0:00:02 > 0:00:03This is Deadly Art!
0:00:07 > 0:00:11I'm lucky enough to travel the world tracking deadly animals.
0:00:13 > 0:00:17But in this show, my team of artists take my killer moments...
0:00:19 > 0:00:22..and turn it into art.
0:00:22 > 0:00:26'And we'll reveal another unique creation.
0:00:26 > 0:00:28'Along the way, you'll get to pick up some tips,
0:00:28 > 0:00:31'tricks and techniques, so you can make some art yourself.'
0:00:33 > 0:00:37'This is no ordinary art show. This is Deadly Art!'
0:00:38 > 0:00:41'Coming up on Deadly Art...
0:00:41 > 0:00:45'I travel to Mexico and come face to face with a giant of the deep.'
0:00:45 > 0:00:47Amazing! Absolutely amazing!
0:00:47 > 0:00:50'My artists recreate another killer moment.'
0:00:50 > 0:00:52With the red against the black,
0:00:52 > 0:00:55it really makes this huge monster stand out.
0:00:55 > 0:00:57'And you can make some deadly art at home too.'
0:01:00 > 0:01:03Today's creature from the deep is one of the most fearsome
0:01:03 > 0:01:06and deadly killers in the ocean.
0:01:06 > 0:01:08Nicknamed "the Red Devil,"
0:01:08 > 0:01:12these killer molluscs are like something out of a sci-fi movie.
0:01:12 > 0:01:14Meet the Humboldt squid.
0:01:14 > 0:01:16These creatures can be two metres long,
0:01:16 > 0:01:18which is longer than I am tall.
0:01:18 > 0:01:21But it's not just their size that makes them deadly.
0:01:21 > 0:01:24They have suckers ringed with razor-sharp teeth,
0:01:24 > 0:01:28and a beak that can bite clean through bone.
0:01:28 > 0:01:31They're totally fearless and have been known to attack sharks
0:01:31 > 0:01:33and even to threaten divers.
0:01:33 > 0:01:37What will our artists make of this monster? Let's meet them.
0:01:37 > 0:01:39I'm Jo, I'm a painter...
0:01:39 > 0:01:42..sculptor...
0:01:42 > 0:01:44..and a general mess maker!
0:01:45 > 0:01:47I'm Nicola.
0:01:47 > 0:01:51I'm an ice-sculptor, a sand sculptor,
0:01:51 > 0:01:52and a power tool queen.
0:01:52 > 0:01:56Jo and Nicola are representing the Deadly Art team,
0:01:56 > 0:01:58who are always up for a challenge.
0:01:58 > 0:02:02And this is the unusual killer moment I've chosen
0:02:02 > 0:02:04to inspire our artists.
0:02:04 > 0:02:08'When I got a little bit too close to this squid for its liking,
0:02:08 > 0:02:11'it squirted a cloud of defensive ink right at me!'
0:02:14 > 0:02:18Well, this squid is like a sea monster from a sci-fi movie.
0:02:18 > 0:02:21We're going to do a painting, but it's going to be enormous.
0:02:21 > 0:02:26Yes, really bright, really bold and, as with all sci-fi movies,
0:02:26 > 0:02:28let's use special effects on that killer moment.
0:02:28 > 0:02:31'Great! Time for some more Deadly Art.'
0:02:32 > 0:02:35'I haven't got a clue what all that equipment's for.
0:02:35 > 0:02:38'Can't wait to see this one take shape.
0:02:38 > 0:02:41'On Deadly 60, the crew and I travelled to the Sea of Cortez
0:02:41 > 0:02:45'in Mexico, to meet these incredible but seriously scary squid.'
0:02:45 > 0:02:50During the day, these squid are about 200 metres plus underwater.
0:02:50 > 0:02:52But it's dusk, the sun's going down,
0:02:52 > 0:02:56and they'll be coming closer to the surface to feed.
0:02:56 > 0:02:59They're going to see if they can pull something in.
0:02:59 > 0:03:04And when they do, we'll see our first squid.
0:03:04 > 0:03:08'I have so much respect for these fishermen, dragging up squid
0:03:08 > 0:03:11'with just a line, a lure and a whole lot of sweat.'
0:03:12 > 0:03:15We've got something big coming in.
0:03:17 > 0:03:19I'm just so excited!
