0:00:02 > 0:00:04My name is Steve Backshall and this is Deadly Art.

0:00:07 > 0:00:11I'm lucky enough to travel the world tracking deadly animals.

0:00:13 > 0:00:16But in this show, my team of artists take my killer moment...

0:00:19 > 0:00:21..and turn it into art.

0:00:22 > 0:00:25And we'll reveal another unique creation.

0:00:25 > 0:00:28Along the way, you will get to pick up some tips, tricks

0:00:28 > 0:00:31and techniques so you can make some art yourself.

0:00:31 > 0:00:37This is no ordinary art show, this is Deadly Art.

0:00:41 > 0:00:44Coming up on Deadly Art, I'm in Wales on the trail of one of

0:00:44 > 0:00:46the UK's deadliest birds.

0:00:46 > 0:00:49Gannets are nature's equivalent for a harpoon.

0:00:49 > 0:00:52The Deadly Art team fold a lot of metal

0:00:52 > 0:00:54to create today's killer moment.

0:00:54 > 0:00:57And get your pencil ready for today's Deadly Doodle.

0:01:01 > 0:01:03Today, we're looking at gannets.

0:01:03 > 0:01:06Gannets are seabirds, but not just any seabirds,

0:01:06 > 0:01:10these are truly massive and spectacular predators.

0:01:10 > 0:01:14The gannet's hunting strategy is risky, but undoubtedly deadly.

0:01:14 > 0:01:17They'll soar up to perhaps 30 metres above the water,

0:01:17 > 0:01:19the height of a ten story building,

0:01:19 > 0:01:22then fold their wings into their side and hit

0:01:22 > 0:01:26the water like a torpedo, spearing the fish as they do.

0:01:26 > 0:01:30Let's hope our artists are ready for this diving supremo.

0:01:30 > 0:01:31Let's meet them.

0:01:31 > 0:01:35I'm Michelle and I just love working with different materials.

0:01:35 > 0:01:38I'm all about getting stuck in.

0:01:38 > 0:01:42Hey, I'm Mike. I'm a cartoon artist and I'm up for today's deadly art.

0:01:42 > 0:01:46Mike and Michelle are representing the Deadly Art team,

0:01:46 > 0:01:48who are always up for a challenge.

0:01:48 > 0:01:51And here is today's killer moment to inspire their art.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54They're built to fly and to dive.

0:01:54 > 0:01:56They can fold their wings into their side.

0:01:56 > 0:02:01They even have built-in airbags. This is going to be interesting.

0:02:01 > 0:02:04Our Big Art needs to be representational.

0:02:04 > 0:02:08It needs to cover power, speed and strength.

0:02:08 > 0:02:09Again, it needs a point of direction.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12With streamlined shapes, we can have them diving after their prey.

0:02:12 > 0:02:16In fact, we're going to do origami on a massive scale.

0:02:17 > 0:02:19Time for some more deadly art.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22Cutting these sheets of aluminium foil into shape.

0:02:22 > 0:02:25It's a bit thicker than the stuff you get in your kitchen, but it folds

0:02:25 > 0:02:26and cuts just like paper, so it's perfect

0:02:26 > 0:02:29for our giant origami gannets.

0:02:29 > 0:02:32- Oh, great, this will keep me busy. - Enjoy.- Thanks.

0:02:32 > 0:02:35I love how the Deadly Art team always try new

0:02:35 > 0:02:37and inventive ways of showing off the killer moment.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39Let's see how different this one will be.

0:02:39 > 0:02:41It'll involve lots of folding

0:02:41 > 0:02:45and I expect it will be a bit abstract, too.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47While Mike and Michelle get on with their gannets,

0:02:47 > 0:02:50to find ours on Deadly 60,

0:02:50 > 0:02:53we needed to go far out to sea on the Pembrokeshire coast.

0:02:53 > 0:02:57So, we jumped in some kayaks and braved the stormy seas.

0:02:57 > 0:03:02Gannets are nature's equivalent of a harpoon.

0:03:02 > 0:03:06They hit the water at speeds of over 60 miles per hour.

0:03:06 > 0:03:09Gannets have air sacks around their heads and chest

0:03:09 > 0:03:13that act like built-in airbags, cushioning the impact.

0:03:13 > 0:03:16What does it feel like to hit the water from that kind of height

0:03:16 > 0:03:18and at that kind of speed?

0:03:18 > 0:03:20Well, I've come to this oil rig to find out.

0:03:20 > 0:03:23We are about 20 metres above the water,

0:03:23 > 0:03:26which is kind of average for a gannet to dive.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28It does look kind of high though.

0:03:28 > 0:03:32If I don't get it just right, it's going to really hurt.

0:03:32 > 0:03:34Oh, dear.

0:03:46 > 0:03:47My head!

