0:00:02 > 0:00:03This is Deadly Art.
0:00:07 > 0:00:10I'm lucky enough to travel the world, tracking deadly animals.
0:00:13 > 0:00:16But in this show, my team of artists take my killer moment,
0:00:19 > 0:00:21and turn it into art.
0:00:22 > 0:00:24And we'll reveal another unique creation.
0:00:26 > 0:00:29Along the way, you'll get to pick up some tips, tricks and techniques,
0:00:29 > 0:00:31so you can make some art yourself.
0:00:33 > 0:00:35This is no ordinary art show.
0:00:35 > 0:00:37This is Deadly Art.
0:00:41 > 0:00:42Coming up on Deadly Art,
0:00:42 > 0:00:46I dive deep with a surprisingly deadly marine predator.
0:00:46 > 0:00:50The Deadly artists push art to the max.
0:00:50 > 0:00:53And we've got a very cool deadly doodle to show you.
0:00:57 > 0:01:01Today's Deadly Art animal has up to 21 arms and could be
0:01:01 > 0:01:05one of the most destructive animals I've ever dealt with.
0:01:05 > 0:01:08This is the crown of thorns starfish.
0:01:08 > 0:01:10The spines that cover the starfish can deliver
0:01:10 > 0:01:13a venomous toxin, which, if I were to stand on it,
0:01:13 > 0:01:16would be incredibly painful.
0:01:16 > 0:01:18But that's not what makes them deadly.
0:01:18 > 0:01:21Imagine an army of mini killing machines,
0:01:21 > 0:01:25travelling over a coral reef and eating it as they go,
0:01:25 > 0:01:26turning this
0:01:26 > 0:01:28into this.
0:01:28 > 0:01:32Their killing method is one of the most grotesque I have ever seen.
0:01:32 > 0:01:34I'll tell you more later on,
0:01:34 > 0:01:35but first of all,
0:01:35 > 0:01:39let's meet the artists who are waiting in the Deadly Art studio.
0:01:39 > 0:01:42I'm Michelle and I just love working with different materials.
0:01:43 > 0:01:45I'm Nicola.
0:01:45 > 0:01:46I'm a power tool queen.
0:01:46 > 0:01:49Nicola and Michelle represent the Deadly Art team,
0:01:49 > 0:01:52who are always up for a challenge.
0:01:52 > 0:01:56And these are the killer shots to inspire their artwork -
0:01:56 > 0:01:59their lethal spines and their strength in numbers
0:01:59 > 0:02:03mean that these lethal killing machines are simply unstoppable.
0:02:04 > 0:02:07You don't expect a starfish to be so destructive.
0:02:07 > 0:02:11They're like an army crawling across the seabed, destroying the coral.
0:02:11 > 0:02:15We should represent that in the artwork.
0:02:15 > 0:02:18- So steel for the seabed and foam for the starfish.- Let's get on with it.
0:02:18 > 0:02:22'Time for some more Deadly Art.'
0:02:22 > 0:02:26We've got a sheet of steel. This is going to represent our ocean bed.
0:02:26 > 0:02:28The perfect backdrop for our story.
0:02:28 > 0:02:31We'll have the destroyed coral down here,
0:02:31 > 0:02:34the army of starfish here making their way up here.
0:02:34 > 0:02:38- The starfish are on a mission of destruction.- That's our seabed.
0:02:38 > 0:02:40Let's make the starfish.
0:02:40 > 0:02:45'I think it's really important that art can relay an important theme,
0:02:45 > 0:02:48'the destruction of coral by the deadly crown of thorns.'
0:02:48 > 0:02:53For the starfish, we're using expanding foam. This is amazing.
0:02:53 > 0:02:56As I spray it into the shape, it expands.
0:02:56 > 0:03:01- How cool is that?- As it expands, it sets. We're making loads of them.
0:03:01 > 0:03:03When they're dry, we'll paint them.
0:03:03 > 0:03:05'Great foam spray!
0:03:05 > 0:03:09'There are some superb techniques in this challenge.
