0:00:02 > 0:00:04My name is Steve Backshall and this is Deadly Art.

0:00:07 > 0:00:13I'm lucky enough to travel the world tracking Deadly Animals.

0:00:13 > 0:00:16But in this show, my team of artists take my killer moments...

0:00:19 > 0:00:22..and turn it into art.

0:00:22 > 0:00:26And we'll reveal another unique creation.

0:00:26 > 0:00:29Along the way, you'll get to pick up some tips, tricks and techniques

0:00:29 > 0:00:33so you can make some art yourself.

0:00:33 > 0:00:37This is no ordinary art show, this is Deadly Art.

0:00:41 > 0:00:42Coming up on Deadly Art...

0:00:42 > 0:00:46I get close to one of the most lethal predators in the world.

0:00:46 > 0:00:49I've never seen anything like this in my life.

0:00:49 > 0:00:53My team of artists recreate another killer moment using sand.

0:00:53 > 0:00:56It's really life-like, nice work.

0:00:56 > 0:00:59And you can get creative too.

0:01:00 > 0:01:02So what are we looking at today?

0:01:02 > 0:01:05What do you get when you put strength, stealth,

0:01:05 > 0:01:08speed and super senses together?

0:01:08 > 0:01:11Well, you get one extraordinary predator, the leopard.

0:01:11 > 0:01:15Like all big cats, their hunting abilities are second to none,

0:01:15 > 0:01:18but the leopard has super powers.

0:01:18 > 0:01:21This is an animal that can leap six metres.

0:01:21 > 0:01:26They can run towards their prey at speeds of up to 60kph

0:01:26 > 0:01:31and they use their camouflaged coat to ambush their victims.

0:01:31 > 0:01:35Today's artists are waiting in the Deadly Art studio.

0:01:35 > 0:01:37Hey, I'm Mike, I'm a cartoon artist.

0:01:37 > 0:01:41I've drawn piranhas, wolverines, and I'm up for today's Deadly Art.

0:01:43 > 0:01:46I'm Nicola and I'm the power-tool queen.

0:01:46 > 0:01:50Nicola and Mike will be representing the Deadly Art team,

0:01:50 > 0:01:52who are always up for a challenge.

0:01:52 > 0:01:55And this is a killer moment to inspire the artists -

0:01:55 > 0:01:58when a leopard stalks its prey.

0:01:58 > 0:02:03This is an awesome predator, it's completely camouflaged in the grass.

0:02:03 > 0:02:05Look at him stalking up on his prey.

0:02:05 > 0:02:08- I can't wait to get stuck into some sand.- Let's do it.

0:02:08 > 0:02:11Time for some more Deadly Art.

0:02:11 > 0:02:15This is going to very handy.

0:02:15 > 0:02:17Nicola's a professional sand sculptor,

0:02:17 > 0:02:20so you know this will be great.

0:02:20 > 0:02:22While Mike's compacting the body,

0:02:22 > 0:02:24I'll compact the head in a different way.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26This part needs to be stronger,

0:02:26 > 0:02:29and it's going to have a bit more detail.

0:02:29 > 0:02:32I've got a wooden box, lots of sand, plenty of water

0:02:32 > 0:02:34and my favourite power tool, the Wacker.

0:02:34 > 0:02:38- You might want to put these on, Mike.- Right, thanks.

0:02:38 > 0:02:42Don't try anything you see in today's Big Art.

0:02:42 > 0:02:46The Wacker compacts the sand into a cube, so Nicola can carve a head.

0:02:46 > 0:02:50I can't wait to see our Deadly Art leopard.

0:02:50 > 0:02:52I got to see the real thing in a rainy Namibia.

0:02:52 > 0:02:54It had just been battling with a warthog.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56That is so beautiful.

0:02:56 > 0:02:59'It's our first clear look at the leopard,

0:02:59 > 0:03:03'and we can see the warthog's blood on its fur.'

0:03:04 > 0:03:08There's a den there, at the base of that termite mound,

0:03:08 > 0:03:12and she's going... She's going in!

0:03:17 > 0:03:20No.

0:03:20 > 0:03:23Just can't seem to make up her mind.

0:03:23 > 0:03:25It just shows how difficult

0:03:25 > 0:03:28life is for a predator here.

0:03:28 > 0:03:30Everything they might want to eat

0:03:30 > 0:03:33has tusks, horns, hooves.