0:03:26 > 0:03:28How much line has he put in here?!
0:03:29 > 0:03:34I see it! I see something! I can see a light shape coming up towards us.
0:03:34 > 0:03:39Here it comes. Oh, look at that! Yes!
0:03:39 > 0:03:45Yes! Wow! Look at the colours pulsing down the body.
0:03:45 > 0:03:47I can't believe it!
0:03:47 > 0:03:50There's the beak, he's pointing out to us there. That's the danger end.
0:03:50 > 0:03:53I can't believe he's letting fingers get that close to it!
0:03:53 > 0:03:57Look at that, it's like a giant parrot's beak.
0:03:57 > 0:04:00It can cut straight through flesh and even bone.
0:04:00 > 0:04:03It would easily take off one of my fingers.
0:04:03 > 0:04:06Right, look down the length of all these tentacles.
0:04:06 > 0:04:10Each one has sucker-cups running all the way down the length of it,
0:04:10 > 0:04:15and every one of those sucker-cups is wringed with razor-sharp teeth.
0:04:15 > 0:04:19Look at that. They're like the teeth of a piranha.
0:04:19 > 0:04:21They'll slice through flesh,
0:04:21 > 0:04:25and they use those to catch a hold of slippery sardines
0:04:25 > 0:04:29and small fish that they're going to be eating, and draw them in.
0:04:29 > 0:04:30I don't believe it.
0:04:30 > 0:04:32Our next step has to be get in the water
0:04:32 > 0:04:34and get close to them in their own environment.
0:04:34 > 0:04:36'We returned the squid to the sea,
0:04:36 > 0:04:40'and you'll see just how frightening they can be later on.
0:04:40 > 0:04:43'How are Jo and Nicola getting on with the Deadly Art version?'
0:04:43 > 0:04:46I started by sketching in the squid.
0:04:46 > 0:04:48I want him to look dramatic and full of movement.
0:04:48 > 0:04:52His tentacles are going to come out from the beak and go everywhere.
0:04:52 > 0:04:54Look at this gorgeous red I've mixed.
0:04:54 > 0:04:58This is going to be the base coat. Let's start getting those arms in.
0:04:58 > 0:05:01'Our squid will look striking with that vivid palette.'
0:05:01 > 0:05:05I'm creating a gloomy atmosphere using this dark,
0:05:05 > 0:05:06murky paint I've mixed up.
0:05:06 > 0:05:11And that's going to create a real monster-of-the-deep feel.
0:05:12 > 0:05:16This squid is really taking shape, and with the red against the black,
0:05:16 > 0:05:20it really makes this huge monster stand out.
0:05:20 > 0:05:22'This canvas is going to look great.
0:05:22 > 0:05:26'I'm really excited about seeing the finished result later.
0:05:26 > 0:05:29'Jo's going to take a break. She's got a Deadly Doodle for you.'
0:05:29 > 0:05:32I'm going to show you how to draw this Deadly Doodle
0:05:32 > 0:05:33of a Humboldt squid.
0:05:33 > 0:05:36We're going to start off with our pencil,
0:05:36 > 0:05:39make a triangle in the top corner of the page,
0:05:39 > 0:05:43and then two bowed lines coming down into the middle.
0:05:43 > 0:05:47And two ovals for its eyes. Now for its arms.
0:05:47 > 0:05:50'A squid has eight arms.
0:05:50 > 0:05:55'The diamonds represent the clubs on the two longer feeding tentacles.
0:05:57 > 0:06:02Now I'm, with my black pen, just going over all of my lines.
0:06:02 > 0:06:06These arms that are curling round like that, they're a bit tricky.
0:06:06 > 0:06:09So you go up like this and around. Stop.
0:06:10 > 0:06:14Come to here, and you're just fattening them up.
0:06:17 > 0:06:18Then the diamonds...
0:06:20 > 0:06:25And then, I'm going to bring round the tentacles to the body.
0:06:28 > 0:06:31We need two more, a bit further in the background.
0:06:32 > 0:06:36Let's put those deadly eyes in, make him look really fierce.
0:06:36 > 0:06:40And all we're doing for the suckers is tiny little squiggly circles,
0:06:40 > 0:06:43all the way along the underside of his arms,
0:06:43 > 0:06:45and then onto the diamonds.
