0:00:00 > 0:00:03My name's Steve Backshall and this is Deadly Art.

0:00:07 > 0:00:11I'm lucky enough to travel the world, tracking deadly animals.

0:00:11 > 0:00:16But in this show, my team of artists take my killer moment...

0:00:19 > 0:00:21..and turn it into art.

0:00:22 > 0:00:26And we'll reveal another unique creation.

0:00:26 > 0:00:29Along the way, you'll get to pick up some tips, tricks and techniques

0:00:29 > 0:00:33so you can make some art yourself.

0:00:33 > 0:00:37This is no ordinary art show. This is Deadly Art!

0:00:41 > 0:00:44'Coming up on Deadly Art... I meet a real giant of the Pacific Ocean.'

0:00:44 > 0:00:48It feels like it could rip my arm out of its socket!

0:00:48 > 0:00:50'The Deadly Artists get in a tentacle tangle.'

0:00:50 > 0:00:53BOTH: Octopus attack!

0:00:53 > 0:00:56'And grab your pencils for another Deadly Doodle.'

0:00:57 > 0:00:59So what are we looking at today?

0:00:59 > 0:01:02Today's deadly animal is a giant of the sea.

0:01:02 > 0:01:06With cunning camouflage, strength that's second to none,

0:01:06 > 0:01:08and because it has no hard body parts,

0:01:08 > 0:01:12the ability to cram itself into the tiniest of spaces,

0:01:12 > 0:01:15the Giant Pacific Octopus.

0:01:15 > 0:01:17This is the largest octopus on earth,

0:01:17 > 0:01:22and they can reach an enormous size. Three times longer than I am high.

0:01:24 > 0:01:28So who's taking on the Deadly Art challenge today?

0:01:28 > 0:01:32I'm Michelle and I just love working with different materials.

0:01:32 > 0:01:34I'm all about getting stuck in.

0:01:36 > 0:01:39I'm Nicola. I'm a power-tool queen.

0:01:39 > 0:01:42Nicola and Michelle are representing the Deadly Art team,

0:01:42 > 0:01:44who are always up for a challenge.

0:01:44 > 0:01:47Here's our killer moment, to inspire their art work.

0:01:47 > 0:01:52The Giant Pacific Octopus is the largest octopus in the world.

0:01:52 > 0:01:55- This needs to be our biggest art ever.- Absolutely.

0:01:55 > 0:01:58With giant tentacles and huge suckers.

0:01:58 > 0:02:00How are we going to make this piece of art?

0:02:00 > 0:02:03With the deadliest power-tool of all. The sewing machine.

0:02:03 > 0:02:06This is going to be interesting.

0:02:06 > 0:02:08We're going to make a massive inflatable for our octopus,

0:02:08 > 0:02:11which means we need loads of material.

0:02:11 > 0:02:13There's going to be a lot of sewing.

0:02:13 > 0:02:16Our suckers have been drawn out on the computer

0:02:16 > 0:02:18and will be printed off on to fabric.

0:02:18 > 0:02:22I'm going to show you another technique to create the same effect,

0:02:22 > 0:02:25that you might possibly want to try at home. Stencilling.

0:02:25 > 0:02:30Every octopus needs its suckers and to make those, I'm creating stencils

0:02:30 > 0:02:33by drawing a series of circles, like this,

0:02:33 > 0:02:37a smaller one in the centre. And now I'm going to cut those out

0:02:37 > 0:02:40and that will enable us to spray those suckers on.

0:02:40 > 0:02:43While Nicola and Michelle get on, in British Columbia,

0:02:43 > 0:02:48the Deadly 60 crew and I were on the search for a Giant Pacific Octopus.

0:02:48 > 0:02:53I think through this hole... Oh, my goodness, yes! I see one!

0:02:53 > 0:02:55Oh, wow!

0:02:57 > 0:03:00Now that is a big octopus.

0:03:02 > 0:03:07Apparently, these octopus are so curious

0:03:07 > 0:03:13that if they sense the warmth of your hand,

0:03:13 > 0:03:17they will actually come out to try and get a closer feel of it.

0:03:18 > 0:03:22I just hope I don't get introduced to its vicious biting beak.

0:03:24 > 0:03:29Oh, wow! Its tentacles are gripping my fingers. That's amazing!