0:03:33 > 0:03:36Just imagine what it would be like if every time

0:03:36 > 0:03:38you wanted to have a meal,

0:03:38 > 0:03:40you had to put your life at risk.

0:03:40 > 0:03:42That's effectively what's happening

0:03:42 > 0:03:44for this leopard here.

0:03:44 > 0:03:46If that warthog's still alive,

0:03:46 > 0:03:48it's still a mortal danger to her.

0:03:48 > 0:03:50'And yet it's just another day

0:03:50 > 0:03:54'in the life of one of Africa's top predators.

0:03:54 > 0:03:56'More fun from our furry friend later.

0:03:56 > 0:03:58'Back to Mike and Nicola,

0:03:58 > 0:04:00'and it looks like the sand is ready to carve.'

0:04:00 > 0:04:04I've got my solid cube, now I just need to turn it into a head.

0:04:04 > 0:04:08I'm going to start by sketching in the top section of his head.

0:04:10 > 0:04:12Mike's working on the body.

0:04:12 > 0:04:14Now I have to chip away to get the shape.

0:04:16 > 0:04:20It's a big job, but it's really taking shape.

0:04:20 > 0:04:22Look at those fabulous features.

0:04:22 > 0:04:26As you can see, the head's really coming along now.

0:04:27 > 0:04:30Nicola's going to take a quick break from the sand leopard

0:04:30 > 0:04:33because it's Deadly Doodle time.

0:04:33 > 0:04:37I'm going to show you how to draw this leopard.

0:04:37 > 0:04:40We'll start with some simple shapes,

0:04:40 > 0:04:45a cup shape in the centre of your page with one straight edge.

0:04:48 > 0:04:54On top of that, towards the right, a big triangle will form his nose.

0:04:54 > 0:04:57Two more triangles here for his eyes.

0:05:00 > 0:05:02Then, add a semicircle

0:05:02 > 0:05:04from the top of that triangle

0:05:04 > 0:05:06to the centre of his nose

0:05:06 > 0:05:09and another one to the corner of his mouth.

0:05:09 > 0:05:12Then mirror that line directly above it.

0:05:12 > 0:05:16Draw a large V shape on the left-hand side,

0:05:16 > 0:05:21square it off at the bottom and do the same at the top.

0:05:21 > 0:05:26And on this platform here, add a triangle

0:05:26 > 0:05:29and the same on this side, but a lot bigger.

0:05:29 > 0:05:33In his mouth, draw a big M shape,

0:05:33 > 0:05:35and that's all we need.

0:05:35 > 0:05:38Now we can move on to the marker pen.

0:05:38 > 0:05:39He looks very angular now,

0:05:39 > 0:05:41so when you define your lines

0:05:41 > 0:05:45with a marker pen, you can be more fluid and organic.

0:05:45 > 0:05:48We will start with the ear...

0:05:48 > 0:05:50and move up onto the head,

0:05:50 > 0:05:52creating another M shape.

0:05:54 > 0:05:58Fill in that second ear, and then onto the eyes.

0:05:58 > 0:06:03To make them look extra menacing, make this top line nice and chunky.

0:06:06 > 0:06:11Fill in the pupil, then do the same on the other side.

0:06:11 > 0:06:13Two circles inside for his eyes.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20And onto his nose.

0:06:25 > 0:06:28And add that line just there in the centre.

0:06:28 > 0:06:32Draw in these cheeks.

0:06:32 > 0:06:35And curve that all the way around

0:06:35 > 0:06:37to the bottom of his mouth.

0:06:37 > 0:06:40Then his neck is using this guideline here

0:06:40 > 0:06:42all the way down,

0:06:42 > 0:06:46but his jaw comes from the top of his ear.

0:06:46 > 0:06:49So you want a second elongated V,

0:06:49 > 0:06:53then add a hairy chin at the bottom.

0:06:53 > 0:06:54Give him some fangs,

0:06:54 > 0:06:57two at the top, two at the bottom...

0:07:01 > 0:07:03..and four extra teeth in between.

0:07:05 > 0:07:07Fill in the tongue.

0:07:10 > 0:07:13Now it's time for those finer details.

0:07:13 > 0:07:18An eyebrow, some texture inside his ear and, of course,

0:07:18 > 0:07:21no leopard is complete without his spots.

