0:00:02 > 0:00:05My name's Steve Backshall and this is Deadly Art.

0:00:07 > 0:00:11I'm lucky enough to travel the world tracking deadly animals.

0:00:13 > 0:00:17But in this show, my team of artists take my killer moment...

0:00:20 > 0:00:22..and turn it into art.

0:00:22 > 0:00:26We'll reveal another unique creation.

0:00:26 > 0:00:30Along the way, you'll get to pick up some tips, tricks and techniques

0:00:30 > 0:00:33so you can make some art yourself.

0:00:33 > 0:00:37This is no ordinary art show, this is Deadly Art.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43Coming up on Deadly Art, I take on a tough challenge

0:00:43 > 0:00:46to see if I can compete with today's deadly animal.

0:00:46 > 0:00:48I'm never going to make it!

0:00:48 > 0:00:52The artists recreate a killer piece of art using glass.

0:00:52 > 0:00:55With a simple bend, the glass breaks.

0:00:55 > 0:00:59And we'll show you how to draw another deadly doodle

0:00:59 > 0:01:01to impress your friends.

0:01:01 > 0:01:05What if I was to tell you that today's animal had superpowers

0:01:05 > 0:01:07just like Spiderman,

0:01:07 > 0:01:12with stick-on feet that enable it to climb any horizontal wall,

0:01:12 > 0:01:16excellent night vision and amazing agility and speed?

0:01:16 > 0:01:19This is the Tokay gecko.

0:01:19 > 0:01:24Its name comes from the very loud call it makes at night.

0:01:24 > 0:01:25"Tokay! Tokay!"

0:01:25 > 0:01:28Especially when it's out on a hunt.

0:01:28 > 0:01:33Many geckos are content to snack on things like moths and mosquitoes,

0:01:33 > 0:01:36but the Tokay is so large, it's capable of eating

0:01:36 > 0:01:39the largest of insects and even other lizards.

0:01:39 > 0:01:43Found in the jungles and cities of Asia, this is no ordinary gecko.

0:01:43 > 0:01:49But, then again, this is no ordinary art show. Time to meet our artists.

0:01:49 > 0:01:53So, who's taking on the Deadly Art challenge today?

0:01:53 > 0:01:57I'm Michelle and I love working with different materials.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00I'm all about getting stuck in.

0:02:00 > 0:02:06I'm Jo. I'm a painter, sculptor and a general mess-maker.

0:02:06 > 0:02:09Michelle and Jo will be representing the Deadly Art team,

0:02:09 > 0:02:12who are always up for a challenge.

0:02:12 > 0:02:15Here's today's killer moment to inspire the artwork -

0:02:15 > 0:02:20when a gecko catapults itself in a display of super-strength

0:02:20 > 0:02:23and stick-on stealth.

0:02:27 > 0:02:31For me, it's the feet. I love the way they stick to walls.

0:02:31 > 0:02:34The claws will work really well in stained glass.

0:02:34 > 0:02:36It's something we've not done before.

0:02:36 > 0:02:40It's going to be tricky, but really beautiful.

0:02:40 > 0:02:42Time for some more Deadly Art.

0:02:47 > 0:02:49This is a design for the stained-glass window.

0:02:49 > 0:02:54I need to divide it into sections to show where the glass will go.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56The head will be in five sections.

0:02:56 > 0:03:00We've got orange glass for the eyes and green for the body.

0:03:02 > 0:03:04Using glass is a first for our art team,

0:03:04 > 0:03:07so let's hope it comes together.

0:03:07 > 0:03:09One of the great things about travelling

0:03:09 > 0:03:11is that some animals aren't hard to find.

0:03:11 > 0:03:15The Tokay gecko is found all over Asia in forests and cities.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17It's their climbing ability

0:03:17 > 0:03:19that makes them worthy of

0:03:19 > 0:03:21a place on the Deadly 60.

0:03:21 > 0:03:25Let's get a closer look at the feet that are clamping down on my thumb.