0:03:30 > 0:03:34Come on, then. Wow! What a grip!

0:03:36 > 0:03:38That's phenomenal!

0:03:39 > 0:03:43They have amazing suction power.

0:03:43 > 0:03:46Woah! Oh, my goodness!

0:03:46 > 0:03:49It feels like it could rip my arm out of its socket!

0:03:49 > 0:03:50Join me later,

0:03:50 > 0:03:54on my second attempt to get closer to one of those giants.

0:03:54 > 0:03:55Over to Nicola.

0:03:55 > 0:03:58These suckers look amazing already, don't they?

0:03:58 > 0:04:01Now it's just about spraying over the top of it

0:04:01 > 0:04:03to give that natural, shaded effect.

0:04:03 > 0:04:05Because spray paint can be toxic,

0:04:05 > 0:04:09Nicola is wearing a protective facemask when she spray paints.

0:04:09 > 0:04:12It's good to see how other techniques can work too.

0:04:12 > 0:04:14These spray-painted suckers look just like

0:04:14 > 0:04:17the professionally computer drawn ones. Over to Michelle.

0:04:17 > 0:04:20This piece of material has been put facedown on to another piece,

0:04:20 > 0:04:23and they've been attached together with pins.

0:04:23 > 0:04:25Next, I need to sew all the way round the edges

0:04:25 > 0:04:28and once that's done, I can pull the material the right way round

0:04:28 > 0:04:30so the suckers are on the outside.

0:04:30 > 0:04:34Later, when we inflate the tentacle, no air will escape.

0:04:34 > 0:04:37While Michelle gets on with the sewing sections,

0:04:37 > 0:04:39it's time for you to get involved.

0:04:39 > 0:04:43Nicola is taking time out to show you a Deadly Doodle.

0:04:43 > 0:04:46This is the Deadly Doodle of the octopus.

0:04:46 > 0:04:48I'll show you how to draw it.

0:04:48 > 0:04:51And as usual we start with some really simple guidelines.

0:04:51 > 0:04:56Begin by drawing a big oval at the top of your page.

0:04:56 > 0:05:00Just below that, add on a slightly smaller circle,

0:05:00 > 0:05:03and in this dent here, you need another oval for his eye

0:05:03 > 0:05:07and a second one right in the middle, just there.

0:05:07 > 0:05:09Now it's time for his legs.

0:05:09 > 0:05:12He's got eight of them so it could get a bit complicated,

0:05:12 > 0:05:13we'll take it one at a time.

0:05:13 > 0:05:18Starting here, just below his eye, do a big wiggly line

0:05:18 > 0:05:21and then double back on yourself,

0:05:21 > 0:05:24getting bigger as you come closer to the body.

0:05:24 > 0:05:30The next one, right the way around, same again, double up and back.

0:05:30 > 0:05:33A third one just here.

0:05:33 > 0:05:36As you go behind a leg, just skip over the line

0:05:36 > 0:05:39and join it back to where it comes from.

0:05:39 > 0:05:43We'll add two more down here,

0:05:43 > 0:05:46filling the page as much as you possibly can

0:05:46 > 0:05:48to make it look really dramatic.

0:05:48 > 0:05:50Now, he needs three more

0:05:50 > 0:05:54and they can just fill in any of the spaces you've got left.

0:05:54 > 0:06:01And finally, we'll slip one right in the back, just there.

0:06:01 > 0:06:06Now it's time to take the marker pen and define those lines.

0:06:06 > 0:06:09From the top of his eye, go all the way around -

0:06:09 > 0:06:13you may notice there's a slight dip in the top of the octopus' head.

0:06:13 > 0:06:15Now we'll fill in the eyes.

0:06:15 > 0:06:19Go all the way around the eye, and then draw in the number six

0:06:19 > 0:06:24for his pupil, with the same again on the other eye.

0:06:24 > 0:06:28Now we'll fill in the legs, and that's very easy,

0:06:28 > 0:06:30you just go all the way over

0:06:30 > 0:06:33all of those lines you've already created.

0:06:36 > 0:06:37That's all of his legs done.

0:06:37 > 0:06:41Now he just needs some suckers and for that I'm going to change pens,

0:06:41 > 0:06:46because they're quite fine details, so I'm going to use a fine pen.

0:06:46 > 0:06:49Add on some really small circles,

0:06:49 > 0:06:54all the way along the base of each leg, or tentacle.