0:03:48 > 0:03:50I hit the water pretty good,

0:03:50 > 0:03:55but it feels like my brain is rattling around inside my skull!

0:03:55 > 0:03:59The gannet does that over, over and over again.

0:03:59 > 0:04:02Honestly, it's an incredible achievement.

0:04:02 > 0:04:06I think the gannet makes an Olympic high diving champion

0:04:06 > 0:04:08look like a total sissy.

0:04:08 > 0:04:10Let's head back to the Deadly Art studio now

0:04:10 > 0:04:12and more impressive origami.

0:04:12 > 0:04:14We've got a bit of a production line going on here.

0:04:14 > 0:04:16I'm making the head and body of the gannet,

0:04:16 > 0:04:17and here is how I make one.

0:04:17 > 0:04:20I start by folding my triangle into thirds.

0:04:20 > 0:04:24Then, I flip it over and fold in half. Here comes the origami bit.

0:04:24 > 0:04:27You fold in half diagonally.

0:04:27 > 0:04:29When you open it back up, you get a V shape inside

0:04:29 > 0:04:34and I'm going to use that to pinch and fold its head into position.

0:04:34 > 0:04:38- There you go. One half of the body. - I am making the gannet's wings.

0:04:38 > 0:04:40And now I'm going to attach them to the body.

0:04:40 > 0:04:42The foil is so thin it staples just like paper.

0:04:44 > 0:04:47Check those wings out.

0:04:47 > 0:04:50It's cool how the sections fit together to make our arty gannet.

0:04:50 > 0:04:52Now you can get involved.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55Michelle is taking a break from the folding to show you a Deadly Doodle.

0:04:55 > 0:04:58I am going to show you how to draw a Deadly Doodle of a gannet

0:04:58 > 0:05:00diving into the water to catch its prey.

0:05:00 > 0:05:03So, you are going to start by drawing a small oval

0:05:03 > 0:05:05at the bottom of your page.

0:05:05 > 0:05:08And then, above that, a larger oval.

0:05:08 > 0:05:12Once you've drawn that, you're going to draw a quashed square

0:05:12 > 0:05:17on one side of the oval and off that, a narrow triangle.

0:05:17 > 0:05:20Then, in the centre of the oval, which is going to be the gannet's

0:05:20 > 0:05:23body, we're drawing an hour shape.

0:05:23 > 0:05:26And it's just going to curve around like that.

0:05:26 > 0:05:30And then, we've got a diamond just a small distance away from the oval.

0:05:30 > 0:05:32Onto the gannet's eye.

0:05:32 > 0:05:34In the first oval that you drew, you're just going to draw

0:05:34 > 0:05:40a small eye and, coming off the end of the oval, a beak.

0:05:40 > 0:05:43Now you're going to start joining all the shapes together.

0:05:43 > 0:05:46So, attach the small oval to the large oval.

0:05:46 > 0:05:49This is just with a curved line. And again, on the other side.

0:05:49 > 0:05:52Attach the small oval to the large oval.

0:05:52 > 0:05:55I'm just going to draw in the diamond to the large oval

0:05:55 > 0:05:57with two curved lines.

0:05:57 > 0:06:01And now we have our tail feathers joined to the body.

0:06:01 > 0:06:03Now, of course, we want our gannet to be diving into the water

0:06:03 > 0:06:07to catch a fish, so I need to draw a water surface.

0:06:07 > 0:06:12I'm just doing that by a wavy line across the gannet.

0:06:12 > 0:06:16Now you can see that half of his body is in the water, half is above.

0:06:16 > 0:06:18Once you got all your shapes fixed together,

0:06:18 > 0:06:22grab your black marker pen and just fill in the details.

0:06:22 > 0:06:24I'm following my marks all the way around the body.

0:06:24 > 0:06:26Now, your marker pen is great

0:06:26 > 0:06:29because it makes it all look far more fluid.

0:06:29 > 0:06:32So, I'm just going over the wing with my marker pen.

0:06:32 > 0:06:35And now, I'm filling in the details.

0:06:35 > 0:06:37I've got the black wing here.

0:06:37 > 0:06:41I'm just drawing lines across my wing,

0:06:41 > 0:06:43these are going to be the feathers.

0:06:43 > 0:06:45Now, all the feathers are facing down

0:06:45 > 0:06:47as it's diving into the water.

0:06:47 > 0:06:49And now onto the underside of the gannet.

0:06:49 > 0:06:52Again, I'm following my black marker pen around just joining all

0:06:52 > 0:06:54the lines together.

0:06:54 > 0:06:56And up along to the tail feathers.

0:06:56 > 0:06:57And as I did with the other wing,

0:06:57 > 0:07:00I'm just trying black lines all the way down.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03And it just really helps to make it look streamlined.

0:07:03 > 0:07:06Now I'm just going over the beak. Ready to catch some food.

