly venomous.

0:02:42 > 0:02:45But it turns out that this guy here

0:02:45 > 0:02:48has truly venomous spit.

0:02:48 > 0:02:51And, er...if I got bitten,

0:02:51 > 0:02:54it would not be a good day for me.

0:02:59 > 0:03:03I can almost smell your breath from here, mate.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06He can smell yours as well, Steve.

0:03:07 > 0:03:12He's just snuffling around with his tongue in the leaf litter.

0:03:12 > 0:03:14His tongue just flicked all up my arm.

0:03:14 > 0:03:19Around here, reptiles really are the top predators.

0:03:19 > 0:03:21The crocodiles, monitor lizards,

0:03:21 > 0:03:25they kind of take the place of the lions of the African plains.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28He's a living dinosaur.

0:03:28 > 0:03:31With a venomous bite, a whip for a tail

0:03:31 > 0:03:32and tearing talons.

0:03:32 > 0:03:36'Incredible! Let's head back to the Deadly Art studio

0:03:36 > 0:03:39'to see how the Big Art is getting on. Lots of stones?'

0:03:39 > 0:03:41When all our pebbles are put together,

0:03:41 > 0:03:45they look like the scaly skin of our lizard.

0:03:45 > 0:03:48We want to capture that in a mould. This takes a while to set.

0:03:48 > 0:03:51Once it has done, you can pull the silicone away from the pebbles

0:03:51 > 0:03:55and you're left with an amazing textured mould.

0:03:55 > 0:03:57Once this is all pulled off,

0:03:57 > 0:04:00the finished result looks like this.

0:04:00 > 0:04:02It's fantastic!

0:04:02 > 0:04:06Next up, I need to brush a layer of latex over the top of this mould.

0:04:06 > 0:04:09Once the latex has set, we'll be able t pull it away

0:04:09 > 0:04:12and we'll be left with a beautiful pebbly skin.

0:04:12 > 0:04:14'Wow! What a great technique

0:04:14 > 0:04:16'to create rough, scaly monitor lizard skin.'

0:04:16 > 0:04:19I've made a start cutting out our monitor lizard.

0:04:19 > 0:04:22I'm using hot wire to cut all around our template.

0:04:22 > 0:04:24Once the pieces are cut out,

0:04:24 > 0:04:26we can put them together and shape them.

0:04:31 > 0:04:35'It's so cool seeing polystyrene models shaped with hot wires.

0:04:35 > 0:04:39'But our artists are professionals. Don't try anything

0:04:39 > 0:04:42'you see them do in the Big Art challenges.

0:04:46 > 0:04:47'Well, it's all on track,

0:04:47 > 0:04:51'so Mike's going to show you a Deadly Doodle.'

0:04:51 > 0:04:55I'm going to show you how to draw this deadly monitor lizard.

0:04:55 > 0:04:58As always, you start with simple shapes.

0:04:58 > 0:05:01We're going to start with a circle for the head.

0:05:01 > 0:05:03Then I'm going to draw his mouth.

0:05:03 > 0:05:05I'm just going to make a cone coming off the head.

0:05:05 > 0:05:09For the body, we want him looking like he's lying really flat.

0:05:09 > 0:05:13So we're going to draw a diamond coming out...

0:05:13 > 0:05:16from the back of his head.

0:05:16 > 0:05:19Now for the legs. So there's one leg that's tucked up behind his head.

0:05:19 > 0:05:22Draw a circle for his paw.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25There's one out to the side. A big paw there.

0:05:25 > 0:05:29There's one tucked up over here

0:05:29 > 0:05:32and there's another one coming down.

0:05:32 > 0:05:34And it also has a big paw.

0:05:34 > 0:05:38Now, for the tail, I'm going to start at this back leg...

0:05:38 > 0:05:41and come in a really big, curving line.

0:05:41 > 0:05:44Like a big road, it's going to start small

0:05:44 > 0:05:46and get bigger as it comes back around.

0:05:46 > 0:05:49OK. That's your pencil sketch.

0:05:49 > 0:05:51Grab a black marker and start with all the details.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54Work from the tail forward.

0:05:54 > 0:05:56Go back over the tail,

0:05:56 > 0:05:58wrap it around to the leg.

0:05:58 > 0:06:01The top of the tail, keep going over your line,

0:06:01 > 0:06:03but this time, go back over,

0:06:03 > 0:06:06all the way down for your belly.

0:06:06 > 0:06:10Draw in that back leg, move over to this back leg

0:06:10 > 0:06:12and go back over that oval.

0:06:12 > 0:06:15Draw the back side of his belly here,

0:06:15 > 0:06:18then draw in his big paws on the back.

