0:00:02 > 0:00:05My name is Steve Backshall and this is Deadly Art.

0:00:07 > 0:00:11I'm lucky enough to travel the world tracking deadly animals.

0:00:13 > 0:00:17But in this show, my team of artists take my killer moment...

0:00:19 > 0:00:21..and turn it into art.

0:00:21 > 0:00:24And we'll reveal another unique creation.

0:00:26 > 0:00:29Along the way, you'll get to pick up some tips, tricks, and techniques,

0:00:29 > 0:00:31so you can make some art yourself.

0:00:33 > 0:00:35This is no ordinary art show.

0:00:35 > 0:00:37This is Deadly Art!

0:00:41 > 0:00:42Coming up on Deadly Art...

0:00:42 > 0:00:46I'm seriously creeped out by today's deadly predator.

0:00:46 > 0:00:48HE YELLS AND LAUGHS

0:00:48 > 0:00:51My team of artists recreate another killer piece of art.

0:00:51 > 0:00:54If a centipede this small gives Steve the creeps,

0:00:54 > 0:00:57he's not going to like our giant one!

0:00:57 > 0:00:59And you can get creative, too.

0:00:59 > 0:01:03Art doesn't get any deadlier than this.

0:01:03 > 0:01:07Today's creature is guaranteed to give both you and I the creeps.

0:01:07 > 0:01:11The spine-chilling Scutigera centipede.

0:01:11 > 0:01:13You might have seen a relative in your garden.

0:01:13 > 0:01:16Of course, those are relatively harmless,

0:01:16 > 0:01:17unless you are a very small insect.

0:01:17 > 0:01:20But that's not the case with the Scutigera.

0:01:20 > 0:01:23They can get to be up to 20 centimetres long.

0:01:23 > 0:01:26And they have a highly venomous bite.

0:01:26 > 0:01:28They scuttle around hunting their prey

0:01:28 > 0:01:32on 15 pairs of long, spindly legs,

0:01:32 > 0:01:34and their snack of choice?

0:01:34 > 0:01:38Beetles, spiders, wasps, cockroaches,

0:01:38 > 0:01:40even, occasionally, a television presenter.

0:01:40 > 0:01:43Oh, it's crawling over my arm!

0:01:43 > 0:01:45HE SHUDDERS

0:01:45 > 0:01:49Still watching? Well, let's see if our artists are quite as brave.

0:01:49 > 0:01:52Time to meet them in the Deadly Art studio.

0:01:53 > 0:01:57I'm Michelle, and I just love working with different materials.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00I'm all about getting stuck in.

0:02:01 > 0:02:06I'm Jo, I'm a painter, a sculptor, and a general mess maker.

0:02:06 > 0:02:10Michelle and Jo are representing the Deadly Art team,

0:02:10 > 0:02:12who are always up for a challenge.

0:02:12 > 0:02:15And here are the killer shots to inspire their artwork.

0:02:15 > 0:02:19Just look at those long, spindly, creepy-crawly legs.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22Really, it's as simple as that.

0:02:22 > 0:02:25Urgh. Even the word "centipede" makes me cringe.

0:02:25 > 0:02:29It's the way they scuttle along that makes them so frightening.

0:02:29 > 0:02:31We need long legs, shell-like body.

0:02:31 > 0:02:33This is going to be a sculpture

0:02:33 > 0:02:35- even Steve Backshall will be scared of.- Bring it on!

0:02:35 > 0:02:37Me? Scared? Never!

0:02:37 > 0:02:39Time for some more Deadly Art.

0:02:39 > 0:02:42It looks like it's going to be a sculpture made from wood,

0:02:42 > 0:02:45lots of metal joints, and a load of copper pipes.

0:02:45 > 0:02:48I bet they're going to be its legs.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53We want our centipede to look hard and armoured

0:02:53 > 0:02:55so we're using metal for our sculpture.

0:02:55 > 0:02:59We've copper piping for the legs, but these guys don't just have one pair,

0:02:59 > 0:03:00they have 15 sets of them.

0:03:00 > 0:03:03That's why we're cutting these down to size.

0:03:03 > 0:03:06I can't think of anything more suitable to use.

0:03:06 > 0:03:09This Scutigera artwork is going to be massively creepy.

0:03:09 > 0:03:14On Deadly 60, I found myself in one of the creepiest places on earth.