0:07:06 > 0:07:09Now, for the eye. As the eye is quite small,

0:07:09 > 0:07:13I am going to use a thinner tip just to make it nice and defined.

0:07:13 > 0:07:16I'm just colouring around it in black.

0:07:16 > 0:07:20So, with my thicker tip, I'm going to shade in the middle wing.

0:07:20 > 0:07:23I'm doing nice, long, vertical strokes. These are great

0:07:23 > 0:07:27because they really highlight the direction that the gannet

0:07:27 > 0:07:30is going in. And now to fill in the water surface.

0:07:30 > 0:07:33I'm going over those wavy lines just to make them a lot more fluid.

0:07:33 > 0:07:36And to give the impression that the gannet has just splashed in,

0:07:36 > 0:07:39with your thinner marker pen,

0:07:39 > 0:07:42you can just do a load of squiggly lines coming off

0:07:42 > 0:07:44and it really gives the effect that the gannet

0:07:44 > 0:07:45has made a great, big splash.

0:07:45 > 0:07:49And finally, I am going to draw in the doomed fish.

0:07:49 > 0:07:53And there you have your deadly diving gannet.

0:07:53 > 0:07:55Great gannet, Michelle.

0:07:55 > 0:07:57So, how did some of you get on drawing this doodle?

0:07:57 > 0:07:59We went to Devon on our Deadly Day Out

0:07:59 > 0:08:02and here is all the action from the Deadly Art tent.

0:08:02 > 0:08:05ALL: Deadly Art!

0:08:05 > 0:08:09- I'm Dutch.- And I'm Ian. - BOTH: And this is a Deadly Doodle.

0:08:09 > 0:08:12I'm proud about my doodle because I like the way

0:08:12 > 0:08:14that it's got a fish.

0:08:14 > 0:08:16And it's deadly because it's already caught one.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18It's good and it's simple.

0:08:18 > 0:08:21ALL: This is our Deadly Art.

0:08:21 > 0:08:26My favourite bit is the beak because it can catch fish.

0:08:26 > 0:08:30They look brilliant! Keep on doodling.

0:08:30 > 0:08:31Let's get back to the Deadly Art studio.

0:08:31 > 0:08:34Inside the metal basket that Mike is spraying,

0:08:34 > 0:08:36we're going to have organic prey.

0:08:36 > 0:08:38So we've just cut up a load of fish and then,

0:08:38 > 0:08:40using this embossing tool,

0:08:40 > 0:08:43I'm just creating those lovely scaly patterns.

0:08:43 > 0:08:47And when I press hard, the patterns pop out on the front and the back.

0:08:47 > 0:08:50And it also gives the fish a lovely natural curl.

0:08:50 > 0:08:54We painted our fish all different colours and I am going to spray mine bronze.

0:08:54 > 0:08:57Love the shapes Michelle is making on those shiny fish.

0:08:57 > 0:08:58Definitely abstract.

0:08:58 > 0:09:02But I love how different this Big Art is going to be.

0:09:02 > 0:09:06And now Mike is going to show you how to make your very own

0:09:06 > 0:09:07diving gannet.

0:09:07 > 0:09:10Oh, yes! Straight on target.

0:09:10 > 0:09:14I am going to show you how to make this flying and diving gannet.

0:09:14 > 0:09:19You need to start with a foam tube. You can get this from any DIY store.

0:09:19 > 0:09:22I've taken my foam tube and I've covered it in white craft foam.

0:09:22 > 0:09:23You can get that from any craft store.

0:09:23 > 0:09:27I've wrapped it all the way around the side

0:09:27 > 0:09:29and I've also covered one of the ends. You can see,

0:09:29 > 0:09:32I've also marked out where the wings are going to go.

0:09:32 > 0:09:34That's all these lots. One on the side,

0:09:34 > 0:09:37one on that side to slide the wings through,

0:09:37 > 0:09:40and also this cross-section at the back.

0:09:40 > 0:09:43I've got the cross here and these wrap up the side

0:09:43 > 0:09:47so that our tail feathers fit inside each of these grooves.

0:09:47 > 0:09:49I'm going to use a scalpel to cut out all of these lines.

0:09:49 > 0:09:53You must get an adult to help you because scalpels are very dangerous.

0:09:53 > 0:09:55I am going to cut all the way along.

0:09:55 > 0:09:58We cut it deep enough to go through your craft foam

0:09:58 > 0:10:00and through your foam tube.

0:10:00 > 0:10:04This bit can be fiddly, so get an adult to help you.

0:10:04 > 0:10:07When you've done that, you should be able to pop out your little slot.

0:10:07 > 0:10:10And on the tail, cutting out the cross-section.

0:10:10 > 0:10:13Definitely minding my fingers. Pop the last bit out.

