0:00:06 > 0:00:09Welcome to my Deadly Top 10.

0:00:14 > 0:00:16A chance to choose the most extreme,

0:00:16 > 0:00:18mass-attacking, defending,

0:00:18 > 0:00:22airborne and super-sensing animals on the planet.

0:00:24 > 0:00:28All deadly in their own world, and, occasionally, deadly to me.

0:00:28 > 0:00:31Who do you think will be number 1 of the Deadly Top 10?

0:00:35 > 0:00:37Wish me luck, guys.

0:00:38 > 0:00:41'In this countdown, I'm choosing my top 10 mass attacks.

0:00:44 > 0:00:46'Ten animals that join forces to survive.

0:00:46 > 0:00:48'Colossal armies, tactical teams

0:00:48 > 0:00:51'and synchronised swarms of assassins...'

0:00:51 > 0:00:54Oh, you forget how much they hurt!

0:00:54 > 0:00:58'..who all rely on the power of numbers to succeed.

0:00:58 > 0:01:02'Where one alone might fail, the hoards will conquer.

0:01:03 > 0:01:06'But which is the best mass attack of all?

0:01:06 > 0:01:08'Time to kick off my top 10 countdown.

0:01:13 > 0:01:15'Smashing in at number 10 is

0:01:15 > 0:01:18'a snap-happy squadron of toothy torpedoes.

0:01:25 > 0:01:29'I'm in South Africa, heading out to find these really special sharks,

0:01:29 > 0:01:33'who are one of only a handful of species that hunt together in packs.

0:01:33 > 0:01:36'They're like the wolves of the sea.

0:01:36 > 0:01:39'Sharks can scent blood from over half a mile away,

0:01:39 > 0:01:42'and when it's time for tea, they rock up in a matter of minutes.'

0:01:44 > 0:01:46- Shark!- One. Two.

0:01:46 > 0:01:47Five. Six.

0:01:47 > 0:01:49I think on this side.

0:01:52 > 0:01:54This is fantastic!

0:01:54 > 0:01:58We've been here, we've baited the water for no more than three

0:01:58 > 0:02:03or four minutes, and already we are absolutely surrounded with sharks.

0:02:06 > 0:02:07Whoa!

0:02:07 > 0:02:10I'm not that sure I want to get in there, really.

0:02:13 > 0:02:16'With their killer sense of smell and full-throttle speed,

0:02:16 > 0:02:19'these guys are top-gun team players.

0:02:19 > 0:02:21'But they need to be.

0:02:21 > 0:02:24'Their prey is lightning-quick shoals of tight-turning fish.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26'Working together, they sniff out their victims

0:02:26 > 0:02:28'and corral them into a tight ball.

0:02:31 > 0:02:34'Now, the sharks corkscrew through the fishy feast,

0:02:34 > 0:02:37'snatching with razor-sharp teeth.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39'If a fish escapes one shark,

0:02:39 > 0:02:41'it rockets straight into the path of another.

0:02:43 > 0:02:47'Making mincemeat of entire shoals of fish, these blacktip sharks have

0:02:47 > 0:02:50'perfected the act of hunting and feeding en masse.

0:02:57 > 0:03:00'So, it's time to kit up and join the feast.'

0:03:02 > 0:03:04Amazing!

0:03:07 > 0:03:09Wow!

0:03:13 > 0:03:16'They are so manoeuvrable, snapping up fish

0:03:16 > 0:03:19'with real skill and precision.'

0:03:24 > 0:03:27Oh, dear, that was too close!

0:03:27 > 0:03:30I know they know what they're doing,

0:03:30 > 0:03:33but when they snatch in front of your face, it's really scary.

0:03:35 > 0:03:38'This really is a superbly coordinated attack,

0:03:38 > 0:03:41'and dinnertime has never looked more deadly.

0:03:44 > 0:03:47'So, what's next in this mass-attack fest?

0:03:47 > 0:03:50'How about a flock of dive-bombing dancers?

0:03:55 > 0:03:58'These comical seabirds are famous

0:03:58 > 0:04:02'for their disco-diva courtship dance.

0:04:02 > 0:04:05'And the Smurf boots also make excellent air brakes.

0:04:05 > 0:04:09'But don't be fooled by the blue-toed ballerina moves,

0:04:09 > 0:04:14'because when these guys get together, they launch a devastating mass attack.