0:07:21 > 0:07:23So we'll do some small ones at the top,

0:07:23 > 0:07:28and they get increasingly bigger as we move down the face.

0:07:28 > 0:07:31Then on his neck, they can be bigger yet again.

0:07:34 > 0:07:38Then just some whiskers to finish off.

0:07:41 > 0:07:44And there he is, your Deadly Doodle.

0:07:45 > 0:07:47That leopard looks great!

0:07:47 > 0:07:50Here's how some of you got on with this doodle,

0:07:50 > 0:07:53when we visited Crawley on a Deadly day out.

0:07:56 > 0:07:58You all joined the team in the Deadly Art tent

0:07:58 > 0:08:01and drew some incredible leopards with Nicola.

0:08:03 > 0:08:07Down here with this line all the way down to the bottom.

0:08:07 > 0:08:10Wow, look at those!

0:08:11 > 0:08:14Wow, I'm really, really impressed.

0:08:14 > 0:08:16Fantastic.

0:08:16 > 0:08:17Here's my Deadly Doodle of a leopard.

0:08:19 > 0:08:21Here's my Deadly Doodle.

0:08:21 > 0:08:23Here's my Deadly Doodle.

0:08:23 > 0:08:26Oh, I'm seriously impressed!

0:08:26 > 0:08:28Remember to keep on doodling.

0:08:28 > 0:08:31Let's get back to the Deadly Art studio.

0:08:31 > 0:08:32Nicola's using water and a brush

0:08:32 > 0:08:35to create the leopard's fur texture.

0:08:35 > 0:08:38And it's all about the killer stare.

0:08:38 > 0:08:40Our leopard is on the hunt,

0:08:40 > 0:08:44so we need his eyes to look really determined.

0:08:44 > 0:08:46Mike's making that powerful tail.

0:08:46 > 0:08:49That's looking nice.

0:08:49 > 0:08:51Now, one last little technique.

0:08:51 > 0:08:54If you do a little undercut like this,

0:08:54 > 0:08:56just at the base of the tail,

0:08:56 > 0:09:00it makes it really pop out from the sand.

0:09:00 > 0:09:04You can see that adding detail really makes a difference.

0:09:04 > 0:09:06Look at that huge tooth.

0:09:08 > 0:09:11Now back to a stormy Namibia,

0:09:11 > 0:09:13and our leopard had moved closer.

0:09:15 > 0:09:17I do not believe this,

0:09:17 > 0:09:20this is Africa's most elusive,

0:09:20 > 0:09:22most secretive cat just wandering round,

0:09:22 > 0:09:26trying to figure out what her next move's going to be.

0:09:29 > 0:09:32I've never seen anything like this in my life.

0:09:32 > 0:09:36If she gets any closer, don't move a muscle.

0:09:36 > 0:09:39'Knowing that she's perfectly capable

0:09:39 > 0:09:42'of springing into the back of our truck in an instant

0:09:42 > 0:09:46'certainly heightens the nerves.

0:09:46 > 0:09:50'She's closer than any of us had ever dared hope.

0:09:50 > 0:09:53'But an experience I'll never forget.

0:09:53 > 0:09:58'Let's join Mike, who's got a very cool Deadly DIY to show you.'

0:09:58 > 0:10:02I'm going to show you how to turn a normal bin into...

0:10:02 > 0:10:05the deadliest bin you've ever seen, a leopard bin.

0:10:05 > 0:10:11So you start with a normal bin and you need to cover it in fabric.

0:10:11 > 0:10:14I'm going to work on this piece, it's a plastic bottle piece,

0:10:14 > 0:10:16for our nose and our mouth.

0:10:16 > 0:10:20So we're going to get a two-litre plastic bottle.

0:10:20 > 0:10:22Just cut out the top third.

0:10:22 > 0:10:25Use half of this bottle, so cut that in half.

0:10:25 > 0:10:28Take care when you use scissors.

0:10:28 > 0:10:30OK, now we've got our plastic piece.

0:10:30 > 0:10:33We secure that to our foamboard with some tape.

0:10:33 > 0:10:35With our nose and mouth completed,

0:10:35 > 0:10:39just like our skeleton bin, got that piece done.

0:10:39 > 0:10:41Now we cover it in fabric.

0:10:41 > 0:10:46You can use normal craft glue, it just takes longer to dry.

