0:00:02 > 0:00:05My name's Steve Backshall, and this is Deadly Art.
0:00:07 > 0:00:11I'm lucky enough to travel the world, tracking deadly animals.
0:00:13 > 0:00:17But in this show, my team of artists take my killer moments...
0:00:19 > 0:00:22..and turn it into art.
0:00:22 > 0:00:25And we'll reveal another unique creation.
0:00:25 > 0:00:29Along the way, you'll get to pick up some tips, tricks, and techniques,
0:00:29 > 0:00:33so you can make some art yourself.
0:00:33 > 0:00:37This is no ordinary art show, this is Deadly Art.
0:00:41 > 0:00:44Coming up on Deadly Art, I'm on the search
0:00:44 > 0:00:48for one of the most famous deadly felines in the world.
0:00:48 > 0:00:54Lions are Africa's most impressive, most fearsome carnivore.
0:00:54 > 0:00:57My team of artists recreate another killer piece of art.
0:00:57 > 0:01:02- We got those finer details.- And you can make your own art at home, too.
0:01:06 > 0:01:10Today's deadly animal is possibly the fiercest feline on earth.
0:01:10 > 0:01:13It's impossible not to have the utmost admiration
0:01:13 > 0:01:16and respect for this legend of legends.
0:01:16 > 0:01:17The lion.
0:01:17 > 0:01:18LION ROARS
0:01:18 > 0:01:23Its super-loud roar can be heard up to eight kilometres away.
0:01:23 > 0:01:24That's like me shouting here
0:01:24 > 0:01:27and being heard 76 football pitches away.
0:01:27 > 0:01:30The males have that incredibly dramatic mane.
0:01:30 > 0:01:36They both have strong jaws and retractable super-sharp claws.
0:01:36 > 0:01:39And this is the only member of the cat family
0:01:39 > 0:01:43that works together as a group to take down its prey.
0:01:43 > 0:01:49Over to another team who work well together - it's my deadly artists.
0:01:49 > 0:01:53Hey, I'm Mike, I'm a cartoon artist and I'm up for today's Deadly Art.
0:01:54 > 0:01:57I'm Nicola, and I'm the power tool queen.
0:02:00 > 0:02:03Mike and Nicola will be representing the Deadly Art team,
0:02:03 > 0:02:06who are always up for a challenge.
0:02:08 > 0:02:11This is the killer moment for our artists to capture.
0:02:11 > 0:02:14While the lionesses do the majority of the hunting,
0:02:14 > 0:02:16the male protects his family.
0:02:16 > 0:02:21And when you see a male lion in full flow running at top speed,
0:02:21 > 0:02:23it's incredibly impressive.
0:02:23 > 0:02:27Look at that! So, Mike and Nicola, over to you.
0:02:27 > 0:02:30- We've got to get across the speed of the lion.- And the colours.
0:02:30 > 0:02:34Blue sky and yellow fur, and the face - so noble and majestic.
0:02:34 > 0:02:37- I love it.- Let's go!
0:02:38 > 0:02:41Time for some more Deadly Art.
0:02:41 > 0:02:45Nicola's got the pallet sorted, and Mike's starting on the canvas.
0:02:45 > 0:02:48When the Deadly 60 team and I visited Namibia,
0:02:48 > 0:02:51after hours of searching in the bush,
0:02:51 > 0:02:54we came across an incredible pride of lionesses.
0:02:58 > 0:02:59Look at that!
0:03:01 > 0:03:03Ooh, that's some purpose.
0:03:05 > 0:03:09Looks like they've spotted something.
0:03:09 > 0:03:12There's a couple of warthog off to our left,
0:03:12 > 0:03:16and...our lions have spotted them.
0:03:16 > 0:03:20This is the perfect time for things to start happening.
0:03:20 > 0:03:21The warthog are getting closer,
0:03:21 > 0:03:24they don't realise what they're doing.
0:03:24 > 0:03:27This one here is moving forward with purpose.