0:06:54 > 0:06:56You might see the entire circle

0:06:56 > 0:07:00and sometimes they might just be poking out the edge.

0:07:01 > 0:07:04The last thing to do is rub out those pencil lines.

0:07:07 > 0:07:11And there he is, your Deadly Giant Octopus.

0:07:11 > 0:07:13What a magnificent octopus!

0:07:13 > 0:07:17So how did some of you get on, drawing this doodle?

0:07:17 > 0:07:19We went to Glasgow on a Deadly Day Out

0:07:19 > 0:07:22and here's all the action from the Deadly Art tent.

0:07:22 > 0:07:25ALL: Deadly!

0:07:25 > 0:07:27I'm Ewan and this is my Deadly Doodle.

0:07:28 > 0:07:32ALL: Here's our Deadly Doodles.

0:07:32 > 0:07:34I don't normally do doodles like this at home

0:07:34 > 0:07:37and I think I will try to do more.

0:07:37 > 0:07:40Let's get back to the Deadly Art studio.

0:07:40 > 0:07:43We've got so much material.

0:07:43 > 0:07:47I'm just attaching one of the tentacles to the rest of the body.

0:07:47 > 0:07:49This octopus is going to be massive.

0:07:49 > 0:07:52Imagine, this is just one of his tentacles

0:07:52 > 0:07:54and there are eight of these bad boys.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57It's not long now till our Giant Octopus comes to life.

0:07:57 > 0:07:59Can't wait to see it!

0:07:59 > 0:08:02But for now, it's back to British Columbia,

0:08:02 > 0:08:03and our Giant Pacific Octopus.

0:08:03 > 0:08:06Look at the way the mantle, the head,

0:08:06 > 0:08:10bubbles up with these tiny projections and changes in colour,

0:08:10 > 0:08:13so that he blends in with his background...

0:08:15 > 0:08:17..moving across the bottom,

0:08:17 > 0:08:22with that beautiful stretching out of the tentacles,

0:08:22 > 0:08:27just feeling his way through his environment.

0:08:27 > 0:08:29He is the weirdest,

0:08:29 > 0:08:34most majestic creature I've seen in these seas.

0:08:34 > 0:08:37He is utterly phenomenal.

0:08:37 > 0:08:39At first it's kind of tentative,

0:08:39 > 0:08:42but the power when they actually pull back

0:08:42 > 0:08:47and decide to really pull towards their beak-like mouth parts,

0:08:47 > 0:08:49it's actually very frightening.

0:08:51 > 0:08:53Particularly when you consider

0:08:53 > 0:08:57that this is actually quite a small Pacific Octopus.

0:08:57 > 0:09:03I mean, they could get to be, wait for it, nine metres in width.

0:09:04 > 0:09:07So if you could try and imagine

0:09:07 > 0:09:13an octopus that has an arm-span like a truck,

0:09:13 > 0:09:15I think you'll have the idea.

0:09:15 > 0:09:18Such a breathtaking experience.

0:09:18 > 0:09:22Now Michelle's got a super fun inspired DIY for you.

0:09:22 > 0:09:24I'm going to show you how to make this Giant Octopus

0:09:24 > 0:09:27using an old umbrella.

0:09:27 > 0:09:29Now, an octopus has eight tentacles

0:09:29 > 0:09:33and an umbrella has eight segments, so it's perfect for this make.

0:09:33 > 0:09:37I want to give my octopus a lovely bright blue colour,

0:09:37 > 0:09:39so for that I'm using some blue foam.

0:09:39 > 0:09:41You can get this from any craft store.

0:09:41 > 0:09:45What I've done here, is cut out a large triangle,

0:09:45 > 0:09:49and you'll see that this fits onto a segment of the umbrella.

0:09:49 > 0:09:52You need to repeat this all the way around,

0:09:52 > 0:09:56sticking it down to each segment. Let's make the tentacle now.

0:09:56 > 0:09:59Again, I've got a large piece of blue foam

0:09:59 > 0:10:02and I've just drawn a tentacle shape on it with a black marker pen.

0:10:02 > 0:10:06This is almost like a wavy row that tapers at the end.

0:10:06 > 0:10:09Once it's drawn on, you just need to cut it out.

0:10:09 > 0:10:12The foam's really easy to cut through.