0:03:14 > 0:03:18Teeming with millions of cockroaches that provide a tasty snack

0:03:18 > 0:03:21for the ultimate, deadly, creepy-crawly predator.

0:03:21 > 0:03:25This is the Scutigera, the long legged centipede,

0:03:25 > 0:03:27I think there's another on the other side of the rock.

0:03:27 > 0:03:32I'm being very careful about how I handle this.

0:03:32 > 0:03:37It is quite venomous. One of the guys who was living in the area here

0:03:37 > 0:03:40was bitten by one of these not long ago, and spent a week in hospital.

0:03:40 > 0:03:43So, I'm taking a lot of care not to get bitten.

0:03:43 > 0:03:46Oh, it's run over my arm!

0:03:46 > 0:03:48HE SHUDDERS

0:03:48 > 0:03:51Join me later for more centipede action, if you dare.

0:03:51 > 0:03:55But, how are our art team getting on with the creepiest of crawlies?

0:03:55 > 0:03:58We've cut out our pipes and are using plumbing joints to construct legs.

0:03:58 > 0:04:01As you can see, they're really bendy, and insect-like.

0:04:01 > 0:04:03They're actually quite creepy.

0:04:03 > 0:04:06We're not just using spanners, are we, Jo?

0:04:06 > 0:04:09No, because this is Deadly Art, we've got to use a blowtorch.

0:04:09 > 0:04:13And Jo's sections need to be joined together with intense heat.

0:04:13 > 0:04:16This is Deadly Art at its most extreme.

0:04:16 > 0:04:18Our artists are trained professionals.

0:04:18 > 0:04:20Don't attempt to do anything you see in our Big Art.

0:04:20 > 0:04:23The centipede is definitely coming together,

0:04:23 > 0:04:26so Michelle has plenty of time to show you a doodle.

0:04:26 > 0:04:32I'm going to show you how to draw this amazing Scutigera centipede.

0:04:32 > 0:04:36So, for the head, I'm going to draw a squashed circle shape.

0:04:39 > 0:04:44Then for the body, I'm going to draw a large sausage shape from the head.

0:04:44 > 0:04:48The centipede's body is divided into seven sections.

0:04:48 > 0:04:54So I'm going to draw lines going across the body to split it evenly.

0:04:54 > 0:04:57We have 15 pairs of legs on the Scutigera,

0:04:57 > 0:05:01So on one side, I'm going to draw 15 circles

0:05:01 > 0:05:04which we'll draw the legs from afterwards.

0:05:04 > 0:05:08Now, I need to draw the legs coming down from each one of these circles.

0:05:08 > 0:05:11A good tip is that when you get to the middle of the body,

0:05:11 > 0:05:13make the legs slightly longer.

0:05:17 > 0:05:20So, you've got your 15 pairs of legs on one side,

0:05:20 > 0:05:22now you need to repeat it on the other side.

0:05:22 > 0:05:24Another 15 legs.

0:05:27 > 0:05:31Once you've got all of your legs drawn in, focus on the face.

0:05:31 > 0:05:35I'm going to draw two large, black eyes.

0:05:35 > 0:05:39Then they have the long antennae coming off them.

0:05:39 > 0:05:42So I'm just going to do a nice wavy line.

0:05:42 > 0:05:46Now, I am going to finish off the centipede's face.

0:05:51 > 0:05:53Once you've got your basic shape,

0:05:53 > 0:05:57grab yourself a black pen and fill in the details,

0:05:57 > 0:06:00the black marker will really help to bring it to life.

0:06:00 > 0:06:04So you're just going over all those original pencil lines.

0:06:04 > 0:06:08You'll see the pencil marks really help as a guideline as you go around.

0:06:08 > 0:06:11You'll notice as I go around the body,

0:06:11 > 0:06:13I'm just doing curvier lines,

0:06:13 > 0:06:17just to help show the contours of the centipede's body.

0:06:17 > 0:06:22I'm going to colour in those big, black eyes.

0:06:22 > 0:06:24So now I'm going to focus on the legs.

0:06:24 > 0:06:28Draw over the pencil marks that you originally did,

0:06:28 > 0:06:32and then come back upon yourself so you make a double line.

0:06:32 > 0:06:35Of course, you have to do this 30 times.

0:06:35 > 0:06:38This requires dedication.

0:06:38 > 0:06:42And there you have your Deadly Scutigera centipede.

0:06:42 > 0:06:44That centipede looks great.