0:03:09 > 0:03:12'While they get on, on Deadly 60,
0:03:12 > 0:03:16'I went diving in the beautiful waters of Mozambique.
0:03:16 > 0:03:20'I was on the lookout for the deadly crown of thorns.'
0:03:20 > 0:03:21Look at this!
0:03:25 > 0:03:28This is exactly what I was hoping to find!
0:03:29 > 0:03:34This big, bizarre, pin-cushion-like creature in front of me
0:03:34 > 0:03:37is a starfish.
0:03:37 > 0:03:43But it's a special kind of starfish. I'm not going to pick this one up.
0:03:43 > 0:03:46It's a crown of thorns.
0:03:46 > 0:03:51All these spines covering the arms have venom
0:03:51 > 0:03:54and certainly, this far underwater,
0:03:54 > 0:03:58the last thing I'd want would be to get nailed by this.
0:03:58 > 0:04:00It potentially could kill me.
0:04:02 > 0:04:06However, that's not the reason why this,
0:04:06 > 0:04:11the crown of thorns starfish, is going on the Deadly 60.
0:04:12 > 0:04:16'No, I've not gone completely bonkers.
0:04:16 > 0:04:20'This is a starfish, and if you think starfish
0:04:20 > 0:04:24'are just like star-shaped rocks, take a look at them speeded up.
0:04:27 > 0:04:32'Our starfish, the crown of thorns, hunts and kills coral.
0:04:34 > 0:04:39'They creep up on their defenceless prey on tube-like feet.
0:04:39 > 0:04:43'To eat, they throw up their stomach lining out through their mouths,
0:04:43 > 0:04:46'over the living coral.
0:04:46 > 0:04:50'That's the yellow stuff that looks a bit like cabbage.
0:04:50 > 0:04:54'Its stomach contains highly toxic digestive juices
0:04:54 > 0:04:58'which dissolve the coral, killing it.
0:04:59 > 0:05:03'So the starfish pulls in its stomach
0:05:03 > 0:05:07'and using those tube-like feet,
0:05:07 > 0:05:10'moves on to feast on a fresh part of the coral reef.
0:05:14 > 0:05:17'Just one of these deadly critters is destructive enough,
0:05:17 > 0:05:19'but if there's lots of them,
0:05:19 > 0:05:22'they can devastate a once lush coral garden,
0:05:22 > 0:05:26'reducing it to a brittle, lifeless skeleton.
0:05:32 > 0:05:36'Let's check out how our Deadly Art team are getting on.'
0:05:36 > 0:05:39We've decided to introduce a bit of pop art theme.
0:05:39 > 0:05:42That's why I'm using all these fabulous colours.
0:05:42 > 0:05:45I've got pinks, yellows. It's going to be great.
0:05:47 > 0:05:49'Amazing colours.'
0:05:50 > 0:05:53The crown of thorns has loads of venomous spines.
0:05:53 > 0:05:55We're making them out of silicon.
0:05:55 > 0:05:58'Those spikes look great, but there's a lot to do.
0:05:58 > 0:06:01'Michelle's going to take time out from the Big Art now
0:06:01 > 0:06:04'to show you a Deadly Doodle.'
0:06:04 > 0:06:06This is a crown of thorns starfish.
0:06:06 > 0:06:08I'm going to show you how to draw one.
0:06:08 > 0:06:13I'm going to draw three large ovals in the middle of your paper.
0:06:13 > 0:06:18One large one in the centre and then inside that, a smaller one.
0:06:18 > 0:06:22Inside that one, a really small one. Now I've got my three ovals,
0:06:22 > 0:06:26I'll draw lines connecting the inner circle to the outer circle
0:06:26 > 0:06:31and these lines are going all the way round the starfish.
0:06:32 > 0:06:35I've got my lines drawn in.
0:06:35 > 0:06:38Now to build up our starfish, I'm drawing a curvy line up
0:06:38 > 0:06:41and back down again, like a V shape.
0:06:41 > 0:06:45And repeating this on the other ones.