0:04:17 > 0:04:20'Each morning, the high-flying boobies leave

0:04:20 > 0:04:23'their cliff-face colony and head out to sea.

0:04:24 > 0:04:28'They're searching for one thing - massive shoals of fish.

0:04:34 > 0:04:37'Piercing calls coordinate the boobies' assault.

0:04:40 > 0:04:44'Like a finely-tuned aerial display team, they begin their descent.

0:04:45 > 0:04:48'As the boobies dive, they draw back their wings to take aim,

0:04:48 > 0:04:52'and only fully retract seconds before they hit the water.

0:04:55 > 0:04:58'It's a superb synchronised assault, which confuses the fish

0:04:58 > 0:05:02'and ensures each booby has the best possible chance of catching a meal.

0:05:04 > 0:05:06'As they chase the shoal towards the shore,

0:05:06 > 0:05:09'they risk torturous surf and lethal undercurrents.

0:05:09 > 0:05:12'But they boobies are true professionals at this game

0:05:12 > 0:05:15'and can dive in waters just a metre deep.

0:05:20 > 0:05:25'A high-flying, wave-smashing attack from a band of boogying boobies.

0:05:28 > 0:05:30'Snuffling into slot number 8 is

0:05:30 > 0:05:32'a whole bunch of bushy-tailed gluttons.

0:05:39 > 0:05:44'In Costa Rica, my crew and I stumbled upon an entire platoon

0:05:44 > 0:05:47'of these marching, munching, furry foot soldiers.'

0:05:47 > 0:05:50They're generally quite bold, confident animals, so I think

0:05:50 > 0:05:53if we move with them, just kind of carefully,

0:05:53 > 0:05:56then hopefully, we shouldn't spook them too much.

0:06:04 > 0:06:07'Coatis are seriously resourceful,

0:06:07 > 0:06:10'guzzling anything from birds' eggs to beetles.'

0:06:12 > 0:06:16This big group here, probably about 30 animals,

0:06:16 > 0:06:19will all be made up of females and young males.

0:06:21 > 0:06:24I just love the way that they're always on the move,

0:06:24 > 0:06:26always out searching for something new to eat,

0:06:26 > 0:06:30testing things out, seeing if they're any good to eat.

0:06:32 > 0:06:35'By patrolling together, they form a living net.

0:06:35 > 0:06:37'Nothing escapes.

0:06:43 > 0:06:46'Experienced females position themselves around the edge,

0:06:46 > 0:06:49'where they can steer the group towards good hunting grounds.

0:06:51 > 0:06:54'But how do they keep their net in tight formation

0:06:54 > 0:06:57'in such dense vegetation?

0:06:57 > 0:07:00'Well, it's all to do with that bushy flagpole.'

0:07:01 > 0:07:04Notice as they're moving around, they've all got their tails

0:07:04 > 0:07:07held stiffly up in the air.

0:07:07 > 0:07:10That's a really good way for all of them to keep an eye out

0:07:10 > 0:07:13on where the rest of their fellows are.

0:07:13 > 0:07:17'Joining forces also gives the added advantage of safety,

0:07:17 > 0:07:21'and the first to spot danger will warn the entire group.'

0:07:24 > 0:07:26On the move again.

0:07:26 > 0:07:28Coming this way. Oh.

0:07:31 > 0:07:33One of my noisy camera crew just trod on a twig

0:07:33 > 0:07:35and they all scarpered.

0:07:38 > 0:07:41'Resourceful, sociable and vigilant,

0:07:41 > 0:07:44'these snuffling, snouted trailblazers

0:07:44 > 0:07:47'have the power of numbers nailed.

0:07:49 > 0:07:52'So, we've had a gang of snappy sharks,

0:07:52 > 0:07:55'a flock of dive-bombing boobies

0:07:55 > 0:07:57'and a snuffling squadron of coati.

0:07:57 > 0:08:02'Can you guess what's up next as we march en masse towards number 1?

0:08:02 > 0:08:04'It's a bone-crunching gang of girls.

0:08:07 > 0:08:10'Spotted hyenas live in close-knit clans,

0:08:10 > 0:08:13'and while this scrum may look like social chaos,

0:08:13 > 0:08:16'there's actually a strict hierarchy in place.

0:08:18 > 0:08:21'Females reign supreme. If you're a male, forget it!

0:08:21 > 0:08:23'You're at the bottom of the pile.'