0:03:26 > 0:03:31On the end of every one of those toes is a sharp claw,

0:03:31 > 0:03:34almost like the talon of a bird of prey,

0:03:34 > 0:03:38and that'll cling to tiny imperfections in bark or in bricks.

0:03:38 > 0:03:40But, even better than that,

0:03:40 > 0:03:46every one of those toes...is lined with something even more miraculous.

0:03:46 > 0:03:52Each toe is covered with fine hairs you can only see under a microscope.

0:03:52 > 0:03:56They allow it to cling to vertical surfaces or even overhanging ones.

0:03:56 > 0:03:59The Tokay gecko is, to my mind,

0:03:59 > 0:04:03the finest climbing insect killer in the world.

0:04:03 > 0:04:06That on its own ought to be enough to get on my list,

0:04:06 > 0:04:11but we don't just tell you how cool animals are, we like to show you.

0:04:11 > 0:04:16Our Tokay gecko is munching its way through the local moth population

0:04:16 > 0:04:20up there. So I'm going to go and join him.

0:04:20 > 0:04:23I'm going to climb that building later.

0:04:23 > 0:04:27Back to Michelle and Jo in the Deadly Art studio.

0:04:27 > 0:04:29Cutting glass is easier than you think.

0:04:29 > 0:04:31I've drawn a shape onto the glass

0:04:31 > 0:04:36and now, I'm using a scorer to go along the line.

0:04:37 > 0:04:40Although you can't really see the score mark...

0:04:42 > 0:04:45..with a simple bend, the glass breaks.

0:04:45 > 0:04:49I love how easily that glass snaps, but remember,

0:04:49 > 0:04:52Michelle has been trained and is wearing protective gear.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55- You mustn't try this at home. - Fits perfectly.

0:04:55 > 0:04:57- Is that ready to go?- Yeah.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00I'm going to take off the sharp edges using a polishing machine.

0:05:00 > 0:05:03When I've finished, they'll fit in the frame.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06It wouldn't be Deadly Art without using machinery.

0:05:06 > 0:05:09Now Jo's going to show you a Deadly doodle.

0:05:09 > 0:05:14This Deadly doodle is a colourful Tokay gecko.

0:05:16 > 0:05:20As always, we're going to start with the basic shapes.

0:05:20 > 0:05:22Our first one is an oval.

0:05:22 > 0:05:24And then, from the bottom of that,

0:05:24 > 0:05:28a large curve, which will be the bottom of the gecko's jaw.

0:05:28 > 0:05:34Coming out the top of that oval will be a big C shape for its body,

0:05:34 > 0:05:39all the way around to the tip of its tail and then back up again.

0:05:39 > 0:05:43And for its legs, I'm going to put in arrow shapes.

0:05:48 > 0:05:51And then, for its feet, they are just circles

0:05:51 > 0:05:55with little circles around them where his toes are going to go.

0:05:55 > 0:06:00On to the big round eyes. This one that's close to us is just a circle,

0:06:00 > 0:06:03but the one further away is more of an oval shape.

0:06:03 > 0:06:06And then, to add some detailing to its mouth.

0:06:06 > 0:06:09Its jaw comes down, and then another curve under like that,

0:06:09 > 0:06:11and then put in his tongue.

0:06:12 > 0:06:18OK, now I'm going to go over it with a marker pen. Let's get some eyelids.

0:06:19 > 0:06:22And those reptilian pupils.

0:06:25 > 0:06:27I'm going to put two lines coming down...

0:06:27 > 0:06:30to his nose and some tiny little nostrils.

0:06:30 > 0:06:34Around his head. I'm just going over the guidelines I already made.

0:06:34 > 0:06:38Now the back of his body, and he's got ridges going all the way along.

0:06:38 > 0:06:40Right up to the tail.

0:06:40 > 0:06:43And where those circles are for his toes,

0:06:43 > 0:06:48I'm going up and around, up and around, in a big wiggly line.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51And then over to those spiky claws.

0:06:53 > 0:06:57For his back leg, I'm just going to give him a little curve

0:06:57 > 0:07:03and another little wiggly line for a few toes and claws.