0:03:35 > 0:03:38It's going to happen right now.
0:03:38 > 0:03:42One down. Over the back there. No, it's got away! He got away!
0:03:48 > 0:03:51All the warthog scattered in different directions,
0:03:51 > 0:03:55and one over there, unfortunately,
0:03:55 > 0:03:58has just met its end in the thicket over there.
0:03:58 > 0:04:00The others all escaped.
0:04:03 > 0:04:07That would have to be one of the quickest,
0:04:07 > 0:04:10most completely perfect hunts I've ever seen.
0:04:10 > 0:04:15And that's why the lion has such an incredible reputation.
0:04:15 > 0:04:19So how are Mike and Nicola getting on in the Deadly Art studio?
0:04:19 > 0:04:21This is about movement,
0:04:21 > 0:04:25so I've thinned out the oil paints with turpentine,
0:04:25 > 0:04:28which will enable it to move loosely and freely across the canvas.
0:04:28 > 0:04:32- It's potent stuff so don't try it at home. Let's get pouring!- OK.
0:04:32 > 0:04:34Now this looks fun!
0:04:34 > 0:04:36Art should be messy,
0:04:36 > 0:04:39but don't try any of the techniques you see in our Big Art.
0:04:39 > 0:04:42Mike and Nicola have to tilt the canvas
0:04:42 > 0:04:47to get the paint to run in the right direction. Now it's your turn.
0:04:47 > 0:04:50Over to Mike for today's Deadly Doodle.
0:04:50 > 0:04:54I'll show you how to do this Deadly Doodle of a lion.
0:04:54 > 0:04:56As always, we start with simple shapes.
0:04:56 > 0:04:58Today's simple shape is the heart.
0:04:58 > 0:05:02We all love lions, so we're going to start with a heart
0:05:02 > 0:05:04in the middle of our paper for the nose.
0:05:04 > 0:05:07Draw an upside down heart for the mouth,
0:05:07 > 0:05:11and another heart on the top of that for the area around the eyes.
0:05:13 > 0:05:18You can draw a rectangle underneath that for the bottom of his mouth.
0:05:18 > 0:05:22Add in two C shapes for his ears.
0:05:22 > 0:05:28We're going to draw two curves on the side to mark out where his mane goes.
0:05:28 > 0:05:32Also add in two lines to mark out where the eyes go.
0:05:32 > 0:05:36OK. That's the pencil sketch done, let's add in some details.
0:05:36 > 0:05:38Let's start with the eyes.
0:05:38 > 0:05:43Go back over that line, and then start adding in your pupils,
0:05:43 > 0:05:47which are just three Cs getting smaller and smaller.
0:05:47 > 0:05:51We'll colour in this bit and do the same again on the other side.
0:05:53 > 0:05:54Let's add in the nose.
0:05:54 > 0:06:00When you go back over that heart, just add in some furry textures,
0:06:00 > 0:06:03wrapping it around to his mouth.
0:06:03 > 0:06:07Now work up to the nose. Go back over that heart.
0:06:07 > 0:06:10This time, we're going to add in some nostrils.
0:06:12 > 0:06:15Draw in that huge nose there.
0:06:15 > 0:06:18Then add in some whiskers there.
0:06:18 > 0:06:22Three lines here, three lines on the other side,
0:06:22 > 0:06:26then do big, long lines for those big whiskers.
0:06:27 > 0:06:30Now we're going to go back over the ears,
0:06:30 > 0:06:32add in a bit of fur this time.
0:06:33 > 0:06:35Now work on the bottom jaw.
0:06:35 > 0:06:39Go back over that, but this time give him a little bit of a furry chin.
0:06:41 > 0:06:46Draw in two little teeth at the bottom, two big teeth at the top.
0:06:50 > 0:06:53So for the mane, we're going to go back over our guidelines,
0:06:53 > 0:06:56but this time do a big curving line like this,
0:06:56 > 0:06:59kind of like a zigzag lightning bolt.
0:06:59 > 0:07:05All round the bottom. The same on the other side, a big lightning bolt.