0:08:26 > 0:08:28# I don't wanna be a boy

0:08:28 > 0:08:29# I wanna be a girl... #

0:08:29 > 0:08:32'These ladies can be formidable predators,

0:08:32 > 0:08:37'but they also know that stealing a meal is easier than catching one.

0:08:37 > 0:08:39'And it's their strength-in-numbers approach

0:08:39 > 0:08:41'that's vital for this to work.

0:08:41 > 0:08:44'The more of them there are, the cockier they get.

0:08:44 > 0:08:46'Using sheer intimidation,

0:08:46 > 0:08:50'this brutal mob can even push lions off a kill.

0:08:53 > 0:08:56'With their sledgehammer teeth and fiery, acidic stomachs,

0:08:56 > 0:09:00'hyenas are supremely engineered to tear hide and smash bone.

0:09:05 > 0:09:08'The thought of meeting this fearless rabble is really exciting,

0:09:08 > 0:09:10'and a tiny bit scary.'

0:09:12 > 0:09:14This is Yusuf.

0:09:14 > 0:09:16He's been feeding hyenas here for about 17 years,

0:09:16 > 0:09:19and his family for many generations before that.

0:09:19 > 0:09:20We're sat just outside his house,

0:09:20 > 0:09:24and the walls of the city are maybe 15, 20 metres behind me.

0:09:24 > 0:09:29When he wants to call the hyenas in, all he does is whistle.

0:09:29 > 0:09:31HE WHISTLES

0:09:37 > 0:09:42OK. We've got our first shape lumbering out of the darkness now.

0:09:42 > 0:09:43Graham, over there.

0:09:43 > 0:09:47'These girls love nothing more than to hang out together,

0:09:47 > 0:09:50'and tonight, the entire sisterhood has come to check us out.'

0:09:55 > 0:09:59I just can't get used to this at all.

0:09:59 > 0:10:02Can you imagine any other situation where you could come

0:10:02 > 0:10:07nose-to-nose with a predator this powerful and not get savaged?

0:10:07 > 0:10:10HYENA CRUNCHES

0:10:10 > 0:10:12Listen to that crunching!

0:10:15 > 0:10:18'So, just one hyena is a formidable force.

0:10:21 > 0:10:24'But the combined power of the clan is unstoppable.

0:10:24 > 0:10:29'This is real girl power, and a mass attack not to be messed with.

0:10:34 > 0:10:40'Thundering in at number 6 is a biblical plague of munching tyrants.

0:10:46 > 0:10:50'Locusts gather together in swarms and cause devastation.

0:10:50 > 0:10:53'Everyone's always wondered why they do this,

0:10:53 > 0:10:55'and the answer is a bit of a shocker.

0:10:57 > 0:11:01'Desert locusts actually spend much of their lives as harmless,

0:11:01 > 0:11:04'solitary creepy crawlies who actively avoid other locusts.

0:11:08 > 0:11:11'So, what makes this shy and retiring gentle green hopper

0:11:11 > 0:11:17'transform into a fiery red-and-yellow crowd-loving thug?

0:11:17 > 0:11:20'Scientists have discovered it's all in the power of touch.

0:11:22 > 0:11:25'By rubbing this green locust repeatedly on its leg,

0:11:25 > 0:11:28'after a few hours, the makeover is complete.

0:11:33 > 0:11:35'So, why does this happen?

0:11:35 > 0:11:38'Well, in the wild, when food runs short,

0:11:38 > 0:11:41'lonely locusts are slowly forced to gather together

0:11:41 > 0:11:43'in the search for food.

0:11:45 > 0:11:48'Jostling as they feed, messages are sent around the body,

0:11:48 > 0:11:51'and they transform into social monsters.

0:11:53 > 0:11:55'Now the swarm has assembled,

0:11:55 > 0:11:57'together they take to the air

0:11:57 > 0:12:00'in the search of fresh, luscious vegetation.

0:12:01 > 0:12:05'As they fly, swarms join up with other swarms to form

0:12:05 > 0:12:10'a gigantic plague of 50 billion individuals, 40 miles wide.

0:12:12 > 0:12:14'It's a chilling sight for farmers

0:12:14 > 0:12:17'in many of the world's poorest countries.

0:12:17 > 0:12:19'Fields are literally stripped bare.

0:12:19 > 0:12:23'This can cause famine and total devastation.

0:12:23 > 0:12:25'In a single day,

0:12:25 > 0:12:28'a swarm this size will consume four times as much food

0:12:28 > 0:12:31'as the people living in London.