0:07:03 > 0:07:06- Let's give it some colour. - This is the fun bit.

0:07:06 > 0:07:09Jo's using a wax crayon to draw the dots.

0:07:09 > 0:07:14All the markings are so individual, you can do whatever you want.

0:07:14 > 0:07:17Now, for his eyes, I'm going to go for the bright yellow.

0:07:17 > 0:07:22And then brush it all over with watered-down paint.

0:07:23 > 0:07:26There we have it. A lovely, spotty Tokay gecko.

0:07:26 > 0:07:28Great gecko, Jo!

0:07:28 > 0:07:31We visited Port Talbot in Wales on a Deadly day out.

0:07:31 > 0:07:34Here's how some of you got on with this doodle.

0:07:34 > 0:07:37Our first shape is an oval shape.

0:07:38 > 0:07:39Now for those legs.

0:07:39 > 0:07:43- ALL:- Deadly Art!

0:07:43 > 0:07:45I enjoyed drawing the claws

0:07:45 > 0:07:49because that's my favourite part in animal bodies.

0:07:49 > 0:07:53I liked drawing the spikes because they're like the top of the castle.

0:07:53 > 0:07:55- ALL:- We love geckos!

0:07:55 > 0:07:59You're all budding Deadly artists. Very impressed.

0:07:59 > 0:08:01Remember to keep on doodling.

0:08:01 > 0:08:05Let's get back to the studio and our stained-glass window.

0:08:05 > 0:08:10We're fixing the shapes into the frame using a method called leading.

0:08:10 > 0:08:14This is lead cane and it's used to join the glass together.

0:08:14 > 0:08:18First, I cut it to the right length... It is a really soft metal.

0:08:18 > 0:08:21..and bend it around the glass.

0:08:22 > 0:08:26That is the eye and it's ready to slot into place.

0:08:28 > 0:08:33When the glass and lead are in place, they're ready to be glued together.

0:08:33 > 0:08:38I'm using a soldering iron and lead - the soldering iron melts the lead

0:08:38 > 0:08:41and when it cools down, it's fused together.

0:08:41 > 0:08:43In Thailand, it was time for my

0:08:43 > 0:08:45Tokay gecko climbing challenge.

0:08:45 > 0:08:48Let's see how the best of British, me,

0:08:48 > 0:08:51compares to the wizard of the wall, the Tokay gecko.

0:08:56 > 0:09:00My first problem is balance.

0:09:00 > 0:09:05Something the gecko solves easily with its tail.

0:09:05 > 0:09:09And I can't get my fingers into the cracks

0:09:09 > 0:09:12between these bricks. They're just too small.

0:09:12 > 0:09:15Fingernails on the end of every toe for the gecko,

0:09:15 > 0:09:19perfect for hooking into imperfections in bricks.

0:09:19 > 0:09:22I'm never going to make it!

0:09:23 > 0:09:27That's one small victory, at least.

0:09:27 > 0:09:30Yay! Thank you very much.

0:09:32 > 0:09:34My next problem is sweat.

0:09:34 > 0:09:38I've got sweat getting into my fingers, stopping me gripping,

0:09:38 > 0:09:42and the gecko doesn't have to deal with that at all.

0:09:44 > 0:09:48This is the really hard bit. Up over the top.

0:09:50 > 0:09:52Geckos cling effortlessly

0:09:52 > 0:09:53to overhangs.

0:09:53 > 0:09:56For me, it's near impossible.

0:09:58 > 0:10:00Look at that! There's a little gecko

0:10:00 > 0:10:02climbing right alongside me.

0:10:02 > 0:10:05That's just showing off!

0:10:06 > 0:10:07Almost there.

0:10:08 > 0:10:10Woo-hoo!

0:10:10 > 0:10:12I did it in about four minutes,

0:10:12 > 0:10:13compared to the super gecko,

0:10:13 > 0:10:17who does it in around 30 seconds.

0:10:17 > 0:10:21Over to Michelle, who has a cool gecko DIY for you.