0:10:12 > 0:10:15Take care when you use scissors!

0:10:15 > 0:10:17There we go, one large tentacle.

0:10:17 > 0:10:21Now for the inner part of it, I've just drawn the same shape,

0:10:21 > 0:10:25but slightly smaller, and I'm going to stick the two together.

0:10:28 > 0:10:32Now that's all stuck down, I'm going to move on to those amazing suckers.

0:10:32 > 0:10:37All I need to do, is draw some large circles on top of the foam.

0:10:40 > 0:10:43Once you've got your circles, you just need to cut them out.

0:10:45 > 0:10:49The suckers look great because they pop out against the white tentacle.

0:10:49 > 0:10:51To create this effect, all you need to do

0:10:51 > 0:10:55is draw a line from the centre of the circle to the edge,

0:10:55 > 0:10:59and then just snip into it with your scissors.

0:10:59 > 0:11:02As you can see, I'm just folding one side over the other,

0:11:02 > 0:11:04and it creates a cone shape.

0:11:04 > 0:11:08Next, all I'm going to do is stick these two sides down,

0:11:08 > 0:11:10so it's nice and secure.

0:11:12 > 0:11:14I've got a load of suckers here,

0:11:14 > 0:11:18and I'm going to start sticking them all over the tentacle.

0:11:18 > 0:11:20This is the fun bit.

0:11:25 > 0:11:26That's my suckers stuck on,

0:11:26 > 0:11:29so now I'm going to start building up the umbrella.

0:11:29 > 0:11:32As you can see from this one we made earlier,

0:11:32 > 0:11:34there's one last tentacle to put on,

0:11:34 > 0:11:37on one last segment of triangular foam.

0:11:37 > 0:11:40I'll just bring it over, it's pretty big.

0:11:40 > 0:11:44First, I'll attach that last segment of foam at the top.

0:11:49 > 0:11:52That looks brilliant!

0:11:52 > 0:11:55Next up, the last tentacle.

0:11:55 > 0:12:01I'm just going to put some glue along the top of it here, and stick it in.

0:12:01 > 0:12:05And for the finishing touches we need some deadly eyes.

0:12:05 > 0:12:08For that, I've got a polystyrene ball and cut it in half,

0:12:08 > 0:12:11and then I've got some black foam and cut out the number six

0:12:11 > 0:12:15for the pupils, so I'm just going to stick these on.

0:12:18 > 0:12:24There we go, my new umbrella. And he's an octopus!

0:12:24 > 0:12:26He doesn't mind getting wet.

0:12:26 > 0:12:29Brilliant brolly, Michelle! Back to the Big Art

0:12:29 > 0:12:32and it's inflatable time.

0:12:32 > 0:12:34Isn't it amazing that a lot of material,

0:12:34 > 0:12:38stitching and a load of air, can make a creature come to life?

0:12:42 > 0:12:46We've had so much fun making this one and it is just so big,

0:12:46 > 0:12:50it literally takes over the whole of the Deadly Art studio.

0:12:50 > 0:12:51He is incredible.

0:12:51 > 0:12:56You definitely can't argue with the scale of this, he's awesome,

0:12:56 > 0:13:00and I think the entire Deadly Art team deserves a big congratulations.

0:13:00 > 0:13:02- They really, really do. - What do you think?

0:13:02 > 0:13:05BOTH: Octopus attack!

0:13:05 > 0:13:08I asked the Deadly Art team to recreate this killer moment

0:13:08 > 0:13:11and turn it into art.

0:13:11 > 0:13:14So let's take a look at the finished work of art.

0:13:14 > 0:13:16This is great!

0:13:16 > 0:13:21I cannot think of any more perfect way to represent an octopus.

0:13:21 > 0:13:25The way the body and arms move, is just perfect.

0:13:27 > 0:13:31There are no hard parts in an octopus' body, apart from its beak.

0:13:31 > 0:13:34And you can't think of any better way of representing that

0:13:34 > 0:13:36than in this kind of model.

0:13:36 > 0:13:42Nice work, team. Art doesn't get any deadlier than this!

0:13:42 > 0:13:45What an incredible creation!

0:13:45 > 0:13:47Make sure you try the doodle and the DIY

0:13:47 > 0:13:50and we'll see you next time for more Deadly Art.