0:06:45 > 0:06:50When I get to the back, I'm bringing the line up and out, instead of in.
0:06:50 > 0:06:54Like that. And coming back round the other side of the starfish,
0:06:54 > 0:06:58for my bottom line, I'm just drawing a line up to connect it.
0:06:58 > 0:07:01All the pencil lines are drawn in, so I'm changing to the pen.
0:07:01 > 0:07:05I'm just going over these original lines,
0:07:05 > 0:07:07bringing them out with the black marker.
0:07:07 > 0:07:09At this front bit,
0:07:09 > 0:07:13I'm drawing an oval shape cos this is the leg right in front of you.
0:07:13 > 0:07:16And the same for this one as it's right at the front.
0:07:16 > 0:07:18As I'm going round the back,
0:07:18 > 0:07:23I'm just following the lines round, making them nice and bold.
0:07:30 > 0:07:35Now I'm going to go down each leg, drawing a central line.
0:07:38 > 0:07:43To really bring the starfish to life, I need to add the thorns.
0:07:46 > 0:07:50These are just short vertical lines. You can add as many as you like.
0:07:51 > 0:07:56Just make sure you keep these short lines pointing up.
0:07:56 > 0:07:58There's a lot of thorns!
0:07:58 > 0:08:03I'm going to bring the centre of the starfish together
0:08:03 > 0:08:06by joining up all those lines.
0:08:06 > 0:08:08In the centre, I'm adding some more thorns.
0:08:11 > 0:08:17For the final part, all you need to do is rub out the pencil lines.
0:08:17 > 0:08:21Without those pencil markings,
0:08:21 > 0:08:25you can see the lovely shape of the starfish.
0:08:25 > 0:08:29Brilliant! There you have your crown of thorns starfish!
0:08:29 > 0:08:33'Brilliant, Michelle! How did some of you get on drawing this doodle?
0:08:33 > 0:08:35'We went to Port Talbot in Wales
0:08:35 > 0:08:39'and here's all the action from the Deadly Art tent.'
0:08:39 > 0:08:41You go up like that and down.
0:08:41 > 0:08:46ALL: Deadly Art!
0:08:46 > 0:08:48ALL: This is my crown of thorns starfish.
0:08:48 > 0:08:53I liked drawing the spikes on my starfish. It was easy.
0:08:53 > 0:08:57I like the way we drew the ovals and it suddenly turned into a starfish.
0:08:57 > 0:09:02This is my doodle. I liked drawing the circle and the spiky legs.
0:09:02 > 0:09:06I enjoyed watching the picture slowly turn into a starfish.
0:09:06 > 0:09:10'They all look brilliant. Keep on doodling!
0:09:10 > 0:09:12'Let's get back to the Deadly Art studio.
0:09:12 > 0:09:15'I'm looking forward to this bit.'
0:09:15 > 0:09:17I'm finishing off this section of the seabed.
0:09:17 > 0:09:21It's going to represent the beautiful coral.
0:09:21 > 0:09:25The sad side of our story is that the starfish destroy that coral.
0:09:25 > 0:09:28That's my job right now.
0:09:30 > 0:09:32'Remember, Nicola is a trained professional.
0:09:32 > 0:09:37'Don't even think about attempting anything you see in this Big Art.
0:09:37 > 0:09:42'Smouldering! Welding is a great way to demonstrate the destroyed coral.
0:09:42 > 0:09:46'Now Nicola's got a starfish DIY for you to make at home.'
0:09:46 > 0:09:49These deadly creatures are simple to make.
0:09:49 > 0:09:52You can make your own crown of thorns starfish
0:09:52 > 0:09:56by getting hold of some basic kitchen sponges.
0:09:56 > 0:10:01Stick two together, end-to-end, using double sided sticky tape.
0:10:01 > 0:10:04This will give you the perfect length
0:10:04 > 0:10:09for each leg of your starfish. Two sponges makes two legs.
0:10:09 > 0:10:14Draw a line from corner to corner and cut through it.
0:10:14 > 0:10:18Mind your fingers. Get an adult to help you.