0:06:44 > 0:06:47Here's how some of you got on with this when we visited Port Talbot,

0:06:47 > 0:06:50in Wales, on a Deadly Day Out.

0:06:50 > 0:06:51ALL: Deadly Art!

0:06:51 > 0:06:54I enjoyed drawing the head because the eyes were fun to draw.

0:06:54 > 0:06:58I liked drawing fangs as I didn't think centipedes would have fangs.

0:06:58 > 0:07:00I enjoyed drawing the antennae

0:07:00 > 0:07:03because they were really long and easy to draw.

0:07:03 > 0:07:07I enjoyed drawing the body because it was like a sausage.

0:07:07 > 0:07:11That is full-on impressive. Remember to keep on doodling.

0:07:11 > 0:07:14Right, let's get back to the Deadly Art studio

0:07:14 > 0:07:16and our creepy centipede creation.

0:07:16 > 0:07:19All the legs have been bolted and soldered together,

0:07:19 > 0:07:22so now I'm just fixing them into this wooden support.

0:07:22 > 0:07:25That wooden structure forms the basis of our centipede's body,

0:07:25 > 0:07:29but we wanted to create those armoured segments.

0:07:29 > 0:07:31For that, we're using these rusty pieces of metal.

0:07:31 > 0:07:34Bending them into shape for the contours of his body.

0:07:34 > 0:07:36They didn't always look like this,

0:07:36 > 0:07:40they were nice and shiny, and I'll show you how we did it.

0:07:40 > 0:07:43So we took a normal piece of metal...

0:07:43 > 0:07:45covered it in vinegar.

0:07:45 > 0:07:47Vinegar?!

0:07:48 > 0:07:52- The whole lot covered in salt. - Salt? It's not a chip shop, Jo!

0:07:52 > 0:07:55After a while, it looks like that.

0:07:55 > 0:07:57That rusting effect works a treat,

0:07:57 > 0:08:00but don't try this at home, you'll get in big trouble.

0:08:00 > 0:08:05So it's time to see a bit more from my encounter with the Scutigera.

0:08:05 > 0:08:08And, over in Borneo, my team and I got a little too close

0:08:08 > 0:08:11to this giant venomous centipede for my liking.

0:08:11 > 0:08:14It sounds obvious, but one of the main challenges

0:08:14 > 0:08:17of living in a cave is the dark.

0:08:17 > 0:08:20The fact you can't actually see anything.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23This Scutigera manages to be an incredible hunter

0:08:23 > 0:08:26by using its long legs.

0:08:26 > 0:08:30You can see, as it moves, it'll just stop and tap some of those legs

0:08:30 > 0:08:32over the rock's surface.

0:08:34 > 0:08:38What it's doing is using each and every one of those feet

0:08:38 > 0:08:42to feel everything about the surface it's moving on.

0:08:42 > 0:08:46Building up a mental picture of its environment

0:08:46 > 0:08:49and if there's anything there that it might be able to eat.

0:08:49 > 0:08:51It makes my skin crawl!

0:08:51 > 0:08:54Now, over to Jo for a Deadly DIY.

0:08:54 > 0:08:58Here's how to make a Super Deadly Scutigera centipede.

0:08:58 > 0:09:03I've taken the doodle from earlier and put it onto some foam board.

0:09:03 > 0:09:08The next step is to take some clingfilm and cover it up.

0:09:10 > 0:09:11Pull it nice and tight,

0:09:11 > 0:09:14you don't want any wrinkles on the front of it.

0:09:14 > 0:09:19Turn it over, and if you fold it on top of each other, it just sticks.

0:09:19 > 0:09:21Now for the fun bit.

0:09:21 > 0:09:25I've got sand and PVA glue,

0:09:25 > 0:09:27and I'm going to mix them, 50-50.

0:09:27 > 0:09:29That's half and half.

0:09:29 > 0:09:31In with the PVA, first.

0:09:33 > 0:09:35And then scoop in some sand.

0:09:37 > 0:09:39Give it a really good mix.

0:09:39 > 0:09:43I love the messy DIYs.

0:09:44 > 0:09:47It takes a bit of mixing.

0:09:47 > 0:09:51OK, when it's all together, I'm taking a sandwich bag,

0:09:51 > 0:09:53and I'm going to scoop it all in.

0:09:58 > 0:10:03OK, then we're going to squidge it all down to the bottom.

0:10:05 > 0:10:07Squish it all down and then take some scissors

0:10:07 > 0:10:11to make a small nick near the corner.