0:12:33 > 0:12:35'So, despite being vegetarians,

0:12:35 > 0:12:38'locusts can cause the deaths of many people and animals.

0:12:43 > 0:12:46'A seriously deadly mass attack on a monstrous scale.

0:12:48 > 0:12:50'So, where are we?

0:12:50 > 0:12:53'It's time for a quick mass-attack recap.

0:12:53 > 0:12:57'We've had a terrifying team of sharks.

0:12:57 > 0:12:59'A diving mob of boobies.

0:12:59 > 0:13:02'A super squad of coatis.

0:13:02 > 0:13:03'A gang of giggling hyena.

0:13:03 > 0:13:06'And a crazy cloud of locusts.

0:13:06 > 0:13:10'Five slots gone, but five even mightier mass attacks to come.

0:13:10 > 0:13:12'And next, we have a decision to make.

0:13:12 > 0:13:17'Battling out for slot number 5 are two grizzly gangs of spiders.

0:13:21 > 0:13:25'But which team's tactics will secure a place in my Deadly Top 10?

0:13:27 > 0:13:30'First up are the South American social spiders.

0:13:31 > 0:13:34'Social by name and by nature,

0:13:34 > 0:13:37'these little spiders have taken team building to the next level.

0:13:37 > 0:13:40'It's taken tens of thousands of them to work together

0:13:40 > 0:13:43'and construct this gigantic palace made of silk.

0:13:43 > 0:13:47'They cooperate with one another, working together to repair

0:13:47 > 0:13:50'and extend their huge, sparkly trap.

0:13:50 > 0:13:52'At 20 metres tall,

0:13:52 > 0:13:56'it's a major obstacle in the airways of the forest.

0:14:01 > 0:14:03'Alone, a single tiny spider wouldn't have a hope.

0:14:03 > 0:14:07'But together, they can catch good-sized prey.

0:14:08 > 0:14:13'This cricket weighs several hundred times as much

0:14:13 > 0:14:14'as one of these teeny spiders.

0:14:14 > 0:14:17'The more it wriggles, the worse it gets.

0:14:17 > 0:14:21'Hundreds of these little, leggy, red jelly beans swarm over their quarry.

0:14:23 > 0:14:27'Now, they sink their jaws into its joints and inject their venom.

0:14:27 > 0:14:29'What a way to go!

0:14:32 > 0:14:35'Working together has paid off, and this horde of tiny victors

0:14:35 > 0:14:38'can share their super-sized meal.

0:14:40 > 0:14:42'Wow, that's just unbelievable!

0:14:42 > 0:14:44'But if you think that lot were impressive,

0:14:44 > 0:14:48'just wait till you meet our next contenders.

0:14:48 > 0:14:51'You can find these black lace-weaver spiders

0:14:51 > 0:14:53'in your own back garden.

0:14:53 > 0:14:57'And this one is mother to 100 tiny spinderlings.

0:14:58 > 0:15:02'But don't be fooled - these monster babies may be teeny,

0:15:02 > 0:15:06'but they have a massive plan of attack.

0:15:06 > 0:15:10'For now, they must bide their time, as their mother lays a special sack

0:15:10 > 0:15:15'of food eggs for them to eat, which is nutritious and full of energy.

0:15:16 > 0:15:19'As they grow, they shed their skins, and this first moult is

0:15:19 > 0:15:24'the signal for their devoted mother to begin her part in the team strategy.

0:15:27 > 0:15:30'By drumming on the web,

0:15:30 > 0:15:33'she arouses a killer instinct in her own offspring.'

0:15:39 > 0:15:44'They climb onto her - slowly at first, but soon, they're swarming.

0:15:44 > 0:15:46'She's flicked their predatory switch,

0:15:46 > 0:15:51'and now she will be their first prey.

0:15:51 > 0:15:56'Together, they overwhelm her, sucking fluid from her limbs.

0:15:58 > 0:16:01'By offering her own body as food,

0:16:01 > 0:16:06'this yummy mummy spider takes one for the team,

0:16:06 > 0:16:09'ensuring her brutal bunch of cannibal babies

0:16:09 > 0:16:11'survive to live another day.

0:16:15 > 0:16:19'So, which do you think should get a place in my top 10?

0:16:19 > 0:16:23'Titanic trap spinners or mini monster babies?