0:10:18 > 0:10:20'You can use scissors, but be careful.'
0:10:20 > 0:10:24Discard one of them and we'll concentrate on making one leg.
0:10:24 > 0:10:27This is where your sculpting skills will come in handy.
0:10:27 > 0:10:31We want our leg to look a bit more natural,
0:10:31 > 0:10:35so trim off the corners of each side, so it becomes rounded.
0:10:37 > 0:10:40When your leg is rounded,
0:10:40 > 0:10:43you'll need to make a little point at the end.
0:10:43 > 0:10:47You also need to take off the corner from the top edge.
0:10:47 > 0:10:50They need to fit together.
0:10:50 > 0:10:54By taking away this corner, they'll fit nice and snug.
0:10:54 > 0:10:56Don't throw these away.
0:10:56 > 0:11:00We'll use them to create this detail down the centre of each leg.
0:11:00 > 0:11:03We need to make a slit up the centre,
0:11:03 > 0:11:09leaving a section at the top and a section at the bottom.
0:11:09 > 0:11:12I'm going to use a blue off-cut from one I made earlier.
0:11:12 > 0:11:14I've stuck two together
0:11:14 > 0:11:18and the friction of the sponge will keep this in place.
0:11:18 > 0:11:23Feed it in, all the way down and trim it off.
0:11:23 > 0:11:28Now it's time for those deadly spikes! I'm using pipe cleaners.
0:11:28 > 0:11:30Cut them into small segments
0:11:30 > 0:11:35and fold over the top to remove any sharp edges.
0:11:35 > 0:11:38'You must bend the pipe cleaners over,
0:11:38 > 0:11:41'otherwise you might hurt yourself.'
0:11:41 > 0:11:46Using a scalpel, make some small holes all the way down,
0:11:46 > 0:11:48each side of the leg.
0:11:48 > 0:11:51You must get an adult to help you.
0:11:51 > 0:11:54Then pop each one into place and once again,
0:11:54 > 0:11:58the friction of the sponge will help keep it secure.
0:11:58 > 0:12:02And there it is, one starfish leg. Time to finish it off.
0:12:02 > 0:12:06I've got six more and this will fit securely into place
0:12:06 > 0:12:09with some double sided sticky tape.
0:12:09 > 0:12:13If you put magnets on here, it'll go anywhere, like the real thing.
0:12:13 > 0:12:18Finished! Now it's time for our starfish to join his deadly friends.
0:12:20 > 0:12:25'Good work, Nicola. Back to the Big Art and it's looking good.
0:12:36 > 0:12:40'That's it. They've reached the finish line.'
0:12:44 > 0:12:48I love the bright, funky colours of the starfish.
0:12:48 > 0:12:50That pop art theme works well.
0:12:50 > 0:12:54Especially in contrast to that industrial metal.
0:12:54 > 0:12:55Welding it was cool!
0:12:55 > 0:12:59We've captured the deadly nature of those crown of thorns starfish.
0:12:59 > 0:13:00Good work!
0:13:00 > 0:13:02'It's time for the big reveal.
0:13:02 > 0:13:06'I asked the Deadly Art team to recreate these killer shots
0:13:06 > 0:13:07'and turn them into art.
0:13:07 > 0:13:11'Let's take a look at the finished result.
0:13:11 > 0:13:14'Wow! Look at all those colourful starfish!
0:13:14 > 0:13:17'The starfish are all colours of the rainbow,
0:13:17 > 0:13:20'but on the flipside they are killing machines on the hunt.
0:13:20 > 0:13:25'You can sense this army of starfish laying waste to a coral reef.
0:13:25 > 0:13:30'From the dark remains of the coral to the blazing display
0:13:30 > 0:13:34'of the starfish, this is a kaleidoscope of marine munching!
0:13:34 > 0:13:39'Nice work, team! Art doesn't get any deadlier than this!'
0:13:39 > 0:13:43That was a sublime work of art. Make sure you try the doodle and the DIY
0:13:43 > 0:13:46and we'll see you next time for more Deadly Art.