0:06:20 > 0:06:24Monitor lizards have massive claws at the end of their paws.

0:06:27 > 0:06:30So we'll colour those in as we go.

0:06:35 > 0:06:39Now we're going to go back over this oval for the front leg.

0:06:39 > 0:06:43And this time, draw your paw even bigger because it's closer to us.

0:06:45 > 0:06:47Look at those sharp claws.

0:06:47 > 0:06:49We'll draw in part of his neck.

0:06:51 > 0:06:54Draw another front leg.

0:06:54 > 0:06:56A big paw again.

0:07:01 > 0:07:06Monitor lizards are really strong, so I'll give him muscles on this arm.

0:07:06 > 0:07:09Colour in your claws again.

0:07:10 > 0:07:12Deadly!

0:07:13 > 0:07:17Now for the head. Start with the neck.

0:07:17 > 0:07:19Wrap that around to the mouth.

0:07:21 > 0:07:24Come around again for the other side.

0:07:26 > 0:07:30Now we'll draw in that forked tongue just sticking out to the side.

0:07:32 > 0:07:33Now for those menacing eyes.

0:07:33 > 0:07:36Mark out where they go.

0:07:37 > 0:07:38Just like that.

0:07:38 > 0:07:42Draw them like that to make them look deadly.

0:07:42 > 0:07:44Two C shapes inside.

0:07:44 > 0:07:47Then give him some angry eyebrows.

0:07:49 > 0:07:51Split his head down the middle.

0:07:51 > 0:07:55To make him even more deadly, add some wrinkles around his eyes.

0:07:55 > 0:07:58Oh, yeah! Add in that nose.

0:07:58 > 0:08:00And two nostrils.

0:08:00 > 0:08:03One very deadly monitor lizard.

0:08:03 > 0:08:06'A full-on, realistic monitor lizard.

0:08:06 > 0:08:09'How did some of you get on drawing this doodle?

0:08:09 > 0:08:11'We went to Glasgow on a Deadly Day Out.

0:08:11 > 0:08:13'Here's all the action from the Deadly Art tent.'

0:08:16 > 0:08:18ALL: Deadly!

0:08:18 > 0:08:22Here is my Deadly Doodle of a monitor lizard.

0:08:22 > 0:08:24I'm not normally very good at drawing.

0:08:24 > 0:08:26I think it's turned out really well.

0:08:26 > 0:08:29I'm David and this is my Deadly Doodle!

0:08:29 > 0:08:33First of all, I thought it was going to be pretty tricky,

0:08:33 > 0:08:36but when I got to the marker, it got easier and easier.

0:08:36 > 0:08:38'Loving your lizards!

0:08:38 > 0:08:41'Now let's get back to the Deadly Art studio.'

0:08:43 > 0:08:46We've used smaller bits of poly on this awesome monitor lizard

0:08:46 > 0:08:49to make up the legs and feet. I've got the last foot here.

0:08:49 > 0:08:53Just needs a final bit of sanding, then I'll pop it in position.

0:08:53 > 0:08:55The skin's looking good over here.

0:08:55 > 0:08:59When the latex is set, it just peels away from our mould.

0:08:59 > 0:09:03Have a look at that. Beautiful pebbly skin.

0:09:03 > 0:09:05The great thing about a mould is we can make loads!

0:09:05 > 0:09:08I'll take these over and start layering them onto our lizard.

0:09:08 > 0:09:11- 'Love that bubbly texture!' - Those look amazing!

0:09:11 > 0:09:15- It looks great, doesn't it?- I'll pop the tail in, then give you a hand.

0:09:15 > 0:09:18'Let's leave Mike cracking on with this fantastic Big Art.

0:09:18 > 0:09:21'Michelle has a great DIY you'll want to try for yourself.'

0:09:21 > 0:09:24Because I'm making the skin on our giant lizard,

0:09:24 > 0:09:28I'm going to show you how to make that lovely scaly skin

0:09:28 > 0:09:30on your very own monitor lizard.

0:09:30 > 0:09:34The Doodle has been transferred onto a large piece of foam board.

0:09:34 > 0:09:37First, make yourself a textured roller out of corrugated cardboard.

0:09:37 > 0:09:40It's really simple to make.

0:09:40 > 0:09:43All you need to do is grab yourself the inside of a tape roll

0:09:43 > 0:09:46and cut out of cardboard two circular shapes.

0:09:46 > 0:09:48To get them the right size,

0:09:48 > 0:09:51just draw around the inside of your tape roll.