0:06:45 > 0:06:48Bit of definition.
0:06:48 > 0:06:52And there you have it! The deadly Humboldt squid.
0:06:52 > 0:06:54Is that deadly enough for you?
0:06:54 > 0:06:55'Well done, Jo.
0:06:55 > 0:07:00'We visited Crawley on a Deadly Day Out. Here's how your squid looked
0:07:00 > 0:07:02'when some of you drew them in the Deadly Art tent.'
0:07:02 > 0:07:05So I'm going to go directly over this line...
0:07:05 > 0:07:09like that. The tentacles or the arms...
0:07:09 > 0:07:12ALL: Is that deadly enough for ya?!
0:07:12 > 0:07:13This is my squid doodle!
0:07:13 > 0:07:17I enjoyed doing my squid doodle cos it was really fun for me.
0:07:17 > 0:07:18This is my squid doodle!
0:07:18 > 0:07:22I really enjoyed it. Jo's a really good artist
0:07:22 > 0:07:24and she really helped me with it.
0:07:24 > 0:07:26- I'm Ellie.- And I'm Elizabeth.
0:07:26 > 0:07:28BOTH: And we've just drawn a squid doodle.
0:07:28 > 0:07:31I'm Megan and this is my squid doodle.
0:07:31 > 0:07:35'Those squid look sensational. Keep practising your doodles.
0:07:35 > 0:07:39'Let's get back to the Deadly Art studio, and our vibrant canvas!'
0:07:39 > 0:07:42So, the base coat of our giant squid is complete.
0:07:42 > 0:07:46And I've used some different shades of red here,
0:07:46 > 0:07:49to give some shadows and some shading to the arms and tentacles,
0:07:49 > 0:07:52to really show off that three-dimensional effect.
0:07:52 > 0:07:57And now, using this peachy, skin colour, I'm adding on the suckers.
0:07:57 > 0:08:00'The colours are so striking. I love the tentacles!'
0:08:02 > 0:08:04I'm using these amazing ultraviolet paints,
0:08:04 > 0:08:07which is our science-fiction special effect.
0:08:07 > 0:08:12Look at this. When you shine the ultraviolet light on it, it glows.
0:08:12 > 0:08:14- Who-o-o-a, that's amazing. - Looking good.
0:08:14 > 0:08:16'What a great idea!
0:08:16 > 0:08:21'In Mexico, we weren't sure how giant a squid we were going to find.
0:08:21 > 0:08:25'So, to protect ourselves from their sharp teeth and beak,
0:08:25 > 0:08:28'we needed chain mail suits, like underwater Medieval knights.
0:08:28 > 0:08:30'But we found a giant!'
0:08:30 > 0:08:32Look at it now, covering the camera!
0:08:34 > 0:08:37Oh, look at the colour change there!
0:08:37 > 0:08:40Bright red, look at the pulsing there!
0:08:41 > 0:08:43'Even though this squid seems calm,
0:08:43 > 0:08:47'you can never be too careful with a fierce predator like this.
0:08:47 > 0:08:50'Good job safety diver Scott was on hand.'
0:08:50 > 0:08:55It's actually...AGH! Dear me, this...A-AGH!
0:08:55 > 0:08:57The strength of the beak!
0:08:57 > 0:09:01It just actually bit me through the chain mail suit!
0:09:03 > 0:09:05It really pinched my arm!
0:09:08 > 0:09:12You can see how easy it would be for a creature like this
0:09:12 > 0:09:16to power itself away using that siphon.
0:09:16 > 0:09:21But also, to create that smokescreen that's going to make it
0:09:21 > 0:09:26almost impossible for another predator that uses sight to hunt by
0:09:26 > 0:09:28to find the Humboldt squid.
0:09:30 > 0:09:32That really is one of the weirdest,
0:09:32 > 0:09:36most beautiful creatures I've ever seen.
0:09:39 > 0:09:42OK, Scott. I'm just going to release it, now.
0:09:48 > 0:09:51Amazing! Absolutely amazing!
0:09:51 > 0:09:56'So beautiful as it swims off. Now, ever wished you had squid tentacles?
0:09:56 > 0:09:59'Nicola has a dazzling DIY for you.'
0:09:59 > 0:10:01Check this out. Giant squid arm.
0:10:01 > 0:10:04I'm going to show you how to make one of these.