0:16:23 > 0:16:24'For me, even though

0:16:24 > 0:16:28'the black lace-weaver family was an awesome team,

0:16:28 > 0:16:32'it's the South American social spider's ability to work

0:16:32 > 0:16:34'closely with one another to build

0:16:34 > 0:16:39'their colossal fortress of fear that gets my Mass Attack vote...

0:16:40 > 0:16:43'..and so pips the post, but only just.

0:16:43 > 0:16:45'So, what can beat this lot?

0:16:45 > 0:16:49'How's about my number 4, a party pack of growling,

0:16:49 > 0:16:51'howling heroes, the grey wolf?'

0:16:54 > 0:16:58So, wolves are one of the hardest animals in the whole world

0:16:58 > 0:17:01to encounter in the wild, but I do have a trick up my sleeve.

0:17:01 > 0:17:04We're actually now in the Arctic Circle in Norway,

0:17:04 > 0:17:07and behind this fence is a group of wolves

0:17:07 > 0:17:08that's kind of used to people.

0:17:11 > 0:17:15I've also got Tess here, who's going to watch my back.

0:17:15 > 0:17:18- She's going to be my bodyguard, aren't you, Tess?- Hello.- Hi.

0:17:18 > 0:17:22- Are you ready?- Absolutely. I think so. Let's go on in.

0:17:27 > 0:17:30As they're approaching, they're kind of chatting to each other.

0:17:30 > 0:17:33WOLVES WHINE

0:17:37 > 0:17:39The fighting and the nipping and the scratching and the biting,

0:17:39 > 0:17:42it all has a real function of keeping the team together

0:17:42 > 0:17:45and keeping everyone in their right positions.

0:17:49 > 0:17:52As individuals, wolves are awesome predators,

0:17:52 > 0:17:57but it's when they come together as a pack that they are really deadly.

0:17:57 > 0:17:58The way they bring themselves together,

0:17:58 > 0:18:00particularly before a hunt, is using a howl.

0:18:00 > 0:18:06I'm going to try that now and see if we can get these guys to join in.

0:18:06 > 0:18:07- Shall we give it a go?- Give it a go.

0:18:07 > 0:18:14STEVE HOWLS

0:18:14 > 0:18:18WOLVES HOWL

0:18:18 > 0:18:20It's working.

0:18:22 > 0:18:27'This eerie call can be heard by other wolves up to six miles away.

0:18:27 > 0:18:29'It's the perfect way of keeping in touch with friends

0:18:29 > 0:18:32'and warning rival packs to stay away.

0:18:32 > 0:18:36'It's the wolf equivalent of sending a text.

0:18:36 > 0:18:40'Now that the troops are gathered and in position, the hunt can begin.

0:18:42 > 0:18:44'Only as a team can the pack have a hope of bringing down

0:18:44 > 0:18:47'one of these heavyweights.

0:18:47 > 0:18:50'Elk can weigh up to five times more than a wolf, and are well armed,

0:18:50 > 0:18:53'with sharp hooves.

0:18:54 > 0:18:58'The pack search the herd for weakness and injury,

0:18:58 > 0:19:00'old age or youth.

0:19:00 > 0:19:03'Now they're locked onto a target, they really mean business.

0:19:06 > 0:19:10'With incredible stamina, the pack can run for miles.

0:19:10 > 0:19:12'Together, they close in,

0:19:12 > 0:19:17'and seal the deal with coordinated powerful jaws and aggressive bites.

0:19:19 > 0:19:23'Strong, sociable and smart, it's a winning team combination.'

0:19:23 > 0:19:26The wolf.

0:19:26 > 0:19:30The voice of the wilderness and the ultimate team hunter.

0:19:34 > 0:19:36'We're really turning up the heat now.

0:19:36 > 0:19:40'My number 3 is a scorching swarm of assassins.

0:19:46 > 0:19:51'Japanese bees are hard working, buzzy bundles of flower-lovers,

0:19:51 > 0:19:53'collecting nectar and raising their babies.

0:19:55 > 0:20:00'But they share their neighbourhood with an arch enemy -

0:20:00 > 0:20:02'the giant hornet.

0:20:02 > 0:20:06'Enormous, voracious carnivores, hornets will attack hives,

0:20:06 > 0:20:09'steal honey and can butcher most bees for breakfast.

0:20:12 > 0:20:16'Japanese bees, however, have a trick up their stripy sleeves.

0:20:16 > 0:20:19'They know the only way to deal with this nasty neighbour is

0:20:19 > 0:20:22'to deploy a sizzling mass attack.