0:09:51 > 0:09:53These circles just fit on either side,

0:09:53 > 0:09:57and then you need to get a long strip of corrugated cardboard

0:09:57 > 0:10:01to fix around the outside, like that.

0:10:01 > 0:10:03I'll show you how to use this later.

0:10:03 > 0:10:05First, we need to add colour to our lizard.

0:10:05 > 0:10:08I'm using yellow, but you could use any colour you like.

0:10:08 > 0:10:12Lizards have wonderful markings, so with my yellow paint,

0:10:12 > 0:10:16I'm going to do some stripes going all the way across the body.

0:10:17 > 0:10:21'You must have adult supervision and wear protective gear

0:10:21 > 0:10:23'if you're using spray paint.'

0:10:27 > 0:10:29So now I've got my yellow as an undercoat,

0:10:29 > 0:10:32I'm going to go over it in black paint and then roll through it.

0:10:32 > 0:10:34Now, a tip is to take it section by section.

0:10:36 > 0:10:38Once you've painted a section,

0:10:38 > 0:10:41you need to go over it with your roller straightaway.

0:10:41 > 0:10:43It's almost like a tractor wheel.

0:10:44 > 0:10:48As you can see, I'm just following the lines all the way up.

0:10:48 > 0:10:52You've got the yellow undercoat popping out against the black.

0:11:11 > 0:11:14'Keep the wheels steady and apply carefully.

0:11:14 > 0:11:17'Great textures!'

0:11:26 > 0:11:29Once all your rolling's done, fill in the claws in black.

0:11:32 > 0:11:36So now I want to add some more detail to the lizard's face.

0:11:36 > 0:11:38For this, we've scored around the eyes,

0:11:38 > 0:11:41and all I'm going to do is pop them out with a scalpel.

0:11:41 > 0:11:43But you could also use scissors.

0:11:43 > 0:11:45'You must get an adult to do this bit.

0:11:45 > 0:11:48'Scalpels are dangerous.'

0:11:48 > 0:11:52To make the eyes look more deadly, I'm colouring the iris red.

0:11:52 > 0:11:56Now it's starting to look really deadly.

0:11:58 > 0:12:00And the pupil black.

0:12:04 > 0:12:08Check that out! I'm using the same technique for the nostrils.

0:12:10 > 0:12:13Finally, we can't forget the lizard's tongue.

0:12:13 > 0:12:16I've cut out a piece of foam and all I'm going to do

0:12:16 > 0:12:17is stick it underneath.

0:12:17 > 0:12:20And there you have it.

0:12:20 > 0:12:23Your very own deadly monitor lizard.

0:12:23 > 0:12:26'A great technique with corrugated cardboard. Give that one a go.

0:12:26 > 0:12:28'Back to the Big Art.

0:12:28 > 0:12:31'And our big monitor lizard is looking fantastic.'

0:12:31 > 0:12:34The skin has been applied. Now it's all about the painting.

0:12:34 > 0:12:36Shading's really important

0:12:36 > 0:12:39when it comes to making our monitor lizard look more realistic.

0:12:39 > 0:12:41We're doing lighter colours for the underbelly

0:12:41 > 0:12:44and working to darker shades on the top, which I'm doing now.

0:12:50 > 0:12:52'That's it. All the stages are complete.'

0:12:57 > 0:12:59There's a realism to our lizard.

0:12:59 > 0:13:01Those textural tones make it come alive.

0:13:01 > 0:13:05We made a real confident lizard. He's on the prowl.

0:13:05 > 0:13:08Nothing's going to touch him. Nothing's going to get in his way.

0:13:08 > 0:13:11'It's nearly time for the big reveal. I asked the Deadly Art team

0:13:11 > 0:13:15'to recreate these killer shots and turn them into art.

0:13:15 > 0:13:21'So let's take a look at the finished result. Look at that!

0:13:21 > 0:13:23'It just looks like a massive monitor lizard

0:13:23 > 0:13:26'has wandered right into the Deadly Art studio.

0:13:26 > 0:13:29'It has the long, whip-like tail at the back

0:13:29 > 0:13:31'and the long tongue at the front.

0:13:31 > 0:13:34'I love how wrinkly the skin is around the joints,

0:13:34 > 0:13:36'and the claws are huge!

0:13:36 > 0:13:39'Polystyrene as the texture is perfect for the skin

0:13:39 > 0:13:41'of this fabulous scaly reptile.

0:13:41 > 0:13:42'Nice work, team!'

0:13:42 > 0:13:45What an incredible creation!

0:13:45 > 0:13:47Make sure you try the Doodle and the DIY

0:13:47 > 0:13:50and we'll see you next time for more Deadly Art.