0:10:04 > 0:10:07Take a piece of foam tubing, and some wire.
0:10:07 > 0:10:12Fold the end over and post it in like that.
0:10:12 > 0:10:14And then spiral the wire...
0:10:14 > 0:10:17Get an adult to help you for this bit.
0:10:17 > 0:10:18This will enable you to bend
0:10:18 > 0:10:21and pose your squid arm any which way you like.
0:10:21 > 0:10:26Next, take a big triangle of foam...
0:10:26 > 0:10:28'You can get foam from any craft shop.'
0:10:28 > 0:10:32We're going to fix this tubing all the way down, leaving a section
0:10:32 > 0:10:36at the top and a piece sticking out at the bottom for a handle.
0:10:36 > 0:10:40'You can use craft glue, but it just takes a little longer to dry.'
0:10:40 > 0:10:42When that's firmly in position,
0:10:42 > 0:10:46wrap this edge around to meet this one,
0:10:48 > 0:10:51and fix it using some tape.
0:10:53 > 0:10:57When that's secure, finally pull this flap down.
0:11:01 > 0:11:04Now we're ready to make our sucker section.
0:11:04 > 0:11:09For that, use a big piece of foam and draw on a big triangle.
0:11:13 > 0:11:15And cut it out.
0:11:15 > 0:11:17'Be careful when you use scissors.'
0:11:21 > 0:11:26Next, mark on where you want your suckers to be.
0:11:26 > 0:11:28And then using these suction cups,
0:11:28 > 0:11:31which you can get from any DIY store...
0:11:31 > 0:11:33'Make sure an adult does this section.'
0:11:33 > 0:11:36..we'll attach those by cutting out a small diamond
0:11:36 > 0:11:42on each of these marks. Pop one of these into each hole,
0:11:43 > 0:11:45flip it over,
0:11:45 > 0:11:48and with a little bit of glue fix them into position.
0:11:50 > 0:11:53When you've done that all the way down,
0:11:53 > 0:11:57it should look like this.
0:11:58 > 0:12:03Take your squid arm and glue this over the tape.
0:12:10 > 0:12:11Finished!
0:12:11 > 0:12:17And now, if you make two of them, you can have your own pair of squid arms!
0:12:17 > 0:12:21'Great fun! I'll persuade the Deadly 60 team to make some!
0:12:21 > 0:12:24'Back to the Big Art. It's all coming together nicely.'
0:12:24 > 0:12:28OK, the squid is almost complete, except for one secret ingredient.
0:12:28 > 0:12:32In this airbrush is invisible, ultraviolet paint,
0:12:32 > 0:12:36and when we switch the ultraviolet light on, all will be revealed.
0:12:36 > 0:12:39- 'What a superb special effect!' - OK, Nic!
0:12:40 > 0:12:42Yes, let's check it out.
0:12:42 > 0:12:46That UV paint really brings that killer moment to life.
0:12:46 > 0:12:49Those vibrant colours on that huge body make it stand out
0:12:49 > 0:12:50against the dark depths.
0:12:50 > 0:12:55I'm so happy, those suckers look really dramatic. Totally deadly.
0:12:55 > 0:12:57'It's nearly time for the Big Reveal.
0:12:57 > 0:13:02'I asked the team to recreate this killer moment, and turn it into art.
0:13:02 > 0:13:05'Let's take a look at the finished result.
0:13:05 > 0:13:07'That is one of the most breathtaking pieces
0:13:07 > 0:13:09'we have ever had on Deadly Art.
0:13:09 > 0:13:13'The colours are so vibrant against that black background.
0:13:13 > 0:13:16'It's just like the pulsating red devil of the deep
0:13:16 > 0:13:18'against the darkness of the deep sea.
0:13:20 > 0:13:21'Oh, what a transformation!
0:13:21 > 0:13:25'When the UV lights are switched on, it really comes to life.
0:13:25 > 0:13:28'That ghostly glow is just transfixing,
0:13:28 > 0:13:31'tendrils of ink just billowing out through the water.
0:13:31 > 0:13:35'Brilliant! Well done, Team. Art doesn't get any deadlier than this.'
0:13:35 > 0:13:39What an incredible creation! Make sure you try the Doodle and the DIY,
0:13:39 > 0:13:42and we'll see you next time for more Deadly Art!