0:10:22 > 0:10:26I'm going to show you how to make your very own gecko fridge magnet.

0:10:26 > 0:10:31I've grabbed Jo's doodle, stuck it to the back of some cardboard

0:10:31 > 0:10:33and cut around it.

0:10:33 > 0:10:36This is going to make our fridge magnet sturdy.

0:10:36 > 0:10:39Next, separate the top half of the head from the bottom half.

0:10:39 > 0:10:43I'm going to use a scalpel. You can also use scissors.

0:10:43 > 0:10:48Very carefully, you're going to cut around the top half of the head.

0:10:48 > 0:10:51You must have adult supervision to do this.

0:10:51 > 0:10:56Just following those lines of the doodle all the way around.

0:10:57 > 0:11:00That should nice and simply pop out.

0:11:00 > 0:11:02I've got a small piece of card.

0:11:02 > 0:11:06I'm going to stick the remaining part of the body on to this card.

0:11:06 > 0:11:09I've got some glue here.

0:11:13 > 0:11:17Very carefully stick it down.

0:11:17 > 0:11:22Once that's stuck, we need to build up the rest of the gecko's mouth.

0:11:22 > 0:11:24As you can see,

0:11:24 > 0:11:28you've got the nice black bit and the red around the edges.

0:11:28 > 0:11:33Michelle is using a wax crayon to colour the inside of the mouth.

0:11:33 > 0:11:37There you have the inside of the gecko's mouth.

0:11:37 > 0:11:42All you do next is cut round the rest of this white cardboard.

0:11:43 > 0:11:46Now you've got rid of the excess cardboard,

0:11:46 > 0:11:48you're going to get a clothes peg

0:11:48 > 0:11:52and stick this to the back of the gecko's mouth.

0:11:52 > 0:11:57You can use craft glue, but it takes a little bit longer to dry.

0:11:57 > 0:12:01You're going to run a thin strip of glue along the top part of the peg,

0:12:01 > 0:12:06grab the top part of the gecko's face and stick it on the top.

0:12:06 > 0:12:08Give it a little press.

0:12:08 > 0:12:13This is really clever, because the gecko's mouth can open and close,

0:12:13 > 0:12:17so you can put different notes inside or reminders - it's wicked.

0:12:17 > 0:12:19We need it to stick to something,

0:12:19 > 0:12:22so we're going to get some magnetic strips,

0:12:22 > 0:12:27which you can get from any craft store, and stick these on the back.

0:12:29 > 0:12:34And there you have your very cool, very funky gecko fridge magnet.

0:12:34 > 0:12:38I'm going to put a little note inside that one. I love geckos!

0:12:43 > 0:12:45Back to our stained-glass window,

0:12:45 > 0:12:49and Jo and Michelle are racing to the finish,

0:12:49 > 0:12:54sealing the lead into place with solder and painting those dots.

0:12:56 > 0:13:00This was a really different way of representing a killer moment

0:13:00 > 0:13:04and that gecko looks like it's walking up the glass.

0:13:04 > 0:13:07The colours really show off the gecko's skin.

0:13:07 > 0:13:11- Let's hope it looks impressive with a light shining behind it.- It will.

0:13:11 > 0:13:13So it's nearly time for the big reveal.

0:13:13 > 0:13:18I asked the team to recreate this killer moment and turn it into art.

0:13:18 > 0:13:21Let's take a look at the finished result.

0:13:21 > 0:13:23Oh, that is glorious!

0:13:23 > 0:13:25The spots really stand out

0:13:25 > 0:13:28and the feet just seem to be sticking to the glass.

0:13:28 > 0:13:32I love the way this window lives in the vertical world,

0:13:32 > 0:13:34the same way a gecko does.

0:13:34 > 0:13:39It's actually very beautiful, but let's not forget, deadly.

0:13:39 > 0:13:40Well done, team.

0:13:40 > 0:13:44What an incredible creation! Make sure you try the doodle and the DIY

0:13:44 > 0:13:47and we'll see you next time for more Deadly Art.