0:10:13 > 0:10:15Now, that's the body done. Time for the wings.

0:10:15 > 0:10:18I've done out the shape onto a piece of foam.

0:10:18 > 0:10:21It looks like giant vampire teeth.

0:10:21 > 0:10:24Now, I'm going to cut that out with some scissors.

0:10:24 > 0:10:26This foam is a bit thicker than the other foam

0:10:26 > 0:10:29because we want these wings to be really strong and pliable.

0:10:29 > 0:10:31OK? That's the wings cut out.

0:10:31 > 0:10:33And it's just like the wings on our gannet here.

0:10:33 > 0:10:35I am going to slot these into the body.

0:10:35 > 0:10:38So, right through that slot that I cut earlier.

0:10:38 > 0:10:41I am going to slide these wings right through the slot.

0:10:41 > 0:10:43His wings are in the middle, in place.

0:10:43 > 0:10:45As you can see, on this gannet here,

0:10:45 > 0:10:48gannets also have black feathers at the ends of their wings.

0:10:48 > 0:10:51So, for that, I've got two pieces of foam

0:10:51 > 0:10:54and I've also used a white crayon to draw on some of the feathers.

0:10:54 > 0:10:58So we'll just stick those to the end with some double-sided tape.

0:10:58 > 0:11:02Now it's coming together. Now it's time for the tail feathers.

0:11:02 > 0:11:06So, for that, with the same kind of foam, this time I've got two squares.

0:11:06 > 0:11:10And I've also drawn onto slots, as you can see, one on each,

0:11:10 > 0:11:13so they fit together just like that.

0:11:13 > 0:11:18Now, I've cut out those two slots, our pieces of our tail fit together.

0:11:18 > 0:11:20Look at that!

0:11:20 > 0:11:23Now this fits into the cross-section at the end of our gannet.

0:11:23 > 0:11:26I've secured the tail feathers in place and they look just like a dart.

0:11:26 > 0:11:29That way our gannet will fly nice and straight.

0:11:29 > 0:11:32OK, now it's time for the head. I want my gannet to dive,

0:11:32 > 0:11:35so I need to add a weight into the end of his head,

0:11:35 > 0:11:38so that when it flies, it always wants to dive.

0:11:38 > 0:11:41For that, I'm going to add a weight, which is this old eraser,

0:11:41 > 0:11:44into the head. It fits in snugly.

0:11:44 > 0:11:46To make sure it doesn't come out,

0:11:46 > 0:11:48I'm going to add a little foam square.

0:11:48 > 0:11:52And tape that down to the end. Down to the head.

0:11:52 > 0:11:55And cut around it.

0:11:55 > 0:11:57OK, now we've got a cap.

0:11:57 > 0:11:59So, we've got everything done except for the head now.

0:11:59 > 0:12:03For that, I've got to shield shapes. These are going to be for the beak.

0:12:03 > 0:12:05We'll add those on with some tape.

0:12:05 > 0:12:08One to the top and then the bottom one goes on.

0:12:08 > 0:12:12Stick that down and wrap it around.

0:12:12 > 0:12:14I have to cover up the rest of the foam tube.

0:12:14 > 0:12:16For that, I've got two more foam shapes.

0:12:16 > 0:12:18I've got one which is a little leaf shape.

0:12:18 > 0:12:22This is for the scruff of the neck. So, we'll stick that underneath.

0:12:22 > 0:12:25And the last thing you need to add on are the distinctive yellow feathers

0:12:25 > 0:12:26on the crown of her head. So, for that,

0:12:26 > 0:12:30I've got this mask shape made out of the same kind of foam.

0:12:30 > 0:12:33We'll just secure that down with double-sided tape.

0:12:33 > 0:12:36So, the last thing I can do is draw in the eyes. All right,

0:12:36 > 0:12:39it looks just like a gannet. Now to give it a try.

0:12:41 > 0:12:43Ah!

0:12:43 > 0:12:44Thanks, Mike. Back to the Big Art.

0:12:44 > 0:12:48I think we've really captured what the gannets are all about.

0:12:48 > 0:12:50It's the way they dive-bomb into the water to catch the fish.

0:12:50 > 0:12:52Definitely. Look at all the movement and direction.

0:12:52 > 0:12:55We've got streamlined gannets shaped like a V,

0:12:55 > 0:12:59connected to rods shaped like a V, all focusing down on their prey.

0:12:59 > 0:13:00Nice one!

0:13:00 > 0:13:03So, it's nearly time for the Big Reveal.

0:13:03 > 0:13:05I asked the Deadly Art team to re-create

0:13:05 > 0:13:08this killer moment and turn it into art.

0:13:08 > 0:13:10So, let's take a look at the finished result.

0:13:12 > 0:13:15Oh, this really sums up the speed

0:13:15 > 0:13:18and the elegance of the diving gannet!