0:20:23 > 0:20:26'When the bees hear the hornet approaching their hive,

0:20:26 > 0:20:29'they fan an alarm pheromone through the air.

0:20:30 > 0:20:34'This alerts the whole hive to the hornet's presence.

0:20:34 > 0:20:38'If the hornet detects bee grubs, it will mark a spot with scent

0:20:38 > 0:20:40'and return later with reinforcements.

0:20:40 > 0:20:44'The bees can't afford to let this happen.

0:20:44 > 0:20:48'The scout advances, but the Japanese bees don't attack.

0:20:50 > 0:20:53'Instead, they lure the hornet inside.

0:20:55 > 0:20:58'Still, the bees hang fire.

0:20:58 > 0:21:01'Then, one is caught.

0:21:03 > 0:21:05'It's the signal the others have been waiting for.

0:21:07 > 0:21:10'Surrounded by vibrating bodies,

0:21:10 > 0:21:15'the giant hornet at the core of the bee ball begins to overheat.

0:21:17 > 0:21:20'With the aid of a thermal camera,

0:21:20 > 0:21:23'we can see what's happening inside the scrum.

0:21:24 > 0:21:27'Hundreds of buzzing bees are vibrating their muscles,

0:21:27 > 0:21:29'and the temperature is rocketing.

0:21:31 > 0:21:35'The centre begins to sizzle, and at 45 degrees centigrade,

0:21:35 > 0:21:38'the hornet is history.

0:21:38 > 0:21:41'These toasting, roasting bees can survive just a few degrees more.

0:21:41 > 0:21:46'It's a tiny, but crucial, advantage.

0:21:46 > 0:21:50'These are the only bees that can fight off hornets.

0:21:50 > 0:21:52'What a seriously sweltering mass-attack strategy.

0:21:56 > 0:22:00'Only two places left. Time to unleash the big guns.

0:22:00 > 0:22:01'Snatching second place,

0:22:01 > 0:22:06'it's a superstar squad of cunning mudslingers.'

0:22:10 > 0:22:13Literally, five minutes out of the dock, and already a whole bunch

0:22:13 > 0:22:16of bottlenose dolphins have popped up right alongside the boat.

0:22:16 > 0:22:18Look at this.

0:22:18 > 0:22:21There's about six or seven animals, and they are so close.

0:22:21 > 0:22:23These ones are right up at the bow.

0:22:23 > 0:22:26Their streamlined bodies and their powerful tails mean

0:22:26 > 0:22:28they're incredibly fast.

0:22:28 > 0:22:31They can easily outstrip a boat like this.

0:22:32 > 0:22:36And they can jump 16 feet out of the water.

0:22:36 > 0:22:40That's as high as our soundman's boom pole.

0:22:47 > 0:22:50'It's time to go overboard and get a closer look.

0:22:50 > 0:22:51'Since they're moving so fast,

0:22:51 > 0:22:55'we'll need our motorised sledges to have a hope of keeping up.

0:23:02 > 0:23:05'They love to play and have a bit of fun.

0:23:07 > 0:23:10'But they're also deadly predators, who combine their brain power

0:23:10 > 0:23:12'with their incredible agility to outmanoeuvre their victims.

0:23:21 > 0:23:25'This pod in Florida has come up with an astonishing killer tactic.

0:23:28 > 0:23:31'Like a race car round a track, the lead dolphin swims in a fast,

0:23:31 > 0:23:33'tight circle,

0:23:33 > 0:23:37'creating a ring of mushrooming mud around the shoal of fish.

0:23:39 > 0:23:42'The contracting loop traps the prey just like a net.

0:23:44 > 0:23:48'Panicked, fish rocket into the air in an attempt to escape.

0:23:50 > 0:23:53'The other dolphins assume their attack positions,

0:23:53 > 0:23:55'and their dinner jumps right into their open mouths.

0:23:57 > 0:24:00'Again and again, one dolphin creates a circle,

0:24:00 > 0:24:03'before they all line up, with perfect timing.

0:24:04 > 0:24:07'The most extraordinary thing is that they all take turns

0:24:07 > 0:24:09'to churn up the mud, so everyone gets a chance to feed

0:24:09 > 0:24:11'and have a bit of fun as well.