0:07:05 > 0:07:10Give him a little puff of hair at the top. The last little touch...
0:07:10 > 0:07:16Make his eyes look really menacing by adding in a dark line. Like that.
0:07:17 > 0:07:21Right, there you have it! How's that for a deadly lion?
0:07:21 > 0:07:26That lion looks ferocious! We visited Devon on a Deadly Day Out,
0:07:26 > 0:07:29and here's how some of you got on with this doodle
0:07:29 > 0:07:31in the Deadly Art tent.
0:07:31 > 0:07:34CHEERING
0:07:34 > 0:07:36This is my Deadly Doodle. Rarrr!
0:07:36 > 0:07:39I love the eyes, they look cool.
0:07:39 > 0:07:42I'm Leanne and this is my Deadly Doodle.
0:07:42 > 0:07:45It's just basic shapes. It was explained well.
0:07:45 > 0:07:48My name's Erin and this is my Deadly Doodle.
0:07:48 > 0:07:52- BOTH:- This is our Deadly Doodle. Grrr!
0:07:52 > 0:07:54The teeth are the deadliest bit, I really enjoyed it.
0:07:54 > 0:07:59Seriously impressive! Remember to keep on doodling.
0:07:59 > 0:08:03Let's get back to the Deadly Art studio and our lion canvas.
0:08:03 > 0:08:05We've created energy in the painting
0:08:05 > 0:08:09by throwing paint over the canvas to get a feeling of movement.
0:08:09 > 0:08:13In the killer moment, the lion's mane is moving in the breeze.
0:08:13 > 0:08:17That's why my paint is dribbling in this direction.
0:08:17 > 0:08:21Wouldn't mind giving that a go myself!
0:08:21 > 0:08:25Now you can get involved. It's DIY time.
0:08:25 > 0:08:31I'll show you how to make this really cool lion backpack accessory.
0:08:31 > 0:08:33We'll start by making the pom-pom.
0:08:33 > 0:08:37We'll begin by drawing a leaf shape on a piece of card.
0:08:39 > 0:08:43A small circle in the centre. Then cut it out.
0:08:46 > 0:08:49To cut out the circle in the centre,
0:08:49 > 0:08:54make a slit from the top all the way in, and cut it out.
0:08:54 > 0:08:59When we put wool onto this template, to avoid it slipping up to the top,
0:08:59 > 0:09:03I'm going to add some little ridges in here to grip hold of.
0:09:03 > 0:09:05You'll need two of these,
0:09:05 > 0:09:08so use the first one as a template to make an exact replica.
0:09:08 > 0:09:11Piece them together, grab some wool.
0:09:11 > 0:09:13And just start wrapping it around.
0:09:13 > 0:09:18Keep on winding the wool around until you can't fit any more on.
0:09:18 > 0:09:20Take some scissors,
0:09:20 > 0:09:25and put your scissors in between two pieces of card like that.
0:09:27 > 0:09:30Then simply snip all the way around the edge.
0:09:30 > 0:09:32Just mind your fingers.
0:09:32 > 0:09:36As you cut, you'll see the wool pop away.
0:09:36 > 0:09:39It's starting to look like a lion's mane already.
0:09:39 > 0:09:43Before we remove the template, we're going to tie it off in the middle.
0:09:43 > 0:09:48Take a piece of wool and wrap it between the two pieces of card.
0:09:48 > 0:09:54When you reach the top, tie it up right to the centre, really tight.
0:09:54 > 0:09:58Now we're ready to remove the cardboard, very carefully.
0:09:58 > 0:10:05But look at this! Already, we can see our lion's mane coming to life.
0:10:05 > 0:10:08And now we're ready to make his face.
0:10:08 > 0:10:12We need a small piece of foam, and I've drawn some shapes on one side.
0:10:12 > 0:10:15These will make up his face and his ears.
0:10:15 > 0:10:20I'm going to start with this shape, which is an M shape.