0:10:46 > 0:10:50When you get to the end, fold that piece down to create that nose.

0:10:50 > 0:10:52Glue the top section to the lid.

0:10:52 > 0:10:55Now to cover up the middle of our mouth.

0:10:55 > 0:11:00For that, you need two foamboard pieces, same size as your lid.

0:11:00 > 0:11:02Then we add on that pink tongue.

0:11:02 > 0:11:04This is made of foam, but you could also use cardboard.

0:11:04 > 0:11:08And we've got the same thing again - a pink foam nose.

0:11:08 > 0:11:09Perfect.

0:11:09 > 0:11:11We'll use the underside of leopard fabric

0:11:11 > 0:11:14for the inside of the ear, just like that.

0:11:14 > 0:11:18So we'll glue that down first.

0:11:18 > 0:11:21OK, we'll just tuck all those pieces in.

0:11:21 > 0:11:24Then to cover up those folds, we use our other fur piece

0:11:24 > 0:11:26and glue that on top.

0:11:26 > 0:11:30Flip it over,

0:11:30 > 0:11:32fold over that flap.

0:11:32 > 0:11:36And when you've made two of them, stick them to the head.

0:11:36 > 0:11:38Right, it's really taking shape now.

0:11:38 > 0:11:40Now for the eyes.

0:11:40 > 0:11:44As you can see, we have used two pieces of a paper cup here.

0:11:44 > 0:11:46Grab our paper cup. Cut out the bottom of that,

0:11:46 > 0:11:49so it makes it really easy to cut it in half.

0:11:49 > 0:11:51Cut it in half again.

0:11:51 > 0:11:53Now we can cover them in fabric.

0:11:53 > 0:11:55Now we can work on the eyes.

0:11:55 > 0:11:59You have to get my favourite craft store item, the polystyrene ball.

0:11:59 > 0:12:02I've taken one ball and I've cut it into four sections.

0:12:02 > 0:12:04We need two of those for the eyeballs.

0:12:04 > 0:12:07I've gone ahead and

0:12:07 > 0:12:08coloured my eyeballs in.

0:12:08 > 0:12:10I've got green, yellow and black

0:12:10 > 0:12:15to offset that leopard fabric pattern.

0:12:16 > 0:12:20That's all secured, now we can attach our face back to the bin.

0:12:20 > 0:12:23Now, the last thing you need to add are those deadly teeth.

0:12:23 > 0:12:28There you have your finished deadly leopard bin. Feeding time.

0:12:28 > 0:12:31That'll make a perfect addition to any bedroom.

0:12:31 > 0:12:34Back to our sand leopard. Mike and Nicola are spraying

0:12:34 > 0:12:37beautiful spots of paint onto the sand.

0:12:42 > 0:12:45That's it, one Deadly Art leopard completed.

0:12:50 > 0:12:52I absolutely love it.

0:12:52 > 0:12:55Yeah, I'm really happy with this one.

0:12:55 > 0:12:57I love that he's larger than life

0:12:57 > 0:13:00and the muscle definition really looks like the leopard

0:13:00 > 0:13:01in that killer moment.

0:13:01 > 0:13:03And the way you've captured all that character in his face,

0:13:03 > 0:13:06it's really life-like. Nice work.

0:13:06 > 0:13:09Earlier, I asked the Deadly Art team to recreate this killer moment

0:13:09 > 0:13:10and turn it into art.

0:13:10 > 0:13:14So let's take a look at the finished result.

0:13:14 > 0:13:15I love this!

0:13:15 > 0:13:17Lurking down amongst the dry grasses,

0:13:17 > 0:13:20this sand leopard is perfectly camouflaged.

0:13:20 > 0:13:22I love the way its sinuous shoulders

0:13:22 > 0:13:27really bring out the musculature of this incredible predator.

0:13:27 > 0:13:29And the paws are huge.

0:13:29 > 0:13:34He just looks like his eyes are fixed on me ready to pounce.

0:13:34 > 0:13:36I can't believe this is just sand.

0:13:36 > 0:13:39The head and the eyes are focused on its prey.

0:13:39 > 0:13:42A perfect killer moment and a perfect Deadly Art.

0:13:43 > 0:13:46What an incredible creation!

0:13:46 > 0:13:48Make sure you try the doodle and the DIY,

0:13:48 > 0:13:51and we'll see you next time for more Deadly Art.