0:24:15 > 0:24:18'These dolphins are the only ones on the planet known to have

0:24:18 > 0:24:21'developed the mass-attack strategy, and it gives them the edge

0:24:21 > 0:24:24'in a very competitive world, making them a premier-league team

0:24:24 > 0:24:28'of anglers, and my marvellously muddy Mass Attack number 2.

0:24:34 > 0:24:38'So, if the smarty-pants dolphins aren't number 1, then who is?

0:24:38 > 0:24:41'Time for the Top 10 Mass Attack countdown.

0:24:41 > 0:24:44'Team-working 10, it's a blacktip shark bonanza.

0:24:44 > 0:24:47'Dive-bombing 9, these blue-footed boobies.

0:24:48 > 0:24:51'Netting number 8, it's the munching coatis.

0:24:52 > 0:24:57'Scary 7, a gang of spotted hyenas.

0:24:57 > 0:25:00'Swarming in at 6, a plague of desert locusts.

0:25:00 > 0:25:03'Fearsome 5, a mob of sociable spiders.

0:25:03 > 0:25:06'Paws at 4, the pack-hunting grey wolves.

0:25:07 > 0:25:11'Toasting, roasting 3, those Japanese honey bees.

0:25:11 > 0:25:14'Tactical 2, a pod of brainy bottlenose dolphins.

0:25:14 > 0:25:18'So, who's won this battle of the bands? Any ideas?

0:25:20 > 0:25:24'It's the army ant. My monstrously mass-attacking champion.

0:25:31 > 0:25:33'Together, they form one of the most-feared

0:25:33 > 0:25:36'and famous insect armies on the planet.

0:25:37 > 0:25:39'And, deep in the Brazilian jungle,

0:25:39 > 0:25:43'we find ourselves on the army ant frontline.'

0:25:43 > 0:25:45Oh, my goodness! That's amazing.

0:25:45 > 0:25:49We've got to get out of them, they will eat you alive.

0:25:49 > 0:25:51This busy trail in front of me is

0:25:51 > 0:25:54one of the genuine wonders of the rainforest.

0:25:54 > 0:25:58These are army ants, and absolutely nothing gets in their way.

0:25:58 > 0:26:02'But what I can see is only the tip of the iceberg.

0:26:02 > 0:26:04'The rest of the army is back at base.

0:26:06 > 0:26:10'This five-foot-tall bivouac is made entirely of ants.

0:26:10 > 0:26:14'Millions of legs with special hooks linked together to make paths,

0:26:14 > 0:26:16'bridges and even lifts.

0:26:19 > 0:26:23'It functions like one enormous living ant castle,

0:26:23 > 0:26:27'providing shelter for hundreds of thousands of ravenous larvae

0:26:27 > 0:26:29'who demand fresh meat, and lots of it.

0:26:30 > 0:26:32'So, each morning, a raiding party of soldiers,

0:26:32 > 0:26:38'armed with powerful jaws and a venomous sting, leave their fortress

0:26:38 > 0:26:42'and follow a scent trail laid by scouts who are foraging ahead.

0:26:49 > 0:26:52'The frontline stampedes through the forest at 12 metres per hour.

0:26:52 > 0:26:55'And they'll take anything they can overpower,

0:26:55 > 0:26:57'from the smallest insect up to lizards,

0:26:57 > 0:26:59'small mammals and even snakes.

0:27:00 > 0:27:03'Reinforcements constantly move to the front,

0:27:03 > 0:27:06'while victims' body parts are fed back to base.

0:27:08 > 0:27:11'The sting of a scorpion is useless against such aggressors.

0:27:11 > 0:27:13'They're too small, and there's just too many.

0:27:16 > 0:27:20'These busy ant motorways are crammed with traffic

0:27:20 > 0:27:22'from dawn till dusk.

0:27:22 > 0:27:24'Because the ants have such insatiable appetites,

0:27:24 > 0:27:29'the forest around their castle soon becomes an arid wasteland.

0:27:29 > 0:27:30'Now, they have to break camp

0:27:30 > 0:27:34'and march to a pristine part of the jungle to begin again.

0:27:38 > 0:27:42'A mighty, marching, forest-floor swallowing,

0:27:42 > 0:27:44'half a million super-strong organism,

0:27:44 > 0:27:47'with the ultimate, mammoth-sized mass attack.

0:27:49 > 0:27:51'That's Top 10 Mass Attacks done.

0:27:55 > 0:27:59'Don't forget to join me next time for more Deadly Top 10s.

0:28:00 > 0:28:04'And who's going to be the next Deadly number 1?