0:10:20 > 0:10:24I've cut it out, and also this piece here,
0:10:24 > 0:10:29which is an angular square with a tab on the top.
0:10:29 > 0:10:32It's like an upside-down cupcake!
0:10:32 > 0:10:37These two pieces are going to form this section of his head.
0:10:37 > 0:10:43Dab some glue on the tab, and then stick that down onto the centre.
0:10:43 > 0:10:47Then we need another dollop of glue along here and here,
0:10:47 > 0:10:52then fold these under and wrap that around.
0:10:52 > 0:10:57You can already see this is starting to form this part of his face.
0:10:57 > 0:11:00And now we'll work on this part of the jaw.
0:11:00 > 0:11:04I've cut that out and added two slits.
0:11:04 > 0:11:08Put a dollop of glue on each corner,
0:11:08 > 0:11:11then wrap it under and stick it down.
0:11:11 > 0:11:14The top half of his face needs teeth,
0:11:14 > 0:11:16just to make him extra deadly.
0:11:16 > 0:11:20I've cut two small triangles of white foam
0:11:20 > 0:11:23and I'm just going to fix them under his lip.
0:11:23 > 0:11:26Now all he needs are some eyes.
0:11:26 > 0:11:31Take a small polystyrene ball, cut it in half, and colour it yellow.
0:11:31 > 0:11:35Then glue these to the top of his head.
0:11:35 > 0:11:38You see? Looking great already.
0:11:38 > 0:11:43And now you need some eyelids, which are two small semi-circles.
0:11:43 > 0:11:47You simply put on a bit of glue and stick them down,
0:11:47 > 0:11:51wrapping each one over the top of his eye.
0:11:51 > 0:11:56Now for the detail. Take a marker pen, and colour in his nose.
0:11:56 > 0:11:59I'm going to draw on an M shape and colour it in.
0:11:59 > 0:12:03And, of course, some pupils on those menacing eyes.
0:12:03 > 0:12:06Take your pom-pom, the lion's mane,
0:12:06 > 0:12:08and we're ready to start sticking his face in.
0:12:08 > 0:12:12So peel back some of the wool and put him into position.
0:12:12 > 0:12:15Then attach the lower jaw....
0:12:16 > 0:12:20..an ear either side, and then a keychain.
0:12:20 > 0:12:22And there he is!
0:12:22 > 0:12:26Doesn't he look awesome? I think mine needs a bit of a haircut.
0:12:26 > 0:12:28That'll look cool on your backpack.
0:12:28 > 0:12:32Right, back to our lion painting, and it's looking good.
0:12:32 > 0:12:36Now I'm adding a further level of detail to features on the face,
0:12:36 > 0:12:38starting with the nose.
0:12:40 > 0:12:44I'm working on those amazing large eyes.
0:12:49 > 0:12:52That's it, job done.
0:12:56 > 0:12:59After we worked into it, layer after layer,
0:12:59 > 0:13:01we really got those finer details.
0:13:01 > 0:13:05And now we have a beautiful, vibrant, dynamic painting.
0:13:05 > 0:13:08- A perfect portrait of the lion. - Yep, I love this guy.
0:13:08 > 0:13:13Earlier, I asked the Deadly Art team to recreate this killer moment,
0:13:13 > 0:13:14and turn it into art.
0:13:14 > 0:13:17So, let's take a look at the finished result.
0:13:18 > 0:13:24Wow! This would have to be one of my very favourite pieces of Deadly Art.
0:13:24 > 0:13:26The way the lion's mane is flowing in the wind,
0:13:26 > 0:13:30it really gives an impression of speed and power.
0:13:30 > 0:13:35You can almost sense this animal powering its way through grasses.
0:13:35 > 0:13:40The lion has such a grand, regal, majestic face. It is beautiful.
0:13:40 > 0:13:42That was a truly sublime work of art.
0:13:42 > 0:13:44Make sure you try the Doodle and the DIY,
0:13:44 > 0:13:48and we'll see you next time for more Deadly Art.