0:10:11 > 0:10:14You can see the sand oozing out.

0:10:14 > 0:10:16This is just like icing the cake.

0:10:16 > 0:10:21I'm going to ice over every single line, every leg, and the whole body.

0:10:25 > 0:10:27Oh, yeah. Look at that.

0:10:29 > 0:10:30Amazing.

0:10:32 > 0:10:35So when the sand is done, take a polystyrene ball,

0:10:35 > 0:10:39cut it in half, and pop it where the eyes would go.

0:10:39 > 0:10:43Now, this takes about a day to dry, so you have to be patient,

0:10:43 > 0:10:46but I promise you, it's going to be worth it.

0:10:46 > 0:10:48We'll pop that over there, and take this,

0:10:48 > 0:10:51which has already had a chance to dry, nice and hard.

0:10:51 > 0:10:53I'll now give it some colour.

0:10:53 > 0:10:56I'm just going to take some water-based paints.

0:10:56 > 0:10:58I have got a brown, and some red.

0:10:58 > 0:11:00I can mix a nice browny-red.

0:11:00 > 0:11:04You can try lots of different colours and really make it your own.

0:11:04 > 0:11:07OK, let's start getting some colour on that body.

0:11:10 > 0:11:12Now, I'm going to go with some black,

0:11:12 > 0:11:15this will pick out the sections in the centipede's body.

0:11:15 > 0:11:18Going over each section,

0:11:18 > 0:11:21taking a lead from where his legs are.

0:11:23 > 0:11:25He's got markings going down his legs,

0:11:25 > 0:11:29so I'm just going to take my brush across the whole lot of them.

0:11:29 > 0:11:31It doesn't matter if it goes on the Clingfilm,

0:11:31 > 0:11:33because we'll chuck that away in a minute.

0:11:33 > 0:11:37Another marking further down his leg in black.

0:11:38 > 0:11:43I'm also going to do his eyes really dark black.

0:11:43 > 0:11:47Now, to give him a bit of yellow, to pick out the highlights on his body.

0:11:51 > 0:11:55Again, I can just sweep it across all of those legs at once.

0:11:58 > 0:12:01I love that noise it makes as it scrapes along those legs.

0:12:01 > 0:12:04That's the painting done, now we just have to peel it off.

0:12:04 > 0:12:07It does come away quite easily, but you have to be careful,

0:12:07 > 0:12:09you don't want to break any of those legs.

0:12:09 > 0:12:15I'm being really careful not to pull too hard on those legs.

0:12:17 > 0:12:22There we have it, let's put him with his little friend on a rock.

0:12:22 > 0:12:27Two Super Deadly sandy Scutigera centipedes.

0:12:27 > 0:12:29That's totally brilliant.

0:12:29 > 0:12:33Right, back to our huge metal Scutigera.

0:12:33 > 0:12:35It's all fitting together nicely.

0:12:35 > 0:12:37It looks like they've finished.

0:12:42 > 0:12:43The metal sheets really help

0:12:43 > 0:12:46to give our sculpture that insect-like armoured body.

0:12:46 > 0:12:50We've only used two materials, so simple but so effective.

0:12:50 > 0:12:53Well, if Steve is scared of a centipede this big,

0:12:53 > 0:12:55he's not going to like our giant one.

0:12:55 > 0:12:57I'm slightly nervous!

0:12:57 > 0:12:59So it's nearly time for the big reveal.

0:12:59 > 0:13:03I asked the Deadly Art team to recreate these killer shots

0:13:03 > 0:13:05and turn it into art.

0:13:05 > 0:13:08So, let's take a look at the finished result.

0:13:11 > 0:13:12That is genius!

0:13:12 > 0:13:15I love the different segments of the exoskeleton

0:13:15 > 0:13:19and the way the legs trawl out over the floor, it is so creepy.

0:13:19 > 0:13:24The rusting effect on the back of the centipede just looks perfect.

0:13:25 > 0:13:29Those wispy copper legs are so like the real thing.

0:13:29 > 0:13:33It just looks like this centipede is about to start crawling up the wall.

0:13:34 > 0:13:38Well done, team. Art doesn't get any deadlier than this.

0:13:38 > 0:13:41That was a truly sublime creation.

0:13:41 > 0:13:43Make sure you try the Doodle and the DIY.

0:13:43 > 0:13:46We'll see you next time for more Deadly Art.
